Voice of an angel A night at the opera with soprano Eva Kong

This week... If you are yet to experience the spinetingling thrill of live opera, this could be your year to face the music, so to speak. Opera Queensland is shaking things up for 2019 with works by brilliant contemporary composers, as well as classic works, and plenty of powerhouse voices, including Metropolitan Opera star Rachelle Durkin, who will appear in Tosca this year, and Brisbane soprano Eva Kong (our cover star), who will headline next month’s A Flowering Tree. The latter is based on an Indian folk tale about a girl who magically transforms herself into a tree. It’s an ambitious program, led by OperaQ chief executive Patrick Nolan, who says opera is the ultimate expression of storytelling with music: “There is nothing like sitting in a concert hall, having a full orchestra playing, and feeling alive in the moment.” A moment not to be missed, wouldn’t you say? See you next week.

THE CHAT

Fighting fit Rising star Ellie Gonsalves hopes to wrestle more roles, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in her corner Fiona Purdon

T

o look at the glamorous Ellie Gonsalves, you’d never guess she is a diehard World Wide Wrestling fan. But she is, making her a natural fit for the role of Maddison – an ex-model aspiring to be a WWE diva – in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s latest film, Fighting With My Family. “My partner, Rob, and I love WWE, and we went to a lot of the shows and sat in the front row and we got to meet Dwayne. Making the movie was super cool, especially the first day of filming because I couldn’t believe I was making my first movie,” Ellie says. It’s all happening for the Brisbane-bred actor, model, fitness influencer, entrepreneur and wildlife warrior, who even appeared in a television ad during last year’s Super Bowl in the US. Oh, and did we mention she has 1.5 million followers on Instagram? “My life is beyond ridiculous, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’ve worked so hard to be where I am. I’m so grateful,’’ Ellie says. Fighting With My Family tracks the Cinderella-like rise of real-life WWE star Paige (aka Saraya Knight) from British rookie outsider to wrestling sensation. Maddison, played by Ellie, is Paige’s training partner. “It was great to have The Rock there (on set) because we all wanted our wrestling scenes to be authentic and for our roles to be authentic,”

Ellie says. “It’s such a heartwarming and super-funny movie.’’ After four years in Los Angeles, the 28-year-old has returned to live on acreage near her childhood stomping grounds of Rochedale and Burbank in Brisbane’s south. “I may have moved back to Brisbane but I’m on a plane constantly and living out of a suitcase,’’ says Ellie, who spent her childhood climbing trees, playing sport and riding horses. “I get to travel to so many amazing places all over the world. “I love living on the land and being close to wildlife, which helps me to have a break from all the craziness … there are wild rabbits and wallabies on our property. It gives me peace of mind.’’ Ellie has been an Australia Zoo ambassador for the past eight years and recently modelled for Khloe Kardashian’s Good American brand. But film is her focus. She acted in and co-produced the short film Zebra and is in talks for possible Hollywood action roles. It’s not surprising that she shone in both drama and sport while attending John Paul College at Daisy Hill, and she was even a 100m age school champion. “I had to stop sprinting because I had started modelling and wanted to focus on that, and I couldn’t have big legs,’’ she says.

Siren’s thrall Soprano Eva Kong prepares to serenade audiences as part of Opera Queensland’s dazzling 2019 season Fiona Purdon

pera Queensland is set to bloom like never before. The 2019 season’s first production, A Flowering Tree, by the brilliant contemporary American composer John Adams, marks the start of a new era at the performing arts body, led by artistic director and chief executive Patrick Nolan. Other highlights will include the classic Tosca (Jun 13-22), featuring Australian soprano and Metropolitan Opera star Rachelle Durkin, as well as Orpheus & Eurydice, to be directed by Circa’s Yaron Lifschitz (Oct 24-Nov 9). Patrick Nolan says bringing contemporary opera to Brisbane is high on the agenda. “We want to bring works to Brisbane audiences which they haven’t had the opportunity to experience before, as well as established works,” he says. “This is how the culture of opera grows.” Brisbane’s Eva Kong will star in A Flowering Tree, based on an Indian folk tale about a peasant girl, Kumudha (Kong), who has the ability to transform herself into a tree. When a prince, played by Adrian Dwyer, sees her, he falls in love. Patrick says in-demand Eva is fast becoming one of Australia’s leading sopranos. The singer – who owns Korean restaurant Funny Funny in Brisbane’s CBD with husband Brandon – is enthralled with the emotional journey of Kumudha, who ultimately becomes a princess. But of course the journey from peasant to princess doesn’t run smoothly. “(At one point) my jealous sister-in-law breaks all of the branches and my character cannot fully turn back into human form,’’ Eva says. “When I started preparing for the scene the other night, it was so emotional, it made me cry for hours. I couldn’t get to sleep until 4am because the scene is so touching and the melodies are so

beautiful. Not only the music, but the costumes and story will transport people to another place.’’ Eva is no stranger to John Adams’ music, having received a Green Room Award and a Helpmann Award nomination for her supporting role in Victorian Opera’s 2013 production of Adams’ Nixon in China. Incredibly, she performed the difficult role of Madame Mao just two weeks after giving birth to her second child, Ethan, now 6. Eva, who also has Seraphina, 9, also performed the role for Opera Australia but is grateful to now be an Opera Queensland

We want audiences to have a seductive, exhilarating, unexpected experience when they see opera live

regular. “I’m very impressed with the professionalism of Opera Queensland all the way through, including the language coaches and the wardrobe department,’’ she says. Patrick and Opera Queensland executive director Sandra Willis were determined to bring three mainstage productions to Brisbane this year, especially after pulling off the “major coup’’ of securing Rachelle Durkin for Tosca. Patrick will direct the production of the opera by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). “Tosca is a thriller. It’s about a famous singer who the chief of police threatens to rape, or otherwise he vows to murder her boyfriend. Instead, she murders him. It is a very pertinent story for our time because it’s about female empowerment,” he says. “Rachelle is big-time, she sings at the Met and Covent Garden and is based in New York. She has an exquisite voice. “You need to be (of) a certain age and experience to sing Tosca. She has been offered the role before but hasn’t been ready for it, but now she is, so it will be an amazing experience for Brisbane audiences.’’ Patrick is also looking forward to Yaron Lifschitz’s version of Orpheus & Eurydice, by German composer Gluck (1714-1787), especially given Yaron’s international reputation and his direction of more than 60 productions with Brisbane-based Circa. “Circa is one of Brisbane’s jewels, so this will be a wonderful collaboration,’’ Patrick says. “There is a lot of dance music in Orpheus so Yaron can insert some of his world-renowned choreography.’’ In another coup, Orpheus & Eurydice will also star celebrated Queensland soprano Natalie Christie Peluso. Patrick, who grew up in Sydney, went to NIDA with friends Yaron and dual Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. “Initially I thought I wanted to be an actor, but then I realised I was much better at directing, so I did a directors’ course at NIDA,’’ he says. The OperaQ team is keen to build on last year’s strong season, which included the best-selling Merry Widow, and “the publicity stunt of 200 naked women’’ in Don Giovanni. Sandra Willis confirms opera audiences are growing, with an impressive 35,000 tickets sold for performances last year, up on 2017 figures. “It’s about finding ways to connect with audiences,” she says. “Opera has the ability to touch you at a deep level. It’s about a bold retelling of music and stories. We want audiences to have a seductive, exhilarating and unexpected experience when they see opera live.’’ For Patrick, “opera is the ultimate expression of storytelling with music’’. “There is nothing like sitting in a concert hall, having a full orchestra playing, and feeling alive in the moment,’’ he says. Strange allure Steve Baker’s web series about a desperado’s search for love has been a surprise hit Fiona Purdon

Steve Baker, 42 filmmaker

richer, and hopefully harmonious place to live in.

What’s new with you? I’ve been a filmmaker for many years now, working on all kinds of projects, but recently I made my first web series, called This Is Desmondo Ray! It uses a mixture of animation and live action to tell the story of a peculiar man searching for love in a dark and troubling world. The series was recently crowned World Champion by the Web Series World Cup circuit for being the most awarded series in the world.

What was your ‘aha’ moment? Probably my first experience with Tropfest. I’ve been lucky to have had a great history with the festival, winning it in 2007, but the first time I was a finalist was way back in 2001 with a simple stick-figure film I animated in just four days. It was the first time I had ever entered a film festival and it just happened to be the largest short film festival in the world. So to screen my little comedy to that immense crowd and to hear them laughing themselves silly all the way through was such an addictive buzz. From that moment on, I knew what I wanted to do.

What do you love most about your job? I get to invent entire universes out of nothing except my imagination, and I can fill them with whoever or whatever I want to tell a story that hopefully moves an audience.

How did that come about? Back in 2013 I made a threeminute short film called The Video Dating Tape of Desmondo Ray, which I premiered online instead of the usual festival circuit. It was Staff Picked by Vimeo a day after it was uploaded and just sort of took off on a life of its own across the internet. So due to the popularity of that short, I really wanted to expand Desmondo’s universe, and it made sense that we’d

Who or what inspires you? Mostly it’s just people showing ingenuity. Whether they’re an artist, an inventor, a scientist, a chef, or whatever. I love seeing different kinds of people creatively think of ways to make this world a more interesting,

Where are you happiest? I’m a self-confessed hermit, which usually means I’m at my happiest at home on the couch with my wife, Mim, and our fur-child, Dash, a toy poodle, watching a silly movie and sipping tea. What’s best about Brisbane? The space. I can live in a house with a big backyard and it’s only a 15-minute drive to the city. What’s next for you? I’m currently developing my first TV series for streaming service Stan. If all goes well, I might be shooting later this year. thisisdesmondoray.com

LIFE

Alicia Pyke This culinary organisation makes me feel Nigella Lawson-esque while queuing to use the campus microwaves Have I mentioned I’m living on my own at the moment? With Guy working overseas for a few months, it’s just me and the cat, CJ. She’s excellent company, and I’ve lived alone before, but that was nearly two decades ago, when I was more likely to be out working or socialising than at home. Now that I’m doing the mature-age student thing and working from home, spending lots of time in on my own is the new norm. Living alone isn’t unusual of course. The last census found almost a quarter of us do it, and that number is growing.

At a time when the possibility of having a federal minister for loneliness gets raised every few months (the UK has one after all), living alone often gets a very bad rap. But for many of us, it can be a highly enjoyable way to live. Even if it’s only for a few months, like me. It does, however, require some major adjustments, particularly in the kitchen. Here’s what I’m learning. Cooking for one just isn’t fun. Guy is a very enthusiastic supporter of my cooking (plus, he cleans the kitchen) and I miss his compliments. These are often sweetly

reminiscent of the dad in The Castle’s famous, “What do you call this, love? Rissoles?” routine, which makes us both crack up. Everything tastes better served with a side of laughter. Always buy yummy things in jars. Ravenous? Haven’t been to the shops for days? Need to put something on a plate and eat right now? Open a few jars of preserved veges – olives, pickled cucumbers, artichoke hearts, sauerkraut – check if there’s a ripe tomato or avocado in the fruit bowl, drizzle it all with olive oil and add cheese. Instant hunger-busting smugness is mine.

Firing up the barbecue to sear a steak is not only deliciously acceptable, it keeps the kitchen splashback grease-free and reduces the washing up. Permission to grill granted! The freezer is my friend. When I do cook, I upsize it for leftovers. Not just enough for tomorrow’s dinner, but to freeze for a couple of uni lunches too. This culinary organisation makes me feel Nigella Lawson-esque while queuing to use the campus microwaves (weirdly clean, in case you’re curious). Step aside, junior, my roast pork belly with caramelised fennel and cauliflower rice needs reheating.

FOOD + DRINK

Take a bao With a small but delicious menu, this mod-Asian gem holds its own against seasoned competitors RESTAURANT Tony Harper Sometimes you strike gold in the most unlikely places. Nom Nom Bao doesn’t look like much – a small Asian canteen with half a dozen tables, a blackboard menu, an upright fridge hiding a few drinks, and a tiny kitchen behind a partition at the back. If there’s airconditioning, it needs a service. And let’s not mince words – it has been hellishly hot and I sweat like a fountain. I create my own Nom Nom puddle. There’s nothing lavish about the place, and it lives right next door to Little Valley and some of the best mod-Asian food in town. But I’m going back there because its menu, although small, is delicious. It’s also fast, inexpensive, and some terrific beers are lurking in that fridge. There are a few beers listed on the menu, Green Beacon brews (yum) holding pride of place. But there’s no Windjammer (my goto), so I pout like a four-year-old and stare at the fridge. I see some Balter – great – and then I’m told that Green Beacon’s latest small batch, Red’s Dead, is on tap. With plenty of Red’s Dead in my belly, my pout dissolves. What a great beer it is. The food centres around 10 different bao ($13 for two pieces, pictured), and there’s some imagination in the mix – softshell crab; seared salmon; tempura prawn; mushroom; tofu; and ice cream (eww). They are excellent bao, with bits of salad that have purpose, not just as filler, the right amount of sauce, and cracking bits of protein. This is crowd-pleasing Asian. We try all but maybe one or two – the crab is perhaps top of the list, with tofu, pork belly and prawn nipping at its heels. But there is life beyond bao, and some of it is remarkably good. Like a Penang red

curry ($17) that would shame half of the Thai restaurants in town, packing enough spice to add to my puddle. And karaage chicken ($11) that is simply tasty, as karaage should be. There’s a poke bowl and some other bits and bobs. The only let-down is kimchi fries ($9), for which I’ll take the blame, based on unrealistic expectations. In my head was the sort of thing Ryan Squires conjures –

kimchi kind of dehydrated, dusted in rice flour, and deep fried. Kimchi chips! But the reality is so much more mundane – French fries (yep, potato out of the freezer) with kimchi stacked on top. Exactly as you’d expect it if you weren’t an idiot. Kimchi on chips. It’s a casual place, so table service is minimal – order and pay at the counter then wait a moment for things to arrive.

But the staff don’t hold to the formula; we get plenty of table service and it is as delightful as it is relaxed. Nom Nom hovers between a street-food vendor and something more permanent and way more savvy. I love the fact I can get delicious Asian food with a glass of something decent and contemporary (hasn’t that taken an age to happen?). I love the Red’s Dead. I love the curry.

RECIPE

Gold class This curious combo is ideal for tapas with aperitifs, says Alastair McLeod Let me start the sell job on this assembly of apparently disparate ingredients. The lardo, Tuscan in origin, is pork back fat cured with salt, herbs and spices. You can fry it like pancetta or shave it into gossamer slices. Its savoury, butteriness feels like silk on the tongue. So why use it here? The mango jam on toast is a worthy fast breaker, but the addition of lardo creates a sweet/salty/savoury union that gives it a tapas/antipasto vibe that’s perfect with a fino or negroni. Drape over oven-roasted tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms with a squeeze of lemon, or grilled asparagus and slices of Moreton Bay bug. Are you sold?

LARDO ON TOAST WITH MANGO JAM INGREDIENTS 1 large Bowen mango, 600g 125ml water 220g caster sugar Small pinch of saffron 4 thick slices sourdough

Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 2 cloves garlic, peeled 12 thin slices lardo Few sprigs of thyme

METHOD Put the mango in a steamer basket set over a pot of simmering water. Steam for 10 mins or until soft to the touch. Remove and cool. Meanwhile, pour water into a small saucepan, followed by the sugar. Set over a medium heat until the sugar dissolves then raise the heat and cook until a thermometer reads 135C. Add the mango and saffron and boil for 6 mins until mixture has thickened, then cool completely. When ready to serve, drizzle bread liberally with olive oil and season generously. Toast in a preheated grill pan until well toasted and crispy on both sides. Rub the slices with garlic cloves, and spread thickly with the mango jam. Drape with lardo slices, finish with a little more seasoning and scatter with thyme. Soak up the history WINE Mike Frost What’s in a name? For wine enthusiast turned producer Trevor Harch, it’s a whole lot of love – he named his Barossa vineyard, Brockenchack for his four grandchildren – Bronte, Mackenzie, Charli and Jack. A one-time Sunshine Coast farmer and construction supervisor, Trevor, with his wife Marilyn, bought the 16ha singlevineyard estate in South Australia’s Keyneton in 2007 before relocating there in 2013. Brockenchack was planted to riesling V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

in 1896 and shiraz in 1927, and since then chardonnay, pinot gris, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir have been added to the vineyard. Trevor believes the riesling

plantings are some of the oldest in Australia, and the wine that comes off them, the 2018 Mackenzie William riesling, is pretty good proof that they provide topquality fruit, with its lime, floral and mineral characters. It’s well priced, too, at only $20 a bottle from the winery. The winery’s two other whites – the 2018 On Point Pinot Grigio and 2016 Charli Jay Chardonnay – are sold out at the winery, though there may be some in retail outlets. In the meantime, console yourself with 2018 Tru-Su Rosé ($17, 100 per cent shiraz), Great Scott NV Sparkling Shiraz ($20),

2016 Zip Line Shiraz ($22), 2016 Miss Bronte Cabernet Sauvignon ($28), 2017 Megan Jan Grenache ($35), 2017 Hare Hunter pinot noir ($35), or 2013 Jack Harrison Shiraz ($58). The Brockenchack cellar door is a story in itself, having been the property’s butcher shop and a brothel during its long life. If you are looking for the wines locally, try the Cellarbrations stores at Wilston, Milton, Ashgrove and Camp Hill, Black Sheep bottle shops, Urban Cellars outlets, or go to the source at brockenchack.com.au. frostonvine@yahoo.com.au BRISBANE NEWS March 20-26, 2019 11

ARTS

LOSS OF LIFE ... Marian Drew’s Watermelon and Quince in Balance; New Art Cave; Pelican on paper and linen.

Death becomes them A rare local exhibition of artist Marian Drew’s photographs pays tribute to the beauty of the natural world – dead or alive Phil Brown It was a pelican in repose that first caught my eye. Perhaps I should clarify – it was actually dead. The creatures in Marian Drew’s gorgeously composed photos have mostly passed on, often in unnatural circumstances, many killed on the road. Not sure what happened to the pelican in Pelican on paper and linen, but in death the bird’s nobility is intact and the work becomes a memento mori piece, a meditation on life and death and our relationship with the natural world. There is an obvious reference to the European still-life tradition. A number of such works feature in a 12 BRISBANE NEWS March 20-26, 2019

survey exhibition of this major Queensland artist’s work, now showing at Andrew Baker Art Dealer. Marian, an adjunct associate professor at the Queensland College of Art (where she taught for decades), is an internationally recognised artist who has held more than 40 solo and numerous group shows in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Germany, France, China, Dubai, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Switzerland, the UK, Mexico and Peru. Her work is held in collections here and abroad, but she hasn’t been showing in Brisbane in recent years. Art dealer Andrew Baker wanted to

change that and reacquaint us with the work of this Queenslander. Born and bred in Bundaberg and its surrounding cane fields, Marian has always had a love of the great outdoors, and the natural world in all its facets is on show in the works of this exhibition, covering the years 1983 to 2018. Exploring the landscape in Queensland and elsewhere has always been central to the artist’s oeuvre. Her recent works of caves in Arnhem Land are quite magical, and Marian has tinted her photos to highlight the geological features. In an accompanying essay, she writes that her depictions of rocks and caves “are meditations on deep time”. “The rocks in Devonian Flesh (her latest series) are literally the flesh of oceanic life, heated, compressed and transformed into

hard stuff.” A lovely way of describing the geology for a general audience. Her singular rocks remind one of those Japanese Zen gardens, where the rocks are surrounded by raked gravel, and Marian does acknowledge an oriental influence. You may recognise some of her earlier works from the opening art exhibition at the Brisbane Powerhouse, images that are now iconic. In her list of firsts was also an appearance at the inaugural APT in 1993. Her art practice is layered, resulting in photographic prints of exquisite beauty, even when the central image may be a dead creature. GOING OUT

Baroque beauty From violin to viola, Monique O’Dea’s second fiddle of choice ended up becoming her greatest love Fiona Purdon Violist Monique O’Dea could not imagine life without her beloved Brandenburg Quartet. “There is the saying ‘running away to join the circus’, well I could practically leave my family to be in the quartet, I love it so much,” Monique jokes of her affection for the offshoot of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. “Playing in the quartet can be electrifying. The music is challenging, intense and satisfying – there is such a freedom of expression. We are all different ages and situations but when we are together as a group, we are in tune with each other.’’ Sydney-based Monique, 56, is an original member of the orchestra, which formed in 1989, and a founding member of the quartet, which came together by accident three years ago during a meeting of the orchestra principals. There was an impromptu jam session with lead violins Shaun Lee-Chen and Ben Dollman, lead cello Jamie Hey, and Monique, lead viola. “We worked fast through what we had to do and then we just played music for hours and realised how fun it was,’’ she says. “Management were delighted that we wanted to form a quartet and tour. We are a tight unit. It’s a really different thing to a big orchestra.’’ Next month the quartet will delight Brisbane audiences with baroque classics such as Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Minor, plus lesser-known music, such as

V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

that by 18th century French composer Hyacinthe Jadin, whose romantic music is a quartet favourite. “Jadin died so tragically young, but he wrote so many beautiful string quartets,’’ Monique says. “The Brisbane concert is in the Old Museum, which (is) the ideal romantic setting for an intimate quartet concert.’’ Monique will use her 1849 Pierre Silvestre viola. “We play on period instruments and use baroque-style bows, which creates a mellow and softer sound,’’ she says. Monique’s life is centred on music. She and violinist husband Michael O’Dea teach music at a Sydney school. Daughter Madeleine, 22, is studying opera at the Sydney Conservatorium, while son Christopher, 19, is a jazz sax player. “My husband and I met as students in Vienna, our lives have always revolved around music,’’ she says. Originally from Adelaide, Monique started playing the violin when she was eight years old. She transferred to viola during a chamber music weekend in Vienna when she was in her early 20s. “I grew up playing the violin but feeling I would be a good viola player. Then this one weekend, a viola player was needed and no one else wanted to play except me. Ever since then I’ve been playing the viola, and I’ve never looked back,’’ she says. FILM

THE LEGO MOVIE 2 (PG) hhhjj Director: Mike Mitchell Starring: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett The first Lego Movie clicked – with critics and audiences alike. Two spin-off films later, however, some of the interlocking bricks are showing obvious signs of wear and tear. In The Lego Movie 2, which follows directly on from events in the original film, Bricksburg is invaded by giant Duplo aliens. Dumb, clumsy and prone to destruction, the intergalactic invaders shatter Emmet’s (Pratt) peace offering – a large, pink heart – almost without pause. The ensuing battle between two worlds lays to waste a oncethriving metropolis. Five years later, Emmet inhabits a bleak, post-apocalyptic landscape with Lucy/

Wyldstyle (Banks), Batman (Arnett), and what’s left of their former gang (Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are MIA). The survivors keep a low profile, shunning anything that’s new or shiny enough to catch the attention of their marauding enemies. But Emmet’s desire to rebuild gets the better of him. When the good-natured antianti-hero shows Lucy his dream home, all hell breaks loose in the form of a badass intergalactic mini doll named General Sweet Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz), commander of the Systar System Army. Under the orders of formidable shapeshifting villainess Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish), Mayhem kidnaps Emmet’s friends, transporting them to another galaxy, where they are brainwashed by fiendishly catchy pop tunes.

Emmet converts his house into a spaceship and follows. His mid-air collision with an asteroid is averted at the 11th hour with the help of a rugged adventurer, Rex Dangervest (a fun spoof on Pratt’s action-man persona in films such as Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy). Under the tutelage of this stubble-jawed

SWIMMING WITH MEN (M) hhhjj Director: Oliver Parker Starring: Rob Brydon, Rupert Graves, Charlotte Riley Forget fast cars and trophy girlfriends, Rob Brydon’s po-faced accountant (right) confronts his midlife crisis with goggles and a nose clip. Bored with his job, worn down by the grey crush of his daily commute, threatened by his wife’s new-found passion for public office, Eric Scott (Brydon) escapes to the local swimming pool. During one of his solitary lap sessions, the dispirited numbers whiz encounters a motley bunch of widowers, divorcees, anxiety sufferers and petty thieves who have formed their own synchronised swimming team. The aim, literally and figuratively, is to keep each other afloat. When Scott is persuaded to join the team, ostensibly to even up the numbers, a difficult, mandalalike turning formation is finally resolved. 14 BRISBANE NEWS March 20-26, 2019

And something inside the tightly wound outsider also slides into place. The men’s competitive spirit is awakened by a strapping Swede, who smugly announces his team’s intended domination of the upcoming, unofficial world competition in Madrid. They rashly

decide to enter, with their unofficial cheerleader (Riley) as coach. And so unfolds an under-dog story in the tradition of Strictly Ballroom and Cool Runnings, with more than a passing nod to The Full Monty. There are a few clunky gear changes in

space cowboy, Emmet “mans up” in a bid to save the day. The resulting showdown causes such a cataclysmic tear in the universe, the reverberations are felt all the way upstairs in the real world, where Lego overlords Finn (Jadon Sand) and sister Bianca (Brooklynn Prince) dwell. Peppered liberally with pop-culture references, this sweet, breezy sequel offers moviegoers and their chaperones a few good chuckles, And the screenplay by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed the original 2014 hit, makes some keen observations about the different ways in which girls and boys play. But in the end, director Mike Mitchell (Trolls) would appear to be missing a few key pieces. He’s clearly playing with a hand-me-down set.

Oliver Parker’s film, which was inspired by the 2010 Swedish documentary Men Who Swim, and some of the humour falls flat. But there’s something very solid about Swimming With Men’s portrayal of male friendship. Many of the characters’ backstories are referenced elliptically; we glean snippets rather than whole narratives, and this works well in terms of the context. Rupert Graves’ character, Luke, has trodden the most conventional path to selfdestruction, having left his wife for a younger woman. Eric’s problems stem more from what he hasn’t done. While the team’s transformation into something vaguely resembling competition preparedness is standard genre material, their triumphant pool sequence is well conceived. Based on the story of a group of Swedish men who formed their own synchronised swimming team as a protest against the meaning of life, Swimming With Men is a celebration of silliness. Bags of style What I love about these bags is that they are so millennial but can also be worn by an 80-year-old

Having dressed the offspring of A-listers such as Cate Blanchett, this local designer is turning her talents to luxe accessories Hannah Davies

f you thought you knew all there was to know about handbags, Elizabeth O’Connor-Cowley can tell you more. And given that accessories represent an exciting new chapter in her design journey, the 47-year-old artist and fashion creative is keen to share her passion with the world. Previously the powerhouse behind children’s clothing brand eeni meeni miini moh – a Brisbane label that enjoyed 17 years of success and was regularly seen on the children of celebrities including Cate Blanchett, Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman – Elizabeth shut up shop two years ago (to the dismay of parents everywhere) and is now embarking on a new dream – designing her own accessories. The launch collection of Article sees the arrival of “artsy luxe” leather handbags that blur the line between art and fashion while morphing form and function with meticulous craftsmanship. Elizabeth, who lives at Ashgrove, in Brisbane’s northwest, with husband Philip and sons Emrys, 17, and Anselm, 14, says she’s confident Article will take off internationally as well as being a hit with Australians. “I have always admired classic French and Italian luxury brands, particularly Louis Vuitton, and I also have a huge appetite for accessories. Being able to morph these two loves with my passion for art has been incredible,” she says. “Creating a new handbag brand, and one that doesn’t compromise quality workmanship or artistic integrity, has been challenging, however the commitment has been well worth it. “The bags look as good on the inside as they do on the outside, and even our smallest bags, the pochettes, allow you to fit your phone, glasses, keys, lippy and credit cards easily, without them looking like a python who’s just swallowed a porcupine.” Currently operating Article from a pop-up shop at The Calile Hotel in James St, Fortitude Valley, Elizabeth, who has a bachelor of visual arts from Queensland University of Technology, also has an online store at articleproduct.com. The collection, which comes in a palette of indigo, oyster, noir, silver, prussian (blue), gris (grey) and ballet (pink), features styles including the tote, grande bucket, hobo, top handle, and messenger, as well as clutch bags that carry Elizabeth’s signature artworks. In a handy twist, the wearer can turn their clutch into a shoulder bag or cross-body bag by adding interchangeable straps. Fluffy charms complete the bespoke look. “What I love about these bags is that they are so millennial but can also be worn by an 80-year-old woman,” she says. “Like Carla Zampatti once said, I think it’s about creating something for the grandmother, the granddaughter, and the mother in between.” Elizabeth hasn’t forgotten the men in all this and has also designed a range of manbags and wallets. “My sons were road testers of eeni meeni miini moh when they were growing up and it’s lovely to see they’re now enjoying my Article collection,” she says. articleproduct.com

Hidden talents Revel in some me-time at this upstyled bolthole in the boho heart of Byron Bay Chantay Logan Byron Bay is setting the scene for a new kind of B&B. This loft-style love nest, curated by hairdressing wunderkind Jaye Edwards, is seducing the style set with chic bed-and-beauty getaways. That the converted warehouse happens to be one of the most Instagrammable backdrops imaginable adds to its appeal. While colour-splashed murals from artist Brian Connolly clamour for attention with the cactus garden, it’s the detail that sets Cacti Mi Casa apart from your average Airbnb. Sleep in on a soft cloud of dove grey and blush linen in the lust-worthy bedroom, and borrow The Beach People towels when it’s time to hit the sand. A roomy rainshower dominates the sleek bathroom, where Jaye’s eye is evident in little luxuries – a GHD straightener and Kevin Murphy’s Angel Wash replace the standard issue. Of course, professional help never goes astray when it comes to staging spontaneous shoots for social media, and that’s where Cacti Mi Casa’s connections come in handy. With my partner sent to scope out the surf, it’s just a few steps through sliding doors to my appointment at the adjoining Edwards and Co hair salon. An ocean dip at Tallows may be a shortcut to sea-salt waves, but their stylists are masters of the mermaid mane. You can even have a wine while the magic happens. After one heavenly head massage and a few expert twists of the tongs, I’m ready to explore. Cacti Mi Casa is in Byron’s industrial estate – a few minutes’ drive to the town’s traditional tourist heart – but if you know where to look, you’ll find everything you need within its boundaries. The peaceful pocket off Ewingsdale Rd is home to an eclectic assortment of designers and diners, circus schools and studios, brewers and boardshapers, each espousing Byron’s creative soul in their own unique way. It’s here that you will find popular restaurant Barrio – “neighbourhood” in Spanish – which offers a smartly styled setting for lingering rosé-fuelled lunches. Its use of wood fire and charcoal elevates the everyday. In these hands, blackened V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

eggplant becomes unforgettable, and the broth spooned over grilled fish a talking point. Even the cocktails are intriguing – smoked-carrot margarita, perhaps? Eating in the Spanish style is as good an excuse as any for a siesta back at Cacti Mi Casa. We revive in time to soak up the sunset from the balcony, where a swing seat angled at the hinterland horizon is bathed in golden light. The views extend over rolling farmland to Mt Warning. If you can’t bear to budge, the kitchen has everything you need to make eating in feel special. If you do leave, the short trip into town rewards with cool cocktails at Light Years and dessert of new-season black figs with cinnamon doughnuts and mascarpone sorbet at The Restaurant at the Byron, at Byron Resort and Spa.

After a silent night in this quiet quarter of Byron, we wake to sunshine slanting through open windows. With the cute peppermint-painted bikes propped in the doorway for guest use, it’s just a lazy pedal down paperbark-lined paths to one of my favourite breakfast spots. Folk is the place I picture when I think of bygone Byron vibes. Later, we swap two wheels for four for a short and sweet Sunday drive to Killen Falls. An easy 10-minute wander from the carpark through the rare remnants of big scrub rainforest, the waterfall is one of the region’s most accessible. You can swim behind the curtain of water that crashes into the cool, misty cavern … and if that mermaid mane starts looking a little too authentic, you know where to go.

IF YOU GO STAY Cacti Mi Casa is on Airbnb and sleeps up to four adults from $230 a night. It is dog friendly so you don’t have to find a sitter for your sidekick. The self-contained space includes a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, a balcony and communal garden.

I Playful approach A mid-century apartment in Brisbane’s famed Torbreck develops a sense of fun

RAISING THE BAR … A sweeping, custom-made timber bench and step punctuate the kitchenliving room of the Torbreck apartment.

Michelle Bailey

conic Highgate Hill apartment tower Torbreck, built in 1960, deserves special consideration when it comes to renovation. Apartment owners and mid-century design enthusiasts Mat and Steph were keen to honour the building’s architectural heritage, along with architects Leah Gallagher and Marjorie Dixon, whose intentions were to balance the fun with the functional. “We wanted it to be modern but (we had to ask ourselves) how we could add that little spice of nostalgia to make it feel more mid-century,” Leah says. “We had to choose our moments to do that because we didn’t want to be faux heritage architects, we wanted to be contemporary and fun.” The aim was to deliver a spacious and dramatic interior for gathering and entertaining – several storeys in the air. The textures, materials, colour and lighting all helped create the visual spectacle, but less obvious changes included subtle spatial shifts to improve visual connections between rooms and the breathtaking views of Brisbane beyond. The big moves came in surrendering the second bedroom over to living space, and relocating the kitchen from a poky corner to the centre of the plan. A simple change in floor level, courtesy of a sweeping timber platform, helped define

the dining and kitchen territories within an otherwise open-plan arrangement. The visual centrepiece is the long island bench, whose marble circle inset and fine brass legs offer an attractive surface on which to rest your drink. “The step in the floor means that when you’re standing at the end of the bench, you are not in the kitchen or the dining room but at the bar,” Leah says. “And now when you’re standing in the kitchen, you

can have a conversation with others in the living room, and you are better placed to see the view.” In the kitchen, dining and living space, a “singular” visual quality is achieved by the sweeping timber joinery wall wrapping in a fluid motion across the room. The specially designed wall was made using hundreds of rounded hoop pine battens fixed to a plywood backing. Mat and Steph spent hours in the workshop

fixing the battens and applying the whitewash coating. Concealed behind the joinery wall are kitchen cupboards, living room storage, and a television. In the dining room, a shelf recess is finished with a marble top. Mat and Steph chose an impressive brass pendant light suspended above the dining table that sets the colour palette of the whole interior. Brass plate is used in the finger pulls on cabinetry, and thin strips of

brass were applied to the inside of shelves and on ceilings. “It’s not possible to sneak a skylight into an apartment so we used brass shim on the ceiling at the end of the corridor to create a golden reflection of the view outside,” Leah says. “It turned out to be a cost-effective and beautiful solution.” Architect: Kin Architects, kinarchitects.com.au Cabinetmaker: William McMahon Photography: Christopher Frederick Jones

LAST WORD

Phil Brown They are shockers! At the airport, in shops, wherever … if they see an opportunity to snake you, they will I don’t know about you but I hate queuing. Still, if I have to do it, I like to do it in an orderly and efficient fashion. It’s not rocket science but it’s amazing to me how many people have trouble queuing properly. In cafes I find some stand too far away from the counter so you don’t know if they are queuing or if they have already ordered and are just waiting. I would suggest that standing about a foot (I still use imperial measurements for queuing) from the counter is OK, but much further away and you’re not in the line. Some folk stand well back, and when you walk in front of them they get irate and say: “Hey, there’s a queue here.”

“Where?” I will answer, and will then give them some advice on how to queue – advice that is not always welcome. I think I should write a pamphlet on how to queue and hand it out to people in shops. In case you’re interested, a queue should be pretty tight … not too close to the person in front but not so much room that someone could walk between you. If you’re queuing and someone joins you, they must be a close family member or it’s a “chat and cut”, a term coined by writer and comedian Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame. That’s when you see someone you know near the front of a queue, you go and chat to them … and then

you’re in the queue. That is, you’ve pushed in! Don’t. Mostly I eschew queues if they are more than 10 people long. Sometimes I can circumvent queues altogether as a member of the media, and I love that. “Press!” I will say and saunter past the angry mob. In Paris a year or so ago, I wangled a special museum pass from the tourist authorities. We’d turn up at places where there were long queues, I’d flash my pass and go straight in while people glared at us. As hopeless as some Australians are when it comes to queuing, we’re better than the Russians, let me tell you. I found this out on my recent trip to Moscow.

They are shockers! At the airport, in shops, wherever you are, if they see an opportunity to snake you, they’ll take it. When I joined the long queue to Lenin’s Mausoleum in Red Square, I watched people cut and chat, and sometimes just barge in. At one point I shouted, “Oi! You can’t do that!” Everyone looked at me, including one of the guys in uniform policing the line, and I thought I’d better keep my mouth shut … not wanting to appear on a future episode of Banged Up Abroad. But rules are rules, people. I will start writing my pamphlet on how to queue soon so let me know if you want a copy. It should be a riveting read.

Tudor elegance This heritage-listed Tudor-revival house stands out as one of Brisbane’s most distinct estates. The circa-1928 manor combines the designs of late Brisbane architect EP Trewern with the contemporary style of Richard Groves, who has influenced recent renovations. The house’s striking façade combines brick, stonework, stucco, timber and intersecting gables. Sitting to the right of the entry foyer to the property, the formal lounge features polished timber flooring, a coffered ceiling, antique chandeliers and a brick fireplace. Sliding doors open into a library, while walls of windows accentuate the sunroom on the opposite side. Part of the modern extensions, the open-plan family and dining rooms have polished concrete floors, soaring ceilings and walls of glass and exposed brick. The adjoining kitchen features an island benchtop comprising marble, stone and timber, along with stainless steel appliances and a butler’s pantry. This floor also encompasses a children’s room, second bathroom with an eggshell

bathtub, a powder room and an Italianinspired loggia. Outside, an expansive stone courtyard with a glass-enclosed pool extends out to a full-size tennis court. Stairs next to the entry foyer lead up to the first of two upper wing levels, which has two bedrooms, a glass-framed office and a rooftop terrace. The second wing level features a bathroom, two bedrooms, and the main bedroom with its walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.
