Brooke Falvey He was airborne and I was under attack ... this wasn’t a one-off swooping; it was calculated and continuous. He swooped and I squealed With shopping bags in hand, I locked my car and headed towards the mailbox, singing to myself. It was a beautiful September afternoon; the sun was shining and I was happy. Then I saw him. He stood in front of the gate and stared me down with his beady eyes. As he started to move in my direction, I knew I was in trouble. Without taking my eyes off him, I retreated to the safety of my car and took off. Brooke 0 – Magpie 1. Brace yourself Brisbane, the magpies have landed. A few years ago, while power walking
around Ascot Kath & Kim style, I spotted a magpie chilling on the ground under a big gum tree. He looked harmless, casually walking back and forth, so I continued towards the nearby railway overpass. Then, in the blink of an eye, it happened; he was airborne and I was under attack. I didn’t even have an upside-down icecream bucket for protection. And this wasn’t a one-off swooping; it was a calculated and continuous attack. He swooped and I squealed. After narrowly missing my head the first time around, he turned and came at me
again and again, his pointy beak heading straight for my baby blues like they were bullseyes. I ran, screamed and waved my arms around as though my life depended on it. (All the things WikiHow advises you not to do when under attack.) I wanted to yell that my brother used to play rugby for Souths Magpies and that I sometimes wear black and white so I’m practically one of his kind, but there was no time for introductions. The 40 metres between the tree and the railway overpass felt like four kilometres, and I say that as someone who can barely

run four metres. As I zigzagged across the street I had a near-miss with a ute. The driver seemed shocked that a Lycra-clad woman yelling profanities usually reserved for drunken sailors had almost landed on his bonnet. Once I made it up the overpass and out of his territory, I realised karma had caught up to me; years ago a mate and I sat in our car laughing at someone being swooped while riding his bike. So I’ve decided to go incognito – I’ll be dying my hair and wearing an ice-cream bucket each time I leave the house.

Time of her life Queensland-bred Ricki-Lee Coulter is primed to shine as she tours her tribute to A Star is Born Hannah Davies
R
icki-Lee Coulter has some big shoes to fill. The 33-year-old will channel Hollywood superstar Lady Gaga when she sings hits from A Star Is Born at Brisbane’s Tivoli this month. And despite the pressure, she’s looking forward to it. “I think I’ve watched A Star Is Born 20 times now,” she says. “The soundtrack came out before the movie and I fell in love with all the big songs on it. “Then I saw the movie and I loved the ode to Judy Garland in it. It reminded me so much of being a little girl, singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and wanting so much to be a big star like her.” It’s been 15 years since the Gold Coast girl shot to fame after appearing on Australian Idol. Now she’s a multi-platinum-selling ARIA award-nominated singer-songwriter who is quite rightly one of Australia’s mostloved popstars and a favourite host of TV’s Australia’s Got Talent. Having moved to Sydney for work, Ricki-Lee returned to the Sunshine State recently to perform her dynamic version of the iconic Love You Queensland at an exclusive gig in Brisbane on-board P&O Cruise liner Pacific Dawn. The song will be played on the ship every time it sails from Brisbane and Ricki-Lee is honoured to be a part of it. “I’m a very proud Queenslander and I grew up hearing this song. I’ve been able to do lots of things in my career and it’s nice to do something that is so iconic.
“It’s also lovely to come home and see family. I love it here. We have some of the best beaches in the world, the people are really funny and down-to-earth and the food is great.” And it seems life at sea agrees with her. “I’d love to be part of the cruise ship entertainment,” she says. “There is so much talent on board. The shows are amazing and I love the piano bars.” When the time is right she’d also like to try her hand at musical theatre. “I have been asked to do some really awesome shows before but it’s always felt that it hasn’t been the right time and the right show,” she says. “Grease is awesome. I would love to have a crack at Chicago and Les Miserables is my favourite.” In the meantime, she’s focusing on the tour. As well as songs from A Star Is Born, Ricki-Lee will take a trip down memory lane, performing hits from some of her defining moments on Idol including I Have Nothing, Proud Mary, and Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough. She will then treat fans to some of her own songs – Can’t Touch It, Raining Diamonds and Sunshine to name but a few. “I think the show will end up being a massive party,” she laughs. “I hope I can do the songs justice and that everyone will have a big old singalong with me.” Ricki-Lee Live in Concert, The Tivoli, Fortitude Valley, Oct 18, 7pm, $65. thetivoli.com.au

Mane players They are world-class stylists shaping hair trends and nurturing the talents of tomorrow. Meet Brisbane’s hairdressing heroes CHRISTIAN ALEXANDER & DALE DORNING
STYLE MASTERS ... Christian Alexander and Dale Dorning. Picture: AAP/Richard Waugh
Their client list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood stars and royalty, but Christian Alexander and Dale Dorning’s Brisbane salon is very much a sanctuary away from the bright lights. At their boutique headquarters, in the Bell Brothers building in Fortitude Valley, a crystal chandelier hovers above antique furniture and artwork and the scent of luxury burns through the incense. As Christian and I chat over a rosé, Dale’s focus never wavers from the client in front of him – he continues to blow-dry her hair and talk to her with such care and intimacy, like they are lifelong friends. After years of being surrounded by celebrities, the pair’s priorities are the ordinary people in their chairs every day. “The arses in my business will always come first, I don’t care how famous you are,” Christian says. In fact, many of their clients – stars and everyday folk alike – have become their close friends, including Australia’s Got Talent host Ricki-Lee Coulter who pops in and even helps around the salon when she’s in town. After almost a decade of friendship, Ricki-Lee handpicked Christian and Dale to fly to Sydney each week to do her hair and makeup for the show. “Ricki’s a mate. I think she’s a frustrated hair and make-up artist, she’s so handson,” Dale says. “When Ricki’s here she answers the phone, sweeps up hair and tells everyone she’s taking appointments.” The friends have more than half a century of combined experience in the hair and beauty industry, and have risen up through the ranks to become two of the biggest names in the biz. Both had humble beginnings, dropping out of school to work
as apprentices in local salons. Dale left school at 15 and moved from country Victoria to the suburbs of Melbourne to take up a hairdressing apprenticeship after being inspired by his hairdresser and “glamour bogan” cousin. Christian was 16 when he started his apprenticeship on the Gold Coast. “I didn’t like school, didn’t want to be there and I thought I’m not going to waste my time doing it,” Dale says. “My mum said to me ‘Back to school for you on Monday’ and I said ‘No, I’ve got a job’. I moved out of home within weeks, moved to the suburbs. I was on $95 a week and I was paying $50 a week on rent.” Both had second jobs to subsidise their income as apprentices. Dale was washing dishes, and Christian – perhaps more glamorously – was paid to dance on a podium at the then Broadbeach’s Fortunes Nightclub within Jupiter’s Casino. “It was hard,” Christian says. “I remember sitting on the washing machine in the back room of the salon crying several times. But I knew it wasn’t forever. I knew I just had to get the apprenticeship done then I could move on.” And move on they did. In the late ’80s, 19-year-old Christian went to work for the acclaimed Jacques Dessange in Paris for nine months, to learn the French way of doing hair. “Hair (in France) was about complementing the individual rather than what’s on trend and what’s in fashion,” he says. “I think I’ve taken that with me my whole career.” Meanwhile Dale was finding his feet as a makeup artist at Channel 9, working on shows such as Hey Hey It’s Saturday and the soap opera Chances. It was from there

they both fell into the world of celebrity. Dale later became the full-time touring hair and makeup artist for the blossoming star Delta Goodrem and started working on music videos for Sophie Monk. Blonde specialist Christian had also worked in the music world, taking Brisbane’s Kate Miller-Heidke platinum, and styling her distinctive look for music videos and album cover art. Then between the two of them, they travelled the world to do hair and makeup for some of the biggest names including Amy Winehouse, Jennifer Hawkins, Orlando Bloom, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Miranda Kerr, Jared Leto, Mel B, Jennifer Hawkins, Chrissy Amphlett and Absolutely Fabulous stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. When their worlds collided about a decade ago, backstage at Fashion Week on the Gold Coast, the connection was instant. “We were just like the two naughty kids at school, we got on like a house on fire so we’ve been best friends ever since,” Christian says. “We get each other. We’ve had such similar trajectories in work. And it’s fun to work with your friend. We laugh all day.” These days Christian and Dale, now 39 and 46 respectively, are enjoying life away from the spotlight. Christian opened his salon Christian Alexander Atelier five years ago, with Dale coming to work for him three years ago. “Now, he can’t get rid of me,” Dale says. “He’s always saying ‘I’ve got to change those bloody locks’.” SARAH MATTHEWS Atelier Christian Alexander, 57 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley. christian-alexander.com.au
BRAD RIXON I’ve stepped out of the morning hubbub on Edward St and into a swanky New York loft. Except I haven’t – I’m at Rixon Hair and gosh, it’s beautiful. The multi-award-winning salon takes up the enormous first floor of a heritage building in the CBD and it feels secret and exclusive with its direct elevator access. The whole vibe is Scandipenthouse meets urban warehouse with exposed brick walls, trendy chipboard floors and freestanding mirrors. It was awarded Best Salon Design at the 2018 Australian Hair Expo Awards. But I’m not here to marvel at the makings of the place, I’m here for a style session with the head honcho, owner/ creative director Brad Rixon, 45.
He comes with an impressive resume including an apprenticeship with leading Melbourne hairdresser John Morrey before time spent working with Brisbane hairdressing legends Benni Tognini and Stelios Papas. These godfathers of hair inspired Brad to open his own salon with wife and Rixon salon director Sharon in 2000. “It was the creativity and connection to fashion that first attracted me to the hair industry,” Brad tells me as I settle in with a cappuccino. “Plus my grandfather was the first of many hairdressers in the family, so being born into the industry helped motivate me to run a successful salon.” And that he does, with shout-outs over the ensuing years in Vogue Australia, Marie Claire and Harper’s
Bazaar as Brisbane’s go-to stylist. He’s also an ambassador for L’Oreal Professionnel a role that involves him teaching the next generation of Australian hairdressers. I’ve only recently had a cut and colour (what was I thinking?), so for me Brad recommends a tousled, textured blow wave for my shoulder length, blunt, blonde bob. As he goes to work laying the foundations of my blow wave, we chat about the changing face of the industry, and how he is staying the course. “Social media has been huge for hairdressing,” he says. “And not always in a good way.” Aside from influencers looking to trim the cost of their cut in exchange for Instagram shout-outs, there are also clients who ignore the advice of trained, industry professionals in their attempt to get the same look as their heavily filtered Instagram idols. “There’s a knack to advising a client who comes in with unachievable expectations,” Brad says. “But also people shouldn’t be put in a box,” he says of following trends. “We all have unique face shapes and skin types and should celebrate our own unique style.” Unless that involves a scrunchie. “If I had to name a pet hair hate, that would be it,” he says. But then who needs a scrunchie with hair as good as mine now looks? He’s created magic with his curling wand and my hair is looking full-bodied with stacks of movement. Brad sends me off with a massive hug. I’ve been sitting with him for an hour, and his warm, genuine character only adds to the feeling of sanctuary you get in his salon. It’s obvious why he keeps clients for a lifetime. “I love the buzz you get from helping someone feel better about themselves,” he says. And I love my new look. CRAIG SMITH
With revered Tibetan lama His Eminence the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche, Jigme Losel Wangpo
Meditation Philosophy Wisdom
This will be no ordinary cut and colour. That’s my first thought as I await a hairstyling session with 2019 Australian Hairdresser of the Year Craig Smith. I’m sitting in his sleek Wilston salon Fruition Style Ambition amidst natural light and the buzz of Friday morning activity and my impression, as I watch him absorbed in his craft with the lucky lady prior to me, is that he’s more artist than hairdresser. I know only the bare facts about Craig; he’s 49 and presently pulling off Vans, a vest and a mullet; he rides a HarleyDavidson; sends his senior stylists to the prestigious Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles each year; and founded and owns Fruition plus another salon, Helmet in Nundah. And when it comes to hair – he’s a magician. “Great hair!” is the first thing Craig says to me as our session begins, and it’s so refreshing to begin a haircut with a compliment. He’s warm and intuitive and asks lots of questions about me – not just about my hair – and this holistic approach to hairdressing is a world away from standard. There’s also talk of champagne. I’m hooked. “As I’ve grown as a stylist, it’s more about deconstructing that perfection – so starting with being technical, then letting it exhale and have emotion or movement,” Craig says. So we decide on a subtle cut to add body and movement, with a full set of foils for a touch of the dramatic. While he works, I delve. Craig began
hairdressing in Toowoomba (“I was 15 when the penny dropped – it’s a creative space, they play cool music, I’d be outnumbered by girls, and I could wear what I want”), and 20 years on, he still loves his craft. In 2013, he took part in the Shaping Futures program in Vietnam, a Schwarzkopf global initiative in community responsibility that teaches hairdressing skills to disadvantaged teens. It changed his life. He spent two weeks leading the cutting
component of a six-week training program with kids from local villages, all of whom were orphaned or abandoned by their families. “On the trip, something inside me changed and I knew I couldn’t walk away from these kids,” says Craig, who has a three-year-old with his wife Wendy Yuen. “The program gave these kids an injection of what their future might look like, but then it was the next step which was so crucial, and I knew there was a role to play in actively helping to guide that next step.”
In response, Craig created his charity Project Feel Good and with the support of his Fruition staff, imparts skills to these youths to provide them with a chance at independent living. Side note: he made such an impact, one of the kids has a tattoo of Craig’s face on his arm. The humble hero is also flown around the world on average five times a year to teach at the world’s leading education hubs; appears at the world’s biggest hair shows; works with the best in the business in developing trends and techniques; speaks at international forums; and consults for the biggest brands. Meanwhile, my hair is looking coverworthy, and it’s time for colour. I’m introduced to Fruition’s colour specialist Shantelle, whose glamorous ’80s-esque hair I covet, and she sets about transforming my locks from brown to all shades of gold and auburn. Takeaway thoughts: there was never that moment of distrust I sometimes get with hairdressers; I felt as though I was in expert hands the whole session. And this is a passionate team – Craig has cultivated a creative, inspired environment, no doubt due to his flair for mentoring and teaching. And the champagne was excellent. LIVING COLOUR ... Hillary Wall in the studio; with daughter Sunny. we were mums, and painting is a wonderful way to do that. I know how therapeutic and relaxing painting can be, and how it can make you feel connected to yourself. I felt there were so many baby activity options to get out of the house that were baby focused: play groups, music classes, rhyme and story times. But these activities didn’t make me feel fulfilled as a person. I started to feel out of touch with myself. I wanted to feel like a grown up, like the independent woman I was before I gave birth and had another human with me all of the time. What was the biggest challenge for you as a new mum? The expectations I held for myself. I thought I should be able do it all, and I wanted to do it all, and it made me feel anxious trying to keep up with my own expectations. I wanted to hold myself to some pretty high standards and ended up feeling a little bit isolated because of it. This is why I know that our painting sessions will benefit other women like me. It’s important for women to know that we are allowed to take a morning to ourselves, to watch paint swirl on our canvas, and enjoy the process of creating something for fun and for our self expression.
Brush with creativity Hillary Wall puts fun in the picture with art classes for new mums Hillary Wall, 34 Cork & Chroma founder and creative director What’s new with you? We’ve just started Mummart baby-friendly painting classes at our Cork & Chroma paint and sip studio in South Brisbane. It’s an open studio session time for new mothers to come in and paint, with their bubs in arms. It’s self-guided, so mums don’t need to be on anyone else’s schedule, and can attend to their baby’s needs. A Cork & Chroma artist provides tips and guidance along with stepby-step instructions for the mums who are keen for a bit of structure. However, it’s also a time where women can bring their own inspiration and paint whatever they’d like. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
What has been your favourite ‘mum’ moment so far? Taking a solo trip with Sunny to Hobart, to visit (annual music and arts festival) Dark Mofo and meet some of my team there for a work trip. It was a thrilling experience because it was time for me and her to do something special together and go on an adventure. Where do you get your creative flair? Both my parents are quite excitable and creative, and my big sister was very expressive growing up, so I think I got my original creative flair from their influence. These days, I’m lucky to work with some of the most creative people I’ve ever met, so our team is always inspiring me to stretch my creative notions and express different parts of myself.
How did that come about? After I had my first baby, Sunny, I struggled to find places where I felt comfortable with my new baby, manoeuvring through the things like nappy changes and breastfeeding in public. I discovered a few of the local movie theatres had babes-in-arms movie sessions, and it was a wonderful way to get out of the house and feel connected with myself, and other new mums. I liked the idea of creating a space like this for other new mothers in Brisbane in our paint studio.
What was your ‘aha moment’? I remember that moment like it was yesterday! I was sitting under the faux Eiffel Tower in Milton having a red wine with my best friend Cristine. (Little did I know how many Eiffel Towers I would paint while drinking red wine over the next few years!) The idea struck me like a lightning bolt. My husband B.J. came to meet us for a drink and I told him about the idea, and we started making it happen the next day. I’ve never had an experience quite like that. It was totally meant to be.
So it’s a time-out for new mums? As new mums, it’s paramount that we give ourselves time and space to stay connected to the women we were before

FOOD + DRINK
Special order Why Jumbo’s creative take on Thai is a welcome addition to Brisbane’s dining scene RESTAURANT Tony Harper This might sound a little melodramatic, but the truth is I’ve been waiting for somewhere like Jumbo to open in Brisbane for years. Decades even. It’s a Thai restaurant with equal parts tradition and imagination, in a splendid setting above the Embassy Hotel. Sure, we have had Longtime strutting its stuff for a while now, but that’s more rock ’n’ roll Thai meets mod-oz; and there’s Thai-WiRat – food from the streets and longhouses. Jumbo is luxe, polished and exotic. Which isn’t to say that Jumbo sits within the same confines as every suburban Thai – fishcakes, spring rolls, curry puffs and moneybags; green, red, massaman and Penang curries; pad Thai; stir fries – a menu that’s repeated thrice in every suburb. The Jumbo kitchen has taken those traditional dishes and spun them with the stuff of Queensland. Like grilled Queensland scallops with finger lime (that’s bush tucker) and fried shallot ($16). And bao (salapao) with softshelled crabs, ginger and chilli mayonnaise ($12). Green curry with Angus beef cheeks ($34, pictured right); southern-Thai yellow curry with local sand crab and betel leaves ($42). It’s a clever melding of the local fruits and meats that we Queenslanders prize and the dishes of Thailand.
TASTE SENSATION ... Jumbo Thai melds traditional ethnic cuisine with bush tucker – locally sourced fruits, vegetables and meats. We begin with betel leaves holding a sticky, sweet ball of coconut, peanuts and tofu, topped with smoked trout and salmon roe ($16). Are they too sweet? Maybe, but they are seriously delicious, and the trout is a nice touch. Better are butterfly-pea flower steamed dumplings with crab ($14). They’re gorgeously blue, textural, dainty, just beautiful. Larb, I reckon, is the litmus test for Thai. It’s a relatively simple dish, but also a balancing act: larb can be great and it can be mundane. The Jumbo version ($24) is pork-based and riddled with pieces of liver. Top marks for the offal. That’s authenticity rearing its head. It’s a meat-heavy version, the toasted rice more a background component than a feature. And it’s tame: we ask for Thai-hot and I don’t reckon they believe us. Sure, it’s runny-nose territory but well short of what it could be. Still, that’s a quibble: it’s a decadent larb.
Even more decadent is the yellow curry with sand crab ($42). There are so many big, fat chunks of fresh meat, it’s quite extraordinary as well as rich, and filling. But dish of the day goes to a bowl of som-tam with salted egg ($21). It’s explosively flavoured – sour, sweet, savoury and salty – and invigoratingly fresh. But, once again, it could use more chilli. There is plenty of choice in terms of drinks – Thai beers, craft beers, ginger beers and cider; a great list of cocktails and a solid, lengthy wine list, culminating in a rather well-priced bottle of 1996 Grange ($1100). Although I don’t like the idea of spoiling the Grange with Thai food, or spoiling the Thai food with Grange. But each to their own. I’m a fan of Jumbo; I love it. It has been cunningly pieced together using an intimate knowledge of Thai cuisine and a grasp of the Brisbane market. At last!

RECIPE
The odd couple They’re not a classic culinary combo, but carrot and buttermilk are a tasty twosome, writes Alastair McLeod
Carrots and buttermilk aren’t necessarily going to rival tomatoes and basil or oysters and Guinness any time soon, but they do make for a dynamic duo nonetheless. Carrot cake with a buttermilk glaze is lively and luminescent. Carrot soup finished with buttermilk is transcendent, and carrots juiced with buttermilk and ginger are the perfect elixir. The fat in the buttermilk serves to give length of flavour while the mild acidity gives contrast to the sweet earthiness of the carrots. Look out peaches and cream!
HONEY ROASTED CARROTS, BUTTERMILK, RYE PANGRATTATO Ingredients 2 bunches baby carrots, scrubbed and trimmed, with tops and stems reserved 1tbs honey 50g butter 100ml extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 200ml buttermilk 150g toasted rye breadcrumbs Method Preheat the oven to 210C. Toss the carrots with honey, butter and half the olive oil, and season generously. Place in a roasting tray lined with baking paper and bake for 20-30 mins, tossing every 10 mins. Meanwhile, plunge all but a handful of the carrot tops into a pot of boiling water, count to 10, then remove them and arrest the cooking in iced water. Drain again and squeeze out water. Blend with the remaining oil until smooth and then pass through a fine sieve. To serve, pour buttermilk on to the base of the serving dish, followed by the carrots. Sprinkle with rye crumbs, drizzle with the carrot top oil and strew with remaining greens. Serves 4 as a side dish

hen her friend gifted her an $800 bottle of champagne, Melanie Myers thought she’d better keep it for a special occasion. “I said I’d wait ’til I got my first book published,” laughs Melanie. And now she has. Winner of the 2018 Queensland Literary Award for best emerging writer, the mother, academic and “occasional actor”, has plenty to celebrate, having penned a captivating mystery novel set in 1940s Brisbane. Four years in the making, Meet Me At Lennon’s centres on protagonist Olivia, a university student struggling with her studies, her relationship with her father, and her love life. Throwing herself into her thesis research, she stumbles upon details of a young woman found murdered on the banks of the river in wartime Brisbane. Suddenly Olivia’s life becomes much more interesting. The River Girl murder leads the young student into the world of ration books and penny candy, of nylons and “lunch clubs” at historic Lennon’s. The hotel opened in 1941 and was “the swankiest hotel Brisbane had ever seen”, says Melanie. It was frequented by colonels and generals, including General MacArthur, who lived in a suite with his wife and son. The book also explores tensions between Australian soldiers and American GIs at the time, as well as amplifying the voices of women who entertained US troops. It’s a period which fascinates the newly minted author. “The Australian homefront in 1942 was a time of huge social disruption and a really interesting time for women as they mobilised into the workforce and experienced a degree of unprecedented
sexual freedom, due in no small part to the arrival of Americans to our shores,” explains Melanie. “All that aside, from a superficial point of view, I love the look of the clothing, hair, music and films from the era.” While trawling the archives at the State Library of Queensland, Melanie stumbled across the story of a waitress at Lennon’s and decided to include it in the book. “She saved up all her tips to buy a fur coat for $15. But then (when) she found out that fur coats were worn by the women who dated US soldiers and they were frowned upon, she burnt it ... but not before having a picture taken in it.” Melanie’s research for the novel turned up plenty of fabulous colour from the era, including pictures (above) of Corporal William R. Wells who served on the USS Chicago on a goodwill mission in Brisbane in 1941. “When you decide to write a book it doesn’t happen overnight,” she says. “With Meet Me At Lennon’s I did a lot of mental gymnastics and suffered a lot of sleepless nights thinking about things, adding bits up and pulling stuff together.” Melanie, who lives at Stafford with her partner Glenn Hunt, a photographer, has a doctorate of creative arts and teaches at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She’s now celebrating with her Bollinger, and says has at least one more novel in her. A keen community theatre performer, she also wants to get on stage again. “I’ve got ideas for a couple of books and I’d also like to write a play,” she says. “I’m also totally obsessed with A Streetcar Named Desire at the moment. I played the character of Blanche once before and I’d love to have another go.” Meet Me At Lennon’s by Melanie Myers, UQP, $29.95, is out now

wanted to sit in the wooden booth but I held back. I love a cafe that has booths and those Greek cafes that used to dot the landscape had some rippers. This one happens to be part of the exhibition Meet me at the Paragon at the State Library of Queensland. Like me, you will go to this exhibition and wonder if you’re allowed to sit in the booth. Here’s the good news ... you are! I’d also like to order something off one of the menus displayed nearby. The chicken and spaghetti would do me, washed down with a nice cold milkshake served in one of those big anodised cups. But this is an exhibition, not a real cafe, more’s the pity. But what a wonderful exhibition it is, a fascinating social history that explains why there are so many Greeks in Queensland. Many of them migrated here to run the oyster bars that were so popular in the early 20th century. When the oyster industry fell over they moved into cafes, everywhere, and this exhibition has some fascinating photos and memorabilia about all that. The exhibition grew out of a fellowship at the State Library during which author Toni Risson (inset) researched the subject. That research became her book, Brisbane’s Greek Cafes: A Million Malted Milks and formed the basis of this exhibition, which
takes us beyond Brisbane into regional areas where these Greek cafes were part of the fabric of society. We all have memories of them, as does State Librarian and chief executive Vicki McDonald. “I have fond memories of visiting the local Greek cafe in Dalby as a child,” Vicki says. “It was always such a special treat to have milkshakes on a hot day after a morning of grocery shopping.” From the city to one-street country towns, almost everywhere had a Greek cafe. Up to 10 operated in regional centres like Toowoomba during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Cafes were open from 7am until midnight every day and when the sign proclaimed “Meals At All Hours”, that’s what it meant. Despite being Greek they didn’t serve Greek food in those days but concentrated on British and American fare. Good solid tucker is what they served and I’m getting hungry even thinking about it. Food is an important memory marker and this exhibition will bring the smells and the taste of ice-cold milkshakes flooding back. Those were the days. JUDY (M) hhhhk Director Rupert Goold Starring Renee Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock There are times during this heartwrenching biopic about late-career Judy Garland when Renee Zellweger disappears so completely into her character that the effect is almost disturbing. The elfin haircut, the smudged red lipstick and the fabulously flamboyant ’60s outfits do their bit – discreetly supported by a set of prosthetic teeth. But while the Bridget Jones star nails the diminutive entertainer’s look and mannerisms, it’s her gutsy “live” stage shows that elevate Judy to a whole other level. Zellweger sings Garland classics such as For Once In My Life and Come Rain Or Come Shine with such conviction, the audience is utterly in her thrall. It’s an extraordinary vocal achievement. But the tension the actress generates between Garland’s charisma as a performer and her aching need and vulnerability as a person is what ultimately has us hanging on her every phrase. Even when the audience is in the palm of Garland’s hand, those enormous brown eyes convey an emptiness from which there is no coming back. Heightening the drama is the state of the singer’s vocal chords, which are so shot, she’s never entirely sure what will come out. And then, of course, there’s the alcohol and substance abuse. While Judy is much more than a mere trainwreck story, the film is set only six months before Garland’s death from an

Her penultimate show at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, where the addled, antagonistic performer is booed off stage, is almost unbearable to watch. Director Rupert Goold’s adaptation of Peter Quilter’s stage play End of the Rainbow isn’t flawless. Although MGM’s treatment of Garland as a child actor was unforgivable, the stylised Wizard of Oz flashbacks portray studio head Louis B. Mayer (Richard Cordery) and the young star’s minder as
pantomime villains. This provides a detachment from their behaviour that feels at odds with the raw intimacy of the scenes in her London hotel room. Judy’s mawkish ending also sells Zellweger short. But with the help of a mesmerising central performance, Goold gets the important bits right. There’s a tender sequence involving a gay couple who wait each night for Garland outside the stage door. After one show, she accompanies these devoted fans back to their apartment on a whim. In a seamless
GEMINI MAN (M) hhjjj Director Ang Lee Starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen Technology gets in the way of the story in this 3D-Plus action thriller, which has its audience seeing double in more ways than one. Will Smith plays two versions of the same character in Gemini Man – one an ageing assassin, the other his young and callow clone. Perhaps because the Hollywood A-lister’s focus is spilt, he does neither job particularly well. Smith is a likeable screen presence and he acquits himself well in the pedal-to-the-metal action sequences, shot by Oscar-winning Australian cinematographer Dion Beebe. But his version of a hitman who belatedly acquires a conscience – a la Jason Bourne – is barely skin deep. The actor fares a little better in his motion-capture performance as the unformed Junior, largely due to the novelty factor of the 16 BRISBANE NEWS October 9-15, 2019
DOUBLE TAKE ... Will Smith plays two roles in Gemini Man but neither is among his best work. digital effects. And that brings us neatly to Gemini Man’s second, unintentional focus issue. Two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, The Life Of Pi) continues to experiment with the highresolution 3D format he pioneered in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016) in this rare foray into the action genre.
Sending his audience cross-eyed is one of the unfortunate teething issues of the emerging technology – perhaps because the theatrical infrastructure has yet to catch up. In the screening this reviewer attended, the audio track was also out of synch, giving the impression of a bad dub. Lee is convinced that detail captured by
meld of screenwriting, direction and performance, the filmmakers capture Garland’s loneliness and the two men’s sadness, translating her status as a gay icon into something meaningful. And Zellweger has some terrific lines, which she delivers with wit and panache. “I just want what everybody wants. I just seem to have a harder time getting it,” Garland tells a TV interviewer at one point. And the Oscar goes to … There hasn’t been a female performance to touch it this year.
a high frame rate of 60-120 frames per second creates a more immersive cinematic experience – and, to be fair, once moviegoers’ eyes have adjusted, there is an almost visceral intensity to some key set pieces. But when the new digital aesthetic is even fractionally off, it can just as easily throw the audience out of the story. Gee-whiz moments, such as the one in which fragments of a plate-glass window appear to shatter into the auditorium, are similarly distracting. All of which detracts from an already shallow screenplay. Mary Elizabeth Winstead does her best to level the playing field as a kick-arse Defense Intelligence Agency operative. Clive Owen eats up the role of arch nemesis; a military tycoon working on a secret project that aims to genetically engineer a breed of super warriors who will kill without remorse. With hindsight, there appears to have been a very good reason why this project languished in development hell for such a long time. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

Amazing graze Drink in the scenery, feast on fine country fare and enjoy an arms-wide-open welcome touring the Granite Belt’s boutique wineries Leesa Maher
T
he world’s friendliest dog is the first to greet me in the Granite Belt and it quickly turns into a bit of a theme on my weekend of wine tasting. I discover many cellar doors have unofficial doggie greeters of varying size and cuteness and they even have their own hashtag: #winedog. It makes each welcome all the warmer in this part of the world where country hospitality is a given. Though Bella the beagle is not strictly a #winedog. She lives next door to my accommodation at 31 The Rocks, just a few minutes outside Stanthorpe, but spends most of her time with the guests who come and go from the self-contained, family-friendly villas that snake up the side of a huge granite hill. We arrive at the bush idyll just on dusk after a leisurely three-hour drive from Brisbane. On the border between Queensland and NSW, the Granite Belt sits at an elevation of about 1000m above sea level and the landscape is dramatic and diverse, with Triassic granite formations emerging from thick forests, 20 BRISBANE NEWS October 9-15, 2019
and strawberry fields, vineyards and apple orchards intersecting in a living, patchwork quilt. The air smells clean and fresh as Bella, together with 31 The Rocks owners Scott and Debbie Bradburn, lead us to our modern, two-bedroom villa. Entry is via a large timber deck, with barbecue and outdoor dining setting, with glorious bushland views. Inside is a small kitchen and dining area, living room, bathroom and two bedrooms. It’s all so cosy and comfortable. While Debbie, basket in hand, stocks the kitchen with fresh bread, milk and juice for breakfast the next morning, Scott explains how the pot belly stove works – easy as pie, even for us city dwellers. And given it’s chilly mid-May when we visit, and Stanthorpe is famous for its brittle winters, we cannot wait to get that fire crackling. We get the stove well stoked before dinner at Varias Restaurant at the nearby Queensland College of Wine Tourism, where our cauliflower schnitzel with beetroot hommus and homemade porky
sausages with apple and pear slaw are expertly made by the students, using local ingredients. Perfect on a chilly night. My wintry sojourn is difficult to reconcile with the Granite Belt’s recent bushfire crisis, but thankfully only relatively small areas were affected, and the majority of the beautiful landscape around Stanthorpe and nearby Ballandean – home of the award-winning Ballandean Estate winery – was untouched. “We’re rising to the challenges of fire and drought and the best donation you can give us is to take a holiday – oh, and bring your friends too,” says Ann Bourke, Granite Belt Wine & Tourism president. “Now, more than ever, the Granite Belt is inviting you with open arms to explore and unearth some amazing experiences this springtime.” One of the best ways to see the area is by Grazing the Granite Belt, a weekend event (the next one is Nov 9-10) that allows you to indulge in local wines and dozens of gourmet dishes. The ticket price of $125 buys you a book of food and wine
vouchers to use at 10 cellar doors, and hop-on, hop-off buses ferry you between the vineyards. The ticket includes a barbecue breakfast back at the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre – on picturesque Quart Pot Creek – on the Sunday morning, where you can chat with winemakers who cook breakfast and bring the wines you purchased the day before. It’s a glorious outing – ideal for a girls’ trip – and on my visit the vines looked splendid dressed in their autumnal red and gold foliage. We start with a sangiovese rose and morning coffee at Jester Hill Wines before heading to Ballandean Estate, founded by Queensland wine industry “father” Angelo Puglisi, where we sample and buy bottles of the 2017 Opera Block Shiraz and 2017 Malbec. The winery’s The Barrelroom restaurant is serving up all manner of delicacies (including Nonna Mary’s tiramisu) – each dish paired with one of their drops – and we opt for the oyster Kilpatrick spring rolls with lime and soy dipping sauce. COUNTRY MILE ... (Clockwise from left) The huge granite boulders that inspired the name of Balancing Rock Wines at Stanthorpe; Casley Mount Hutton Winery; Ballandean Estate’s Robyn Puglisi-Henderson and Leeanne Puglisi-Gangemi; a villa at 31 The Rocks, Stanthorpe.
Our visit is made all the more special when Robyn Puglisi-Henderson pulls up a chair and fills us in on her family’s winemaking tradition which dates back to 1930 when Salvatore Cardillo, an Italian immigrant, brought his family to the region and planted table grapes. Salvatore made wine from the fruit, which he sold locally. His son-in-law Alfio Puglisi then took up the baton before passing it to Robyn’s parents, Angelo and his wife Mary. The couple decided to make wine commercially, replanting their vineyard with wine grapes, and were the first, in 1970, to establish a cellar door on the Granite Belt. Ballandean Estate is now one of the region’s leading wineries and it is Robyn and her sister Leeanne Puglisi-Gangemi who now manage the business. With all the chatting we have missed the bus but, never mind, another one rolls along a few minutes later and we’re off to Balancing Rock Wines for steamed mussels in a cream and white wine reduction paired with the winery’s 2017 Joy Chardonnay. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
Balancing Rock is owned by Brisbanebred David and Lori Broadbent who fell in love with the Granite Belt after holidaying in the Stanthorpe district. The pair bought a vineyard and in 2016 established their Balancing Rock label, which takes its name from a huge granite structure which sits among the shiraz vines. The couple’s wonderful cellar door, a quaint corrugated iron structure with tasting tables made from upcycled vintage doors, was named Best Small Cellar Door 2019 by Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine. The fine wines and heavenly setting make Balancing Rock a must-visit. The lazy day continues with visits to Twisted Gum Wines for potato gnocchi with pulled mallow lamb and a 2015 Shiraz and, lastly, to Casley Mount Hutton Wines + Cafe for Stanthorpe apple pie cake with whipped cream and a 2016 Sweet White Muscadello. It sounds like a packed day, but it’s not. The pace is easygoing and we laugh a lot, and relish our lively chats with the passionate winemakers. There is even a singalong on the bus (at least I think
there was; my memory is hazy) and we wind up back at the visitor centre feeling flushed and happy from a wonderful day in the vines. Any leftover wine vouchers can be used on the Sunday and, after our barbecue breakfast with the winemakers, we find ourselves at another iconic winery. Whiskey Gully is set in historic Beverley Homestead overlooking the Severn Valley where owner John Arlidge – a larger than life character – performs for dinner guests on his impressive collection of guitars. After that, there is time for a quick lunch at Jamworks Gourmet Foods, a top spot to experience a locally-grown produce menu and jam tastings, and we depart with gluten-free pasta, tomato relish and, of course, jams. Driving home we are already plotting our return to Queensland’s own wine country, where a weekend is simply not long enough. We’ve barely scratched the surface.

f Lachlan and Tanya Nielsen had fully understood the magnitude of the task to transform this 19th century worker’s cottage in East Brisbane, they might never have taken up the challenge. “When we bought it in 2010 it had been dilapidated for about 35 years,” Lachlan says. “There was no bathroom or kitchen, there was no ceiling or lights for that matter. We look back now and think, what were we thinking?”
Lachlan, an architect and builder, was more than equipped for the challenge to design and construct the alterations and additions. He managed the project alongside big life changes – the start of his young family plus the beginnings of his architectural practice, Nielsen Jenkins, with fellow architect Morgan Jenkins. “It took us 18 months to make the cottage habitable,” Lachlan says. “We had to excavate underneath, upstairs we had to replace windows, put in a ceiling, sort out plumbing and power. Once the bathroom, kitchen and one bedroom were done we moved in.” In the early days, the house was a home and studio with Nielsen Jenkins operating
from a wardrobe-sized room. When Lachlan and Tanya’s first child, Saxon, arrived that space became a nursery and the studio was relocated. Needless to say, the house has adapted to multiple living and working scenarios which is a credit to the design and its built-in flexibility. Now that second daughter, Beatrix, is also part of the dynamic, the house has settled into its role as a delightful twostorey family home that bridges the divide between historic cottage and contemporary extension. “It’s designed so that you circulate around the house in a continuous loop,” Lachlan says. “You either enter into the old V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

The ground floor is where day-to-day life effortlessly spills on to the back patio and garden and where robust finishes, such as concrete floors, invite play. “The girls can ride around the kitchen, laundry, behind the store and into living and dining areas in a continuous motion,” Lachlan says. “We really wanted the space V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
to allow this.” Nature is encouraged to move freely inside too. “The magpies come in occasionally, they don’t recognise the threshold either!” Lachlan says. It’s an easy space for family life to play out and it’s well suited to Brisbane’s subtropical climate. In summer the ground floor makes a welcome retreat from heat and humidity. “You feel hidden and protected in here,” Lachlan says. “And it feels like it’s airconditioned because it’s sunken and the breezes draw through it.” A sense of cool is strengthened by dark timber ceilings and views to greenery. Natural light is carefully balanced,
tempered by the translucent eastern wall and a light well which draws sunlight to the ground floor from above. “The whole eastern side is made of polycarbonate (wall sheeting),” Lachlan says. “We wanted to capture the eastern light but we also needed privacy from our neighbours whose kitchen and dining room is a metre away. The translucent facade does that.” Jade coloured tiles bring a subtle wash of colour to natural materials like timber and stone. Clay masonry is also woven into the mix, with blond bricks forming a series of “plinths” supporting kitchen and laundry benches and abundant pot plants. “Tanya and I were quite clear in making
the kitchen bench not an island but incorporating the oven as a bit of a screen so you’re not completely on display,” Lachlan says. “In a space that is otherwise open plan there are deliberately lots of little twists and turns.” Lachlan and Tanya’s worker’s cottage is one of the “Residential Marvels” featured in the Brisbane Open House program. You can visit the house on Saturday, October 12, 9am-4pm. Trend towards outdoor gourmet kitchens Funky yet functional outdoor areas with sleek kitchens and modern appliances are being embraced by gourmet food lovers wanting to fuse their love of the fresh air with fine cuisine. Winning Appliances category manager Russell Crosdale says homeowners are increasingly looking at ways they can use their existing living and entertainment areas so they can be used year-round. “We are seeing outdoor living spaces evolving to include eye-catching aesthetic designs and high-quality functionality,” he says. “This includes the ability to expand your culinary horizons by creating a combined outdoor kitchen and entertaining area.” Russell says it’s easy to achieve gourmet cooking results outside with a high-quality and functional barbecue that offers a variety of cooking options such as multiple burners, grilling plates, warming racks, a rotisserie, smokers and an additional side or wok burner. “The addition of a pizza oven will allow for slow-cooked and tender meats, homemade bread and even desserts,” he says. “This ensures your culinary creations are not limited to the indoors.”
Setting up a beverage area is also a must for those wanting to entertain outdoors without having to go inside. Adding wine cabinets, beverage centres and coffee machines offer this versatility and convenience. “A Zip HydroTap with boiling and chilled water options also eliminates the need to go inside when serving beverages,” he says. “An outdoor kitchen should also provide the convenience of cleaning up, as such, a sink and pullout tap will enable you to wash and hose down surfaces quickly and efficiently.” Finally, to extend the functionality of their outdoor areas beyond the warmer months and to provide ambience, Russell recommends homeowners install outdoor heating.

The hot, dry conditions that are on the way are the perfect recipe for bushfires and gutters that are full of leaves and debris are a fire hazard. Owner Sherrie Blundell says Leaf Shield Gutter Protection’s gutter guards prevents this build-up of leaves and other blockages, and also stops embers from getting underneath the roof giving people peace of mind throughout the fire season. “The Leafshield system will keep gutters clear all year round and will custom fit to any home,” she says. “Our range of aluminium and stainless gutter meshes are Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rated. “While preventing a build-up of leaves, the Leafshield system helps keep vermin and other pests out of gutters.”

Order before the Christmas rush Sales administrator at Cosmopolitan Shutters, Belinda Wolfe says now’s the time to order window shutters. “We are in our busy season and prices have never been more affordable than they are right now,” she says. Belinda says shutters are the ultimate window covering. “They can be used inside and outside the home to offer privacy, light control, and to block out the summer heat as well as being energy-efficient,” she says. “Whether you are building a new home or replacing existing window coverings, there isn’t a window treatment that looks better, lasts longer and insulates more efficiently than our internal Thermoshield shutters.”
The shutters from Cosmopolitan Shutters come in a range of colours and carry a lifetime warranty. Made from a 100 per cent poly-resin material that looks and feels like wood, Belinda says the products from Cosmopolitan Shutters never need painting and will not fade, crack, peel or chip. “For outside areas, we recommend our Louvreshield range of aluminium shutters; they are hard-wearing, easy to clean and can be custom-made,” Belinda says. 2/908 KINGSFORD SMITH DR, EAGLE FARM PH: 3268 5699 35/38 KENDOR ST, ARUNDEL PH: 5563 7440 1/10 PREMIER CCT, WARANA PH: 5493 8900 COSMOPOLITANSHUTTERS.COM.AU

LAST WORD
Phil Brown Rugby is a wonderful game as long as I don’t have to play it. I’m a card-carrying coward so contact sports have never appealed to me I’ve been enjoying the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. I’d be enjoying it even more if I was in Japan but never mind. Rugby is a wonderful game as long as I don’t have to play it. I’m a card-carrying coward so contact sports have never appealed to me, even though my father wanted me to play rugby. He played for the Hong Kong Football Club back in the 1940s and I still have his rugby album and press clippings, which now resemble the Dead Sea Scrolls. I have a wonderful dinner menu from the Hong Kong Football Club annual rugby dinner at The Peninsula Hotel in 1949. There was turtle soup on the menu. You wouldn’t get that now, would you?
My father had cauliflower ears and a wonky knee from his rugby days. When I went up from Kowloon Junior School to King George V School in Hong Kong as a boy I tried out for rugby in my first year but decided it wasn’t for me. Cricket and soccer were my games. I think my father was disappointed but I was glad that I had dodged a bullet. When we moved back to Australia two years later and I was enrolled at Miami State High School I eschewed all team sports and became a surfie. Being a surfie in the 1970s was an act of rebellion and the whole surfing scene ethos was antiestablishment and anti-authoritarian. I sometimes lament that because
I believe that team sports are important and character building. We followed my son’s club and school cricket career for seven years with great enthusiasm and it was character building. For me. And for the other poor parents who had to put up with me. I hope it was for my son too. But my high school years were spent shirking team sports and nicking off down to the surf most days although I did get roped in to playing rugby league in senior. Miami State High School was a league school and the headmaster, Bill Callinan, was mad for it. So I was forced to play. With my build (my old man reckoned I was built like “a racing tadpole”) I was on the wing for my one inglorious game.
I was very nervous about this and hoped that nobody would pass the ball to me but the buggers did, constantly. And they kept on passing it. It was a kind of selection match and we were divided into two teams to play each other to see who was any good. My mates on the opposing side delighted in hammering me in tackles. On one occasion, though, I broke free and I wondered why no one was chasing me. I was actually running outside the border of the field due to my short-sightedness. I just remember looking up to see everyone laughing and the headmaster was standing there just shaking his head. And so my rugby league career came to an abrupt end. Thank God.

Panorama over the city impresses It was the views that really clinched the deal for Peter Marles when he first looked at this beautiful Paddington property in 2005. The hilltop home, which was built between 1939 and 1941 in the English revival style, has panoramic city and suburban views, which can be enjoyed from many areas of the house, including the main bedroom. Designed by renowned architect of the time, Eric P Trewern, the three-level home still retains many of the Art Deco features he included. After living in the home for a couple of years, Peter renovated it to suit a more modern lifestyle. “We have done a significant amount of work since then to make it much more contemporary,” he says. “There was minimal garage space, we improved that. “The house was really a series of smaller rooms, so we took all the walls out and
suspended the roof, so it is all open-plan now. “We added a family room on the back and two decks and a new swimming pool. We retained all the chandeliers and all the Art Deco ceilings and things.” Peter says one of his favourite parts of the house is the back deck, which has 270degree views as far as Moreton Bay. “That is how high up the house is and there is always a beautiful breeze up there,” he says.

Bi-fold doors lead from the open-plan design and onto a partly-covered deck overlooking an inground pool. The sleeping accommodation is on the upper level with the main bedroom featuring a walk-through wardrobe and an ensuite. Other features in the property include airconditioning and ceiling fans. Place Kangaroo Point marketing agent Taylor Kleinberg said the property was the essence of stylish design. “This immaculate townhome offers luxury appointments, sleek modern lines and an undeniably fabulous river precinct location,” he said.
“Awash with high-end finishes and details throughout, luxury is reinforced with timeless raw materials. “Filled with an abundance of natural light, the open-plan living and dining arrangement is perfectly positioned to provide seamless transition from interior to exterior, with glass bi-fold doors inviting sleek alfresco dining on a moment’s notice. “Bordered by landscaped surrounds, the in-ground pool offers impressive respite on hot summer days and nights.”

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Often, your best ideas remain dormant in your imagination. Not so now. The cosmos offers you blue skies and boundless horizons. Some days this week, it all looks so good that you’re ready to promise almost anything to make the most of the moment. Just use your common sense. If already attached, love will feel passionate and very right.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) Deciding whether or not to give someone another shot is a challenge this week. Expect some uneven bursts of emotion, as you initially succeed in going with the flow, only to perhaps have a reality check dash your hopes. You might also get mixed signals and wonder whether or not you’re making a mistake. For now, it could be hard to tell.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21) Though you’d prefer to shift into neutral, the cosmos asks that you continue in fast gear. You’ve been doing it tough for some time. Illness, work pressures, family matters – too many demands have drained that wondrous spirit. Thankfully, better moments lie ahead. Late in the week will offer financial opportunities, new love or renewed sentimental ties.
