COUPLES‘ RETREAT

The ultimate his and hers holiday

Introducing the UltraGrow Collection of Crafted Potting Mixes, Garden Soils, Composts and Fertilisers “We’re following the science of plant & soil nutrition.” Terry O’Shea, Owner.

We craft these boutique products ourselves with you the gardener, landscaper, architect and nursery in mind as we bring a new ethical approach to media production. NUTRIENT RICH & PRE-LOADED WITH THE GOOD STUFF

At last, soils and potting mixes that actually perform like it says on the bag. Everyone sells a mass produced premium soil or potting mix, but most are premium simply in name and price not performance. Sure, they hold your plants upright and they don’t die, but does that meet your expectations and the true growth potential of your expensive plants? So now you have the carefully crafted UltraGrow Collection that really works. We’re not just saying that, as results speak for themselves. Each soil or potting mix in the collection comes pre-loaded with nutrients to give your garden the best possible start with long lasting nutrients they need.

WASTE FREE WITH NO STINKING NASTIES

Now featuring a complete range of lawn, garden and controlled release fertilisers

Commercially made waste-based soils and potting mixes contain all sorts of ‘things’, some good and some nasty. Even very nasty! Every ingredient included in the UltraGrow Collection has been carefully selected, tested and is completely clean and free of nasties. No stinking waste, none! Our top soils are just that, truly natural soils from the top of the earth out of the Lockyer Valley while our composts and potting mixes are made using clean water with organics that are fully processed over 24-weeks to create the ultimate composted humus. They’re gluten free, lactose free, paraben free, BPA free… Not really, but they’re definitely liquid and green waste free while full of nutrients your plants crave!

LONG LASTING OOMPH!

It’s not about how much oomph you’ve got but how long you’ve got it, right? The UltraGrow Collection will provide you all the oomph your plants need for between 3 and 16-months. They are rife with microorganism working around the clock which directly contribute to the biological fertility of UltraGrow products. Sound complicated? Your soil is alive, ALIVE! Which means like a fine wine, your soil will be constantly improving with age, feeding your plants and producing results you never realised was possible.

This week... Motivation is key when it comes to exercise. In my experience, working up the energy to get trainers on my feet is the biggest hurdle. Once that’s done, clipping a leash on the dog and walking her around the block is easy. But having read this week’s feature (P8), it occurs to me that Stella, my portly dachshund, might not be the ideal training partner. Maybe I need a walking buddy of the human variety to hasten my steps. Writer Sophie Wright chats to healthconscious locals – sisters, a married couple and work colleagues – who attest that training together not only keeps them fitter, but more in tune with one another. So there’s more motivation, right there, but if you are the sort who needs a deadline, pencil in The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane on Aug 25. Registrations are open now at bridgetobrisbane.com.au

THE CHAT

Different strokes Former cricketer Nathan Reardon has teamed up with his wife Liz to offer tailor-made luxury retreats for couples Emma Schafer With fishing and golf for him, yoga and wine for her – and a former MasterChef finalist manning the kitchen – Nathan and Liz Reardon have tailor-made the ultimate couples’ retreat. The pair dreamt up the travel concept on their 2017 honeymoon in Vietnam where Liz, a nurse, had her eye on a poolside cabana and Nathan, a former Australian and Queensland cricketer, was itching to perfect his putt. “I love holidaying with my wife, it’s an amazing way to connect, but the way we want to spend our holiday looks very different,” says Nathan, 34, who lives at Manly on Brisbane’s bayside with Liz, 30 and their son Harrison, 1. He retired from cricket in 2017 and now owns fishing charter company Outside Edge Adventures. “I was hearing all the time from the guys I take fishing that they had the same holidaying issue as we did,” Nathan says. And so he decided to expand his offering. In October last year, Outside Edge Adventures’ first luxury retreat came to life when four couples joined the Reardons on the picturesque Coromandel Peninsula on New Zealand’s North Island. Nathan partnered with some of the best in the business to host the trip, including Brisbane’s Ben Borsht, who was runner-up in MasterChef Australia 2018. Mana Yoga Retreats owner Patty Perlman led the women in yoga, meditation and guided hikes while Nathan took their

other halves for three days of adventure fishing. “After a day doing what each half loved, we would all meet back at the stunning luxury bungalow in the small village of Whitianga, and enjoyed chef-quality dinners with kingfish sashimi, scallops and whole-baked snapper,” Nathan says. “It’s unsurprising this was the highlight.” What was surprising though, was the men’s eagerness to get home for some yoga and stretching with their wives after a day on the water. “And there is absolutely scope for that,” Nathan stresses. “If the ladies want to come fishing or the guys want to head off to a winery there is nothing stopping them.” Owing to the success of the first sold-out retreat, Outside Edge Adventures is headed back to New Zealand for back-to-back retreats at the end of the year. Prices start from $5450 per couple including airport transfers, a private room in a luxury home with 180-degree ocean views, chef-cooked meals, locally sourced beer and wine and all planned activities. The first package, Nov 6-10, is almost sold out but there are still places on the Nov 12-16 stay. “The four-day holiday will see the men experience some amazing fishing or golf, while the women relax with yoga, hiking, beach activities and visits to local wineries,” Nathan says. And Ben will be in the kitchen again. outsideedgeadventures.com.au

itness and relationships, romantic or otherwise, need not be mutually exclusive. In today’s fast-paced world, many of us struggle to successfully juggle the demands of daily life, so why not combine the two? A growing body of evidence suggests working out with a partner motivates us to exercise regularly. A landmark 2015 study from the University of Zurich revealed people with a “gym buddy” exercised more frequently than those who didn’t, thus improving overall fitness. Anytime Fitness expert Jaymee Smith agrees having a training partner motivates us in different ways, but the most common is accountability. “Having someone else there to remind you why you started, and the reason you’re wanting to go, makes you stay on track,” she says. Jaymee, 25, has seen how a training partner can bring more gains than just muscle – some of her clients have transformed their lives by working out together. “I have two clients who are best friends and when they first came to the gym three years ago, they had not set foot inside a weights room. Now, they’re confident to lift weights and do classes every week, because they know the other one will be there,” Jaymee says. “I also train three girls who work together, and by committing to training together over the last eight months, they’ve been able to motivate each other and hold each other accountable. One of the girls has lost just shy of 10kg.” Jaymee says the ideal training partner is supportive, understands your goals and knows what motivates you. So who better than your significant other? Amina Khan and Mohammad Rahman, a married couple based in Brisbane city, run together twice a week. Amina, 26, says the runs provide healthy competition. “Mohammad is much taller than me and his stride length is much longer, so I have to push myself to keep up with him … it’s a great motivation!” she says. “On the other hand, Mohammad finds working out together motivating because it helps him stay consistent.” Amina, a PhD student, and Mohammad, a medical student, 27, will celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary on August 25 – the same day as The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane annual fun run. “This will be the third time we’ve done the Bridge to Brisbane. Each year we see it as a new opportunity to challenge ourselves and achieve a new personal best,” Amina says. The couple has adopted the muchloved event as their anniversary tradition. “We laugh because sure, we could go out for a fancy meal, but instead, we go for a run together,” Amina says. Originally from Canada, Amina and

Mohammad moved to Brisbane four years ago to pursue postgraduate studies. They say exercising together has strengthened their bond and helped them in tough times. “Moving was a great thing for our relationship, but it was a big adjustment, as all our family is in Canada,” Amina says. “Working out together helped us get through the stress of the move, and has been so good for our teamwork and cooperation. Some of our longer runs and multi-day hikes have created memories we really cherish. It’s our favourite thing.” But it’s not just those in romantic relationships who benefit from joint sweat sessions. Sisters Nicola and Sarah Scruby say exercise has brought them closer together. “Training together has strengthened our relationship because we

see each other so often and know exactly what’s going on in each other’s lives,” says Nicola, 28. As a nutrition student and wellness entrepreneur, she is no stranger to the benefits of exercise. Nicola operates The Unrefined (@the__unrefined), a wellness platform with more than 67,000 followers on Instagram, and F.ACNE (@f.acne), an educational program and online community. Nicola and Sarah, 33, who is senior development manager at Racing Queensland, began training together last year to establish a regime and keep each other on track. They attend gym classes two-three days a week and fortnightly personal training sessions. “We also see each other more often than we ever have outside of training. We

go to the markets together on Saturday after training, have dinner at least twice per fortnight and go for coffee or a smoothie with our dogs.” Nicola says everyone needs a workout buddy – “whether it’s a gym buddy, family member or friend”. Matt Lancashire, 38, and Haesley Cush, 41, real estate professionals from New Farm, are workout buddies, best mates and business partners. They are co-principals of Ray White New Farm, Ray White Spring Hill, and Living Here Cush Partners, and exercise together most days. “We do met-con (metabolic conditioning) on a Monday and Tuesday, our team training session on a Thursday, and we’ve also started doing yoga together on a Friday,” Matt says. “We sometimes go for a run on the weekend too.” After briefly pursuing separate business ventures, their shared passion for fitness helped lead them back into partnership in 2017. “When we decided to go back into partnership, we did a lot of due diligence, even though we’d been friends for over 30 years,” says Matt. “Our goal in business was for us to lead happy lives, and one of the passions we share in our personal lives is fitness.” Working out together helps them manage stress and solve problems, Haesley adds. “In this fast-paced life we live, exercise allows you to detach from a stressful or complex situation,” he says. “We’ve found that catching up, doing a workout and having a coffee often helps us realise the problem we had is no longer as big as it was before.” BRISBANE NEWS July 17-23, 2019 09

hile some ideas start with a seed, it was a “grow your own mushroom” kit that did it for Amy Christensen and Mickey Pascoe, the Brisbane couple behind the inner-city mushroom farm Little Acre Gourmet Mushrooms. “When we discovered mushroom growing kits, we grew one on our kitchen bench successfully and thought well hey, here’s food you can grow in your house,” Amy says. The couple, who are engaged, then discovered that many mushroom species were only available from overseas imported sources – thus revealing a gap in the market. “It’s the perfect thing to farm in the city,” says Amy, who has a background in graphic design. “We thought we could provide a local source, meaning fresher, high-quality mushrooms because they didn’t have to travel thousands of kilometres before 10 BRISBANE NEWS July 17-23, 2019

making it to your plate. And it all grew from there,” Amy said. Amy, 27, and Mickey, 30, who previously worked in marine science, trialled the concept in late 2017 and began delivering mushrooms from their “farm” where they live in West End in April last year. The mushrooms are grown inside shipping containers on organic waste such as sugar cane mulch and hardwood sawdust. “Growing indoors gives you the advantage of being able to control the climate and growing conditions, something that is and will continue to be a real challenge for food production in the future,” she says. They now supply more than 20 restaurants and cafes in Brisbane including Arc Dining, Donna Chang, Blackbird Bar & Grill, Wild Canary, La Lune Wine Co, and Newstead Brewing Co. The Little Acre Gourmet Mushrooms’ core range includes pink oysters, golden

oysters, white oysters, king browns, shiitake, lion’s mane and cinnamon caps. But it’s not only about growing and supplying mushrooms; the couple also focuses on education as the unique food often divides opinion. “Most people in Australia have grown up with only one mushroom to experience – the common button or field mushroom,” Amy says. “Believe it or not, button, field, swiss brown, portobello – these are all the same species of mushroom just picked at different stages or grown in different conditions to alter their appearance and intensity of flavour. “The mushroom species we grow are tree mushrooms; they are all different species and they each have their own flavour and texture. They don’t taste earthy or dirty because they aren’t grown in compost, they grow on clean hardwood. “Some taste sweet, nutty, savoury, meaty, they are all different, so our advice would be don’t be afraid – give them a go and you might just find the perfect mushroom for you.” And her favourite? Well, that would be the king brown. “They are the tastiest and really versatile. My favourite way to eat them is in Mickey’s creamy mushroom pasta, a staple dinner in our house,” she says. Mickey, on the other hand, goes for the gold oysters because of their amazing bright yellow colour and nutty, cashew-like taste. Little Acre Mushrooms’ masterclasses ($155, from Sep) teach easy, low-tech methods of growing mushrooms at home. LIFE

Brooke Falvey At first sniffle, I blamed my runny nose on the cold morning air, but within hours I became more congested than Coronation Drive at 8am Winter. It’s such a glorious time of year. Yes, the days seem shorter, but it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up in cosy knits, carb-load with pasta, and be housebound for an entire week with germs after a stranger in a shopping centre sneezes in your face as they walk past. At first sniffle, I blamed my runny nose on the cold morning air, but within hours I became more congested than Coronation Drive at 8am. Not one to spread my germs around, I spent the next four days on the couch surrounded by a sea of abandoned tissues, binge watching the remake of Dynasty. It would have been a glorious mini-

break had I been able to breathe through my nose, and not fallen asleep so often that I constantly had to rewind through entire episodes because I’d missed key plot lines. Don’t get me wrong. I really love sleep and napping is up there as one of my favourite pastimes, but there’s a time and a place for it. As a 19-year-old, I learnt the hard way that a quick “disco nap” in the bathroom at City Rowers is neither the time nor place, but that’s a story for another day. Back to last week: after napping multiple times a day for four days, I finally looked and felt less germy, so I decided it was time to venture back into the world.

Given my low energy levels and tolerance for sneezing strangers, I decided the best thing to do was treat myself to a quiet, soothing massage. With dim lights, a warm room and soft ocean noises, it started off wonderfully well as the massage therapist worked to loosen the knots and tension in my head, neck and shoulders. I didn’t even care that she was messing up my freshly washed hair, because it was so relaxing. With my top half sorted, she popped a mask over my eyes and moved down to my legs and feet. I vaguely recall her touching my left foot and then … nothing.

That’s right, I fell asleep. Again. While this is considered a huge compliment to the therapist, all it did was raise several questions, starting with, “did I snore?” I mean, obviously I don’t snore, because women never do, but I have been known to make funny little noises that were once likened to that of a puppy. And also, did the therapist keep going with the rest of my massage, or did she see her chance, slowly back away and use the time to catch up on The Handmaid’s Tale? Sadly I’ll never know, but I can tell you this – it definitely goes down as my most expensive nap.

FOOD + DRINK

Wild on the vine

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS ... Maeve Wine pairs European flavours with great wines; the creme caramel (below). Pictures: Sarah Marshall/AAP

Start with the wine list and you can’t go wrong at this buzzing new spot RESTAURANT Tony Harper In her nearly 15 years my daughter has never tasted an oyster. She began as Australia’s fussiest eater (“Dad, I can’t eat this, it has green in it!” with a fleck of parsley in a mountain of pasta; a 50th of a rosemary frond on a slice of lamb) but has kind of mellowed. And now she asks for an oyster. It’s like she’s either been replaced by a robot, or age has inexplicably expanded her repertoire. We are at Maeve Wine – so talked about, so hard to get into, so sizzling before we even walk in the door – and Amelie is stepping outside her comfort zone. We get an oyster each and she loves it. Maeve gives us all of the add-ons – vinaigrette, caviar, Tabasco – and I load mine with a bit of everything; Amelie takes it neat. Both work, they are briny, fresh, juicy, good. We follow up with Ortiz anchovies – I’ve sensed a gap in her culinary defence and I’m going for broke. They come six to a plate ($16), laid like fallen soldiers in a big puddle of vinaigrette with pickled chillies on top, wafer-like croutons on an oldschool toast-rack to the side. It’s beerfriendly and not even close to winefriendly, yet its salty, acid-laden intensity is kind of wonderful. If there is a wine to drink with the anchovies, it would be found here (it’s the most wildly reeling wine list I’ve ever seen; Captain Jack Sparrow in print). But

MAEVE WINE 39 Melbourne St, South Brisbane Chef: Jesse Stevens Dinner daily Vegetarian options Eftpos and major credit cards Off-street paid parking SCORES OUT OF 10 Food: 7 Drinks: 9 Vibe: 8 Service: 8.5 anchovy catalyses a wine combination that will never work. Sorrenberg Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc (barrel fermented, sublime, $21 a glass under Coravin) goes to the side; it’s a stellar wine but even it cannot handle the acidic, salty assault. Even if it doesn’t marry completely with the menu, it’s a fascinating list. There’s a wine from the Canary Islands – grubby, quirky, but made brilliant by its weird origin; a few from Jura, France; Georgia; Hungary – some skinsy, some conventional. My Sorrenberg is followed

by a cracking glass of (slightly soft) Langhe Nebbiolo from Roche Costamagna ($18). I can’t quite follow the line of thought that has put the list together, but I love it. The wines are the best part of the Maeve triangle. Everything else – food included – is kind of Euro-bistro: bentwood chairs, waitstaff in black and white, bistro-bustle, slick service, clever. Duck lasagne ($27) promises to be the killer dish, but ends up being the least good – too much bechamel and not enough

solid. It’s more thick, white soup with bits than it is lasagne. But hanger steak with cafe de paris butter and fries is excellent, and a dessert of rum baba ($15) is wildly good. Better, Amelie reckons (go figure), than the anchovies. Maeve has caused a few ripples among the Brisbane wine and dine fraternity and I can see why: it’s a sideways take on your everyday Euro-bistro – service spot-on, wine list amazing, food a notch above good. It looks French but it isn’t really, yet it does its thing brilliantly. Wine first.

RECIPE

Hummus gets its name from the Arabic word for chickpea. So while I expect a bit of pushback with today’s recipe, I’m hardly blazing a trail; in the last while I’ve seen white bean, beetroot, pumpkin and avocado hummus on menus around town. In Australia, we are unfettered by the culinary dogma of the old world. We can call a spade a shovel and substitute root for pea without calls of culinary heresy. Shukran.

Take a dip The main criteria for hummus? That it be delicious, says Alastair McLeod

PARSNIP HUMMUS, CRISPY CHICKPEAS, PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients 4 large parsnips Rock salt 2 green shallots, trimmed ¼ bunch flat leaf parsley 125ml extra virgin olive oil + additional for drizzling 1 large lemon, juiced Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 3tbs tahini 1 clove garlic, peeled 100g cooked chickpeas, drained Smoked paprika Vegetable oil, for frying 1 red chilli, thinly sliced

Method Preheat oven to 180C. Set parsnips on a thick bed of rock salt and bake for 45 mins or until tender. Remove from oven and cool to room temperature. To make herb salsa, drizzle shallots and parsley with ½tbs of olive oil and grill until charred and wilted. Finely chop and combine with 2tbs of olive oil and juice of half the lemon, season and set aside. To prepare hummus, make a shallow incision along the length of the parsnip and carefully remove the skin in a large piece. Coarsely chop the flesh then blitz with tahini, garlic, remaining lemon juice and a further 2tbs of olive oil. Add sufficient water to make a light smooth hummus. Next preheat a heavy-based fry pan over medium-high heat. Add remaining oil then saute chickpeas until golden and crispy. Season and sprinkle generously with smoked paprika and toss again. Set aside. Preheat vegetable oil to 180C and fry parsnip skins until crisp and golden. Remove from oil, drain on a cake rack and season with salt. To present, spread hummus over a large platter, Spoon over herb salsa and scatter with chickpeas. Sprinkle with chilli, a generous pinch of smoked paprika and a final drizzle of olive oil. Serve with parsnip chips. Serves 6 Alastair McLeod is chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au Styling and photography: Miranda Porter Ceramics: twowarmhands.com

Sound of silence After making a noise with his last novel, Dominic Smith shifts his focus to the silent film era Fiona Purdon For Dominic Smith, it is history’s forgotten stories that pique his interest. In his 2016 bestseller The Last Painting of Sara de Vos, which sold more than 250,000 copies globally, Dominic explored the unsung female painters of the 17th century Dutch Golden era. Now he has turned his attention to the silent film era in his latest novel The Electric Hotel ($33, Allen & Unwin). “I’m interested in the gaps and silences of history,” Dominic says. “I saw a 2013 report from the United States Library of Congress, that of the 10,000 silent films made and released in America, about 75 per cent have disappeared. To have 7500 films disappear, that galvanised my interest.’’ Brisbane-born Dominic, who has spent the past 20 years living in the US, started researching the subject even before the release of The Last Painting of Sara de Vos. The Electric Hotel is mainly set at the beginning of the 20th century and focuses on an eclectic group of creatives, including photographer’s apprentice Claude Ballard, a concession agent for the French Lumiere brothers, the inventors of cinema. The story opens in 1962 when a now-85year-old Claude Ballard, living in a rundown Hollywood hotel, is tracked down by film scholar Martin Embry about a long-lost film he helped to make. The title comes from El Hotel Electrico, a silent trick film, which was made by Spanish director Segundo de Chomon. The 1908 film was lost for many years before it was

As a young man, Claude becomes part of “a filmmaking family’’ with producer and moneyman Hal Bender, whose father was murdered by loan sharks, colourful Australian stuntman Chip Spalding, and legendary French actress and sometimes lover Sabine Montrose. The quartet forms an early studio in Fort Lee, New Jersey, a precursor to Hollywood, before they are driven out by American inventor Thomas Edison, who threatened to sue many filmmakers “to gain a monopoly about how films are made and distributed’’. As part of his research, Dominic attended the world’s largest silent film festival in Pordenone, Northern Italy, in 2017.

“That is where I had my silent film conversion. We know the visual stereotype of the slapstick scenes and jittery movement but it turns out many of the silent films have not been shown at the correct frame rate.’’ He also visited the Lumieres’ childhood home, now a museum and “hallowed cinematic ground’’ in France, and watched 100 silent films at the Library of Congress archives in Washington. Even though Dominic has spent the past 20 years studying and working in the US, he still regularly returns to Australia where his mother and three sisters live. “I feel connected to Australia, I feel at home with the sights, the sounds and smells and the beaches, it’s something in my childhood and DNA,’’ says Dominic, who grew up in Sydney. Dominic says The Electric Hotel is

already attracting buzz as the follow-up novel to The Last Painting of Sara de Vos. “To have a bestseller makes a difference. For most of the last 15 years, as a writer, I’ve also had a day job. “Now I have more flexibility to focus on my own work. The fact Sara de Vos is my fourth book, not my first, when you do have a book which sells, it’s a beautiful thing, it’s a lightning strike, that you hope will happen again,’’ he says.

Life’s treasures Dealing with tragedy has helped sculptor Els Houwen rediscover her artistic mojo Emma Schafer Ceramic sculptor and antique dealer Els Houwen has spent her life collecting and creating treasures but when she knew she would lose the most precious of them all – her husband – she stopped. For the five years that Jozef Remaut, 71, fought prostate cancer Els, 64, happily put her art aside to instead draw the most out of their time together. “I was working on a large sculpture exhibition, but when he got sick I dropped it all,” says the Belgian national and owner of Woolloongabba antique store Eurantik. “It’s good to know where your priorities lie. We were best friends, married for 42 years, and he loved me to bits. “When you know you’re going to die you can live more generously, more loving and more happily. We did that.” Jozef died in July 2018 and Els gave herself a year to reflect and create. Now, a year after losing Jozef, she is ready to unveil the results of her year of introspection: sculptures created from antiques and clay at her Brookfield home. The “28 little treasures” speak of life, death and life after death, and so the exhibition was named Memento Mori – Latin for “remember you will die”. “But it’s joyful,” Els enthuses. “Every piece has at its core a bronze antique element as I wanted the tiny pieces to have real value at their core. It refers to our life together as antique dealers and the treasured objects we surrounded ourselves with.” The couple emigrated to Australia in 1982 with their young son and opened their antique shop originally in Fortitude Valley. It was filled with “little pieces of

LIFE FORCE ... Els Houwen with pieces from her Memento Mori exhibition. Picture: Russell Shakespeare (their) soul” from back home in Europe. Most of the bronze elements used in Els’ latest work are French antique oil lamp bases or candlesticks that date from 1860-1880. “Then I added my own creations, the white paper clay parts, and deliberately left them uncoloured as they refer to bone and death. (But) the artwork itself is not sad. They refer to all things ending. “Most pieces hold a candle (signifying)

they will bring light in the face of death.” Els says creating the fragile sculptures helped her rediscover her zest for life. “It was my way of dealing with the death, sitting for hours to see what it all means, creating in a way I have never done before,” she says. “This exhibition is about getting myself back. It’s about going on, and seeing if there’s a way to do that.” The show will come to life nightly, later this month, at Eurantik.

“It’s going to be so romantic, surrounded by candles and antiques. I wanted it to be a little bit ethereal and have an extra layer of magic.” And Els says she will return to a large-scale project she was working on before her life changed course. “I want that energy back,” she says. An epic landing A stunning documentary takes viewers behind one of humanity’s amazing achievements APOLLO 11 (G) hhhkj Director Todd Douglas Miller Starring Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin No matter how many times you watch the 1969 moon landing, it’s still hard to believe those plucky astronauts are going to make it back in one piece. Indeed, there are a few key moments when you are sure they will not. Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary, Apollo 11 amplifies that tension with never-beforeseen footage from the time. The documentary doesn’t put you in V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Neil Armstrong’s seat, or indeed his head. Instead, it conveys the immensity of the challenge and the extraordinary manpower involved. Make no mistake about it – this was a team effort. Director Todd Douglas Miller, who sifted through 11,000 hours of audio recordings and a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, winds back the clock to the three hours immediately before launch. Judiciously edited footage of the astronauts as they suit up distinguishes between Armstrong’s focused, tightlywound demeanour and Buzz Aldrin’s loosey-goosey ease with the cameras.

As the countdown begins, every possible public vantage point is occupied by men in polyester shirts, women with backcombed hair, their families and associated muscle cars. In a last-minute drama that underscores the risks, technicians race against the clock to circumvent a hydrogen leak. Not even a steady diet of visual effectsdriven Hollywood blockbusters can dampen the effect of the up-close blast that coincides with the shuttle’s lift-off. And that’s before things really get cracking. VICKY ROACH BRISBANE NEWS July 17-23, 2019 15

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS: ADVERTISING FEATURE

Early detection is the best protection Those who are over 40 should have an oral cancer screening every year – especially if they smoke, says Dr Malcolm Duff, principal dentist at Face Value Dental. “Our dentists include an oral cancer screening as part of a regular check-up, and screening only takes a few minutes,” he says. “A screening involves us using the Velscope Vx Handpiece, so we can examine all parts of your mouth to look for possible abnormalities. “This handheld scope emits a safe blue light that can make unhealthy tissue more visible than other screening methods. “This technology is recognised by the World Health Organisation for helping in the early detection of oral cancer.” He says if the dentist does find any unhealthy tissue, they may refer the patient to another health professional who can perform a biopsy to determine if any cancer cells are present. Model behaviour Rosie Luik hopes to inspire other women as Indooroopilly Shopping Centre’s new fashion ambassador

F

lying the flag for fashionable mums everywhere, Rosie Luik is thrilled to be the new face of Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. A Brisbane girl through and through, she’s taking the ambassador role very seriously, and hopes to inspire other women to feel good about themselves when they go shopping for a new outfit. “Both myself and the centre share the same vision in empowering women to feel beautiful in their own skin,” she says. The 34-year-old, who is mum to Ava, 13, Aston, 11, Coco, 10, and Elvie, 7, is a relative newcomer to modelling, having started three years ago. The move followed her making headlines in 2011 when she gave birth to surrogate twins for her best friend in what was the first altruistic surrogacy in Queensland. But her modelling career didn’t take flight until she started her Instagram profile @rosie_luik, which now has a following of 189,000. Before she knew it she was shooting for fashion brands and making commercials. Rosie, who starts her day with a can of Red Bull, believes “thinking positively each and every day” is the key to looking good. “I don’t feel beautiful all the time,” she says. “But I think my role as a mum has really defined me and made me a confident person. Being active is also great for my mental wellbeing and positivity. “Doing stuff that you enjoy makes staying active enjoyable instead of a chore. I love activities that are intense and don’t take up a lot of time like boxing, HIIT and pilates. I also support my body by making better choices with the food we buy.” She also makes sure she indulges in a trip to the hair salon every couple of months, and enjoys a facial every six weeks. “It’s important for work to keep my hair in good condition and I love finding new products that really work.” When it comes to choosing clothes, Rosie advocates comfort as well as style. She enjoys browsing the racks at Seed, SHEIKE, Decjuba, Target and Kmart, with firefighter husband Adrian and the kids in tow. Since her fashion shoot with Brisbane News stylist Annabel Falco, Rosie has her eye on new pieces for spring. “I’ve discovered olive green is a good colour for me, so I’m thinking I need to add this to my wardrobe.” HANNAH DAVIES 18 BRISBANE NEWS July 17-23, 2019

Van for all seasons Since finding fame on TV’s The Block, Carlene and Michael Duffy have turned their attention to revamping caravans Tonya Turner

C

arlene and Michael Duffy have been campers since way back. For years they took their children Paddy, 10 and Stella, eight, on holidays where they’d set up their tent or camper trailer and settle into life in the great outdoors. After one particularly tough trip, however, where they found themselves packing up in the pouring rain, they decided to trade their gear in for the comfort of a caravan. Staying dry wasn’t the only benefit to the upgrade. “We were so busy, and the packing and setting up and packing down and unpacking when we got home had become a real burden and took a shine off the camping trip,” Carlene says.

With the cost of a new caravan way out of their budget, they decided to find a vintage caravan and put their renovating skills to use. Best known for their appearance on The Block Glasshouse in 2014 when they only made a $10,000 profit on their apartment renovation, Carlene and Michael were at least able to start their own design business, Cedar and Suede, after the reality-TV show. Since then, they’ve renovated their dream home at Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast, worked on a long list of client projects and hosted TV shows Ready, Set, Reno and Open Homes Australia. They’ve also renovated four vintage caravans

We haven’t been to a caravan park where three or four people haven’t come up to us and said ‘we love this van’ including the one they’ve kept for holidays, Dolly. It’s their home away from home and was named in honour of the 14-year-old Queensland schoolgirl, Dolly Everett, who

tragically took her own life last year after being bullied. The family caravan is a reminder to them to hold close what they cherish most – their children. “Our generation is the first to have to navigate their access to technology and social media – it’s terrifying,” Carlene says. After buying their first caravan for $5000, a 1966 Millard Florida named Millie, and selling it for a tidy profit, the couple fell in love with the retro charm of a 1960s Viscount they named Vonnie. Dolly, a bigger 1970s Viscount with two entry doors, came next. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

LIVING Carlene’s top tips for renovating a caravan 1. Make sure the chassis is in good condition 2. Don’t underestimate the time it takes and the cost involved to renovate 3. If you’re not super handy, buy a vintage caravan in really good nick so it’s mainly just about the painting 4. Choose light materials to keep the weight down 5. Opt for tonal colour schemes to create a calm, cohesive space

PLAYING THE BLUES ... The soothing colour palette gives the caravan’s interior a laidback feel. For more info on Michael and Carlene’s vintage caravan workshops, go to renohomeshow.com.au Design: Cedar and Suede, cedarandsuede.com.au Photography: Cait Miers

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “We weren’t going to buy a van that aesthetically we weren’t happy with, because how you feel in a space to me is everything. We just love the shape,” Carlene says. The tonal palette of blues and whites creates a calm coastal feel in the cute-aspie family caravan. There are bunk beds for the kids at one

end, an upholstered bench seat that wraps around the original table in the middle, a neat and tidy kitchenette and Carlene and Michael’s bed at the other end. Brass accents were used to add a touch of sophistication throughout the cosy and inviting space. “I love how brass ages – you get that really nice finish and it tends to blend in a bit more than chrome,” Carlene says. Materials had to be carefully selected to

keep the weight of the caravan down. Stick-on tiles were used on the splashback, new laminate on the tabletop, lightweight ply on the benchtops and mesh on the kitchen cupboards. Michael says the van attracts a lot of attention. “We haven’t been to a caravan park where three or four people haven’t come up to us and said ‘we love this van,’ or ‘we had one when we were a kid’. I think it

sparks nostalgia in people and when we’re driving we get people with $100,000 vans turning their heads,” Michael says. While they plan to hold on to Dolly for a while yet, they have two more caravans sitting on their property waiting to be restored. Michael has plans to cut the side off one of them and experiment with opening it up to create more indoor/ outdoor living for their holidays. The couple will be running caravan renovation workshops and bringing Dolly to the Reno Home Show at the Brisbane Showgrounds on July 20-21. “It’s a really niche workshop for people renovating a caravan. It will be about how to replace windows, design, colour schemes, layouts, painting tips and what to look for in terms of purchasing,” Carlene says.

LAST WORD

Phil Brown I can also sing pretty well the whole theme song to Mister Ed, that program about a talking horse ... It’s all there in the windmills of my mind I was sitting in the Lyric Theatre at QPAC watching the Bolshoi Ballet and letting the music wash over me. It was the ballet Spartacus, which I first saw in Moscow earlier in the year when I was sent there on assignment. Tough gig, right? I wasn’t really familiar with the ballet but in Moscow, and then back in Brisbane, I had these deja vu moments listening to the music of Aram Khachaturian. It’s beautiful but why was it so familiar? I tried to remember until a few days later, in passing, someone said to me that he thought it was used in a television series he had watched in his childhood, The Onedin Line. It was a terrific series charting the lives

of a Liverpool shipping family and the theme music was the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from the ballet … beautiful, romantic music that makes your spirit soar. And there it was embedded in my memory and in the memory of the gentleman who had reminded me how I knew it. It made me reflect how my head is full of TV music and theme songs. For example the other evening on my way to the bath I started, for some unknown reason, to sing this. “Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed,” I sang … “A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, Then one day he was shootin’ at some food, And up through the

ground came a bubblin' crude. Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.” That is of course the theme song to The Beverly Hillbillies. It’s called The Ballad of Jed Clampett and it still sits in the recess of my brain fully intact. I used to love that show, one of the funniest ever made. I can also sing pretty well the whole theme song to Mister Ed, that program about a talking horse. “A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can talk to a horse of course.” Unless the horse is Mister Ed. These theme songs and theme music form part of the soundtrack of my life. The marching music theme of Hogan’s Heroes

is another song that has sentimental connections although I can’t watch the show any more. Not since I found out what a sad, unsavoury fellow the star, Bob Crane, turned out to be. I won’t elaborate but you can look that up. That M*A*S*H music is also memorable and if I reach right back I can recall and sing the opening song to The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It’s all there in the windmills of my mind. I’m sure many of you will have a head full of television theme songs, too. And as I write another one has just popped up. See if you can guess what it is. Time to get a taste of the

high life Modern hilltop home in sought-after Balmoral for sale He may be nearly 80 but fruiterer Jim Panos isn’t quite ready to retire completely. So he and his wife Betty are selling the house they bought in 2013 – a modern hilltop home in sought-after Balmoral. The Panos family have owned and run fruit and veggie shops, including one at Ashgrove. Jim says his children now run the Ashgrove shop but working is “in my blood”. He says they bought the Balmoral

house because it was a “lovely solid house in a good position”. The lower level has a large main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, a family room, living room, and an open-plan kitchen and dining room. There is also a laundry. Upstairs is another main bedroom with its own private sitting area, walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, plus a smaller bedroom. Also on this floor is another open-plan living, dining and sitting area, a family bathroom and a second kitchen. The kitchen has stone benchtops and European appliances, and the living spaces open on to a large balcony.

Making the most of the spectacular views, the upper level also features wall-towall glass windows and doors, while the honey-coloured timber flooring adds warmth to the interior. The house sits on an elevated 635sq m block with views to the Gateway Bridge, Brisbane River and across to Hamilton Hill. They plan to use the proceeds to build a new house on their acreage block at Chandler, and yes, there will be a fruit and veggie patch. “We bought it for our daughter to live in but she has bought a house so the time is right,” Jim says.

Opulent apartment Former BRW rich-lister James Rice and his wife Elise are selling their spectacular skyhome in the Brisbane CBD. Designed by award-winning architect Justin O’Neill, the sprawling 670sq m luxury apartment spans two levels. “As soon as we exited the lift, within 5m of walking into the apartment, we knew we wanted it,” Elise says. “The views, the design, the finishes and the quality were just spectacular.” The opulent apartment at New Farm has some of the best views in Brisbane, and a 670sq m interior that is packed with modern inclusions. The extravagance begins as soon as you exit the private lift, which opens out on to a floor plan that includes walls of glass and Travertine stone floors. The main bedroom has an oversized walk-in wardrobe with sensor lighting, a built-in entertainment unit and a largerthan-life ensuite with spectacular views that can be enjoyed from the circular stone bath. Also on the first floor is a second living room, an ideal media room, the kitchen, dining and main living area, all of which

opens on to an outdoor area, and a bar and wine cellar. Other notable features of the stunning apartment include a powder room on the first level, a dedicated laundry on the second level and a secure garage with space for up to six vehicles. “The six-car garage is also very rare in an apartment complex,” Elise says. “We also enjoyed being in such a boutique apartment building with only 11 apartments.”
