THE CHAT

Carnival queen Mishel Finlayson sashayed her way to Rio’s famed festival seven times before she realised her heart’s desire Hannah Davies

I

t’s hard to believe Mishel Finlayson almost hung up her dancing shoes. Told she would never make the big league by a former instructor and feeling as though she was too old to get to the top, the 37year-old was ready to give up on her dream. But a chance meeting with Brazilian actor and samba school queen Quiteria Chagas two years ago changed all that. Now Mishel has become the first Australian muse (one of the extravagantly dressed dancers leading the processions) to dance in The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Held every year before Lent, the festival is considered the biggest carnival in the world, with two million people taking to the streets every day. “It’s the pinnacle of a 15-year journey for me,” says Michel, home again in Manly, in Brisbane’s bayside, from her triumph at Carnival in March. “Previously I had only ever made it to the second division of Carnival dancers and I started to doubt my ability to ever do any better than that. I met Quiteria while on a trip to Italy and she told me to keep going and asked me to dance in The Carnival with her Imperio Serrano school. I was given a new lease of life.” Mishel, who owns Brazilian dance studio Sambaliscious at New Farm, couldn’t believe her luck. She had danced in The Carnival seven times before, but finally – as a muse – the eyes of the world were firmly fixed on her as she sashayed through the streets. “Muse is the highest level I can get to as an international dancer in the Carnival and it was just an amazing experience,” she says.

“There was nowhere for me to hide so I couldn’t put a foot wrong. I was dancing in a magnificent costume with a head piece weighing 15kg and six-inch heels on. It was tough work in the Rio heat and I needed huge stamina.” Mishel studied languages and linguistics at Griffith University and went on to teach English to international students at Martin College. Latin dancing began as a hobby when she attended classes at Rio Rhythmics Latin Dance Academy at West End. Although she was told she wasn’t a natural-born dancer she became enthralled with the music and culture and continued to pursue her passion, eventually opening Sambaliscious in 2012. “I’m so glad I didn’t stop. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can always achieve your dreams,” she says. “I encountered a lot of resistance, especially because I’m not Brazilian, but I kept going and I got there in the end.” sambaliscious.com.au

COVER STORY

THE SAFARI SNAPPER Meet Jason Hill – he believes sleeping under the stars is a lot more rewarding than “just five stars”, and he promises to take you so far off the beaten track, you’ll forget there was ever a track in the first place. The real-life action man has combined his adventurous streak with his passion for photography, and now runs tours to the remotest parts of Africa, giving people the opportunity to experience the beauty of the country away from the tourist traps. “I love taking people to remote places, allowing them to learn from me and capture some amazing animals and landscapes on film. It’s about raising awareness of what a country has to offer.” Partnering with tour company Safari Frank, Jason, and his girlfriend Emilie Ristevski, also a photographer, will leave their Wellington Point home on June 18 to lead a photo safari to Namibia. “It’s so unique and such a huge country with a crazy landscape and incredible wildlife. It has the biggest sand dunes in the world and the ‘Big Five’,” says Jason, 29. “We will be sharing everything we know about photography and offer the chance to learn first-hand from us while exploring this magical destination.” Looking at Jason’s images, it’s hard to believe the intrepid traveller ever did anything else. But incredibly he “fell into photography” a couple of years ago while working at General Pants Co. in the city. “I would get out to the Gold Coast

hinterland and Scenic Rim on my weekends and explore and take pictures, but it was really just a fun hobby. “It was really just through social media that things took off. Companies including Queensland Tourism and Visit Brisbane and Flight Centre started taking an interest and wanted to buy my images.” Before long, Jason was being commissioned by companies and local tour operators to capture overseas beauty spots. “It became a full-time job and so I quit the retail business,” he says. These days he travels the world shooting pictures for brands including Land Rover, Sony, Ford, and MercedesBenz. The more remote the location, the better – he’s even been choppered in. “I love challenging myself on a shoot. I love harsh conditions because they are real and I push myself. It’s about hiking for three days to get that one photo.” As for the tours, Jason loves sharing his experiences with others. With a local guide, in addition to Jason and Emilie, tour-goers stay in luxury lodges and also experience “glamping” under the stars. “I was always getting asked what camera I had used, how did I capture the frame and how had I edited the shot. I love giving people the opportunity to come and travel with me.” Following Namibia, Jason and Emilie will take a guided safari through Northern Tanzania later in the year. Prices start from $12,350.

THE GARDENING GURU She’s never more relaxed than when chilling in her Norman Park garden. Kim Woods Rabbidge takes pleasure in every frond, leaf and petal in her freshly landscaped space but as an awardwinning gardening writer and photographer, she can also appreciate the genius of other green thumbs. For the past few years the 61-year-old has been taking fellow plant enthusiasts on luxury tours to Morocco, Spain, Italy, and the UK, where they can take in some of the great gardens of the globe. “Morocco is one of my favourite places to visit,” she says. “The garden courtyards are divine and brimming with pots and hanging baskets. FROM PREVIOUS PAGE enchanting country, enriched by various cultures over centuries.” She is a fan of the striking Jardin Majorelle in Morocco and, in Spain, the Alhambra palace and fortress complex in Granada, and the Cordoba Patio Festival when the city bursts into bloom. The UK is another garden go-to, with Kim leading tours of the annual Chelsea Flower Show, along with iconic English gardens such as Vita Sackville-West’s Sissinghurst in Kent, and Christopher Lloyd’s “crazy and fantastic” Great Dixter in East Sussex. With access to many of the UK National Trust’s gardens, Kim recently took a group to Highgrove – the private gardens of HRH The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall – as well as Chartwell, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill. “The grounds are magnificent and include a beautiful lake, extensive potager (kitchen) garden and a studio where Churchill painted,” she says. “The English have such a great gardening culture. The gardens and designers are really cuttingedge. They are very whimsical and fantasy-based so there are many elements to enjoy and to be inspired by.” Kim, president of the Horticultural Media Association Queensland and the creator of the @ouraustraliangardens Instagram handle, operates the tours for Opulent Journeys. Prices for her recent Morocco and Spain tour started at $11,995 for 24 days and Kim is planning tours of Singapore, Sicily and Sardinia for 2020. “Every tour is a joy because people get so much out of it,” she says. “Some people live in apartments so they love to see beautiful landscapes and gardens, but others are serious about making changes to their own gardens and are really inspired by the innovative designs they see. “Our travellers are mostly retired people who really enjoy spending time with fellow adventurers in a relaxed setting, and most have a lot in common – especially a love of learning and visiting beautiful places.” opulentjourneys.com.au

THE DESIGN CONNOISSEUR When you combine shopping with sun, sea and exquisite homewares, it’s the perfect combination. Almost. Add a cocktail or two and you’ve nailed it, according to Melinda Lester. The 52-year-old has been running Pineapple Villa Interior Design and Deco Tour since 2015, and relishes the opportunity to escort groups of likeminded Brisbane women to Bali on the ultimate shopping discovery trip. decorator, Melinda, who previously spent 15 years as a travel consultant, first trialled her tour idea on a group of friends, and found she was onto a good thing. “I am very proud to say I have curated the right formula for what we want to see, purchase and experience,” she says. “We always discover beautiful homewares, divine dining options and the beautiful people and culture of Bali. People love to stock up on quilts, cushions, and lamps, but some have also filled shipping containers with furniture, so you can really make it as big or small

an expedition as you fancy. I absolutely love shopping and interiors and I always say I’m not buying anything on my next trip but I always seem to find something I love. I think we all encourage each other to buy on the trip because we all share that passion.” As a bonus, Melinda’s tour includes a visit to Australian 1980s fashion designer Stuart Membery’s private villa. Melinda, who is friends with him, says it’s a tour highlight. “Stuart is one of the really inspiring people I introduce people to. He does architecture and interior design now so it’s perfect for the tour. Women of a certain age remember wearing his clothing and really enjoy meeting him.” Many of Melinda’s guests have so much fun that they come back again and again. Some have been so inspired that they set up online businesses once home or started to study interior design. “It’s lovely to meet so many new people all the time and to see people making lifelong friendships.” Melinda is now taking bookings for tours in 2020 (May 2-9 and 10-17, from $2295 twin share/$3095 single room). pineapplevilla.com.au

LIFE

Brooke Falvey In the future, when you decide to be ‘European’ and wear a G-string bikini, use sunscreen or you won’t be able to sit down I recently stumbled across a copy of Dear Me, a collection of letters written by celebrities to their younger selves, and it got me thinking about what I would say to my 16-year-old self. At that age, I was in Year 11. I had red hair, a casual job at Blockbuster Video and absolutely no idea what I wanted to do when I finished school. This is what I’d say to my 16-year-old self: Dear Me, I should – or could – impart all kinds of wisdom like where you’ll live and who you’ll love (and shouldn’t love), but I don’t want to give away what’s to come, so I’m going to keep this to the “important”

facts you need to know right now. For starters, stop wearing ridiculously tight, low-rise jeans; buy a size up and be comfortable. No one needs to see your butt crack. Also, you are not now, nor will you ever be, as fat as you think you are. When it comes to grooming, don’t mess with your eyebrows and do not wax your own bikini line. This will only result in you spending hours sitting on the bathroom floor trying to carefully peel the wax off without screaming. Frankly, this is a lesson you can do without. And, in the future, when you decide to be “European” and wear a G-string bikini, use sunscreen or you won’t be able to sit

down for days. Plus, it might save you from having a cancerous mole removed in a few years’ time. If your OP isn’t what you hoped, it is not the end of the world. Yes, Mum and Dad will stress about it, and you will cry, but the good news is you’ll end up where you should be. And biology and algebra will never again play a part in your life. Vodka will make you think you can dance, and you should always believe it. Dance whenever and wherever you like. Embrace family holidays. They won’t happen as often as they do now once you finish school, but when you get the chance, soak up all that craziness.

To steal some advice from Oprah, “No” is a full sentence. Apply it to dates, jobs and basically anything you don’t want to do. I suggest you use it every time someone asks you to their semi-formal. There will be times in your life when you feel like an impostor but trust me, you’ve got this. When you choose your formal partner (he looks like a Backstreet Boy) and he starts acting weird, ditch him and take the guy your parents have as a backup. To wrap it up, there are grand adventures ahead that you can’t even imagine right now. Be brave and be bold but most of all, just be you.

FOOD + DRINK

New order It’s not Italian like nonna used to make but this new link in a restaurant chain covers all the bases RESTAURANT Tony Harper You know when something really good, like your mum’s roast beef sandwich, gets multiplied and industrialised so she can peddle it at the tuckshop or at the Rotary Club Christmas party? It becomes sandwich-by-numbers, watered down, lessened by the scale of production and the penalties of cost, time, and the need for uniformity: yesterday’s bread from the supermarket instead of today’s from the bakery, roast-beef bought already sliced, mustard from a squeeze pack instead of a jar ... that sort of thing. And it tastes like a shadow of the original. I reckon Salt Meats Cheese has fallen into that abyss. It’s a restaurant by numbers. There are something like 13 venues across Queensland and New South Wales, including a food truck, a kind of permanent pop-up at West End, and restaurants at Newstead and Surfers Paradise plus several in its hometown of Sydney, all hugging the water. This article is concerned with the South Bank venue, in the Mantra Hotel. And it feels like a hotel dining room: the staff present and dressed in their black and whites, but showing none of the sincerity and confidence of professional waitstaff; the look clean, neat and faux; the beer and wine list obviously on contract and as dull as the tread on a pair of Crocs. And the food ... a faded facsimile of the original. Why am I even here? There are some natty cocktails on the drinks list, and a concise bunch of wines. All OK. There’s a kind of token nod to Italian varieties. I’m keen for a beer, as always, and the high point is a James Squire One Fifty Lashes. Oh dear. It’s like dining at the airport. All but a couple come from Lion

SALT MEATS CHEESE Mantra, 161 Grey St, South Bank Ph: 3305 2518 Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily Vegetarian and gluten-free options Eftpos and major credit cards On and off street (paid) parking SCORES OUT OF 10 Food: 5 Drinks: 5.5 Vibe: 6.5 Service: 6 WIDE CHOICE … Salt Meats Cheese at the Mantra South Bank Hotel offers a feast of flavours.

Nathan – Little Creatures Pilsner, San Miguel, Heineken, Boag’s, Hahn. The food: Arancini balls (the high point: $14) – rather tasty, saffron-laced, puddled in the middle with cheese (allegedly fontina and parmigiano) that refuses to go beyond liquid, even when cold. But they taste good – crunchy outside, softer in the middle bits, then the ever-liquid ball of cheese. I love saffron so I’m happy. I also love Kraft Singles ...

Calamari ($19) is less good – kind of beer-garden acceptable – lacking seasoning and flavour unless you count the wedge of lemon and the out of place bits of semi-dried tomato (why?); dripping too much oil. If I drink more beer (which I can’t because the offering is so dull) I could eat more of this. But I can’t, so I don’t. Shall I go on? OK. Lamb neck ($32), which should be joyously rich and decadent, is cooked until pliant, but it’s

bland, no fun. Broccolini ($12) has been cooked forever – it’s the colour of armyunderpants, limp, edible. That’s enough. There is nothing diabolical at Salt Meats Cheese; it’s all OK in a food-trough kind of way. But there’s no culinary electricity, no rustic, magical sugo. No anything. Nonna would be horrified. It’s not Italian cuisine, more corporate food with an Italian theme.

RECIPE

Vegie might Packed with taste and texture, this recipe is one worth stealing, says Alastair McLeod The saying that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery is surely just a nice way of justifying misappropriation of a recipe. Sure, the addition of olivada and grilled zucchini is mine, but this dish is the creation of my good friend Anna Gare. Anna has enjoyed a prolific career in media in Australia, but for many years was the force behind Deluxe Catering in Fremantle. I have always loved her lusty, straightforward cooking. Several years ago we worked together at a Melbourne food festival and she demonstrated this upside down dome of Mediterranean vegetables. It blew me away. I hope you feel fawned over Ms Gare. Al x

Olivada 20g currants 1 tbs verjus 170g pitted olives 20g anchovies 1 small clove garlic 15g baby capers 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil 1 tbs lemon juice

Drizzle generously with half the olive oil and the sherry vinegar. Sprinkle with 3 tsp of sugar, salt and pepper. Mix the remaining olive oil with the garlic and brush this mixture on both sides of the eggplant and zucchini wedges. Lay them flat on the second baking tray and season. Bake both trays of vegetables for 25 minutes, turning vegetables halfway through cooking. Allow to cool completely then arrange some of the eggplant,

zucchini, tomatoes and onions over base and sides of a plastic wrap-lined, 2L stainless-steel bowl. For the olivada, combine currants and verjus and stand for half an hour. Meanwhile pound olives, anchovies and garlic to a coarse paste. Add currant mix, capers, olive oil and lemon juice. Set aside. Combine remaining vegetables, herbs and a few spoonfuls of the olivada in a separate bowl and toss gently. Spoon the mixture into the lined bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and press gently. For more than 30 years the seasoned designer has dreamt of creating sets and costumes for the opera by the 19th century Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. “He’s a composer I’ve always wanted to work on,’’ Dale says. “He has a particular style of music and has two of the three most performed operas in the world.” It is a double bonus for the two-time Tony Award-nominated designer, who is

not only working on Opera Queensland’s Tosca production, which opens June 13, but returning to his creative roots in Brisbane. Dale was Queensland Theatre’s resident designer after graduating from NIDA in 1989. He has designed more than 50 costumes for the much-loved opera about a famous singer, Tosca, who is devoted to the artist Cavaradossi. Unfortunately Scarpia, the chief of police, has other plans and shows no remorse in his intent to

destroy their love. The story is set in Rome but instead of using the traditional time period of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic Wars, director Patrick Nolan has chosen the 1970s. Dale, 56, has taken his stylistic cues from 1970s pop culture icons Princess Caroline and Steve McQueen for the lead roles of Tosca (New York-based Rachelle Durkin) and Scarpia (Jose Carbo). “The style of that era was elegant, stylish and flamboyant. For our production

there is a Studio 54 vibe and Jackie O sunglasses,” he says. “I adored Princess Caroline’s style – she was alluring, extremely elegant and enigmatic. For Scarpia I’m going for that bad boy cool of Steve McQueen. “I just threw myself into looking at the Italian political climate at the time, seeking cross-references with the original opera. Fortunately I have a number of French and Italian 1970s fashion magazines and I’ve been waiting for the right production to use them.’’ Melbourne-based Dale, who grew up on a South Australian farm, enjoys working on opera because music “gives another set of information’’ to help design. He says his years in Brisbane helped to make him the designer he is today, including his work on the Broadway production of Exit the King when he received Tony Award nominations for both set and costume design in 2009. “In Brisbane I was straight out of drama school and I got to work with amazing people. For my second production I was working on Robyn Nevin’s A Month in the Country so I was thrown into the deep end. “It was the most intense and pressured time but it made me match-fit. I was lucky to work with big budgets, big casts and on epic work.’’ Dale stayed in Brisbane for five years and then returned for several productions in the late 1990s, when he became a freelancer. The Helpmann Award winner and five-time Green Room Award winner is also designing QT’s L’Appartement, opening at QPAC on August 3. “I’ve got good friends here in Brisbane still and it’s good to be back in a familiar place. It’s great to get the winter in Queensland.” Opera Queensland’s Tosca, Jun. 13-22, QPAC, Lyric Theatre, qtix.com.au

here’s something bittersweet about Emma Lindsay’s gorgeous paintings. And that’s because she is exploring the impact of human activities on the habitats and existence of threatened, endangered and extinct creatures. Her current exhibition Life on Earth at Metro Arts continues her passionate engagement with the natural world as she visually laments the passing of some species and records those that are

still hanging on. Such as the cassowary. In far north Queensland she encountered a female cassowary and painted it for this exhibition. “She was just walking down the street in Etty Bay,” Emma recalls. Emma, 46, who lives at Deagon, first got interested in this subject matter when she was studying at the Queensland College of Art. She heard about the Night Parrot, which was thought to be extinct but has been found to be still around in

Western Queensland. That set her researching at the Queensland Museum and started her on what could be considered her life’s work. Her latest exhibition offers paintings, photographic monographs and videos, all part of her ongoing Anthropocene Project, which is based on her field trips to the Arctic, the Great Barrier Reef, American deserts and national parks and to various museums. “As an artist, mother and human being, I’m compelled to do something about raising awareness of our endangered species, extinction and climate issues through my art,” she says. The project dates back to 2007 and last year she exhibited a series of works about the Great Barrier Reef at a major exhibition in Mackay. Now she’s back with a new show and if the title of it sounds familiar, that’s intentional. “The exhibition is titled after David Attenborough’s television series and book Life on Earth

and includes a selection of paintings and two videos based on specimens of extinct birds seen at the South Australian Museum in 2013 and on a nine-month field trip I made to the Great Barrier Reef in 2017,” she says. “The work connects human narratives to disappearing biodiversity and extinction, a perspective often absent from wildlife documentaries.” This exhibition was made possible with a $5000 grant from The Dean Collection, a philanthropic initiative launched by Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean and Alicia Keys. The American music stars want to encourage young artists and Emma was thrilled to get one of their grants, and equally thrilled to be on a conference call with the famous musos. FAMILY AFFAIR ... Patrick Beresford, wife Jess and son William from 13 Angry Scorpions chilli sauces. Picture: AAP/ Russell Shakespeare

Hot streak Encouraged by some of the toughest food critics, this home cook has taken his hot sauces global Tamille Head

I

t takes a special someone to beat the Yanks at their own game, but Patrick Beresford has done just that. His 13 Angry Scorpions hot sauces, handcrafted at home, have been heating up the foodie scene, with his Jekyll & Hyde sauce named World Sauce Champion in the Hot/X-tra Hot BBQ category at the World Hot Sauce Awards 2019 in Louisiana. Despite having won an impressive 11 national titles, including several gongs in Australia’s Mr Chilli Awards, this latest feat left Patrick speechless. “I had to read

the results two or three times,” he says. “I’m pretty bad when I know an award is due to be announced. I keep checking the website every five minutes.” Not long after the Louisiana win, Patrick’s Chipotle BBQ sauce was named Australian Champion for the second consecutive year in the Mr Chilli Awards. It’s been quite a ride for the passionate home cook, who lives in Brisbane’s bayside with wife Jess and their six-year-old son, William, and who launched his business in 2018.

“It can be tough trying to break through to that next level, but that’s what we’re trying to do now,” he says. “My sauces aren’t as hot as other sauces. It’s about having a certain flavour.” Having previously worked in the construction and mining industries, Patrick has always had a passion for cooking and used to make sauces for family and friends. Then, one day, Jess brought out a bottle of Patrick’s sauce at a gathering of her Italian family. “All the old ladies were sitting around

having coffee and afternoon tea and my wife brought out my habanero sauce (now known as El Bandito) for all of them to try and, to our surprise, they were all completely blown away by how good it was. “Now, anyone who has Italian family will know that it’s nearly impossible to get a compliment out of old Italian women when it comes to food, because everyone knows that they are the best – gnocchi, lasagne, carbonara. Authentic Italian is just the best. “Anyway, they kept on at my wife, ‘What is he doing? He must start selling his sauce! This is the best sauce I’ve ever tasted!’ So I ordered some very basic labels online, bought some bottles from Kmart and started hitting up some local markets. The feedback was very positive ... so we kept selling at the markets and we’ve slowly grown from there.” Patrick produces 200-400 bottles a day, with the line-up free from chemicals, thickeners and gluten, and supplies about 25 Brisbane stockists, including restaurants and bars such as Brewski on Caxton St, and Tipplers Tap and Bloodhound Corner Bar & Kitchen in Fortitude Valley. Hot sauce fans can also try Patrick’s sauces in Hellfire Alley at the Brisbane Chilli Festival this weekend. “Culinary festivals like this are massively important for the growth of our food culture here in Brisbane,” he says. “It’s just a great day for people to come out and enjoy hot sauce, food and music with their family and friends.” Brisbane Chilli Festival, June 9, Waterfront Park, Newstead, $12 adults. brizchillifest.com.au 13angryscorpions.com.au

BRIGHTBURN (MA15+) hhhjj Director David Yarovesky Starring Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn There is a lot to like about this lean, mean anti-superhero movie, produced by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn, but ultimately it doesn’t fly. That’s because director David Yarovesky hasn’t entirely mastered the laws of his own off-centre universe. Pity. Since it’s rich, and somehow “lived-in”. A dark twist on the Superman origin story, Brightburn is named after the rural blue-collar town in which it is set. Teenage sweethearts and former tearaways Tori and Kyle Breyer (Banks and Denman) live in a cosy, run-down farmhouse on its outskirts. It’s a messy, seemingly un-art-directed version of Ma and Pa Kent’s humble abode. The Breyers, too, are a little more, well, human. But their relationship is solid and their behaviour relatable. Despite years of trying, the couple remain childless, so when a meteorite crashes into one of their paddocks, they adopt the baby they find in the wreckage. Sweet, guileless and a little bit overprotected, the next decade of Brandon Breyer’s (Dunn) life passes in unremarkable fashion. But on his 12th birthday – drum roll please – strange things begin happening to his body. Unlike Clark Kent, who uses his superpowers for good, Brandon reveals himself to be a purely destructive force. When his elders thwart him, he lashes out in a surprisingly plausible fashion – the super tantrum. Identifying the mother of a girl he fancies as an obstacle, Brandon pretty much tears her apart. Cruel, violent, merciless, the kid’s evil alter ego is pure id. Shazam! saw the funny side of a super adolescence. Brightburn doesn’t hold back on the horror; we’re talking glass shards in eyeballs and jaws that hang by a tendon. For a genre piece, however, this grimly funny riff on a familiar story lacks tension. And when it comes to evil teens and toxic mother/son relationships, few films could top We Need To Talk About Kevin. As Brandon, Dutton bears a strong physical resemblance to Ezra Miller, who played the title role in that film. But his superhuman psychopath is less powerful.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (M) hhhjj Director Michael Dougherty Starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown Seems not even a giant, radioactive reptile can carry a creature feature on his own any more. Legendary Entertainment has supersized the sequel to its 2014 hit with three “new” monsters, all of which originated in the imagination of Godzilla creator Toho. There’s Rodan, a flying fire demon, King Ghidorah, a three-headed dragon, and my personal favourite, Mothra, a gigantic imago. Godzilla, too, is turbocharged in King of the Monsters, thanks to a welltargeted nuclear explosion. Audiences don’t go to a Godzilla movie for the subtleties of the subtext, or the nuances of human character development.

Writer-director Michael Dougherty’s contribution to the Legendary MonsterVerse gives plenty of bang for its buck – remember, we’re in atom-splitting territory here. It’s hard to recall another action fantasy in which nuclear fission is employed so liberally, and with such little attention to the consequences. Ghidorah is a formidable opponent that draws its elemental power from ancient folklore as well as the surrounding weather patterns. It doesn’t breathe fire, it blasts it. For Godzilla’s close-ups, Legendary’s animators render the prehistoric alpha predator in loving textural detail; this uberlizard feels as though he’s been hewn from the very rocks of existence. And the primal ferocity with which he rips off one of Ghidorah’s heads is perfectly in character. Accustomed to wielding the greatest firepower, the US armed forces have one, uniform, response to any FIGHT CLUB ... Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown (top) bear witness as Godzilla faces off against a new trio of baddies, including King Ghidorah (left).

adversary, even when it outclasses them. And when “blasting the sh#t out of it” doesn’t work, they reload, and fire again. The utter futility of this tactical response is brought home by the scene in which an ant-sized pilot ejects from his fighter plane, only to land in one of Ghidorah’s open mouths. The architecture of destruction that is a hallmark of any creature feature is also lovingly rendered here. The Antarctic substation where Ghidorah has been hibernating, for example, crumples as elegantly as a house of cards. With all that combined technical nous, all those hours spent in the animation lab, all those dollars spent, it seems almost inconceivable that nobody bothered to pay close attention to the dialogue. “Hold on,” says scientist Mark Russell (Chandler), when Ghidorah’s tail thwacks down, spinning the getaway helicopter onto the edge of an icy abyss. “Come on big guy, fight it,” says Dr Rick Stanton (Bradley Whitford) when Godzilla takes what appears to be a mortal hit. And while Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) can add a touch of class to any genre, she struggles to make an impression. Only Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown, as the plucky daughter, survives King of the Monsters with her dignity intact. The plot, involving a bunch of extreme eco-terrorists, is as thin as the earth’s crust – when Rodan decides to breach it. King of the Monsters is big, dumb – but not nearly as much fun as the infinitely superior Kong: Skull Island. And that doesn’t augur well for their upcoming clash in Godzilla vs Kong. RED JOAN (M) hhhjj Director Trevor Nunn Starring Judi Dench, Sophie Cookson, Tom Hughes Frail, meek, beige ... it’s hard to reconcile Judi Dench’s elderly suburban widow, Joan Stanley, with her colourful former life as a Russian spy. The disconnect between the two parallel time frames is what makes this real-life drama so fascinating. It’s also what ultimately brings the filmmakers unstuck. Played as a young woman by Sophie Cookson against a well-frocked period backdrop, Stanley is a green, first-year University of Cambridge student who is introduced to the world of radical politics by her glamorous college mate Sonya (Tereza Srbova). When she falls head over heels for Sonya’s cousin, a Communist heart-throb named Leo (Tom Hughes), the young woman’s politicisation coincides with her sexual awakening. In the heady context of this specific time and place, it’s not hard to see why Stanley might choose to supply nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union after serendipitously landing a job as a secretary in a UK

government research laboratory during World War II. In a volatile political landscape – Hiroshima and Nagasaki play a role in her decision – Stanley sees her actions as levelling the playing field. But while there is a kernel of truth in this nuclear deterrent argument, surely, with the benefit of hindsight, Stanley would have refined or modified her position. Dench’s subtle, nuanced performance

successfully suggests her character is carrying an awful lot of baggage, and I can’t think of another actor who could make Stanley’s mild-mannered dowdiness so compelling. But is it really possible, in the 70-odd years since she committed national treason, that Stanley harbours no doubts about her former ideological position? When she eventually fronts the media –

for which she must summon every last ounce of courage – her pacifist defence sounds rather feeble. Justification or rationalisation? Even the filmmakers aren’t convinced. Alongside Stanley’s dull contemporary existence, Red Joan’s flashbacks feel much more vital. Passionate and pink-cheeked, Cookson’s reluctant activist dresses in natty knitted hats and snug-fitting suits. It’s hard to believe they’re the same woman, which is kind of the point. Red Joan is only very loosely based on the story of the real “granny spy”, Melita Norwood, who didn’t go to Cambridge, didn’t study physics and didn’t relocate to Australia to protect her husband after changing her identity. Unlike Cookson’s English patriot, Norwood was a committed Communist who supplied the KGB with state secrets for more than 30 years. Red Joan’s romantic representation of its central character’s early life is at odds with Dench’s powerful, unvarnished performance. Her backstory might have gelled a little better if the filmmakers had stuck more closely to the facts. VICKY ROACH

Threads of life A Darwin artist and a Brisbane design icon team up to create fashion with a story all its own Fiona Purdon

D

rawing on the vivid colours of a desert sunrise, the work of indigenous artist Louise Numina Napananka has provided the ideal inspiration for Pia du Pradal’s latest collection. Louise’s Amber Bush Yams painting was commissioned by Pia, an icon of Brisbane fashion, and influenced the designer’s new cotton and silk Numina collection of trans-seasonal day wear, formal wear and evening options. “The amber yams are painted in the striking colours of the desert sunrise, shades of coral, yellow and magenta on a black background. The border of white seeds creates an interesting contrast which, when translated onto fabric, allows for very creative fashion detailing,’’ Pia says. Amber Bush Yams marks the third successive annual collaboration between Pia and Louise, a Darwin-based artist whose paintings feature bush medicine leaves and flowers inspired by Dreamtime stories from her Anmatyerre heritage. An emerging artist based in Darwin, Louise was born in 1976 at Stirling Station, a cattle station near Tennant Creek on the edge of the Utopia homelands, and speaks four languages – Anmatyerre, Kaytetye, Alywarre and English. The mother-of-three has strong family ties. She has five sisters, all of whom paint, and she also has two brothers. At age five, Louise would sit with her aunties, renowned artists Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre, and would copy them as they painted. Louise’s paintings predominantly depict Kurrajong bush medicine leaves. The women collect the leaves from around the central desert area, and boil them for resin.

The leaves are also used to treat flu, headache, backache, an upset stomach and chest pains. For cuts and bruises, the oils from the boiled leaves are mixed with kangaroo fat and applied to wounds. This medicine is used to heal cuts, wounds, bites, rashes, and as an insect repellent. Pia, a favourite designer of former governor-general Quentin Bryce, has a degree in social anthropology and is a proud supporter of indigenous women and empowering communities through art and design. She was looking for a new direction with her fashion when she first collaborated with Louise in 2017 and hopes this new collection will spark a curiosity in clients about the artist and her designs. “Louise has a natural eye for colour and her art work is different to other indigenous art I have seen before,’’ Pia says. “Her brushwork creates a mesmerising effect.’’ Pia du Pradal, Brisbane Arcade, Queen Street Mall, city; 20 Park Rd, Milton. piadupradalonline.myshopify.com

ot all buildings are designed to shout. Sometimes the purpose of architecture is to quietly command attention. A great example is Brisbane’s new Art Series hotel, The Fantauzzo, designed by Melbourne architecture firm SJB, led by Tristan Wong. The building delivers sensory and visual impact that’s still at one with the historic Howard Smith Wharves precinct. “The Fantauzzo blends into its context whilst creating an object of great interest 28 BRISBANE NEWS June 5-11, 2019

The work of Vincent Fantauzzo is the centrepiece of Brisbane’s new Art Series hotel, but it’s not the only eye-catching element

and intrigue,” Tristan says. “Despite its highly unique facade composition, it is respectful of its neighbours.” The hotel tucks in below the northern end of the Story Bridge, nestled against the rocky cliff face, forming a backdrop to the revitalised Howard Smith Wharves, with its new dining and culture precinct. The architecture echoes the organic surfaces of the nearby cliff face and the trussed geometry of the Story Bridge, with a faceted facade composed of glazed and opaque wall panels. “We wanted the hotel to take on a kind of camouflage quality, allowing the

historic wharf buildings to be more prominent and distinguishable in the foreground,” Tristan says. “We took the structural forms from the trusses of the Story Bridge to inform the diagonal pattern across the facade.” Earth-coloured facade panels pick up the natural tones of the rock face while vegetated drapery acts to strengthen the idea the building is a natural extension of the landscape. “In some areas the building’s facade is within a metre or two of the cliff face,” Tristan says. “This, too, allows it to blend into the topography.” The idea that the building could be

metaphorically carved from the hillside is reaffirmed by the cavernous spaces of the interior, where the reception desk appears rock-like in its formal and material composition. “Immediately on entering the lobby you see straight through the building to the cliff beyond,” Tristan says. “You feel a connection to the earth.” Black terrazzo floors and dark concrete ceilings intensify the “brooding” atmosphere of the lobby space. The monochromatic colour palette brings focus to contemporary gallery walls populated with photorealist portraits by Vincent Fantauzzo, the hotel’s namesake. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Built-in furniture softens the edginess to these spaces and introduces cooler, jewellike tones in emerald and jade. Upstairs, 166 rooms are arranged across six floors, oriented to face either north towards the cliff face or south towards the Brisbane River and the Brisbane CBD. North-facing rooms frame the cliff as a pictorial view. “The cliff is only metres away from the bed,” Tristan says. “If not for the glass that separates [the inside from outside, you] could [reach out and] touch the rocky surface beyond.” Meanwhile, the south-facing rooms are V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

designed to capture “the serenity of the river, and the majestic quality of the bridge,” he says. “We wanted to create a ‘non typical’ building – not comprising square windows and white walls, but rather a kaleidoscopic array of geometric forms. It’s its deep connection to the site that’s allowed the most important aspects of the precinct to be celebrated: the cliff and river, the historic buildings and the Story Bridge.” Architect: SJB, sjb.com.au Photography: Tom Blachford artserieshotels.com.au/fantauzzo

LAST WORD

Phil Brown Winston Churchill spent a lot of time in bed. In fact he did some of his best work there and I’m not referring to his sex life I’m thinking of taking a week off and just staying in bed. It’s so warm and cozy there at this time of the year and I have the urge to just lie in. For days on end. That would be the ultimate escape. I have a friend who is often in bed when I ring him. Fair enough, I suppose, but at 2pm? When I call him or when he calls me (which is every day or every other day), he always asks: “Where are you and how are you?” “I’m at work and I’m OK,” I say, to which he replies (every time), “Do you never stop?” The thing is I’d like to stop. Which is why the idea of taking a week’s holiday and staying in bed the whole time is an

attractive proposition. And I would be in good company, historically speaking. Many famous figures spent a lot of time in bed. The legendary nurse Florence Nightingale spent the last few decades of her life in bed apparently and from there she harangued the great and the good, doling out advice and being rather cranky, apparently. And she got away with it because she had so distinguished herself in the Crimean War. She spent all that time in bed because she was poorly but she managed to linger to the ripe old age of 90! Former British prime minister Winston Churchill was another who spent a lot of time in bed. In fact he did some of his best

work there and I’m not referring to his sex life. He used to have breakfast in bed followed by a reading of his mail and the newspapers and then, he worked in bed dictating to his secretaries from there. He eventually got up around 11am. I like his style. There are other famous people who worked from bed. The writer Edith Wharton worked in the morning from her bed and Truman Capote did likewise. In a Paris Review interview he described himself as “a completely horizontal author”. “I can’t think unless I’m lying down, either in bed or stretched on a couch and with a cigarette and coffee handy,” he said.

The artist Frida Kahlo painted in bed and of course John Lennon and Yoko Ono turned staying in bed into a protest movement when they staged their bed-ins in the late 1960s. So I may be on to something here. I could write from bed quite happily or even dictate like Winston Churchill although I don’t really have anyone to dictate to. But staying in bed would suit me because I have always had trouble getting out of it. When I was a teenager I liked to sleep in and when my mother would try to rouse me I would say ... “What’s the point of getting up? I’ll just be back here tonight.” How can you argue with logic like that?

I am delighted to recommend Sievwrights The boys were great, very friendly, nothing was too much trouble, By far the best move we’ve ever had. Peter Dick - Breakfast Presenter 4BC

Homestead revival His family co-founded an online travel empire that allowed travellers to jet off to some of the world’s most spectacular destinations. But it was an original homestead in Chelmer that had always caught Will Brice’s eye. “It was down the road from my sister and I must have walked past it a thousand times,” Will, whose family co-founded Wotif.com which was sold to travel giant Expedia six years ago, says. “When the agent called, I had to have it. We bought the house less than two years ago and embarked on a massive renovation, a total rebuild in fact from the ground up. “It was a huge labour of love.” The property called Dalmuir at 10 Lama St, Chelmer – in Brisbane’s leafy western suburbs – was completely transformed by Will and his wife Shona in keeping with its traditional style. Ray White Sherwood agent Adriana Cameron says the luxurious five-bedroom home with four entertaining areas and three bathrooms is “utterly faultless”. The renovation took 12 months as everything had to be rebuilt, including

every leadlight window and sash. The galley-style kitchen has European stainless-steel appliances, a Carrara marble island benchtop, an American walnut island benchtop feature and a scullery with built-in shelving. The house has five bedrooms including a spacious main suite with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Three further bedrooms can be found in the children’s wing, which includes a rumpus room, mud room and laundry.

Escape to rural retreat Perfectly positioned just 3.5km from Canungra and only 36km from the pristine beaches of Surfers Paradise, Oakland is the epitome of a rural retreat, according to listing agent Danny Bukowski. “A luxury family home, privacy, farreaching views and facilities in place to indulge your equestrian passion as well,” he says. “Taking advantage of the Air BnB trend, the owners have opened the doors of magnificent Oakland House and are now enjoying a very handy extra income.” The property encompasses 10.02ha with Canungra Creek winding around the front boundary and the property will be sold with the current 5ha irrigation licence in place. While the houses are elevated to maximise the Lamington Valley views, the fertile creek flats are fenced into horse paddocks with a couple of hillside paddocks offering protection for livestock during wet weather. Knockdown and rebuild For people who love where they live, but not their dated house, then a KnockDown ReBuild could be the answer to creating a dream home. Older Australian houses are being knocked down in suburbs across Brisbane to make way for contemporary homes that are more energy efficient and cater for modern lifestyles. Metricon Queensland general manager, Peter Ryan, says many people don’t realise that it is often more cost effective to build a new home rather than renovate. “With a renovation, you only partially repair your home and, in most cases, unforeseen circumstances occur and costs can quickly escalate,” he says. Peter says building a new home not only achieves a modern, open-plan design but is more energy efficient and built with sustainable materials. “When many homes were built in the 60s, 70s and 80s, the running cost of the home and energy efficiencies were never contemplated,” he says. “Today, they are one of the biggest considerations for all homeowners. “Many of our buyers tell us they love

• • • • • •

their neighbourhood and love their neighbours. They also tell us to renovate, rather than a build new, they are often forced to compromise the design, due to the old home and existing structure.” Peter says with the scarcity of inner-city land, the rate of knock down new builds will only increase. “With the growing urbanisation throughout southeast Queensland, it makes sense to build a home in a suburb that you love to live in,” he says.
