It seems like a long shot given I’m currently so single that if I win a trip for two, I’m going twice. Funny, right? I can’t take credit; I saw it on Instagram. I sometimes wonder if my single status is because I didn’t forward a chain letter back in 1994, or maybe because I’m incredibly awkward any time a guy asks me out. Either way, according to Tamsin the tarot reader, my time being pushed on to the dance floor to catch bouquets or dance to Single Ladies will soon be up. Generally speaking, people tend to find solace in psychics and tarot readers when

they’re at a crossroads, but I do it each time my mum and I visit a health retreat. We book separate appointments and then compare readings. My last appointment back in April certainly delivered – at least on the entertainment front. While most people leave a reading filled with hope and optimism, or something to ponder, I left muttering, “What the …” after being told my dating life was a desolate wasteland. OK, she didn’t use those words but she did tell me that rather than look for a “main meal”, I should instead enjoy lots of “entrees”. That’s right; some people’s relationships are like a lovely long lunch of

pasta and salad, glasses of wine and endless gelato, leaving them feeling happy, sated and fulfilled. Mine is like a sushi train. Sterile. Unromantic. And likely to end in heartburn. It would have hurt if it wasn’t so comical. Not to be deterred, I decided a second opinion was needed and based on the recommendation of a friend, sought out Tamsin the tarot reader. Her place – a couple of demountable huts in the back of Bangalow – was up a dirt driveway that cut through the middle of a field. It felt legit. When I headed inside there was no crystal ball, just a table for two, a pack of tarot cards, and a chicken.

Yes, you read that right. Halfway through my reading Tamsin’s pet chicken came and sat next to me, clucking. That was when Tamsin predicted that I would meet my future husband before my next birthday. This man, she told me, would be older than I am; OK with the fact I am so open and share so much about my life; and we’d be introduced through friends. I’m not sure if she saw it in the cards, or if the chicken was an omen, but either way I’ll take it because it sure beats another plate of sushi. Now, I consider you a friend, so who do you have for me to meet?

Strong suit He’s built a loyal male following with his tailored looks and now Mark Ferguson is dressing the fairer sex Hannah Davies

or many years he resisted the call. But then finally he could resist no more … and so Wil Valor Woman was born. The new tailoring service from Mark Ferguson – the designer behind the Wil Valor bespoke suiting label – is already causing a stir among Brisbane fashionistas and the city’s power dressers. Mark, who founded the label more than 14 years ago, is excited to offer the same focus on fit, colour and style, to women as well as his loyal gents. “Over the last 18 months women have become more into the suiting trend,” he says. “Requests from friends as well as clients’ wives or partners just kept coming and I said no for a long while, but then I just felt like it was the right time for us to launch. “The tailored look has made a big comeback for any red carpet event and women are embracing the pant suit more. If it’s done correctly it looks beautiful and strong which is what Wil Valor is about.” The bespoke service involves Mark taking individual measurements to make a new pattern for each client. From there, the client chooses their own fabrics and design. “The aim is to create suiting that will make you stand out from the crowd while allowing your inner strength to shine.” Mark, a former real estate agent and professional basketball player for the Townsville Crocodiles, launched Wil Valor in Townsville in March 2005, because “being 6ft 5in and athletic” he couldn’t find anything to fit. He’s had no formal training but says he’s learnt “on the job through trial and error”

and is finally doing what he was born to do. The proof is in his store in the city’s trendy new Brisbane Quarter, and a high profile clientele which includes celebrity chefs Miguel Maestre and Manu Feildel, interior designer Laurence LlewelynBowen, and most recently Osher Gunsberg for TV’s The Masked Singer. “The brief for Osher was bright but not too bright because it can look cheap too,” he says. “I’ve had people tell me they’re watching the show to see what suit he wears next, which is really cool.” Going forward, the dad-of-three is keen to dress Hugh Jackman, Keanu Reeves and Chris Hemsworth, not to mention his celebrity crush Dannii Minogue. With prices starting at $1500, he recommends every woman invest in a black or midnight blue suit as their “go-to staple” before indulging in something more colourful and quirky. “Women’s suiting is more complicated than men’s because of their body shapes,” he says. “There are also more styles and design work involved so there is a lot of value in there for the price. “What I love about the women’s side of the business is that I can be a bit more creative with the designing. “I also love the women’s reactions when they try their suit on. They are so much more excited and intense about things compared to the men. Style My Celebration also specialises in on-trend dessert and grazing tables. “One of the most memorable events I’ve been hired for was an engagement party turned surprise wedding,” says the 39-year-old mum of three from Pullenvale in Brisbane’s west. “I only found out the engagement party would be a wedding two weeks before the event so I became involved with the process of keeping it a secret and arranging the reveal during the party.” She even stayed on site for the “it’s a wedding!” reveal, ready to transform the space. “I had the pleasure of revealing the ceremony area with 50 beautiful longstemmed roses I had weaved through a garden arch and lit up with fairy lights and candles. “While the ceremony went ahead, I added wedding items to the decor to transform it from engagement to wedding. It was lovely to see the surprise on the guests’ faces and be part of the couple’s special moment.”

THE FOOD Imagine hosting a dinner party in your home for your nearest and dearest – without touching a pot or pan and at the end of the night you walk into a spotless kitchen. The Cairns-based former marketing and events specialist is behind the app Gathar. Through the app, home entertainers can connect with local professional chefs to cater for their milestone birthday parties, hen’s nights, recovery brunches or backyard barbecues. “Your culinarian will come to your home or holiday pad with all the ingredients. They’ll cook, serve and clean up. All you need to do is create the memories,” says Jodie, who co-created Gathar with Cairns-based foodies Nicky

Jurd and Kaj Haffenden. Gathar arrived in Brisbane in June and is also catering to Sydney, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Port Douglas. But Jodie, Gathar’s chief executive, says the ultimate goal is to take the app global and she remembers the exact moment she knew it could happen. “In the early days of planning, I tested the Gathar idea with a family dinner party under the stars on my parents’ farm in Freshwater (Cairns),” she says. “It was a three course French-Australian menu with savoury crepes to start, prawn ragu for mains and tiramisu for dessert, all cooked by Chef Chris. “I remember having a conversation with my mum that night about how she designed our family home 30 years ago and it was a story I’d never heard before. “I thought to myself, ‘This is the magic of Gathar – moments with your loved ones around your dinner table, that you just wouldn’t have if you were in the kitchen cooking or running around like a typical host’. And then there’s the priceless feeling of walking into a spotless kitchen at the end of the evening.” There are 20 Brisbane chefs waiting to cook for you, specialising in all manner of cuisines. THE MUSIC The venue is booked, you’ve nailed the decorations and the caterer is ready to go – hooray! But what about the music? If you’re not happy to plug in a playlist then where do you start? It was this very dilemma before their 2014 wedding that had Woolloongabba’s Rebecca Jancauskas and Rory Winter propping up a bar, drowning their sorrows after a fruitless search for a live act. “We knew we wanted a live band for our reception but we were finding many up-and-coming acts didn’t have websites

for bookings, or the agents for the more professional artists were impossibly slow getting back to us,” Rebecca, 38, recalls. “We were sitting chatting to a barman, who just happened to be a musician. He explained to us how tough it was to actually find gigs and that agencies can take commissions up to 50 per cent. We were gobsmacked and we started thinking there just had to be a better way.” It was that pub chat that lead to the creation of CrowdPleaser, an online marketplace that connects event organisers with live entertainment acts across the country: a bit like Airbnb or Tinder for musicians. Rory, who has

a background in marketing, now works full-time on CrowdPleaser while Rebecca, a lawyer, works part-time in the business. The website allows party-givers to search by suburb and type of act, and it has everything from acoustic soloists and classical combos to rock bands and magicians. Performers are reviewed by event organisers and pricing is displayed on their profiles. “Entertainers also upload video of themselves performing, which is the next best thing to seeing them live. It’s a great place to find someone out of the ordinary and within your budget for your next event,” Rebecca says. Brisbane’s “King of Rock and Roll” Pete Memphis is a CrowdPleaser convert. He started out doing Buddy Holly impersonations but the requests for Elvis Presley songs led him to a full-time career performing as the “Big E”. “It’s amazing even all these years after his death, Elvis’s music and legend live on. I love bringing that bit of Vegas dazzle to events,” Pete says. Pete plays everything from birthday parties to weddings, with many of his gigs now organised through CrowdPleaser. “As an entertainer I like it because you can speak directly to the organisers, so there is no miscommunication and you aren’t paying big fees to talent or booking agents; it’s just a 10 per cent flat fee,” Pete says. Since it launched, CrowdPleaser has created almost $2 million worth of work for Australian performers. It means the musicians’ marketplace is not just a great way to find the perfect live act, it’s also a great way of helping turn talent into a dream job for an upcoming artist. Art of healing This artist draws on the power of painting to help people overcome struggles and unlock their potential Kate Dodd Rose Hewartson is used to people saying “What the heck is holistic art therapy?” when she reveals her day job. “To be honest, I had no idea myself, so I can only guess they are the same,” says the Mount Gravatt resident, who earned a diploma in Holistic Integrated Art Therapy from Paddington’s Wholistic Art College earlier this year. The artist and photographer, who has a background in nursing, treats clients who are looking to lead more fulfilled lives. To do this, they might want to quieten the “mind chatter”, get out of a rut, or find motivation or direction. Rose says many of her clients are middle-aged women. “If they just want to get unstuck in an area of their life it might only take a few sessions,” she says. “If they are overcoming trauma then that is a much

longer process. It’s totally up to the client. “I usually advise a minimum of three sessions.” While every session is tailored to the individual, Rose, 51, has a series of exercises she uses to help clients open up, such as painting their feelings or assigning colours to feelings and creating abstract artworks. “It’s about getting people unstuck in their lives, getting them to use art as a way to reflect on how they are approaching their lives. It helps people heal.” Rose discovered the soothing power of painting while going through a difficult time while homeschooling her now grownup son, and she wanted to share its healing benefits with others. “Because of my experiences with my son, I also have a desire to help children and mothers of children who are struggling in

the school system,” she says. “It can be a difficult road to navigate without help.” She says her clients have told her they’ve enjoyed the journey of “self-discovery” and learning things about themselves they hadn’t realised. Being able to help people discover for themselves what may be holding them back in life, to open up their own minds and

body to a level they didn’t think possible brings Rose so much “joy and satisfaction”. “It’s mind-blowing, really,” she says. “As humans we have so much potential. We just have some beliefs, conditioning, stress and trauma layered over our potential.” rosehewartson.com.au

fter close to a decade-and-a-half, Mecca Bah has packed its pots and pans and moved from Emporium at Fortitude Valley to Gasworks Plaza at Newstead, just a stone’s throw away. And there it sits, in a similar corner position, peddling much the same stuff, with much the same look: outdoors and indoors. Although, from memory, it’s now a little more pink, and perhaps a little larger. I remember dining in the Melbourne venue when it was new, years before it came to Brisbane. It was a “thing”. Melbourne loved it, I loved it. It was, I guess, a delightfully new concept, with its Moroccan and Middle Eastern food in a comfy, slightly exotic setting. And I’m not suggesting the idea has tired; merely that the idea of Mecca Bah has become familiar – we’ve all dined 12 BRISBANE NEWS November 20-26, 2019

Not much has changed on the menu, which also includes brunch on weekends. It has mezze, pizzas, salads, tagines, seafood and other bits and pieces. Back when I was something of a Mecca Bah regular it was the lamb pizza and the boureks. So I get them again, along with a mezze of rustic cauliflower ($14), sticky king prawns ($22). The lamb pizza ($25) is every bit as good as I recall. It’s pide really, shaped like Aladdin’s shoe with a toe at each end, generously piled with lamb (billed as spitroasted. Is it really? Perhaps, perhaps not, but it tastes great) with minted yoghurt, a big pile of rocket and sumac seasoning. I recall some of the other versions (there are chicken, haloumi, mushroom and surf & turf) being good ... just not in the same league as the lamb. And the boureks ($15) are a bit ho-hum.

My memory is like an old-school television, sometimes bright and in colour; sometimes scratchy and black and white. And this patchy memory has the boureks a little fatter, dusted in icing sugar and cinnamon – sweet and spice on savoury. But no longer, if it were ever true; maybe I ordered the wrong dish. These are serviceable – lamb samosas really, with a Middle Eastern twist, and sitting on a puddle of yoghurt. The prawns are better, sticky and delicious, with couscous, grilled flatbread and superfluous bits of salad. Not bad. As for the cauliflower ... it’s merely OK. It’s been dusted in seasoning and fried, but the seasoning has no punch and the whole thing is simply cauliflower (the king of bland) wafted through the idea of something exotic. In the end it’s enjoyable, inexpensive food without being spectacular. But it is a little left of centre, and it is part of a package made with thought and imagination; a break from the mundane.

Easy as pie Dust with sugar for crunchy, pastry perfection, says Alastair McLeod Pastry is perhaps perceived to be the preserve of professional cooks. If that’s how you feel, this is the recipe for your repertoire. No special pie dish is needed as the pie is free formed with the dough draped back over the fruit. The pastry comes together every time, it is reliable, easy to work with and tastes incredible. This classic Italian dessert is the perfect way to use myriad seasonal fruit. Late season strawberries are soon to be surpassed by stone fruit, which then yield to apples. A key step is to shake sugar over the pastry prior to baking for a fabulous crust. Shake and bake!

STRAWBERRY CROSTATA Ingredients 50g caster sugar + 2tbs + additional for sprinkling ½ cup macadamias 30g butter, softened 1 egg yolk 1tsp vanilla paste 375g berries Thick cream, to serve

Pastry 180g plain flour 65g caster sugar 100g butter, chilled and diced 3tbs chilled water

Method Preheat oven to 190C. Process the 50g of sugar and macadamia until finely chopped. Add butter, yolk and vanilla and process again until mixture comes together. Set aside. Pastry Place flour, sugar and butter in food processor and process until mxture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add water and pulse until mixture comes together. Turn out on to floured board and knead until smooth. Shape into a round, wrap and chill for 20 mins. Roll pastry out between two sheets of greaseproof paper to a 25cm round. Remove the top sheet and spread macadamia mixture leaving a 1cm border. Toss the berries in the 2tbs of sugar and arrange over the macadamia mixture. Fold pastry over the berries leaving half the fruit exposed. Brush the top with water and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 30 mins or until golden and crisp. Allow to cool for 10 mins before serving. Making waves Big names are banding together to save Toondah Harbour Fiona Purdon The beauty of Moreton Bay has inspired many artists over the years and now, to help protect the aquatic playground, 50 local talents are uniting for the Saving Toondah – Artists for Moreton Bay show at the Woolloongabba Art Gallery. Prominent artists including Archibald finalist Peter Hudson, Ian Smith, and John Honeywill have joined emerging talents such as Bayton Award winner Erin Dunne to donate works. All pieces are $150 and money raised will go to Birdlife Australia for their campaign to protect the wetlands of Toondah Harbour and Moreton Bay. Each artist is contributing one to two

pieces, including paintings, sculpture, limited-edition prints and drawings. Ian, whose works hang in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Gallery of Australia, had no hesitation to donate his work Islands in an Encroaching Sea, especially with his personal connection with Moreton Bay. “From 2004 to 2014 I had a getaway place on Lamb Island, just south of Cleveland … doing artworks on tidal Lamb Island matured my view of the ecoimportance and beauty of the mangroves – often dismissed, ignored, undervalued as the ugly sister of our bright sandy beaches

with sparkling blue waves,” Ian says. “The title arose literally, as I loosely brushed curls of painted seawater around blocky island shapes on my canvas.” Other contributing Queensland artists include Karen Stephens, Maureen Hansen, Stephen Nothling, Mostyn Bramley-Moore and Megan Forward, whose work The Great Wave meets Moreton Bay was inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760-1849) The Great Wave off Kanagawa. “While we don’t have huge waves crashing into our shores, we do have the beautiful blue, grey, green and brown colours of Moreton Bay, and the mangroves that grow around the perimeters that are so vital for providing habitats and supporting new life in the ecosystem,’’ Megan says. Bayside artist Clare Purser only needs to turn to her own Moreton Bay

neighbourhood and surrounding islands for inspiration for her abstract-landscape paintings. Clare says Toondah Harbour is a significant wetland protected by the Ramsar Convention – an international agreement to protect habitats of endangered species, in this case, critically endangered shore birds. The area is being threatened by a large marina development. “The wetlands are an important feeding site for around 50,000 shore birds, including migratory birds that stop over from as far away as Siberia and fatten up on the nutrient rich mud flats. Bah humbug! After rave reviews last year, Eugene Gilfedder returns as Ebenezer Scrooge in Shake & Stir’s A Christmas Carol Hannah Davies

ou won’t hear Eugene Gilfedder lambasting the Christmas season, but when he takes to the stage as Ebenezer Scrooge a curmudgeonly transformation will occur. The acclaimed actor will spend his nights hunched over the coals, counting his fortune and cursing the happiness of others … until a few unexpected visitors arrive. It’s the second time Eugene has taken on the iconic role in Shake & Stir’s awardwinning production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. He jumped at the chance to do it all again. “It went beautifully well last year and when they asked me to be Scrooge again this year I thought, ‘why not?’ ” he tells Brisbane News. “Everyone likes playing the villain and it really is a very special production. It’s spectacular in the way it’s staged. It has all sorts of surprises and a great heart to it. “The first time I went on stage last year I was hiding and listening to the audience coming in and I heard so much children’s laughter it really was lovely. But of course it has a special appeal right across the ages and as well as the younger kids, older people will also come to see it, which I love.” Eugene, who lives at Ipswich, west of Brisbane, doesn’t remember reading the Dickens classic as a child, but says the story of A Christmas Carol is still relevant. “It’s one of those things which is just part of our subconscious,” he says. “It’s part of our culture and even if you haven’t read the book you know of it. The special tale of Scrooge and his transformation is iconic and still

resonates with our times because the undercurrent of Dickens’ mission as a writer was to bring to life the misery of the poor and appeal to the generosity of the human spirit.” With a stage career that began in 1981, Eugene has taken part in more than 100 theatre productions as an actor, director, writer, musical director, sound artist and composer. In 2000 he won the Melbourne Green Room Award for Best Actor for his performance in A Beautiful Life. He is a six-time recipient of the Matilda Award for excellence in Queensland theatre. Despite his accolades, Eugene says he doesn’t consider himself to be “theatre royalty” and feels privileged to have enjoyed success in such a competitive industry. “I’ve had a massively wonderful time and really value it because not everyone has the opportunity to do it,” he says. “I still have gaps between acting (jobs) as all actors do – that’s the way of life – but my work has accumulated over all this time to a great wealth of experience and I have enjoyed it immensely.” Not one to “make any real plans” for the future, for now Eugene is content with being Scrooge again, and unlike his onstage character, he says he is most definitely looking forward to Christmas. “I think everyone likes it when the holidays come and I think probably since ancient times everyone loosens up come late November. FORD V FERRARI (M) hhhhj Director James Mangold Starring Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Tracy Letts Who doesn’t love a finely tuned underdog story – especially one with as much grunt as this one? Henry Ford II’s (Letts) calculated, multimillion-dollar foray into endurance car racing hardly amounts to a victory for the little guy. But the engine of this handsome biopic is the relationship between two of his maverick employees – smooth-talking Texan automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and scrappy British race car driver Ken Miles (Bale). As director James Mangold tells it – working from a script by Jez and JohnHenry Butterworth and Jason Keller – the nonconformist speed freaks outsmarted the Ford Corporation’s college-educated suits and the laws of physics to build a race car that could beat Ferrari in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Ford’s grudge against Enzo Ferrari was personal. After rejecting a buyout offer from “The Deuce”, the Italian racing legend rubbed salt into the wound by insulting the powerful chief executive with a couple of well-placed, ego-puncturing barbs. The resultant, cutthroat feud between the Yanks and “the Wops” provides a colourful backdrop for this handsome period biopic. The way Mangold tells it, Ford executive Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) approached Shelby with an offer that was too good to refuse not long after the Ford/Ferrari deal

With the help of a crack team of mechanics and engineers, and bankrolled by Ford, he and Miles set about building a car that could beat the dominant Italians in the 1966 Le Mans race. The gulf between Ferrari’s hand-machined workshop and Ford’s assembly line production model is clearly delineated. As is the difference between Shelby and Miles’ instinct-driven, hands-on approach and their employers’ reliance on computerdriven, lab-tested results – there’s a fun scene in which a seasoned engineer solves an aerodynamic issue with sticky tape

and string. Ford v Ferrari acquits itself exceptionally well on the track – you can practically feel the adrenaline rush and smell the exhaust fumes. But it’s the two central performances, combined with a scene-stealing cameo from Letts and a pumping, country-tinged soundtrack, that give this film its edge. Letts portrays Ford as a third-generation hard-arse, but the shrewd, supremely entitled chief executive might just have met his match in Shelby, a wily operator and fearless negotiator. The film’s corporate powerplays are

Combined with his tender relationship with the young son, who adores him, this renders his character a bit more human than your average, speedobsessed race car driver. Ford v Ferrari’s final scenes negotiate an emotionally satisfying compromise between wish fulfilment and historical veracity. If 20th Century Fox’s version of events isn’t entirely true, then it damn well ought to be.

After learning that her revolutionary power-saving device is going to be launched before she has ironed out a potentially catastrophic kink in the software, Elena Houghlin (Naomi Scott) turns to the Angels for help. But somehow, her former employer’s hired assassin is always one step ahead. When their assigned Bosley, Edgar (Djimon Hounsou), is unceremoniously dispatched, a new one, Susan (Banks), takes his place. There’s an elaborate identityswitch routine in Elena’s former, multistory office block and a chase sequence in an abandoned stone quarry, during which Elena pops her action cherry. The climactic set piece, at the project launch at her old boss’s (Sam Claflin) mansion, does its job and the film acknowledges the popular ’70s TV series upon which it is based. LOVE ALL … The Ascot Queenslander was transformed with a sculptural staircase, wide windows and lightfilled spaces that open to the tennis court and pool.

here were plenty of reasons to love this majestic Ascot Queenslander but what Anthony and Debby really fell for was the tennis court. For a family of tennis enthusiasts, restoring the tennis court to a competitive match surface was as much the focus of the redesign of the site as the refurbishment of the century-old Queenslander. Brisbane architecture practice, Refresh Design, took it a step further by engaging the social spaces of the home in the spectacle of the game. “One of the concepts was to have a layer of spaces where family and friends can interact with those playing tennis on the edge of the house,” architect, Corinne Trang says. “The edge between the dining room and tennis court was really important.” Timber eaves emphasise the “carving out” of rooms beneath the house to bring the social spaces together on the ground floor. The placement of a long timber bench seat in front of an extended bank of bi-folding windows makes this prime spectator position part of the architecture. The view from the dining table to the tennis action is almost as good, just another metre from the same set of windows. Further along, a slightly more V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

elevated ledge creates a bar beside the kitchen window where more can gather court-side. “A big challenge to overcome was creating a sense of family connection over a large floor area and over two levels,” Corrine says. “We adopted the idea of creating a heart, a central space connecting the tennis court and pool to the kitchen, dining and living spaces. It’s also where we placed the staircase connecting the upper floor and where we’ve introduced as much natural light as possible.” To create this “heart” the floor of the original Queenslander was partially removed and new windows introduced at high level. The old verandah was preserved, so from the tennis court it appears as it once did. At ground floor the social spaces are awash with northern sunlight. The vertical volume is further emphasised by the central staircase connecting to the bedrooms upstairs. “Because the staircase was placed centrally, we designed it to be a piece of joinery,” Corinne says. “We’ve integrated a daybed and storage at the back and a shelf for artwork. That way it becomes part of the house and more than just a circulation device.”

The edge between the dining room and tennis court was really important

The open timber treads bring a lightness to this important functional and sculptural element. Balustrades are expressed in white timber on one side and on the other, vertical steel cables invisibly connect the timber stringer to the ceiling. Sunlight and views filter through both treads and balustrades, bringing drama to the ceremony of moving between floors. The staircase is deliberately part of the social spaces, dividing dining room from living room, while still maintaining views to the tennis court. “What makes a house good for living is really the natural light inside,” Corinne says. “We really invested in glazing and at first Anthony and Debby questioned if it was worth carving so much out of the house. But now we all appreciate how

much light we get in here and everyone is very pleased.” The material palette strengthens the intentions to balance a sense of lightness and warmth. “We usually limit our palette to two or three materials so it’s not visually overwhelming,” Corinne says. “Here we’ve combined timber and stone with white painted elements.” Naturally finished timber is used extensively, on floors and on all window and door frames. White painted timber is used more sparingly not just on the staircase balustrade but also in the ceiling. I certainly know how to generate drama in my daily life, although I’m not sure if that’s the basis of a professional life on the stage. In Hong Kong when we were kids we used to go on Sunday drives to an old hotel that held a talent quest and my old man would always volunteer me as an act and people would applaud and I would refuse to

get up and it would turn into an unpleasant scene, me sitting stony-faced through the rest of lunch. Scarred for life I was, so maybe that put me off performing. I had done some poetry recitation in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and took to the stage in Year 6 with our little pop band The Sidetracks. I kind of liked being on stage but never went on with it. In fact it was years between gigs and it wasn’t until my senior school years at Miami State High School on the Gold Coast that I trod the boards again. A couple of mates and I did a Goons skit for the school one day and I did have a small role in the musical Camelot in Year 12. I played a

Which is probably a good way to be really, according to actors. One doesn’t want to be too relaxed about performing, apparently. Even seasoned troupers tell me they are still nervous before going on and that gives them an edge. I don’t think I would be able to perform in a structured environment but I would like to work up a little stand-up comedy act. I have already planned my entrance. I would be carried on upon a stretcher and start with … “I’m awfully sorry, I’m ill and

I’ve done quite a lot of public speaking in recent years, which has prepared me, to a degree. I have also, in my career as a poet, read my stuff in public at poetry readings and let me tell you, they prepare you for anything and really build resilience. When you’re reading your poetry and baring your heart and soul to a room full of at least half a dozen people (five of whom aren’t listening), well, that builds character. And when two of them walk out halfway through what do you do? You just keep going. That’s showbiz.

While Andrew Ridgeley is one of the most recognisable faces of the 1980s as half of Wham!, not much is actually known about him. This book doesn’t help. Ridgeley introduced school friend Georgios Panayiotou to the idea of being in a band. It was the early 1980s in Margaret Thatcher’s England and somehow, perhaps as a reaction to punk and mod revivalists like The Jam, these teenagers made some of the most memorable songs of the era. Ridgeley defends his own musical ability, limited as it might have been compared to George Michael’s. The story is all about George, his struggles with his sexuality and fame, but it’s like a fluffy article in Smash Hits, that bible of 1980s music. And we still don’t know the answer to the trivia question – whatever happened to the other guy from Wham?!

Botanists are not just scientists peering down microscopes; they are explorers, trailblazers and inventors who have shaped the way we live, says UK TV presenter Matthew Biggs. He introduces 36 great botanists, from the “father of pharmacology” Pedanius Dioscorides, a Roman Army herbalist whose observations formed the basis of medicine for 16 centuries, to Austrian monk and discoverer of modern genetics Gregor Mendel. One early Australian botanist was Georgiana Molloy, who found respite from her punishing life as a pioneer in Western Australia’s Swan River colony in the early 1800s by pursuing her passion for plants – collecting and pressing specimens to send to London. As inspiration for gardeners, Biggs includes pictures and text about plants relevant to each botanist.
