This week... Years ago I interviewed the great Australian hairdresser Kerry Warn, the genius behind hairdos for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, Nicole Kidman’s The Hours, and Blade Runner 2049, to name just a few of his many film credits. I asked him where he found his inspiration and he told me that young people, with their wild cuts and mad dye jobs, often spotted on London buses, were a rich source of styling ideas. They were fearless in their expression of self and, in his view, utterly original. The same could be said of the young fashion designers featured in our Cover Story (P8) this week. Phoebe Sheehy (right), Alice Nightingale and Isabella Longginou are fiercely talented, ambitious and hellbent on creating out-of-the-ordinary clothes for connoisseurs of fashion. True mavericks, wouldn’t you say? Enjoy the issue.

An open book Stand-up star Chelsea Handler plumbs the depths of her soul to forge a stronger connection with Aussie audiences Cassandra Houghton
U
S comedian Chelsea Handler is getting a few things off her chest with her latest live show, based on her book Life Will Be the Death of Me: … and you too! “I think I was just born loud and proud and ready for action – like, let’s get this party started,” she laughs, on the phone to Brisbane News from her home in Los Angeles. “You know, when I started to write it, it was just one of those creative vomit experiences where something comes out of you. I hadn’t written a book or done a stand-up tour in a long time, so I didn’t really want to do that again until I had something to say, and I feel like I finally have something to say.” Next month Chelsea, 44, brings her show to Brisbane, where fans will be treated to the irreverent, brash humour they have come to expect from her standup, movies and shows including Uganda be Kidding Me: Live, a comedy special based on her book of the same name; the talk show Chelsea Lately; and her five New York Times No.1 best-selling books. Since quitting short-lived Netflix talk show Chelsea at the end of 2017, her focus has switched to activism – she has joined forces with EMILY’s List to help elect more women to public office, register people to vote and campaign for candidates who are fighting for women’s rights. So this is a tour with a difference. Deeply personal, she explores a dark
period of therapy and soul-searching relating to her brother’s death when she was a child, and how she dealt with grief growing up. Oh, and the therapy was prompted by the US’s 2016 election of Donald Trump. “I couldn’t understand how anybody could have elected Donald Trump to be our president. That was a very dark time for me,” she says. “Once I started to learn more about myself in therapy, I was like ‘oh my gosh, if I’m having this much trouble with my life can you imagine how many other women are feeling exactly like this and don’t have the luxury of going to a psychiatrist?’ “I needed a professional to tell me you know, like, stand up and fly straight! Get your act together! And I was so receptive and so open to it that I had to share it with everybody,” she laughs. She says the latest book, together with the therapy, transformed the way she does stand-up. “I now understand the concept of being present while doing something like this,” she says. “Not making it about cashing a cheque, but making it about a great experience for my audience and for me. For the longest time I would drink and go on stage and you know, kind of half ass it. “You get kind of lazy, or I did – I shouldn’t speak for other artists. They’ll be like ‘shut up – that never happened to me’. “But yeah, this is the first time I’ve ever, ever been really present with my stand-up and it feels great.”

COVER STORY
The art of dressing Young and talented with a passion for fashion, these designers have found their niche in a competitive industry NEWVINTAGE Alice Nightingale If the words handmade, vintage, ethical and sustainable push your sartorial buttons, then Alice Nightingale could be your new best friend. The designer, who recently opened her first bricks-and-mortar store in Fortitude Valley, makes clever creations from upcycled and recycled fabrics. If she buys new fabrics, they are exfactory remnants. “Normally it would go to landfill but if I use it, it’s done in an ethical way. People are coming around to the flex of fashion, they’re becoming more aware,” Alice says. The retro pieces, sewn on Alice’s Janome using second-hand, vintage and locally produced fabrics are, in her words, “colourful, quirky, Australian, sarcastic”. Her store is a sea of brightly coloured jumpers emblazoned with fun slogans and dresses with kookaburra prints, with styles available only in small quantities. “I left school in Year 11 to do a diploma and I was sewing everything but wasn’t sewing what I wanted. I was making 120 of the same dress but I hated it and then something clicked,” Alice says of her decision to make just a handful of each design. The 27-year-old, who grew up at Robina on the Gold Coast, launched her business online in 2009 and says back then her aesthetic was at odds with the city’s typically beachy look.
“People on the Gold Coast didn’t understand the full skirt and would look at you like, ‘What’s that?’,” she laughs. Ten years on – eight of them selling her wares at Finders Keepers Markets in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – the brand is still here. Bigger than ever. Alice is also a member of the Fashion Revolution, a global movement working to change the way clothes are sourced, produced and purchased. “I had someone in the store the other day who wanted to buy some earrings that were handmade but aren’t from Alice Nightingale and she asked, ‘Will this still benefit the seller?’ and I explained they get a cut. So it shows
people are starting to think about it.” From the beginning, Alice has also taught others to sew – something she still does every Wednesday evening at her cute store in California Lane. “I get quite a lot of happiness out of the finished product and I want other people to have that joy. And from an ethical standpoint, it’s nice to teach people how to fix their clothing or hem it, instead of throwing it away and buying new.” CLOE READ Alice Nightingale, Shop 4, California Lane, 356-376 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley. alice-nightingale.myshopify.com
DEMI-COUTURE Isabella Longginou The bride asked for something different, so Isabella Longginou reached for silvergold Lurex, moulding it into a fitted bodice, balloon sleeves and a five-tiered frilled skirt. “As she moved, the light captured the metallic threads in the fabric and it sparkled,” Isabella says. “There was nothing traditional about this outfit and that’s what my client was wanting – something different but still very ‘her’.” Creating bespoke outfits, many of them bridal gowns, is an all-consuming passion for the designer, 31, who works

from her home studio in Hamilton. “As soon as I see my client’s facial expression when they come to pick up their outfit, I know my work is done,” she says. “It’s the best feeling in the world.” Clients come from country Queensland, interstate and overseas for Isabella’s custom creations, often for a special occasion. “All of my pieces are individually designed and made for each client and their needs,” Isabella says. “It’s the best feeling in the world knowing your garment is a one-off, fits you perfectly and won’t be seen on anyone else at the same event.” Isabella, who studied fashion design at
TAFE Queensland, comes from a long line of fashionistas. Her nonna, Clelia, worked as a seamstress and her mother, Delisa, also studied fashion design. “Now my mum works with me; we make an amazing team. She helps with pattern making and we throw ideas off each other.” Isabella’s husband, Little Valley restaurateur Andrew Hohns, is a huge supporter. “He is a super hard worker and he pushes me to do better and to keep going. As stressful as it is, I love my job. I love what I do and I love my clients.” ALEXANDRA BROWNING isabellalongginou.com.au
She says she hasn’t had “a real job” in five years but Phoebe Sheehy is rushed off her feet these days after graduating from QUT’s Fashion360 program. The 28-year-old is the talent behind punk music-inspired label Phoebe Paradise and she is looking forward to taking her business to new heights. “I’ve worked in call centres, warehouses and music studios over the years but now I really want to focus on going forward with Phoebe Paradise,” she says. “I love making stuff and to work in fashion forever would just be fantastic.” Phoebe, of Fortitude Valley, launched Phoebe Paradise in 2014 after dropping out of a digital arts diploma to design promo T-shirts for bands, and then clothes for bands to wear on stage. Aimed at women in their 20s and 30s, the label now features T-shirts, dresses, skirts and jackets in prints inspired by music and art. When designing, Phoebe says she also incorporates “distinctly Queensland” details such as “the grimy cityscape” and “drinking culture and
violence” juxtaposed with “the natural beauty that permeates across the state”. The new collection features handpainted garments, and everything is designed and manufactured in Australia. “When people are on stage they want to stand out and this label enables them to do that,” Phoebe says. “But a lot of women are also buying the designs to wear to gigs or just to the shops.” Phoebe sent her latest designs down the runway earlier this month to celebrate her graduation from the Fashion360 course. Australia’s only fashion accelerator program, the six-month course run by Creative Enterprise Australia equips six emerging fashion entrepreneurs with the skills needed to execute and sustain a growing business. The former Indooroopilly State High School student has enjoyed the journey. “I’ve been mentored and pushed and educated in this world of fashion,” Phoebe says. “The professional development and support has been amazing.” HANNAH DAVIES phoebeparadise.com

All for love When her son came out as gay, devoted mum Shelley Argent found herself in the fight of her life — for marriage equality Leanne Edmistone
PRIDE AND JOY … Activist Shelley Argent and her son James. Picture: David Kelly
B
eing labelled “just a mum’’ can be perceived as an insult but that’s all Shelley Argent OAM ever wanted to be. It’s a mantle the Brisbane mother of two has proudly used to help make history. Over the past 24 years, Shelley has become one of the most successful educators, advocates and lobbyists for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Australia. Her newly released autobiography – the aptly named Just a Mum – details eldest son James’s coming out, aged 17, in 1995. The world was in the grip of the AIDS crisis, fear and ignorance were rife, and the only right James had in Queensland was to be gay without fear of arrest. Shelley was determined both James and his straight brother Glenn would be treated equally by the law and society. She became the first parent to volunteer for the Queensland AIDS Council, reinvigorated Brisbane’s chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and set out to remind politicians that members of the LGBTIQ community had parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles who loved them – and who voted. Her fight as Queensland president and national spokesperson for PFLAG to ensure state and federal policy and legislative reform, culminating with marriage equality in 2017, has been well documented by the media – including by myself, in the pages of The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail newspapers. “My message has always been simple – we have to love and support our children for who they are. Sometimes as a parent you stand behind your child, sometimes you stand beside them, but this was my time to stand in front of James and fight for him,’’ says Shelley, 68. However, in Just a Mum, co-authored by myself, Shelley reveals the difficult circumstances and challenges which have shaped her and given her the strength and determination to pursue a career in advocacy.
Raised in a poor and dysfunctional family in conservative 1950s Brisbane, Shelley ditched school for retail jobs until she realised the dream of a family of her own with husband of 45 years, Don. From infertility to postnatal depression, child sexual abuse to mental health battles, volunteering at school to starting a uni degree at 45 and living with a chronic, incurable illness, Shelley deals with some difficult themes with candour, compassion and humour. “My only motivation in embarking on this book is to show people it doesn’t matter how humble your beginnings, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. “Over the years, so many people have said, ‘Oh, I couldn’t do what you do’ – what rubbish! I am not special. I am just a mum from the suburbs who saw a wrong and did what I could to fix it. I embarked on these challenges because this was important to me,’’ says Shelley, who lives at The Gap. James is a paramedic in London, while Glenn is a businessman in Singapore. “As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter where you come from, but where you’re going that matters. And I’ve been to some amazing places, met some wonderful people and made lots of great friends.’’ Her national book launch has been met with great reviews, but Shelley’s still hard at work. She’s just spent several days in Canberra, meeting with MPs about proposed religious freedom reforms. “So much has changed in the past 24 years but PFLAG is still as relevant as ever. When I first went into the community, five people died every week from AIDS and now it’s considered an inconvenient STI. People’s attitudes have changed from shame and blame and guilt and fear (to acceptance and pride); and young people are coming out earlier and earlier, and parents are looking for support for their child, not themselves so much,’’ she says. LIFE
Brooke Falvey Let’s face it, life isn’t sunshine and rainbows all the time. Sometimes, it’s bloody hard. Like pushing a pram uphill with an elephant on your back We need to talk. Four little words. They’re ominous and they’re scary, but their message is so bloody important, just not in the way you’re probably thinking. Today’s world is a busy one; time is short, moments are fleeting and communication comes in hundreds of forms. We tweet, text, like and email. We use Snapchat, Facebook, and WhatsApp. We send photos, videos and jokes. We communicate, but we don’t connect. It’s time to bring back the art of conversation; to ask a question and stop long enough to listen to the answer.
Every day we use “Hey, how are you?” as a greeting, but rarely do we hear the response. Instead, we assume the person we are asking is OK, that we would know if they weren’t. But that isn’t always the case; some people are pretty damn good at hiding their feelings, putting on a brave face and delving deep into the world of denial. Until it all comes crashing down. Anyone who has battled anxiety or depression will understand how hard it can be to admit that you’re doing it tough. No one wants to be thought of as a whinger. But it’s not whingeing; it’s talking and
it’s important. And let’s face it, life isn’t sunshine and rainbows all the time. Sometimes, it’s bloody hard. Like pushing a pram uphill with an elephant on your back and a storm cloud raining down on you. Good people are slipping through the cracks and something as simple as a meaningful, heartfelt conversation could pull them back. And for every well-publicised loss – Robin Williams, Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade – there are thousands of others; people whose deaths may not have made world news, but that doesn’t mean they
didn’t mean the world to someone. Sure, it can be tricky to know how to start a conversation with someone you know is doing it tough, but all you need to do is ask three little words, “Are you OK?” then listen to the answer. So today – and every day – take a moment, grab a cuppa, phone a friend or loved one and ask, “Are you OK?”. You won’t regret it, and you just might save a life. All the right moves Post-disaster, the city’s Port Office Hotel is back – and better than ever RESTAURANT Tony Harper
C
alves liver once frightened me as much as tetanus injections and those bits of dog business that regularly wedged under my school shoes. My grandmother cooked it like it was made from concrete and it ended up much the same ‌ grey, desert-dry and totally inedible. Years later my mother turned things around with slightly pink, bouncy, moist renditions that in the end made me love offal of all shapes and sizes. Which I still do. And there on the Port Office Hotel menu is a dish of calves liver and another of sweetbreads. Happy, happy days. The Port Office rendition ($26) is spot-on; just-pink, tender, served with broccolini, wee bits of diced bacon, devilled sauce and sweet-potato clapshot – it’s all quite British/Scottish, and not fussy or fiddled ‌ merely well crafted. It’s a big serve and I can’t do it justice but eating it is a cathartic experience; it washes away my culinary pretensions with its simple, grounded precision. Across the table is a rotisserie halfchook ($29, sourced from the Glass House Mountains) with a little pot of really good

gravy, some cos-based salad and fries with truffled mayo. The fries hardly get touched because we are on the chicken like a couple of hungry foxes. It’s terrific. Again simple, but done so, so well. It’s apparent that a fair bit of thought has been spent on the menu and it has plenty of crowd-pleasers. There are five steaks, lamb cutlets, duck breast ($36), bangers and mash (with Cumberland sausages no less) and plenty of seafood – chowder, bouillabaisse, fish and chips, scallops, calamari, bugs and a very, very tasty plate of WA Scampi with a Thai accented (kaffir lime and ginger) beurre blanc with a little Asian salad ($34). And then there are the bits of offal and a few slightly more eclectic bits and bobs. It toys with all sorts of food cultures, at times putting more than one on the same plate. But not without thought. It’s topnotch bistro fare with just enough quirk to keep things interesting.
The Port Office has been closed since January after a kitchen fire, and the dining room has been freshened up in a forced revamp. And, as always, the service is spot-on. There’s a solid wine list that has a very good collection of bottles from all parts of the globe and covering every price-point from $30 to several hundred. There’s some interesting stuff to be found – several barolos, Gruner Veltliner, a few cracking Queensland wines, burgundy (both red and white), Bordeaux and all sorts of other goodies. I’d love to see a few more interesting wines on the glass list, and a better collection of beers. Even so, it has to be one of the best drinks list in a Brisbane pub. And that is the crux: the Port Office is a pub with an offering that shames most of the others in town. I can’t think of another with the same imagination, thought and polish across the board.

RECIPE
Test of skill Here’s a dish to separate the good from the great, says chef Alastair McLeod There are certain dishes that show me how well a young chef can cook. Preparing a simple three-egg omelette is a test for any cook: perfection means no colour on the exterior and a barely set interior. Another apparently simple dish is a classic spaghetti aglio, olio e peperoncino. This Neapolitan dish of garlic, olive oil, chilli, spaghetti and parmesan relies on lots of little things done well to achieve a total that far exceeds the sum of its parts. If you can cook these dishes well, you start Monday!
TOMATO AND KING PRAWN LINGUINE Ingredients 375g squid ink linguine 4tbs extra virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 red chilli, seeded and finely chopped ¼tsp Aleppo chilli 20 king prawn cutlets, deveined 6 medium tomatoes, deseeded, finely chopped Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 2tbs chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 2tbs baby capers Method Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water for 2 mins less than is recommended on the packet directions. Drain, reserving cooking liquid. Return pasta to pan. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add garlic, fresh and dried chilli. Cook for 1 min, add prawns and cook for 2 mins, add tomato and 125ml of the cooking liquid. Cook for 2 mins or until heated through. Season and stir through parsley and capers. MOTHER’S FEARS … Annika Whiteley as Lola, and Noomi Rapace as the unhinged and desperate Lizzie, who has lost a daughter and can’t move on in Angel of Mine.
ANGEL OF MINE (MA15+) hhhjj Director Kim Farrant Starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Richard Roxburgh Swedish actor Noomi Rapace does “unhinged” with a level of commitment that’s hard to match. Her performance in this moody Australian thriller is so powerful, it throws the rest of the cast – and the world they inhabit – off balance. Perhaps the story would have benefited from a less naturalistic treatment; one more in keeping with the melodramatic nature of the plot. While The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s self-destructive tendencies were native to her Scandi-Noir landscape, they feel dangerously foreign to the suburban streets of Melbourne, where Angel of Mine is set. Even a mother’s grief has socially proscribed limits. But Lizzie (Rapace), who has been driven mad by the death of her infant daughter, doesn’t recognise them. Lizzie’s failure to “move on” has already cost her marriage (to Luke Evans). It’s about to see her lose custody of her only son (Finn Little), who is languishing in his sister’s shadow. Lizzie is so obsessed by child she lost, she neglects the one who has been left behind. Dropping him off at a classmate’s birthday party, she spots a young girl who she becomes convinced is her late daughter. At this point, her carefully medicated desperation spirals out of control. She begins to stalk Lola (Annika Whiteley), sneaking into her bedroom when nobody is watching, whisking her off for a boat ride while her parents are otherwise occupied, taking photographs of the unsuspecting child at the school gate. The rapaciousness of Lizzie’s
14 BRISBANE NEWS September 11-17, 2019
gaze is deeply unsettling. And there’s an inappropriate intimacy to her surreptitious sniffs of the child’s natural body odour. Forget bunny boilers, this feels so much worse. Her abject neediness is hard to endure. There is no way this can end well. Even Lizzie’s concerned mother (a Swedish-speaking Tracy Mann) and old-school psychiatrist (Mirko Grillini) have a bad feeling. At the opposite end of the maternal spectrum is Lola’s mother Claire (The Handmaid’s Tale’s Yvonne Strahovski), who is comfortable almost to the point of smugness. She’s got the pigeon pair, the husband, the swimming pool … but as Lizzie’s transgressions escalate, Claire reveals her own, hitherto unexpected dark side. As it turns out, the pair’s relationship is much more complex than it initially seems. But Angel Of Mine’s twist doesn’t carry as much emotional weight as it should. And that makes the resolution unsatisfying. Despite Rapace’s compelling performance, director Kim Farrant’s (Strangerland) remake of the 2008 French film L’Empreinte fails to add up to the sum of its parts. VICKY ROACH

Second coming James McAvoy has come a long way, from playing the English gent to being a major loser in the sequel to supernatural horror flick It Michele Manelis

ames McAvoy says he didn’t need to act scared for his scenes with Pennywise the killer clown in It Chapter Two. Just standing next to Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard in his full getup with white skin, flaming hair and demonic eyes was “pretty overwhelming”, according to the Golden Globe nominated Scottish actor. “It was unnerving just standing next to him,” McAvoy says. “And I don’t like clowns. I’ve never enjoyed the circus or clowns in general. The grotesque phoniness of it all with the way they paint their face I find really disconcerting and very suspicious. I don’t know who the people are who love clowns, that made them endure for centuries, millennia.” Considering the original 2017 movie (the 1990 version was a TV miniseries) raked in more than $1 billion on a $52 million budget, it would seem the premise of a child-killing clown is indeed a popular one, guaranteed to take audiences on a rollercoaster ride. Despite McAvoy’s aversion to clowns, he jumped at the chance to star in the sequel to last year’s adaptation of Stephen King’s best-selling novel. “I read It when I was 15 and loved it,” McAvoy says. “I read a lot of Stephen King novels actually – I’m a massive fan of his. So while I was filming the X-Men, Nick Hoult and I had gone to see the first instalment of It, and loved it, and then coincidentally, Jess (Chastain) told me that (director) Andy Muschietti (responsible for the original film) had me in mind for the role of Bill Denbrough. I told her to tell him I’d do it in a heartbeat.” Chapter Two picks up midway through King’s novel when The Losers’ Club, a tight-knit group of awkward preteens who bonded over their mutually horrific experiences with Pennywise (in the original film), reunite 27 years later to once again battle their shapeshifting nemesis. McAvoy’s Bill is the leader of the Losers, taking over the role from his younger self, played by Jaeden Martell. For Bill, the stakes are higher than for his peers, as he vows to avenge the death of his brother at the hands of Pennywise. In Chapter Two, Bill has become a successful mystery novelist and is married to a movie star, but also grapples with a speech impediment. “Certain words I had more trouble with than others,” says V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
TERROR TALE … James McAvoy (below) leads the Losers (main) in their battle with evil in It Chapter Two. Picture: Roadshow Films McAvoy of mastering the stutter. “I didn’t want it to be a rhythm where the audience would feel it coming. Predictability is never a good thing.” The Glaswegian actor also did a lot of the heavy lifting when it came to the physicality of the movie. As head Loser, he led other newcomers to the franchise: Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Andy Bean. “I’m 40 now, and when we were filming last year, I realised that I don’t heal as quickly as I used to. I was already nursing a case of tendinitis of the knee and I had a scene where I had to run and run with rocks smashing down, and I kept smashing my knee on the ground. And Andy loves to do many takes. So I ended up being much more of a stuntman that I anticipated. “But I usually sacrifice my body in movies where I’d just take the hit, be sore, and in a week you’re fine.” He shakes his head. “Well, that’s not the case anymore.” James’s most notable roles include the mutant Professor Charles Xavier in the recently concluded X-Men franchise, as well as playing a monster with multiple personalities in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and its sequel from this year, Glass. But he started out like many young British actors, in period including Becoming Jane and Atonement. “Yes, when I was coming up, I was doing those Englishy movies, but the

thing that broke me more than anything was The Last King of Scotland,” he says of the historical drama that won a Best Actor Oscar for Forest Whitaker as despot Idi Amin. “And I’ve been fortunate to do a lot of variety, so I haven’t been stereotyped. I’ve never predicted where my career will take me, but after doing Split, Glass, X-Men, and this, maybe I’d like to do something a bit more normal,” he laughs. “The kind of movie where people chat with each other for more than one page of dialogue.” The 2017 film still ranks as highest-ever opening weekend for an original horror movie in the US, with a mighty $180 million, demonstrating the power of fear to propel the box office. But for McAvoy, It Chapter Two isn’t merely an escapist thrill ride. “It’s as much a coming-of-age story about a bunch of people who have suffered trauma, either through loss or physical or psychological abuse, and overcoming that by finding kinship and friendship,” he says. “It’s not just a horror movie.” Having performed such an emotionally and physically taxing role as Bill, how did James unwind after the shoot? “I go back home (to London) and be a dad,” he says of son Brendan, 9, whom he shares with ex-wife Anne-Marie Duff. Digital landscape Sam Leach is no stranger to controversy and in an interesting move has used technology to help the creative process Phil Brown Using a computer to assist in the creation of an artwork begs a rather obvious question. And it’s a question I have to ask Sam Leach, winner of this year’s Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize. Leach, an Archibald and Wynne Prize winner, won the $30,000 prize for his painting Deep Convolutional Landscape, a work that references colonial art, created by sifting images through a computer. Thankfully the final result was actually 16 BRISBANE NEWS September 11-17, 2019
painted by the artist. “It’s amazing what a human and a computer can do working together,” Sam says. “This painting was composed using a form of Artificial Intelligence known as Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network. This is a type of algorithm with two components. One part generates an image and the other compares the image to a database of source images to determine if it belongs in the original set. “Both parts of the algorithm compete
with each other to improve over thousands of iterations. This work draws on a data set of early colonial paintings by McCubbin, Glover and von Guerard, effectively showing the computer’s interpretation of the early European gaze in Australia.” But do we need to know all that or can we just enjoy the painting on its own merits without the backstory? Either way, the judges certainly liked it. The panel consisted of Peter McKay, curatorial manager of Australian art at QAGOMA, Dr Campbell Gray, director of the UQ Art Museum, artist Ann Thomson and Tattersall’s Club member Stuart Waddington. They also liked Alan Jones’ painting (no, not that Alan Jones!) Painting 236 (Mike Kenny Oval) and it was highly commended. Melissa Egan’s Resting Place which depicts the old Priscilla Queen of The Desert bus deserted on the outskirts of Coober Pedy. “Outside an underground Serbian church rests the iconic Priscilla
bus in all her glory highlighting the strange juxtaposition of morality and vice pervading this unusual town,” Melissa says in her artist’s statement. This year’s prize encompasses an embarrassment of riches. It’s invitational and the club has invited some of the country’s best artists to enter which means it’s a strong field and that, frankly, many other works could also have won. It’s the 30th year for the prize and the last year for retiring art prize curator Bernie Hollett and we should dip our lids to Bernie for a job well done. She has helped shape the prize into one of the country’s most coveted art prizes. Do go and see this year’s because there are many treats, too many to mention here. But I should say Jun Chen’s Through The Bush is terrific. Tattersall’s Club and Mercedes-Benz Toowong Landscape Art Prize, until Sep 20, Riverside Centre, 123 Eagle St, city. tattersallsclub.com.au

I love the way small spaces seem to bring people together
Hidden depths A tiny worker’s cottage in Petrie Terrace annexes extra space by carving out cool new living rooms underneath MIchelle Bailey

iving in London convinced architect Stephanie Skyring that living “small” could really work anywhere. “I grew up in suburban Brisbane but after London it was a more urban life that I was drawn to,” Stephanie says. “I love the way small spaces seem to bring people together.” Stephanie found her place of intersection, between her Brisbane childhood and experience abroad, in the enclave of Petrie Terrace with a workers’ cottage measuring just six by eight metres. “After I bought the place I was quite surprised to hear from the previous owner that seven children had been raised here,” Stephanie says. “There were just four rooms, not even a corridor, and a lean-to at
the back. Nothing could be demolished because the house predates 1910.” When Stephanie was pregnant with her daughter, Maeve, she and husband Michael embarked on the process of renovation. Fashioning a nursery was an obvious necessity but more important for Stephanie was determining an architectural approach that was sensitive to the original cottage and engaged sustainable design principles. Her deep respect for the neighbourhood and streetscape directed the first moves. “I loved the humble street elevation of the cottage,” Stephanie says. “I knew if we made it double storey at the front, it would lose its tinyness. So we V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

decided to be very efficient to maximise spaces in the front of the cottage under the existing roof.” The front veranda was preserved and front rooms enclosed to create modest bedrooms either side of a central corridor. Beside the old fireplace a small sitting room was made and next to this a staircase was built to connect to new areas downstairs. Beyond the original cottage, the building was extended to accommodate a master bedroom and dressing room with a study loft above, accessible by ladder. Harnessing the once vacant cottage undercroft was key to accommodating the social spaces of the household. “I wanted to retain the feeling of the V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
open under-house space, especially in summer when we can get breezes down here and it’s the coolest space in the house,” Stephanie says. “In the first iteration we kept all the living upstairs and put all the bedrooms downstairs but we realised that’s not how we wanted to live. “We wanted the living areas to connect to the garden.” A combination of sliding doors, bi-folding doors and double-hung windows open interior spaces to a narrow garden running along the eastern edge of the house and a small lawn at the southern end. All of these openings can be tuned to attract the breeze and can be shaded to
manage sunlight and heat gain. “Your room is only as big as you can open it out to,” Stephanie says. “So if you can connect to the garden and open to the garden, the room will feel that big.” The light-filled and breezy spaces of the interior are further enhanced by the cool generated by the concrete floor. “A lot of the design was driven by sustainability and passive cooling was a big part of this,” Stephanie says. “Brisbane has a ground temperature of 23C so when you put a concrete slab on the ground and keep that slab shaded, you can effectively maintain a temperature of 23C. It works like airconditioning, but costs nothing.”
Being both cost efficient and spatially efficient were key to resolving the architecture. “People often wonder how they can get the cost of building down,” Stephanie says. “Well the easiest way is to build less – make a smaller house. But in doing that you need to be clever about making those spaces work harder. “You need spaces to be adaptable, to suit a variety of situations and natural light is critical. If you can get the right amount of light and connect to the garden, your space will feel infinitely larger.” Architect: Stephanie Skyring, skyringarchitects.com.au Photography: Lara Masselos

Phil Brown It’s the simple things in life that give me pleasure. Oh yes, the luxury hotels and the chauffeur-driven limos are OK too, but that’s beside the point A few people asked me what I did for Father’s Day and I told them. I went out and bought a suitcase. How exciting is that? The funny thing is, however, that for me that was exciting. And it was what I wanted to do. We went into the city to do that because Myer was having a sale and I prefer shopping in the city. I get a little claustrophobic in some of those suburban shopping malls. We began with our customary coffee at Marchetti Cafe in the Tattersall’s Arcade, my field office downtown. Then we wandered up to Myer and started browsing through the luggage section. I had to get a new suitcase because my
old one broke during my trip to Russia in February. That was a drama. I was leaving for the airport in one hour, went to close my suitcase and the zip just tore off, rendering the suitcase unusable. I rushed downstairs and got a bellhop to take me to a nearby luggage shop, bought the cheapest suitcase I could, threw all my stuff in it and closed it just as the limo to the airport arrived. That suitcase wasn’t too flash though, so I got rid of it in a recent council kerbside collection. I put the suitcase outside, walked up the stairs and into the house. Five minutes later I went to the window, looked outside and it was gone. So whoever has it ... I hope you enjoy my

Russian suitcase. Anyway, I have a new, Samsonite one now and I can’t tell you how much pleasure I had buying it. Walking down the mall wheeling it beside me I pondered on how easily pleased I was. For me it’s the simple things in life that give me pleasure. Oh yes, the luxury hotels and the chauffeur-driven limos are OK too, but that’s beside the point. Shopping in the city in Brisbane is one of the little pleasures in life. After a busy week, it’s nice to just have a coffee and browse the shops. Some people rush off to the country on weekends and, once upon a time, we would make forays to the beach. But lately we’ve done a lot of hanging around town
and enjoy it. I might replace a few light bulbs at home, do a bit of sweeping, rearrange my drawers, go for a nice walk in a nearby park in the late afternoon. These are simple pleasures but I manage to derive enormous pleasure from them. And going into the city to buy a suitcase on Father’s Day was enough for me. My wife and son did give me a voucher, too, which I spent on a new black polo shirt after my suitcase purchase. I got 40 per cent off the suitcase, too, by the way, which made it all the sweeter. I guess you could say my life really is now like Seinfeld, which is, supposedly, a show about nothing.

The other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, and there’s further entertainment space with a lounge room and sunroom/music room.
Family luxury There’s an array of features to this luxury five-bedroom property that makes it ideal for family living. Set about 900m from Eagle Farm racecourse, the contemporary-style house has a spacious two-level floorplan with multiple living and entertainment spaces, including an inground pool. Beyond a traditional facade, the main entry leads down a central hallway with built-in bench seating. To the left, there’s a bedroom with a separate outdoor entrance, and a formal family room with barn-style timber doors, and access on two sides to a patio, the yard and the pool. Back inside, the rear of the floorplan opens to the main living and dining area hub, where the decor features soaring coffered ceilings, limestone flooring, and a gas fireplace. The galley kitchen overlooks this space and offers an impressive list of appliances. The island bench and breakfast bar has a 40mm colonial white granite finish, and there is also a butler’s pantry.
