The district of Hoshiarpur produces
dark tali sheesham furniture with beautifully detailed dense foliage patterns that are both engraved and inlaid with acrylic, camel bone and shell. The motifs are either of persian origin or adaptions of the exquiste wood carving in the havelis, mansions, of Hoshiarpur.
The Punja Dhurrie is a flat woven rug.
In the post-independence Punjab, it has been connected with the Punjabi concept of dowry that includes items of bedding. Although the craft was practiced in most rural areas of Punjab, it has become a domestic industry on a commercial scale after immigrant weavers from Sailkot and Pakistan arrived at Nakodar, Noormahal and the villages around.
The Phulkari is a traditional handmade
embroidery, practice originated by the women of Punjab (North-west India & Pakistan) during the 19th century. As the name suggests, Phulkari means ‘flower work’. In the past, ladies of the neighbourhood would gather in their leisure time to create beautiful works with the silk threads. This craft has now grown from a simple cottage industry to being a full-grown industry.
The Punjabi Jutti is a traditional
footwear, characterised by a curled upturned toe and has an intricate embroidery, which still is executed completely by hand. In the past, embroidery was done in pure gold and silver wires, covering the entire surface of the pair. In this cottage industry craft, the cutting and stitching is done by men while the women embroider the uppers.

The walk through the Arts and Crafts’ Street is a depiction of the physical connection between the rural and the urban Punjab. Roads linking the city and the villages are often lined with rows of Eaucalptus trees and the podium here is a symbolic representation of that transition. The idea of the centre is to bring the rural craftsmen into the urban space to raise awareness. The podium suggests the link.

‘Making the crafts available to the public’ The purpose of the centre is not only to raise
awareness about the tangible heritage of Punjab through display or demonstration of
the making but also to influence people to
purchase the crafts for their use, encouraging the hardwork of artisans and craftsmen. The
centre has been designed to contain a public plaza at the entrance from the Namdev Chowk which also transforms into a Crafts Haat where the craftsmen can sell their works.
‘A Place for All’ Apart from educating people about the culture of Punjab, invigorating the dying crafts,
Virsa Vihar also serves as a general place of interaction
