St Brendan’s Sixth Form College
S
T Brendan’s class of 2016 achieved the Sixth Form College’s best ever A-level results this year. It is the largest Sixth Form College in the Bristol-Bath-South Gloucestershire region, and has supported 635 students through their A-levels over the past two years. This year St Brendan’s A-level pass rate is an impressive 97.4% with 69.3% of students achieving A*-C grades in their exams. St Brendan’s provides students with a huge choice of 47 different A-level courses, and this year 26 of those subjects are boasting a 100% pass rate. Vocational (BTEC) results were equally impressive with 100% pass rate, and the Extended Project Qualification (aimed at students who want to stretch their curriculum) also achieved 100% pass rate. Principal of St Brendan’s, Michael Jaffrain said: “This is another fantastic year of results across the board, with our BTEC courses retaining their 100% pass rate and our A-levels having improved again for the third year in a row. “We are proud of the fact that 80% of our Oxbridge candidates have been successful in obtaining their university places and we wish them luck with their exciting futures which lay ahead of them. “I want to say a massive congratulations to all our students and to

■ Rhi Coath got an A* chemistry – despite battling with repetitive strain injury ahead of sitting her exams. Rhi, 18, of Windmill Hill ripped open her results envelope to find an A*in chemistry, A in maths and a B in physics and celebrated by going for a picnic with friends. IX years ago Lauren Pratt was told by doctors she would die. The then 12-year-old girl had a brain tumour the size of an orange in the back of her head, and she needed surgery urgently. But she overcame the odds and collected straight A* grades last week. The Hanham schoolgirl is set to embark on an adventure as well, teaching English to underprivileged children in China – and is then setting her sights on a place at Cambridge University. She scored top marks in Business Studies, Media and English Language, but life has not always been easy for the John Cabot Academy pupil. Lauren started going to her GP with severe headaches and vomiting when she turned nine, but doctors could not diagnose why. But a week after she turned 12, the pain got so bad her mum took her to the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Doctors sent her for an MRI scan, worried it could be more sinister. And it turned out to be. They found a brain tumour the size of an orange in the back of her head, and prepared her for surgery the next day. A nurse told Lauren’s parents they had to operate immediately, or she would only have six
weeks to live. Sending her to Frenchay Hospital for the surgery, the young girl woke up from her surgery blind and deaf. “I was so scared, I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “It was incredibly scary. But the senses soon started coming back, but I was having problems with my speech and my writing, and I couldn’t walk properly.” She slowly started going back to school. Writing five essays every night, she started getting used to putting sentences together again and began moving up the grades. “I couldn’t really understand what was going on. It was really hard at that age to work out what was going on,” she said. “To experience that at such a young age just drove me on to do better, and from then, I knew I could kick on.” And kick on she did, eventually becoming a top student in school, even if she struggled with walking and writing. Lauren now in Beijing for a 10-month stint teaching English to Chinese children, before coming back to go to university. “I am then going to come back and do a linguistics degree at university. Now I have my grades I don’t know what to do. “I think I will apply to Cambridge next year. We’ll see what happens.” Meanwhile, Sophia Hazelby, 18, also battled back to gain top marks despite being diagnosed with a serious respiratory tract issue during her studies. Sophia was awarded an A* and two As at the Red Maids Girls School.
ONE of the oldest girls schools in the UK posted brilliant grades again. At Red Maids’ School, which is merging with Redland High this September, 37 per cent of students achieved the top grades. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress at the Westbury-on-Trym based school, said: “These results are tremendous. They are the result of much hard work and determination by
our students, coupled with expert tuition and support by our teachers. “The difference of a Red Maids’ education is the progress that we are able to achieve in our students, enabling them to realise their full potential. “I am delighted for every single one of our girls today, they have made themselves and the whole school very proud.”

Clifton High School
M
ALE students at Clifton High School have matched the A and AS level performance of its successful young women – a testimony to the success of the school’s ‘Diamond Model’ of education. When Clifton High School became coeducational in 2009, welcoming boys into the Senior School for the first time, this model was adopted in response to persuasive evidence that at key stages in their education, boys and girls learn differently. The philosophy behind this initiative has been extended across the school. An awareness of the different learning methods suited to boys and girls and the resulting adaptations and developments in our teaching practices are now embedded in the School’s approach to teaching and learning. When schools become co-educational, evidence shows that results in public examinations dip as a consequence. However, the cohort of boys who last week received their AS and A Level results have evidently benefitted from Clifton High School’s distinctive approach to education and have bucked the national trend. Clifton High School has an excellent reputation for its emphasis not only on academic success, but on achievement in the broader context. Dr Alison Neill, Head of Clifton High School, said: “Students who left us this summer have grown into mature and

and we are confident that they have acquired skills and competencies which will serve them well. “They have been involved in all aspects of life at Clifton High School and their exceptional contribution and influence will remain with us. “We are proud of all our students
and their achievements.” At AS level in particular, Clifton High School students have excelled across the board with a marked improvement over last year – in particular in the number of top grades, an impressive increase of 7%. ●20% of AS students achieved max-
imum UMS points in at least one module of their subjects. ●80% of students who applied to university have been offered their first choice, and 75% of these have gone to Russell Group universities. Dr Neill added: “Our students who have opted to take a year out to pursue other areas of interests have, as befits a Clifton High School student, approached their plans with originality, imagination and altruism. There are exciting times ahead for all our young men and women and we wish them every success.”

AITING for results can be a hugely stressful for students and families. The relief when your child has been successful in achieving the grades they hoped for can relax tension within many households. Although education is about much more that examination success, one cannot ignore the importance of gaining good grades when the competition for higher education places, in well-established universities, is so intense. It is also important that students achieve grades that reflect their ability and of which they are proud. Having established A Level provision three years ago, “Areté at St Bede’s” is quickly establishing itself as a new and credible post 16
centre. Our ambition has always been to translate the outstanding learning experience which exists in the main school into post 16. The results this year are evidence that this has been achieved. The challenge for us now is to build on this record and ensure excellence is built to last. Young people in Bristol today are better served than they have been in decades. They can choose between a diverse range of excellent post 16 providers. It is important that they choose the right place of learning and that we support them with their decision. Students who are happy at school will excel and walk tall. - Catherine Hughes. Principal of St Bede’s Catholic College, Bristol.

RISTOL Cathedral Choir School students are celebrating the best A-level results the academy has ever seen, with 70 per cent of all A-levels taken receiving A*-B grades. OST young people that have just received their A Level results are now busy getting ready to start university or work, or set off on their gap year travels. But for one Bristol student, the next year will be spent fighting poverty in one of the poorest countries in the world. Celeste Mehrabi, 18, will shortly be travelling to Cambodia to promote access to good education for children in rural communities. The former Bristol Cathedral Choir School student is volunteering through the UK Government funded International Citizen Service (ICS). No two placements are the same with ICS. Work can involve anything from building latrines to working with young entrepreneurs to build their businesses from scratch. Celeste said: “I applied for ICS to

build confidence and communication skills, and to gain real experience in international development and working first hand with a charity. I’m really eager to get out in the world to experience different cultures and work with disadvantaged communities. “I'm still unsure about attending university, so I’m hoping to gain experience to allow me to jump a step and develop a career in international development.” Celeste is just one of the English volunteers who will be volunteering this year through ICS – a programme which has seen nearly 10,000 young people from England go overseas since 2012. Placements offer young people the opportunity to gain the skills employers and universities love, such as team work, leadership and project management, while experiencing an-
other culture and making a real difference. The scheme is open to anyone aged 18 to 25, with or without qualifications – and volunteers don’t have to pay a penny. Felicity Kendall, Director of ICS, said: “Young people leaving school or college can find themselves under a lot of pressure to figure out what’s next. Volunteering abroad can be a great opportunity to experience another culture and gain skills that will set you up for future challenges. “All ICS projects are part of properly planned, long-term development programmes, so you’ll know you’re making a difference at the same time as building your CV – and you’ll have an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.” To find out more about ICS or to apply, visit www.volunteerics.org.
