BRISTOL BUCKS THE NATIONAL TREND ■ TOP GCSE grades fell nationally this year – but in Bristol most schools bucked the trend, with many posting their best ever results. Provisional results show more than 60 per cent achieved a C or better in English and Maths, the new baseline for schools. That was a four per cent increase from last year’s results. Some of the top success stories came from South Bristol, where schools are faced with the challenge of helping pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. At Bridge Learning Campus, their results more than doubled from 21 per cent last year. In Bedminster Down, English scores above C was 86 per cent, among the best in the city. And Oasis Academy John Williams also recorded outstanding grades this year, with 66 per cent achieving A* to C in English and Maths, up 13 per cent from last year. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “First and foremost, success belongs to the students collecting their results today and I’d like to congratulate our young people on the hard work they have put in, whatever the outcome. “Our schools are working together to narrow the achievement gap, so that every 16 year old is able to achieve the very best they can, enabling them to take part in the

success of our city. As a Learning City Partnership we share a common vision – teachers, education leaders, employers – that by working together we can create a fairer city for young people.” Currently 95 per cent of the city’s secondary schools are rated as Good or Outstanding by OFSTED, compared to the national average of 76 per cent. Results are all provisional until they are confirmed later in October, but across the city there are some great success stories of schools and students who have done well. Schools in South Gloucestershire were also celebrating significant improvements in their GCSE results. 57 per cent of students in South Gloucestershire have achieved 5 GCSE A*-C grades including English and mathematics an improvement of more than 4 per cent from 2015. Eight schools have achieved improvements over 10 per cent compared with last year’s results. This is the last year in which GCSE results are scored with grades A* to G. From next summer, pupils will take reformed courses in English language, English literature and maths, marked with numbers from 9 for the top-performing students down to 1 for those who have struggled. The changes will be rolled out across another 17 subjects by summer 2018.

Churchill Academy & Sixth Form

S

TUDENTS at Churchill Academy and Sixth Form celebrated first-class GCSE results, with 68 per cent of students achieving A*-C grades in English and maths – an improvement of 7 per cent on last year’s results. 22 per cent of grades achieved were A*-A, and overall students achieved an average of a grade B across their best 8 subjects. Hanna Whydle, outgoing House Captain for Hanover House, was celebrating ten A* grades, an A and a B. She also achieved a unique A^ grade (A* with Distinction) in GCSE further maths, showing that her marks were beyond an A* grade. Hanna said: “I wasn’t really that nervous. As long as I got two Bs in science I was happy.” She will be studying biology, chemistry, maths and further maths at Sixth Form. Tom Howarth, Sophie Parsons and Hannah Gray achieved twelve A and A* grades each, whilst a further fourteen students achieved ten or more A or A* grades: Lauryn Maine, Charlotte Eyres, Nina Halper, Becky Fews, Lucy Nolan, Lucy Buncombe, Rosie

Kirkpatrick, Hannah Anderson, Ben Webber, Natasha Whittock, Oceanne Shears, Caoimhe Wahab, Matteo Guccione and Edward Alton. Head teacher Chris Hildrew said: “The students are right to celebrate their well-deserved success. Since I joined the Academy in January I have been impressed by their hard work, and the way the students have taken responsibility for their own learning. “I must also pay tribute to the excellent teaching they have received from our outstanding staff throughout their time at the academy. I look forward to the student’s continued success, as the majority of them go on to continue their studies in our sixth form.” Outstanding subject performances included catering, with a staggering 93 per cent of students achieving grades A*-C; and English literature

and economics (both with 86 per cent A*-C). Over 80 per cent of students taking ICT, music, religious studies and business studies achieved A*-C grades. Overall, 78 per cent of students achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A*-C. “These high achievements in practical and academic subjects show the balanced curriculum on offer here at Churchill, where success doesn’t mean narrowing down options or choices,” added Mr Hildrew. This success at GCSE comes just a week after the Academy saw excellent A-level results from its on-site sixth form provision. Students will return in September to see work already underway on the academy’s new £1.3m Business Studies and Computing facility, which is due to open in March 2017.

KB Academy, a small secondary school specialising in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, opened in September 2015. A unique feature is its links with employers; younger students do a day’s work experience every fortnight and sixth-formers a day a week. The academy is fostering strong relationships with workplaces including Buro Happold, Kier, Arup, Hartwell Jaguar, Atkins and the Ministry of Defence. Named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the academy is housed in a £3.4 million building that would impress even the great engineer himself, with state-of-the-art facilities. It is situated alongside Wellsway School,

CARE which means its students have access to courses and after-school activities there as well as benefiting from the small classes and personal coaching at IKB. Principal Debbie Gibbs says: “IKB is not an easy option. It is challenging and we set high target grades, but students who have a passion for STEM subjects and are willing to put in the effort will have a rich and valuable experience.” Students can join IKB at Year 10 or Year 12. Transport can be arranged from surrounding areas. IKB is part of the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust and will grow to a maximum of 300 students.

Sir Bernard Lovell Academy

S

IR Bernard Lovell’s achievements in designing the space telescope at Jodrell Bank were made possible through ambition and positive endeavour. The school which takes his name aims to follow his example: building a learning environment that can equip students well for life in the 21st century. Sir Bernard Lovell Academy aims to give every individual the chance to achieve beyond their dreams. Its students are playing a major part in shaping the academy’s future. They recently engaged in a project to identify the school’s values – respect, equality, knowledge, individuality and teamwork. These are now at the heart of all that the school does. Principal Rupert Maule said, “We want our students to achieve the best possible qualifications, because we recognise that this will open many doors for them. We also know they need to develop personal qualities so they can make the most of these opportunities.” School staff are dedicated to providing a happy and supportive learning environment, high quality teaching and a rich curriculum. This is backed up by a wide variety of extra-curricular activities: performing arts, sports and outdoor pursuits are particularly strong at SBL.

Wellsway Sixth Form

W

ELLSWAY Sixth Form is one of the largest in the West of England and attracts an increasing number of students from other schools as well as welcoming back its own students after GCSEs. Its size means it can offer an extensive range of courses that enable young people to follow their aspirations and exceed expectations. Many win places at leading universities. The school has a deserved reputation for outstanding academic performance thanks to its high quality teaching, rich curriculum and excellent facilities on a spacious site. However, it recognises that achievement can come in many forms, not simply exam results. Wellsway offers a host of opportunities for

students within and outside lessons, including sports, arts, music and volunteering. This enables young people to assume responsibility, build relationships and develop confidence for their next steps in life. A key feature is the extremely strong pastoral support and personalised career guidance for every individual throughout their time at Wellsway Sixth, taking them to the next level. As an inclusive school, Wellsway offers a range of pathways including vocational routes. The growth of the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust will offer yet more outstanding opportunities through collaboration with the Post-16 departments in the partner schools.

OWNEND School is an exciting and vibrant learning community where every young person is supported to achieve their very best. Downend School has seen significant improvements in GCSE and A-level results over recent years, making the school one of the most improved in the area. Its sixth form has achieved some of the best A-level results of all the schools in South Gloucestershire over the past three years. The school has undergone substantial refurbishment in recent years, with the opening of a new IT Hub, Inclusion Centre and Innovation Centre. This summer, the school completely refurbished its Dining Hall, Library and Sixth Form Centre. Recently the school has become a member of the Premium Partners scheme in order to develop close links between the school and local business.

“ Downend School’s sixth

form has achieved some of the best A-level results of all the schools in South Gloucestershire over the past three years.”

In September 2014, Ofsted recognised the strength of Downend School, awarding a “good” judgement in every area inspected. They noted that “teachers have high expectations” and that “students’ attitudes to

learning are good and they conduct themselves well around the school”. Inspectors also praised “an aspirational culture throughout the school”. The school runs a large number of extra-curricular activities, including an award winning film club, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and various local/national engineering competitions.

● Downend School’s open evening takes place on Thursday, September 22 from 5.45pm until 8pm. The school is also holding open mornings daily from September 26 to October 20 (9am until 10.30am) when the head teacher will personally show parents and students around the school and answer any individual questions. Head of school Paul Atkins said: “Our students and teachers deserve to be congratulated for all their brilliant work contributing to another excellent set of GCSE results. “This performance builds not only on our record GCSE results last year, which showed the highest state school attainment in the city, but also on the ‘outstanding’ Ofsted judgement this February, when inspectors described achievement at our school as ‘exceptional’. “It truly has been a golden year.” He added: “Even more important than the headline figures is the evidence of progress made by our students that is significantly above the national average, regardless of their widely ranging academic starting points when they entered the academy in Year Seven. The levels of progress in English and mathematics, in particular, continue to be outstanding by any measure.”

Colston’s School

W

ITH nearly 20 per cent of GCSEs being awarded the prestigious A* grade, and 96 per cent of students achieving five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, there was much to celebrate at Colston’s on GCSE results’ day. One in five candidates achieved the equivalent of straight A grades or better, and 73 per cent achieved five or more grades at A* to B. Headmaster Jeremy McCullough said: “With results as good as these it is easy to overlook the holistic nature of Colston’s. It is really in the individuals’ stories that the excitement is to be found: The B that might have been a C were it not for the extra support offered, or the A* that was, frankly, never even dreamed possible. Our GCSE candidates, and their teachers, have worked very hard and are delighted with the outcomes.” “Naturally, Laura Baxter, Ryan Danvers, Jonathan Dobson, Ben Fisher, Max Garland, Abigail Langbridge, Matt Plenty, Sophie Reed and Lucy Xu will get much of the plaudits for their exclusively A* and A grades, but many others also deserve huge congratulations for doing their best and achieving great grades. We are very proud of them all.”

T Mangotsfield School we are committed to ensuring that every student reaches their full potential. Our ethos can be summed up in three words: Community-Achievement-Growth. We seek to be a community school where all understand and can shape our ethos together. We aspire that all our students are ambitious to achieve. We seek to provide the very best learning experience, so that every student makes good progress, regardless of their starting point. Mangotsfield School is undergoing a huge period of change. From September 2016, we are introducing a number of changes - designed to promote a culture of high standards and expectations. Students were involved in choosing a more traditional uniform, and we are moving towards a House System, which will be the vehicle to develop exciting challenges, competitions, and new roles for our students. In addition, we have introduced Vertical Tutoring: year groups are mixed, allowing for more of a ‘family’ approach to mentoring. This past year the school has undertaken a dramatic building and refurbishment pro-

gramme, this summer creating a new visitor reception and updating the oldest part of the school, to give our students the best possible environment for study. Over the school year we completely refurbished the Hall, a new Leadership Hub and our Sixth Form Centre. Mangotsfield School prides itself on the diversity of extracurricular opportunities that students are able to access. The extracurricular offer varies in its diversity from our Duke of Edinburgh scheme to our Photography Club, from the Engineering and Art clubs to the wide range of sports teams who successfully compete in local and national competitions.

● Mangotsfield School’s open evening takes place on Monday, September 12, from 5.30pm until 8pm. COLSTON’S GIRLS’ SCHOOL

CLIFTON COLLEGE

■ Students of all abilities at Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol achieved better GCSE results in the 2016 exams than they could ever have imagined While the academy maintained its record of high overall passes at the top grades, it was the progress made by individuals that was most remarkable this year. When the Government publishes its new Progress 8 measures in the autumn, CGS expects to be among the best performers in the country. Its students achieved results that were more than half a grade higher than might have been expected from their starting points. Executive principal Alistair Perry said: “We are a non selective school, welcoming girls of all talents and from diverse backgrounds. It is very pleasing that exceptional progress reflected in these outcomes was not confined to the high achievers but was enjoyed by students across all abilities, and was significantly above the national average. “Well done to all the girls whose hard work has paid off - and thanks to our staff too.”

■ Six pupils were awarded straight A* grades among a year group that has achieved one of the best ever sets of results for Clifton College. In total, 25% of pupils achieved all A* or A grades, and there were plenty of smiling faces amongst the crowd as pupils finally found out the results of their hard work. Overall, 89% of grades were A* to B and 69% were A* or A grades. Departmentally, this year saw the best results ever for Economics, Physical Education and English Literature with 92, 91 and 74% A* or A respectively. In Biology, 100% of pupils achieved A* to B, with 89% A* to A for the fourth year running. Remarking on the GCSE results achieved by the pupils, Head of College Dr Tim Greene said: “The achievements and wide ranging ambitions of our pupils at GSCE level is testament to the hard work and dedication they’ve shown through what is at times a stressful period. “We wish everyone the very best for their next step, and look forward to welcoming many pupils back after the summer break to study for their A Levels here at Clifton College.”

■ 33-year-old mum of two Kathy, secured a C in Maths, which means she can now go to university. Kathy said: “studying at night school with two young kids is a challenge but I’m so glad I did it. I didn’t pay much attention at school so didn’t get the grades I needed for the career I wanted. I’ve been a nanny for 15 years but I’ve always wanted to work in Midwifery or Children’s Nursing. With the C in maths I can now go to university next year when the kids start school. Can’t wait!”
