DEAR FRIEND, Welcome to a season filled with passionate characters! Founding Director Susan D. Atkinson and I have assembled the 2015/16 Season— the theatre's 29th—which we know you will find funny, inspirational, and entertaining. These are characters you will care about and whose stories you will want to hear. They will take us on a journey from the wildly humorous, to the sometimes romantic, sometimes farcical, yet thought-provoking and exhilarating. Whether it’s William O. Douglas’ great love for the law and the Constitution in Mountain, the compassion and appreciation for humanity William Inge instills in Bo and Cherie in Bus Stop, or Don Quixote’s giving up “the burden of sanity…to sally forth into the world to right all wrongs” for the love of his imagined Dulcinea, it is the passion, charm, and courage of these characters that fascinate us. We are also proud to present award-winning playwright Julia Cho’s delightful and moving play The Language Archive, directed by Adam Immerwahr (from the McCarter Theatre) in his BRT directorial debut. And, with last season’s Lost in Yonkers, we saw Neil Simon in a serious mood. Now we bring you his one true farce, Rumors, where his only intention is to make us all howl with laughter. Looking forward also means looking back and the 2014/15 Season has been a smashing success. More people saw our Mainstage productions last season than any season in our history! Our success is thanks to you, our patrons. We’re here to make you think harder, feel more deeply, and laugh more joyfully. Join us for another theatrical voyage that is sure to keep you seriously entertained. Thank you.

by William Inge | Directed by Susan D. Atkinson
In this classic romantic comedy, a busload of travelers seek warmth and shelter when they are stranded at a Kansas diner waiting out a snowstorm. An undertow of sex, lies, and a touch of perversity are served to this motley crew, including a young loudmouthed cowboy bent on marrying a nightclub singer against her will, a pretentious professor, wise-cracking waitresses, and the peace-keeping sheriff, as they spend a night together filled with love, laughter, and heartache.
“… an uproarious romantic comedy that never strays from the truth.” –The New York Times
“A IDEA THAT AIN’T DANGEROUS...AIN’T WORTHY A BEIN’ CALLED AN IDEA AT ALL.
AND I WANTED TO BE DANGEROUS.”
Mountain
Nov by Douglas Scott | Directed by Susan D. Atkinson • Starring Keith Baker
William O. Douglas was one of the most accomplished and controversial justices ever to serve on the US Supreme Court. From his childhood in the Cascade Mountains to his accomplishments as a Yale law professor, chairman of the SEC, and as a defender of civil liberties, personal privacy, and the wilderness, he spent life on the edge as an outspoken maverick. But, as he lays on his deathbed, Douglas struggles to find the meaning of his life. Were the sacrifices—his fight against poverty and sickness as a youth, his failures as husband and father—worth making?

The Language Archive
by Julia Cho | Directed by Adam Immerwahr
In this lyrical, bittersweet comedy, George, a linguist consumed with preserving the dying languages of far-flung cultures, is losing his chance to preserve another language when its last two speakers refuse to talk to each other. Closer to home, though, language is failing him. He doesn’t know what to say to his wife, Mary, to keep her from leaving him, and he doesn’t recognize the deep feelings that his lab assistant, Emma, has for him. Is love a universal language or just a well-intentioned dream that leaves us all at a loss for words?
“The Language Archive is an elegant, graceful confection of a play…” –DC Theatre Scene

Hilarity abounds as guests arrive at the New York City Deputy Mayor’s townhouse to find the host has shot himself (though it’s only a flesh wound), his wife is missing, and there isn’t any food! The party guests are desperate to hush up the scandal, if that’s what it is, that surrounds their unseen host. As the confusion and miscommunication mount, the evening soon spins out of control in this non-stop laugh-out-loud Neil Simon farce.

Late Night Catechism Catechism classes are never as much fun—or as hilarious—as when they are led by Sister in the international hit comedy! Late Nite Catechism is an uproariously funny play that takes the audience back to their youth. The irrepressible Sister teaches class to a roomful of "students," rewarding them for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other nifty prizes. Naughty students may well find themselves on stage sitting in a corner reflecting on their actions. However, even the most reluctant "students" will be clamoring to get into this Sister's class!
