Emma Shepherd is a 2D animator/illustrator based in Bristol. She likes weightlifting, boxing, and dolls houses. Her greatest strengths are spirited character animation and engaging children’s book illustrations. Graduating with a BA (Hons) Animation in 2014, she has been working with clients since 2012, and has produced animations for Creatrix Marketing, a highly successful web design company. She aims to work in a Bristol animation studio, once she has finished illustrating a children’s book for author Diane Greenaway.

Explainer video for Heineken In 2013 I collaborated with Steve Millington on this explainer video for Creatrix Marketing, a web design company in Bristol. They had created a marketing research database that they wanted to sell to Heineken. I designed the look of the entire project myself. I also created all the Flash animations, which were then composited by Steve.

Show Me The Animation competition: February Show Me The Animation run a monthly ten second animation competition. My entry, The Lumberjack, won in February, giving me a chance to be the overall winner at the end of the year. It tells the (very) short story of a lumberjack who dreamed of ice-skating at Sochi.

Show Me The Animation competition: April I entered the competition again in April with Mission Impizzable, a ten second action extravaganza. Sadly I didn’t win, but recieved the highest ratings and most votes. Someone – or something – has broken into the high security bank, but what are they really after? And is it a foolish choice, or genius?

Collaborative Flash game A fellow university student, Fred Iles, has been making an online game called Hello World! It is a meditative and whimsical Flash game that allows you to explore space through the eyes of a child. I’ve been providing interactive and looped Flash animations. Multiple other creatives are contributing game components in their own style, giving the game a unique, collaborative feel.

Animated short Grumpy Girl is a twenty second short I made in my second year, after spending some time studying how children walk. This research accumulated in this film, where a little girl has fallen behind her mother and starts a tantrum. Seeing her angry mother coming back, she submits to being pulled along. It was a great exercise in showing a character thinking.

Children’s book for Diane Greenaway I’m currently illustrating a children’s book by the author Diane Greenaway. It is a series of short stories based around the iconic Star Ferries of Hong Kong. Anthropomorphising the boats in a way that appeals to children, is instantly recognisable as the boats, and fits the client’s tastes has been a difficult but rewarding challenge. The picture below is the first complete double spread, many more are soon to follow.

These portable playroom walls were a commissioned project for Caroline Gilbert, who was setting up a new playgroup called Kids Aloud. I painted four rooms; a kitchen, grocery store, tool shed, and doctors office. Associated children’s furniture and toys were arranged in each room for the children to play with.
