Biography

I grew up in Poole, Dorset, and I currently have just finished at University finishing my BA (Hons) Animation degree at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I completed my A-levels in July 2008, then following my interest in art in September 2008, I enrolled at the AUCB at Bournemouth. My foundation course influenced me to pursue my interest in Animation, specializing in stop-motion. I continued with my interest in Stop-Motion with a BA (Hons) Animation course at UWE Bristol in September 2009. I hope after university that I will have an opportunity to become a Art Director/Cinematographer/ Animator/After Effects specialist.

I also have an interest in music, I play a selection of instruments such as the piano, guitar, ukulele, and harmonica. The interest with music also helps with the composing and sound effects for the animations that I make. I also have a passion for photography, which also collaborates with the cinematography of my animations.

Basic Information

The majority of my projects are a variety of mixed medias of animation. I enjoy animation and different mediums that are available, and I am especially happy with my animations so far. Stop-motion My interests in stop-motion were first introduced at a young age, I have always loved the look and style of stop-motion. I decided that after I had completed my 2 years at sixth form to go to AUCB and study a foundation course. This is where I made my first animations, “Recycling“, and my first 2D animation “owls“. I am glad I have a variety of work to show, I will always enjoy the making and the designing of a stop-motion film.

2D Hand Drawn The Ryan Spendlove project “The Years Go By“ was a great opportunity for me animate for commision. I found it extremely useful, it made me realise the importance of understanding and time management. I am glad that I managed to complete the robin animation, as it has helped with the advertising of my name and my skills. VFX This the most recent skill that I have developed, I knew very little of after effects until my recent project “The Phinks In The Mist“. I have learnt so much about the software in the last six months, and those skills will develop.

Animations The Phinks In The Mist A self - directed stop motion film with pixilation, and after effects. This was a big challenge but I enjoyed it and I am happy with the final outcome.

Ryan Spendlove “The Years Go By“ I was lucky enough to be given a chance to animate a 2D hand drawn music video for the talented musician ‘Ryan Spendlove‘. I learnt a lot about commision, and also the time re-straint. I did enjoy this project, and it gave me an insight as to what it would be like as a freelancer for a career.

The Busker I was included in a short stop-motion team production for ‘The Busker‘. I enjoyed making the costumes for the puppet and the set design & building. I am proud to be part of this production.

Animations

Recycling This is the first stop motion film I made in my foundation year. I am proud of this piece as this gave me the confidence to carry on with animation, and specifically stop-motion. I found this animation was particually more time consuming than others that I have done, however I think my hard work paid off. The animation is also featured on the recycling website “Recycle More“, so I am glad that is still being watched, and hopefully the facts till are taken in.

Owls My first team production when I was studying at the Arts University of Bournemouth, our project was called “Portrait of a Person“. I really enjoyed this project I worked with two other talented animators & we managed to produce a fun and different animation.

Set Building She & Him Music Video I also made a few probs for the “She & Him Music Video. I ended up making some picture frames out of sculpey, in which I then had to design an illustration to put in them.

The busker was a fun stop-motion project I was part of with two other team members. I was in charge of the set design and making along with another team member. I made the bricks out of foam board, with scoring the sizes and making dents to give the realistic brick look. I also learnt a lot about lighting, the bricks were originally painted darker than shown in the photo, however when I put the set undercamera I realised that the colours had to be lighter in order for them to look realistic under camera. The making was my favourite part in this production, I also enjoyed the animation aspect of it, but I loved making a minuture world with my own creativity & team.

VFX Editing

The most challenging part of my final year at UWE Bristol was probably learning Adobe After Effects. I have never used After Effects before to an extent as I would be comfortable using it without any help. With help managed to learn a great deal about the program, and managed to make and complete a final film. These screen shots show samples of the making and editing within After Effects. Once I was used to using the software I didn’t come across any problems. I learnt a lot about the software, and that was one of my aims before finishing university, to learn more about After Effects. Now I am interested and keen to use this skill towards my career after university.

Set Building Below show the images of the set being built bit by bit, and the setting up in the studio. Bottom photos show the tie-downs for the trees.

The Phinks In the mist is another project that I worked on, my own self-directed project allowed me to design & make my own set. The images above show my rough drawings for the design of the turntable that I used in the animation.

G r a p h i c D e s i g n Wo r k

I made and created the front album cover for musician “Mike Youe“.

I designed and created my own contact cards, website, posters using Indesign, Photoshop.

Phinks Puppet Making

This shows the making and set up for the characters the “Phinks”, which are featured in the film “The Phinks in the Mist”. The characters were designed & made by Katarzyna Prujszczyk, I then animated the puppets on a lightbox using software to capture the images called “Dragonframe“.

Phinks Puppet Making This is how the puppets started, they were they simple, we decided to add arms to the creatures & put coloured material behind them for eyes. This idea came up when in out first year at UWE we had to design and make our own shadow puppets. We though this would be a nice small project aside & also another different media to use in my film “The Phinks In the Mist.

Puppet Costume Making

The final Busker coat that I made it was the hardest thing I had to make, and was my first attempt at making a tailcoat. I also had to The costumes designs & maquettes make the tail coat are shown above & below for the team animatable, and film “The Busker“. I really enjoyed ended up using being able to design the clothing & “Cinefoil” which making them, it really went well with is used for film the rest of the set. lighting.

The Busker puppet finished with its complete costume design. The whole puppet was really exciting to design and make, I did not build the armature, but I made all of the clothing for the puppet.

I also made the puppet clothing for a short stop motion film “Dead or Alive“ by David Burreddu.

Lighting These screen shots show the lighting of the film “The Phinks In The Mist“, another topic which I am interested in. I spent a lot of time testing the set and working out the right lighting, in fact too much time, I should have done more tests before starting the final animation.

The lighting in the busker film was more straight forward. As a team we managed to decide on the lighting very quickly, seeing as the alleyway scene was dark, and the desert scene was just as easy to light.

Cinematography

I am very interested in cinematography, which influences my photography and my animation. My interests in cinematography played a big part in my latest film “The Phinks In The Mist“, and I really wanted to make it more about the camera angles than the story itself. My photography is also important aswell, I always try to visualize whilst I’m out on location on how it will look when developed. I tend to consider the lighting, the layout, and other components thats are nescessary with photography & cinematography.

My own photography is shown belows, I tend to use film cameras rather than digitial. I prefer the waiting to see how the photos will develop, and I also get a different variety of texture and colours with my film cameras.
