The British Chamber Annual Ball 2016 Programme

Page 1

Welcome, everyone, to the Swinging 60s! Tonight you’ve got a ticket to ride into the heart of London – the undisputed capital of cool – where we’ve lined up a psychedelic feast for the senses. We know you’re all dedicated followers of fashion, so get ready to twist and shout on the dancefloor with The Beijing Beatles, a band guaranteed to make you want to strut your stuff and show off those classic costumes. But there’s a whole lot more. So sit back, turn on, tune in and get ready for one groovy evening, baby!

It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome all you party people on behalf of Jardines’ – one of the title sponsors of tonight’s fabulous event. I’m proud to represent both Jardines’ and the Chamber – two eminent organisations committed to the bright future of this dynamic city. As always, this evening promises to be filled with fabulous food, flamboyant fancy dress, unforgivable dance moves and general shenanigans. A great party needs a great cause and tonight we’re swinging in support of MINDSET – a Hong Kong charity working to increase understanding of mental health issues. So dig deep, get down and party like it’s 1960. Groovy, baby. A very warm welcome to this year’s Britcham Annual Ball. This year we take you to 1960s London, when the city was the beating heart of an exciting new youth-driven culture. It was the era of enigmatic names in music – The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream – in fashion – Mary Quant, Twiggy – and in lifestyle – the James Bond films and, of course, the Mini. We are thrilled to present you with an evening of good fun, good company and good food; a chance to show off your coolest 1960s gear and to dance to terrific music until you drop. It’s all this party splendour that sets the Britcham Ball apart, making it one of the most popular events on the Hong Kong calendar, year after year. As well as having fun, we are doing some great things by supporting our two main ball charities, both of which are doing great work here in Hong Kong: MINDSET and Feeding Hong Kong. Do please dig deep to lend a helping hand to these two great causes. This evening would not be possible without the terrific support of our sponsors. Without their generosity, we simply could not have put on such a distinctive evening of fun. A huge vote of thanks to our title sponsors Accenture and Jardine Matheson, and all our other kind supporters – please take a moment to look up their details in the programme. Thanks also to all of you here tonight who have taken seats or tables. I am also very grateful to the Chamber team for the creativity and hard work they poured into this evening’s arrangements. Finally, thank you in advance for the boundless enthusiasm I know you will bring to the Ball, by far the most important ingredient in its success. Have a wonderful evening. Andrew Seaton Executive Director The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong

Mark Greenberg Group Strategy Director Jardine Matheson

As one of the title sponsors for this annual event, on behalf of Accenture, I would like to extend a very warm welcome. What a night the team has prepared for you, and what better theme than the Swinging 60s, a time when all things cool were coming out of Britain – The Beatles, The Kinks, The Stones, Twiggy, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore and James Bond, to mention just a few… in short, a cultural revolution known simply as “The British Invasion”. Having been in the consulting industry for over 60 years, Accenture has lived through a number of revolutions in the workplace. In that time, we have worked with many of your companies, in Hong Kong and around the world, as we strive to drive innovation to improve the way the world lives and works. Tonight we’re honoured to join the good and the great of Hong Kong, for a very worthwhile cause. We have chosen to support Feeding Hong Kong, the only food bank in Hong Kong dedicated to rescuing surplus nutritious food from retailers, distributors and manufacturers and redistributing it to people in need. So tonight we hope you enjoy every moment and detail that the event and Hyatt teams have prepared for you, and please dig deep to support this important cause. We would also like to thank the Chamber for providing this excellent platform to give back to the community. Wishing you all a truly cool and fab evening! Steve Willis & the Accenture team

London became the world capital of cool after TIME magazine named its 15 April 1966 issue “London: the Swinging City”. It soon attracted a generation of artists, musicians, writers, advertisers and photographers drawn by a new relaxed attitude towards hedonism. England won the World Cup in 1966 – for the first and, at least up until now, the last time! As well as distinctive fashion, the Union Jack flag became a cultural icon and a symbol of cool. And let’s not forget the Mini Cooper – the car that drove the Swinging 60s!

The Kinks immortalised Soho’s Carnaby Street – the centre of mod fashion – in their 1966 hit “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”. Illegal pirate radio stations flourished, including Radio Caroline and Swinging Radio England. They helped bands like The Who, The Small Faces and The Kinks.

Everything changed in 1963 when The Beatles released their Christmas No.1 “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, which stayed in the charts for five weeks. The 60s was a time for the big-screen movies – from James Bond in Dr. No, Goldfinger and From Russia with Love, to era-defining classics like The Italian Job and Easy Rider. Hairstyles for men included the mop-top, the Afro and the pompadour. Women often favoured the beehive or the French twist.

Tonight: The Twist

This is one of the eradefining dances. It’s very straightforward: you bend your knees and, er, “twist” your hips from side to side. Guaranteed to work with almost any song from the sixties. Not guaranteed to impress your partner.

The Swim

Now you’ve mastered the basics, The Swim takes things one step further for extra fun. While you’re busy twisting away at the hips, use your arms to perform your favourite swimming style – breaststroke, diving or even sinking to the bottom of the sea holding your nose. Just don’t hold your breath.

The Hand Jive

If you’re too tired to twist but don’t want to stop dancing, why not try The Hand Jive – you can even do it sitting down! With its roots in the fifties but still ragingly popular in the Swinging 60s, this table-top two-step requires speed and good coordination to pull off.

Take a seat and treat yourself to a fantastic dinner. From savoury lollipops to indulgent desserts, it’s sure to be a meal to remember! Share the fun on Instagram with #britchamball and #swinging60s, plus tag us @britchamhk for a chance to win tickets to the 2017 Annual Ball!

The denizens of swinging London loved a good party – and a good drink! After a day of shopping on Carnaby Street and dancing up a storm to the latest Beatles album, it was time for a tipple or two. The trendsetters were mad for cocktails and sipped delicious concoctions in places like The Pheasantry in Chelsea and The Playboy Club in Hyde Park as they partied the night away.

Try this sweet and sour creation inspired by one of our favourite bands!

Every day in Hong Kong, 3,600 tonnes of food ends up in landfills. At the same time, one in six people are living in poverty and struggling to meet their basic needs, including one in three seniors and one in five children. Feeding Hong Kong was established to address this issue and works with over 160 companies to redirect excess food, avoiding waste while doing good. By collaborating with manufacturers, distributors and retailers, we prevent 42 tonnes of food, the equivalent of 100,000 meals, from being lost every month. All food donations are sorted, checked and logged at the Feeding Hong Kong warehouse. Next, they are redistributed to a network of partner charities who provide food directly to those in need. Our 65 partners include shelters for women, migrant workers and the homeless, in addition to senior day centres, children’s homes and organisations assisting refugees and immigrants. Together, they help over 24,000 people each month. By supporting Feeding Hong Kong, you reduce the amount of food sent to landfills while fighting hunger and helping local charities on the frontline of poverty relief.

Every year, the Chamber supports our community by working with organisations that make Hong Kong a better place and offer a helping hand to those in need.

Mental health and mental illness are pressing issues in Hong Kong, but they have long been ignored and overlooked. Despite estimates that one in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year, myths and prejudices have created a stigma against those suffering from or receiving treatment for mental illness. This year, we are supporting MINDSET. Founded in 2002 by the Jardine Matheson Group, this charity aims to change attitudes concerning mental health issues and offers help to individuals, families and organisations in need. Funds raised through the auction will aid MINDSET’s initiatives in the following areas: Education and prevention through the Health in Mind programme, which raises awareness amongst young people and is offered in schools through a partnership with the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Reintegration assistance to help those recovering from mental illness through different services, including community activities and a job training programme at Jardine Matheson Group companies. Financial support to fund projects benefitting individuals suffering from mental illness, as well as their carers and families. Community awareness and fundraising to advance mental health-related causes while promoting awareness through special activities. Promotion at group companies to increase awareness of MINDSET and mental health-related issues across the Jardine Matheson Group.

This ensemble of mop-haired, well-dressed, clean-cut chaps from the north of England was, quite possibly, the most important band in the history of pop music. Formed in 1960 by four working-class lads from the industrial port city of Liverpool, The Beatles changed the face of pop music forever. The four – Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Star – metamorphosed from writing the jangly skiffle-inspired pop of their early days to era-defining concept albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, ensuring they remain a household name to this day.

Hailing from London’s posh suburbs, The Ston es’ music was all about the blues. Taking their influences from across the Atla ntic, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones and Charlie Watts had a line in playing raunchy, soulful rhythm and blues that was at odds with the nice-boy ima ge of The Beatles. From their early days in London’s clubs to packing out stad iums across the world, The Rolling Stones remain famous for songs that deal with the edgier side of the Swinging Sixties, including “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfac tion” and “Mother’s Little Helper”. Dressed like Mick or Keith? Instagram your look with #britchamball and #swinging60s. Want to win tickets to the 201 7 Annual Ball? Tag us @britchamhk!

In the 60s, convention gave way to creativity when young Londoners demanded a new look for a new era. Conservative togs were cast aside, making way for mod suits, mini-skirts and bohemian frocks in bright colours and psychedelic patterns. Hip kids flocked to Carnaby Street and King's Road to stock up on the latest creations from the likes of Mary Quant, who dressed models Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy in her barely-there dresses. These styles still inspire designers today while vintage collectors scour markets for pieces from this influential time. Soho was the place to buy the latest trends, especially on Carnaby Street for men and Kensington Road for ladies. Share your swinging style on Facebook and win tickets to the 2017 Annual Ball with #britchamball and #swinging60s. Don’t forget to tag @britchamhk to enter!
