WELCOME TO THE BALL A very warm welcome to this year’s Britcham Ball – in this, the 30th anniversary year of the Chamber. This year, the Ball is celebrating the history and creativity of British films – a theme which we hope will also give you great scope for creativity in your choice of costume. As always, there will be good company, good food and lots of dancing, all making the Ball one of the most relaxed and enjoyable events on the Hong Kong calendar. Tonight is not just about fun. We will be supporting two excellent charities who do great work in Hong Kong – Feeding Hong Kong and MINDSET. Please do dig deep so we can make a real contribution to their work. The evening simply would not happen without the terrific support of our sponsors. I am hugely grateful to our title sponsors – Accenture and Jardines, and to our Gold, Silver and other sponsors for their generous support: their names are listed in this programme, so please do take a moment to check. And many thanks to all those who have taken tables and seats. Finally, thank you all in advance for the enthusiasm and participation I know you will bring: this is the key ingredient in the Ball’s success. Have a great evening.

Andrew Seaton, Executive Director The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong

On behalf of title sponsor Jardines, welcome once again to the oh-so-fabulous Britcham Ball. I’m sure you’ll all agree that tonight really is the highlight of the social calendar, bringing together representatives from many of Hong Kong’s best loved organisations for a jolly good time. This year, the Chamber is serving up a lavish celebration of British cinema in what promises to be a star-studded evening of costume dramas and comic out-takes. From Harry Potter to the Knights that say “Ni!”, there’s something for everyone. Of course tonight is not all about frolicking fun and cinematic splendour. We’re here to raise much-needed funds for two fantastic local charities. Jardines’ charity of choice is MINDSET, who offer vital support to sufferers of mental illness and to their families. So let’s roll on, dig deep and make tonight a box office hit.

Mark Greenberg, Group Strategy Director Jardine Matheson

Welcome to the Britcham Ball! Accenture is proud to be one of the title sponsors once again and we’re delighted to see many familiar faces. Tonight’s British cinema-themed celebration will surely be met with great expectations. The Britcham Ball is both an important fundraiser and a unique networking opportunity, not to mention an absolutely fabulous show! The Britcham team have done a wonderful job once again, bringing together live entertainment, a gourmet spread and of course the finest wines known to humanity. While you enjoy the evening’s offerings do spare some time to read up about Feeding Hong Kong, Accenture’s chosen charity and one of tonight’s beneficiaries. Feeding Hong Kong is the city’s only food bank, doing the important work of redistributing surplus food to those in need. And of course I know you’ll all give generously because love actually is… all around.

Chris Harvey, Managing Director of Financial Services for Asia-Pacific Accenture

BRITISH Movie Trivia

In

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI,

the elephants used in filming would take breaks to cool off in the water every four hours, whether the crew wanted them to or not.

Clocking in at a hefty 227 minutes, the 1962 epic LAWRENCE OF ARABIA has no female dialogue.

Speaking of dialogue, in

BILLY ELLIOT, some of actor Jamie Bell’s lines had to be synced because his voice had just broken.

British cinema captures some of the most memorable moments in film history and, over the decades, has helped define genres like fantasy, horror, thriller, romantic comedy and more. But behind the famous titles lurk strange, shocking and downright amusing facts. Here are some interesting tit-bits you might not know.

Richard Curtis was inspired to write FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL when he realised he’d attended 72 weddings in 10 years. 10

The famous fight scene between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth in 2001’s BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY was improvised by the actors rather than choreographed.

Daniel Craig lost his two front teeth while filming CASINO ROYALE in Prague, and his dentist had to fly in from London to replace them. 11

“Bond.

JAMES BOND.” If there’s one icon of British cinema who needs no introduction, it’s Bond. The world’s favourite fictional spy was created by author Ian Fleming, but it was on the big screen that he first entered people’s imaginations. Famed for his love of a dry martini – shaken, not stirred, of course – and the company of the opposite sex, James Bond is the ultimate debonair bad-boy Brit. Codenamed 007, his adventures take him across the world, from the jungles of the Caribbean to the Siberian tundra. His love of innovative gadgets and weapons

is legendary, as is his passion for escaping from the tightest, most perilous spots imaginable. Over the years, there have been no fewer than 24 Bond films, and the character has been played by such acting luminaries as Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. But regardless of who portrays him, he remains suave, keeps his licence to kill and always gets the girl. He does it all on behalf of Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and single-handedly saves the world time and time again.

To honour this cinematic icon, we have created the Shaken Not Stirred Bar. So strike a pose and check out what we have to offer. 15

Whether it’s Mr Darcy sampling a delicate aperitif in Pride and Prejudice, or Richard E. Grant enjoying the finest wines known to humanity in Withnail & I, the pleasures of (sensible) imbibing have always been a feature of British cinema. So in that spirit, here are some of our very own superb tipples for you to try.

SHAKEN NOT STIRRED BAR Proudly sponsored by the Berkeley Group, the Shaken Not Stirred Bar is our tribute to Britain’s favourite spy. As well as serving a range of sophisticated beverages, you simply must try a martini – shaken, not stirred – naturally.

BREWDOG BEER BAR In 2007, friends James Watt and Martin Dickie brewed their seminal beer before opening their first bar in Aberdeen. Since then, Brewdog has become the UK’s largest independent brewery and has received numerous awards. Today, Brewdog is one of the most well-known craft beer brands anywhere. Here are some of their delicious brews for you to sample: BREWDOG PUNK IPA

For three decades, the British Chamber of Commerce has been operating in Hong Kong to provide members with a platform and meeting point where they can create business opportunities, and to enhance Hong Kong’s standing and effectiveness as an international business centre. With Chamber member companies employing approximately 12% of the Hong Kong working population, the

18

Chamber continues to grow from strength to strength. None of which would be possible without you, our supporters. So thank you! We’ve had global political leaders, economic gurus, finance wizards and entrepreneurial mavericks come through our doors, each providing their world-class insights and topical perspectives on the future of Hong Kong.

However! Our Annual Balls are all about fun. They’re about making great connections and having a good ol’ boogie, whilst also raising money for some fantastic causes. Over the years, our balls have transported guests from the vibrant Notting Hill Carnival, down the rabbit hole to Wonderland and into the depths of the Amazon rainforest. We’ve seen acrobatics at the circus, jiving in the 1940s and magic at Hogwarts. Here’s to another 30 years!

We are fully committed to building for a better quality of life and living environment in a safe and sustainable manner.

BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW

Every day in Hong Kong, 3,400 tonnes of food are sent to landfill. At the same time, 1 in 8 people live in poverty and struggle to meet their basic food needs. This includes 1 in 3 seniors and 1 in 5 children. Feeding Hong Kong was established to redress this balance. Feeding Hong Kong provides a link between companies that have surplus food they are no longer going to sell, and local charities directly feeding people in need. Our 70 charity partners include homeless shelters, migrant workers’ and women’s refuges, senior day centres, refugee and new immigrant support centres, children’s homes and other non-profit programmes that provide food for the hungry. Last year, the Britcham Ball raised over HK$200,000 for feeding Hong Kong. This helped us collect and redistribute more than 17 tonnes of food through our Yau Tong Food Bank and support more than 40,000 meals for vulnerable families across the city.

INTEGRITY EXCELLENCE www.gammonconstruction.com

We offer our sincere thanks to the organisers, sponsors and guests of the Britcham Ball for helping to make this possible. With your help, we will continue to work hard to ensure surplus food goes to feed those in need, not landfills. 21

MINDSET’s goal is to make a difference in the area of mental health. Led by Jardine Ambassadors, the programme aims to change people’s attitudes about mental health issues by raising awareness and understanding about them, as well as providing direct assistance to those in need of help. MINDSET is a registered charity in Hong Kong and was established in 2002. Mental health and mental illness have been largely neglected and underestimated in Hong Kong. It is estimated that one in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Myths and prejudices mean that the stigma against people suffering or recovering from mental illnesses is still prevalent. MINDSET aims to change people’s attitudes by raising awareness and understanding of mental health issues, as well as providing direct assistance to individuals, families and organisations in need of help. Over HK$145,000 was raised at the Annual Ball last year to support the ‘MINDSET Expression’ art project. By engaging in different-themed art activities, people in recovery were able to express themselves and realise their untapped artistic potential. They were also able to establish a bond with their peers, bringing them back into the community – a crucial stage in their recovery journey. The funds raised at this year’s Annual Ball will support MINDSET’s initiatives in the following areas:

22

Education and Prevention – to raise awareness of mental health issues among young people through the in-school ‘Health in Mind’ programme, organised in conjunction with the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Reintegration – to support effective reintegration services to mental health service agencies through community activities, together with the promotion of a job training programme at Jardine Matheson Group companies for people recovering from mental illness. Financial Support – to provide funding support to mental health projects that benefit individuals who suffer from a mental illness, as well as their carers and their families. Community Awareness and Fund Raising – to promote community awareness of mental healthrelated issues through activities, and to raise funds for mental health-related causes. Promotion at Group Companies – to increase awareness of MINDSET and mental health-related issues across the Jardine Matheson Group.

GREAT BRITISH CINEMA CLASSICS PART 2

It isn’t often that a British film franchise comes along and enchants adults and children alike, but the Harry Potter films have done just that. The eight onscreen adaptations of the boy wizard’s adventures combined stunning visual effects with strong characters, which had a massive impact on the British cinema industry. They have also been hugely profitable: between 2001 and 2011, they generated more than US$7.72 billion in box office revenue alone!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone In this, the very first Potter film, Daniel Radcliffe introduces the world to the eleven-year-old orphan who discovers he’s actually a wizard.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire In the fourth instalment of the franchise, Harry competes in the Triwizard Tournament, representing his famous school – Hogwarts – and facing three deadly challenges.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 and 2 In the last two films of the series, Harry faces his nemesis, Lord Voldemort, once more, ending in the biggest battle the wizarding world has ever seen.

THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL

IN THE DRESSING ROOM British cinema is famous for its memorable costumes, which have delighted fans around the world for years. Whether it’s exquisite dresses from period dramas like Pride & Prejudice, or the tough street style of London gangsters in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the British have always known how to create an iconic image on the big screen. To get you inspired, here are six of our favourites. Don’t forget to post your own pictures on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook tonight with #30yearsofbritcham and #britchamball, and tag us @britchamhk.

COUNT DRACULA (CHRISTOPHER LEE) DRACULA A.D. 1972 There are few sights more debonair, fiendish and downright ridiculous than Christopher Lee in Dracula A.D. 1972. This classic of the vampire genre has long been an inspiration for fancy dress parties, with legions of devoted fans donning capes and plastic fangs to become the evil count for a night. Delicious.

LT GONVILLE BROMHEAD (MICHAEL CAINE) ZULU Zulu has it all: dramatic scenery, epic battles, Welsh male voice choirs and, of course, those splendid uniforms. Today, you’re more likely to see people dressed in the red coat and white pith helmet at the Rugby Sevens, but this really once was the uniform of British troops, poor chaps.

30

To be fair, there are dozens of costumes you can choose from in this beloved British comedy. Ladies can don elegant medieval gowns worn by the perilous women in Castle Anthrax, but chaps will always want to be the Knights of the Round Table. These all-singing, all-dancing warriors really know how to get a party started!

THE CAST HARRY POTTER When J.K. Rowling’s beloved books made it to the big screen, you might say it was the costumes that weaved the greatest spells on fans. So whether you’re a young wizard-in-training like Hermione Granger, an Albus Dumbledore, or even a sinister Voldemort, you’re assured of a classic look that is recognised instantly.

QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER (HELENA BONHAM CARTER) THE KING’S SPEECH Nothing is quite so quintessentially British as the Royal Family, and who better to portray them than Helena Bonham Carter. In The King’s Speech, she plays the Queen Mother, so expect all things ‘30s. This was a time of revolution in women’s fashion, with longer skirts, natural waistlines, long gloves and the Eugénie hat becoming popular.

ALEX DELARGE (MALCOLM MCDOWELL) A CLOCKWORK ORANGE Set in London in the ‘70s, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece prefigured punk rock and embodied teen rebellion, albeit with a slice of ultraviolence. All you need to complete the look are white jodhpurs, a white shirt, a pair of white braces, a black bowler hat and black assault boots. Oh and don’t forget the white cricket box and obligatory glass of milk. 31

You really have all outdone yourselves this evening, with several costumes worthy of red carpet treatment. Our judges will choose the best dressed guests and treat them to special prizes, so get ready to look sharp and strike a pose on the dancefloor. Don’t forget to share your look online using #30yearsofbritcham and #britchamball. Tickets to the Britcham Christmas Party are up for grabs, so tag us @britchamhk to win!

GREAT BRITISH CINEMA CLASSICS PART 3

Hammer Horror Werewolves, vampires, mummies and even the odd reconstructed corpse, aka Frankenstein. These are so much a part of our cinema culture today that we take them for granted. But they really came into their own when Hammer Film Productions released dozens of horror classics throughout the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. The likes of Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt and Peter Cushing brought melodrama to the genre like never before and remain classics to this day, in all their blood-spattered glory.

The Curse of Frankenstein Starring Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein, this was the original Hammer Horror film that truly gave birth to a monster – six of them, to be precise.

Dracula Released in 1958, this was Christopher Lee’s first appearance as the evil count, and it spawned eight sequels due to its seductive success.

The Mummy Creeping onto the screen in 1959, The Mummy unleashed three more films in the franchise, including The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb and The Mummy’s Shroud. 39

GREAT BRITISH CINEMA CLASSICS PART 4

British Comedy The British sense of humour, quite rightly, takes its place among the nation’s greatest assets. Long renowned for its dry wit, use of understatement and, er, keen sense of irony, British humour has been translated to film for decades and exported round the world. From the early films of Charlie Chaplin and Monty Python’s masterpieces, to director Richard Curtis’s beloved romantic comedies and actor Rowan Atkinson’s spy-spoof Johnny English movies, British comedy represents an unbroken line of laugh-out-loud moments that continues to delight audiences everywhere.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail Thy Python team produced several classics in the ‘70s and ‘80s, including The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life, but none capture their anarchic genius as much as this tale of King Arthur and his manservant, Patsy.

Bridget Jones’s Diary Renée Zellweger’s portrayal of the 32-year-old singleton caught in a love triangle between the caddish Hugh Grant and stiff-upper-lipped Colin Firth is still a romcom favourite today.

The Full Monty A film about unemployed steel mill workers turning to stripping to make a living might not sound particularly funny, but 1997’s The Full Monty broke new boundaries and caused an uproar of laughter when it was released.
