TRAMPOLINE TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 1-2 OCTOBER 2022 UTILITA ARENA, BIRMINGHAM OFFICIAL DIGITAL PROGRAMME

Welcome to the Jaffa Trampoline, Tumbling and DMT British Championships here at Utilita Arena Birmingham. It’s great to be back at this fantastic venue to watch these three incredible disciplines.

It’s been a brilliant year of gymnastics already. From the Commonwealth Games, where gymnasts from the home nations in rhythmic and artistic gymnastics inspired so many with their performances in this very arena, to the Artistic European’s that followed in Munich, this is now time for trampoline, tumbling and DMT to take centre stage. The gymnastics we have seen this summer have not just been a tremendous showcase for the sport, but also a demonstration of what can be achieved when the focus is not on winning, but on winning well.

We’re fortunate to be watching these three disciplines at a time when we have a current World or European champion competing in each. In the last 12 months we’ve seen Bryony Page win Olympic bronze before going on to win World gold and European gold on the trampoline. Megan Kealy became world tumbling champion in 2021, and DMT gymnast, Kirsty Way, stood on top of the podium at the European Championships earlier this year.

All three disciplines are extraordinary in their own right and it will be a privilege to see gymnasts right through the age groups compete this weekend.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the gymnasts, coaches and clubs on being here, and wish you all the best of luck. Whatever scores you achieve, competing at a British Championships is a special achievement and something you can be immensely proud of for the rest of your life.

Whether you’re here competing, coaching or supporting, I hope you enjoy every minute.

TRAMPOLINE TUMBLING & DMT

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Trampoline is one of the most exhilarating sports there is. The sky really is the limit!

Trampoline gymnasts experience between 4-7 G-force during routines (similar to that of a Formula 1 driver), therefore athletes must be strong enough to control four times their bodyweight!

Tumbling is a truly breathtaking gymnastics discipline. It’s all about somersaults, flips and twists - and linking them together, one right after the other. Top tumblers are extremely powerful and must have speed down the runway but control on the landing.

Double mini trampoline packs a lot of action into a short space of time. Combining power with high-flying stunts, gymnasts have incredible strength and coordination and can perform amazing skills.

12 #2022British

This is a spectacular sport that can require a top trampoline gymnast to reach heights of 10 metres whilst performing multiple somersaults and twists.

An individual trampoline routine is made up of ten skills and must start and finish on the feet. The competition is made up of voluntary and set routines. The set routine includes a sequence of specific skills that all gymnasts must complete while the voluntary or “vol” routine lets the gymnast create their own routine with the skills they want to perform.

As well as looking for good execution of the skills and high difficulty, trampoline judges also take into account the amount of time the gymnast spends in the air - known as time of flight - which is added to the final score.

Synchronised trampoline demands the same skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Using two trampolines, two gymnasts perform identical ten-skill routines at the same time.

TRAMPOLINE TUMBLING

This discipline is spectacular and requires dynamic reactions, spatial awareness, coordination, power, strength and courage. The action takes no more than a few seconds but requires years of hard work.

Tumbling is an explosive sport performed on a 25-metre-long sprung runway (tumble track) that helps the gymnasts rebound nearly 5 metres into the air as they demonstrate speed, strength and agility while executing a series of somersaults and twists. Tumblers travel along the tumble track performing eight consecutive skills. The judges are looking for no interruption or change of rhythm with only the feet or hands touching the tumble track.

DOUBLE MINI TRAMPOLINE (DMT)

This competition combines the horizontal run of tumbling with the vertical rebound of trampoline. After a short run, the gymnast jumps onto a bed less than a quarter the size of a trampoline to perform a skill - single, double and triple somersaults - immediately followed by a dismount element onto a landing mat. The first part of the double mini trampoline is called the mount which is at an angle. Gymnasts perform skills from this onto the second part of the DMT. This part is called the spotter. Skills can be performed back onto the mini trampoline or as a dismount onto the landing mat.

Judges are looking for good execution of skills and high difficulty with controlled landings within the designated zone.

BRYONY PAGE 2X OLYMPIC MEDALLIST 2021 WORLD CHAMPION 2022 EUROPEAN CHAMPION 14 #2022British

Since the last British Championships took place, Bryony Page has cemented her name in the history books.

In just over a year, the trampoline star has won medals at all three major competitions; the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships.

At the Tokyo Games, held in 2021, Bryony won her second Olympic medal by claiming bronze in a pulsating final. Fast forward to November of the same year and it was an outstanding individual gold at the World Championships – her first major title. Then just a couple of months ago, in Italy, Bryony became European champion.

Having enjoyed so much recent success, Bryony returns to competition this weekend in Birmingham, excited by the thought of a home crowd:

“I love having a crowd. I often see competitions as performances and having a crowd often helps me, especially a home crowd with lots of support.

“It will be really exciting to have a crowd at the British Championships. It feels like it’s been a long time!”

This weekend comes at a time when preparations are stepping up for the World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, where Bryony will have the opportunity to defend her title.

But it’s coming back to the British Championships where she was first inspired to chase her dreams:

“I loved watching the men’s and women’s competitions when I competed at the British when I was younger. I didn’t know the skills they were doing, I hadn’t learnt them yet, I hadn’t seen them yet, so it was really exciting to see people perform them and perform them so well.

“I wanted to be up there with them and I wanted to compete. I was in awe.”

As one of Britain’s most successful gymnasts, Bryony is now inspiring the next generation, just like they inspired her.

Bryony competes in senior women’s qualifying from 13:30 on Saturday, with the final taking place on Sunday at 14:40.

JAYDON

PADDOCK

BIRMINGHAM’S OWN

Born and raised in Birmingham, competing in his home city is going to be special for tumbling sensation Jaydon Paddock.

A regular in British squads through recent years, he’s a phenomenal talent, and he’s back to put on a show in front of his home crowd.

“Having a Birmingham crowd helps a lot. Having City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club, my family and my friends there, who may never seen me compete, will be great. There will be pressure that I put on myself to perform for my home crowd.”

“Competing in Birmingham will feel a little different, but it will be a good pressure. It will push me on. As a Birmingham lad with a Birmingham crowd, I couldn’t ask for anymore!”

Tumbling is a fascinating sport to watch and compete in. By speaking to Jaydon, you soon understand what it is he enjoys so much about it.

“It’s so fast paced. Every tumbler has a different technique or a different style. In the senior event you will see single transitions to triples, two transitions to doubles or triples. There are always masses of skills, but everyone has their own twist and flair and their own way of doing it.”

18 #2022British

Jaydon has been making his mark on the international stage for several years now and will have one eye on the World Championships which take place next month in Sofia, Bulgaria.

At the European Championships earlier this year, he narrowly missed out on a medal, placing fourth. He made the final at the World Games a month later too, finishing fifth to prove that he belongs amongst the world’s elite.

You can see Jaydon in qualifying on Saturday at 14:20, with the final set to take place on Sunday at 14:40.

KIRSTY WAY

Current European DMT champion, Kirsty Way is one of the stand-out gymnasts competing in Birmingham this weekend.

Her performances in Italy earlier this year saw her become a two-time individual European champion in the double mini trampoline discipline, having won it for the first time in 2018.

Kirsty is back this weekend hoping to continue the form that also saw her help the team to European gold at the same event.

Speaking about the importance of the British Championships, Kirsty said:

“It is one of the most exciting competitions of the year for us. It’s our chance to show a home crowd what we’re working on and how good we are.

“For me, the British is important this year because it’s a chance for me to put out and practice the passes that I’ll hopefully be competing at the World Championships later this year. It’s also the last qualification event for the World Championships so we really need to show a good performance, put down some solid passes and prove that we’re good enough to be on the team.”

Should she be selected, November could see Kirsty compete at her fifth World Championships as a senior. In her four appearances to date, she’s helped the team win an exceptional three silver medals, as well as claiming a personal best individual finish of sixth.

You can see Kirsty in qualifying on Saturday at 13:30, with the final on Sunday at 11:00.
