WELCOME TO MANCHESTER

This manual gives you key details about your stay, including what happens when you arrive, what you will learn on the course, more information about the coaches and staff, as well as the residence and your welfare.

We hope you have a wonderful stay!

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

Players travelling alone

When you arrive in the UK you will be met by a British Study Centres representative, who will be wearing a uniform. They will be holding a sign with your name. When you see us, tell us your name. We will then take you to your transfer (a coach or taxi). We encourage you to telephone your family when you arrive at the residence so they know you have arrived safely.

If you have booked a shared transfer, you will join some other colleagues at a waiting area, accompanied by a British Study Centres Young Learners representative. The waiting time is in between 2-3 hours. Shared transfers can only be booked for arrivals between 10:00 and 22:00. If your flight arrives outside those hours, please contact BSC Young Learners to change your transfer to private.

If your parents / carers are collecting you from the opening ceremony, but are not attending, can they collect you at 16:15. They must bring ID and inform of their intention to collect you by email.

Players travelling with parents

If your family is dropping you off at your accommodation, please arrive between noon and 16:00 on the Sunday. For your safety and safeguarding of your campmates, parents are not allowed in the student bedrooms or any other areas that are shared with children. You will be asked to say goodbye to them at the check-in area.

If you need help with unpacking your clothes, connecting to the WIFI or anything else, the BSC YL staff are always here to help you and make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

All Players

Whether you are travelling alone or with parents, we will welcome you on arrival and help you settle in, showing you your room and the facilities. We will explain what happens for the rest of the day, and also your schedule for the week.

GETTING AROUND

Transport

You will be picked up every morning from the residence, with BSC YL staff, by private coach and you will be taken to the City Football Academy, Manchester City’s training facility. At the end of each day, the coach will take you back, with the BSC YL staff to the residence.

Transport on excursions

If you are booked on any excursions, you will travel by coach accompanied by BSC YL staff. Please listen and follow their instructions.

You will not travel on public transport but please still be mindful and respect your team mates, and the vehicle you travel on. Do not listen to music too loud, talk too loud, or leave any rubbish.

OUR STAFF

Our team are happy to help you. Here are the different members of staff that you will meet:

The Centre Manager organise the staff, the activities, housekeeping and the catering. They spend a lot of time talking to the staff at the college and looking after the Group Leaders and other visitors. They will also organise your arrival and departure and check you in to the accommodation.

The Senior Activity & Welfare Leader looks after the wellbeing and safeguarding of all players, and is available if you need to speak to somebody about a problem. You can always speak to other members of staff if you feel more comfortable doing so. They will also make sure you have everything you need to make your stay safe and enjoyable.

The Activity Leaders will be with you the most during your stay. They will wake you up in the morning and make sure you have everything with you to ensure your day starts off in the best possible way. They will remain with you through the day making sure your daily activities run smoothly and they are there to assist you with any concerns or problems you may have. They also run the evening activities and make sure everyone is settled and in bed for the evening.

Manchester City Football Schools Coaches will lead the training sessions for all programmes and workshops for the Development and Performance programmes. They will work closely with you to help you improve your performance. Some of our staff are residential, and will live with you at the hotel.

DAY ONE INDUCTION

MEETING

All Programmes:

On arrival to the accommodation you will register with the BSC YL team. You will be asked for a form of identification (usually a passport) and in return you will receive your ID on a lanyard, your wrist bands, your training kit, and your key card to access your room. You will also a welcome pack with a schedule detailing your timetable for the week. If you have any questions, please ask your Centre Manager

You will be shown the nearest fire exit as you are taken to your room to unpack and you may take some time to relax. Your BSC YL staff member will tell you what time to meet for the induction and evening meal.

*You will be given the option to purchase a small Padlock (£5.00) if you haven’t brought one and a laundry bag (£3.00).

During the induction you will be told key information, including programme rules, what to do in an emergency, and general information about the programme and life in the UK. During this session, we will also deliver activities to allow you to make friends and feel comfortable in preparation for the week ahead.

YOUR PROGRAMME

How many hours will I train and study each week?

Each week you will have 15 hours of intensive football training sessions and 15 hours of development and performance tests and workshops. There will be regular breaks and you will have an hour for lunch.

Will I get an evaluation at the end of my course?

Yes, at the end of the course you will take away a personal player evaluation with valuable insight into your current performance, and a development plan to improve your game as you return to your school or club. Closing Ceremony, You will also receive a certificate on the last day of your course, which will be presented to you in one of the hospitality suites at the Etihad Stadium. Parents are invited to attend this session, and will receive a registration link closer to the time.

Who should I talk to if I have a problem or I am worried about something?

If you have a problem, are worried about something, or you have a personal issue you want to talk about, ask your Welfare Manager, Centre Manager or any member of staff. If you are still not happy, you can contact British Study Centres Young Learners head office (please see the player notice board

‘Complaints Notice’ for contact names, numbers and British Study Centres Young Learners head office address). Please tell us if you are worried or unhappy about something – we will listen and try to help you.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Manchester City Football School’s Development Course is a residential football training course focusing on supporting the development of young players who are learning the fundamentals of the game. The course takes place at the City Football Academy and lasts for 5 nights (Sunday to Friday), giving you the opportunity to gain an authentic insight into how players within Manchester City’s youth system train and play at the City Football Academy. The course and training sessions are delivered by qualified Manchester City Football Schools coaches who are experienced in Manchester City’s philosophy and methodology.

In the training sessions, you will cover a variety of skills including:

Playing with style

Learning how to dominate the game,

PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME

The Manchester City Football School’s Performance Course is a residential football training course provides a unique insight into the demands of being a professional player; both physical and psychological, and the techniques they use to improve their performance.

Specific topics covered in our practical training sessions and interactive workshops include:

Players can also expect to undergo a series of performance tests for athletic ability to evaluate their aerobic fitness, acceleration, agility, and stamina compared to a Manchester City Academy player!

OUR STANDARDS

We want your stay to be safe and happy. If you follow these rules it will be!

You must come to your sessions every day

If you are ill and cannot come to a session, contact your Welfare Manager or a member of staff

You must come to sessions at the correct time – do not be late!

Always listen to your coach and follow their instructions

Respect your coach and the other players in your team; Do not disrupt the session with bad behaviour

Always speak English with your teammates

Participate in session activities, you will enjoy it and learn more!

Every evening there will be supervised social activities at the hotel — film nights, sports nights, or project nights. They usually start at 19.30 and you will see posters advertising the activities each night. It is important that you follow these rules when you are on activities with us: You must come to all the activities and excursions You must arrive on time – do not be late!

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES EXCURSIONS

As part of the One week Performance or Development programmes, you will go on the Etihad Stadium Tour before attending the closing ceremony in one of the stadium suites.

Remember these tips to help keep safe:

Remember that the traffic is on the other side of the road (we drive on the left).

Look both ways before you cross the road, and use the pedestrian crossings. Traffic will not stop for you if you step into the road.

Make sure you understand where the bus will depart from on the way home and what time you need to be there.

It is a legal requirement to wear your seatbelt

Stay with your group at all times

Do not go off alone or with friends

Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious behaviour to a member of staff

INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS

International players

Coming to the UK on your own as an individual player is an exciting thing to do and this is an excellent chance to make friends from all over the world. If you are travelling alone, you will be assigned an activity leader, who will help you during your stay. They will meet you on your first day and show you where everything is. Your mentor will help you get to know your way around the centre, will introduce you to other players and you will soon make friends. If you have any problems, please ask your Activity Leader —they are here to help

MEALS

You will have breakfast and dinner at the residence, and lunch will take place at Connell College. You will also receive two snacks a day.

Food, Glorious Food!

Hot meals are usually cooked in big dishes and then served to you by college / hotel staff. You need to queue and take a tray to carry your food. You will need to ask for the food you want - remember to say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’! There is usually a choice of vegetables, salad and bread. In the UK we often have a dessert after a meal, this can be anything from a traditional pudding to yoghurt or fruit. Water is always available. Don’t forget to put your tray away when you are finished. You will be told what to do with your empty plate and cutlery, make sure you follow the rules! If you have any serious food allergies please tell us when you book and also inform your Centre Manager when you arrive. All food will be labelled and all requirements will be taken into consideration.

ACCOMMODATION

Outside of training and classes, you will be staying with teammates and staff at a nearby hotel. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends from around the world. Here are some important rules to help you have a safe and happy time while staying at the hotel:

You must never leave the hotel alone or with friends

Only leave the hotel or the CFA premises with BSC staff or with your Group Leader, if they have permission from the Centre Manager

You must be quiet in your bedroom in the evenings

The lights in your bedroom should be switched off by 22.00

IF YOU BREAK THESE RULES

You may be excluded from the programme

You will have to explain yourself to the Centre Manager BSC will telephone your parents or your agent

You will have to explain yourself to your parents or your agent

You may have to return home early and your parents will have to pay.

PLAYER CONDUCT

NO BULLYING

No hitting, kicking or hurting people

Do not take things from people that do not belong to you

Do not say unkind things to people or use bad language

Do not be rude or aggressive to people

Never say unkind things about people’s nationality or skin colour

Do not tell bad stories about people

Do not tell people they cannot join your group or make them feel lonely

NO ALCOHOL

You must not buy or drink alcohol or bring alcohol onto any part of the campus

It is illegal to buy or drink alcohol in the UK unless you are 18 years old

NO DRUGS

Do not take drugs - it is illegal and we will tell the Police

The Police will arrest you and you will be sent home

NO SMOKING

You must not smoke anywhere on campus

You must be 18 years old to buy cigarettes in the UK

NO STEALING FROM SHOPS OR OTHER STUDENTS

You must not take things from shops or from other players

The Police will be called and you may be sent home

NO VANDALISM

You must not write on walls or furniture

You must not damage any part of the college, or the college residence

You will have to pay for any damage

DO NOT TOUCH fire equipment, fire alarms, smoke alarms or fire equipment unless it is an emergency

Never move fire equipment to keep doors open

You will have to pay for fire services if they come and it is not an emergency

You will have to pay for new fire equipment if you damage it

YOUR SAFETY

We want you to have an enjoyable experience while you are staying with us. We also want you to be safe at all times. We are committed to ensuring you all have the appropriate level of safety and protection whilst in our care.

We have very extensive Safeguarding and Prevent Policies. Our staff are trained and will not tolerate any form of bullying, abuse or radical behaviour amongst our players or staff.

In the event of a fire alarm you MUST NOT USE THE LIFT

When using the lift at other times, please be aware that there is a maximum number of people allowed for safety reasons. If you and your friends overfill the lift and we have to call an engineer to repair it or free you from the lift, you will be charged for the call out and maintenance undertaken from the Engineer.

ONLINE SAFETY

We understand that you will spend time online as it can be a great way to socialise, explore and have fun. However please ‘be safe’ when online

Make sure you know who you are speaking to

Never give out personal details

Never arrange to meet someone you don’t know

Don’t look at images or content that make you feel uncomfortable

Never engage in bullying

Limit your time online

If you have any concerns about the above please tell a member of staff immediately

Security

The Etihad Campus is a highly secure environment with perimeter fencing and CCTV, you will be taken to and from the residence in private dedicated coaches and accompanied by members of staff.

The residential accommodation also has its own security measures in place. If you notice anything unusual or suspicious at the Etihad Campus or at the residence, please speak to a member of staff straight away.

Take very good care of your key or key card and never lend it to anyone. If you lose it, the cost will be £50 payable to the residential team. It is very important to tell your leader or staff member if you damage or break something, even if it was an accident. You could be liable if you purposedly break or misuse anything substantial at your accommodation (windows, mirrors, lifts etc...) during your stay. Fire alarms and extinguishers are for emergencies only. You will be fined if you misuse them (£220+VAT).

If you see another player causing damage, please report it to the Centre Manager. If we don’t know who damaged something, all players will have to share the cost of the repair. This means you may lose your deposit.

DAMAGES WELFARE - ASKING FOR HELP

If you have a problem, are worried about something, or you have a personal issue you want to talk about, ask your Welfare Manager, Centre Manager or any member of staff. Male and female staff members are available so you can decide who to talk to. If you are not sure who to ask for help, ask any member of our staff and they will assist you.
