This special pre-sessional English course prepares graduates of recognised universities for study on specified courses at postgraduate master's or equivalent level at NCUK member institutions. The PMP is designed to accommodate degree graduates with varying levels of English Language ability. The programme will be offered under NCUK guidelines and regulations. The central themes of the programme are: • the development of proficiency in the use of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) • t he promotion of independent learning skills • t he development of relevant study skills within a subject context
Academic Study Skills Focus on planning a research project, taking notes in lectures, seminars and tutorial discussion skills and group work.
By successfully completing this programme, you will be guaranteed admission to an appropriate postgraduate programme offered by an NCUK member institution.

Learning the advanced English language skills you need
The Subject module gives you experience of studying a relevant subject in English at a high academic level, before you go on to study your full Master’s degree. This allows students to progress to a wide range of subjects including common areas of Management, Life Sciences, or Engineering – or something completely different, such as Theatre and Drama, Artificial Intelligence, or Robotics. There are thousands of Master’s degree courses to choose from.
Taking the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module will ensure you have the high-level reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills needed to succeed on a Master’s degree course. Recognised by NCUK Universities, this qualification can be used for visa purposes and so you don’t need IELTS or another proof of English exam.
Developing academic research skills for postgraduate study Successful Master’s graduates need to have expertise in a wide range of academic research skills. When you take the Research Methods module, you will learn to effectively source and evaluate information from literature and the web, master qualitative and quantitative research methods, research and plan a project, analyse and manipulate data, and understand intellectual property conventions. Note, this module is assessed by a dissertation or project proposal.
Getting ready to study abroad The Orientation to Western Study module prepares you for the teaching and learning methods you will experience on your Master’s course: introducing you to the main differences between studying in your own country and studying at a western university. Please note that we will not formally assess you for this module.

Course Outcomes On successful completion of the programme you will be able to: •U se English confidently in a Western academic environment and demonstrate a proficiency in English language to a standard equivalent to at least EAP grade C. •L earn effectively at Masters level study. •M ake effective use of a range of generic and subject specific study skills, language skills and information and communications technologies as well as self-directed study. •C onduct project work in appropriate subject areas including the use of primary and secondary data, the analysis of evidence and the presentation of findings. •D emonstrate an understanding of Western culture sufficient to aid rapid adjustment to living and studying in the west.
Programme Aims •T o enhance your English language ability to a level sufficient to enable you to communicate and study effectively and confidently at postgraduate level at a Western university. •T o develop your academic skills and an understanding of the underlying philosophies and related capabilities required for successful study at postgraduate level in Western higher education. •T o relate your existing subject knowledge to that of Western graduates in similar discipline. •T o cultivate a commitment to good practice in academic work and in particular an awareness of the serious adverse implications of plagiarism. •T o provide you with the necessary personal and key skills to enable you to develop as independent, autonomous learner, including the demonstrated ability to be able to plan a significant individual research project. •T o give you practical experience of different methods that may be used to assess your learning. •T o introduce aspects of Western culture and enable an understanding of the policies, procedures and regulations affecting study in the West. •T o develop learning skills and reflective learning through the various elements of the programme.

Course Requirements In order to enter the PMP programme, students should normally have completed: • A Bachelors degree that is equivalent in academic level to a UK Bachelors degree • From a recognised university (i.e. the institution appears on government approval lists) • With a grade equivalent to a 2:1 • In a language other than English • Language level: IELTS 5.5 or equivalent To submit your application to NCUK, we will also need your: • Nationality • Academic qualifications, including when and where studied • English language qualification(s) (e.g. IELTS, Cambridge Assessment English) • Future progression plans, if known (in terms of subject and university)
Programme Assessment & Grading Each module will have an assessment schedule, which will be completed by the end of the appropriate term, and will include formative and summative assignments and other assessment tasks. Assessments are designed to demonstrate learning across the individual modules of the programme and to allow you to experience a wide range of the assessment methods used in Western postgraduate programmes. Assessments will normally include: • Coursework • Essays, reports and other structured assignments • Oral examinations • Unseen written examinations
