I am pleased to introduce this visitor handbook created by the British Council. This material has been designed for foreign visitors and athletes who will be coming for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games to serve as a visitor’s guide and provides some specialist vocabulary related to the Olympic and Paralympic sports. The handbook has also been designed with English language learners in mind. We hope that the dialogues, the exercises and the vocabulary are useful for the Games and beyond. As one of the world leaders in English language teaching, the British Council in Brazil collaborates with governments and institutions to provide teaching, teacher training and access to quality materials for teachers and learners. The British Council also works in the areas of Education and Society, Exams and Arts, building trust and understanding between the United Kingdom and Brazil. I hope that this publication serves as a useful tool to facilitate communication and understanding during the Games and as a tool for teaching and learning English, so that the legacy stretches beyond 2016.

Rowing/Remo Rowing is very old but it only developed as a competitive sport in the last 200 years. Interest began to increase when Oxford and Cambridge Universities began racing each other in 1829. This competition still continues today as the famous annual Boat Race. Water Polo/Polo aquático Water Polo developed during the 19th century as an aquatic version of rugby, played informally in rivers and lakes. The version of the game that survives today is closer to Handball: a fast, tough and demanding sport. O polo aquático surgiu durante o século XIX como uma versão aquática do rúgbi, jogado informalmente em rios e lagos. A versão do jogo atualmente conhecida está mais próxima do handebol: um esporte rápido, robusto e exigente.
