It is with great pleasure that I am able to welcome you to the first Summer Course Book of the Barcelona Young Learners Centre. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as the staff and pupils have enjoyed producing it. The creativity and motivation shown by everyone in creating the course book is a clear sign of the hard work and effort that has been put into this summer course. I would like therefore to thank everyone for their contributions and especially to Graham Stanley one of our Senior Teachers for his role in organising the project.
Welcome to the Bonanova Summer Course Book!
Our intention with the course book is to give you an idea of the sort of activities and work that students do in class. We are very proud of the progress that your children are making in English and the quality of their writing and contributions is evidence of that. We firmly believe in providing a stimulating and challenging environment so that students are given the knowledge and skills in English that will last them for the rest of their lives. We have introduced a number of changes to the centre this year. A new air conditioning system has been put in place to ensure the comfort of students and we also have new furniture in the classrooms. Our website http://www.britishcouncil.org/spain/barcelonabonanova has been re- launched this year and we have updated and improved our new student portal. The portal is an important element in our commitment to improving communications with you and please let us know if we can help you in any way with it. As ever we are keen to hear your feedback and ideas about all aspects of the centre. Students reports for the summer course and helpful resources can be found at https://spainportal.britishcouncil.org I would like to take this final opportunity to congratulate students and staff on another successful summer course and wish you all a very relaxing and safe summer holiday. Regards James

James McGrath Teaching Centre Manager, British Council Young Learners Centre Barcelona Bonanova
Bonanova Teaching Centre The British Council’s Barcelona Young Learners language centre offers a wide range of classes for young learners from 5 to 18. There are courses for all levels, designed so that students can progress from beginner right up to Cambridge Proficiency level. At some levels you can prepare for a Cambridge Exam, such as First Certificate, Advanced and Proficiency. All classes feature the British Council’s comprehensive learning support including learner support groups. Students can come to class once or twice a week and we have a variety of timetables to fit in with their lives – and yours!
English at Bonanova We offer high quality English courses for children and teenagers in modern, well equipped classrooms. Our teachers are experienced and well-qualified. As well as general English courses, you can choose Cambridge English exam preparation courses. We want your child to be motivated by and enjoy their classes and we believe that language learning is more effective when: students interact and participate actively in English; students enjoy classes; classes encourage independent learning and student autonomy; students get involved and strive to progress both in the classroom and beyond.
Summer courses We have a wide range of courses during the summer months for children and teenagers aged 8 to 17. In July, students can take one of our 90 hour courses, a great opportunity to complete a full level in one month.
Which course?
To make sure your course is at the right level for you, you’ll need to take a ‘level test’, which assesses your spoken and written English. The test takes an hour at most. You have to do the test if: you’ve not studied with us before or you haven’t done any study for at least six months If you have passed the Cambridge First (FCE), Advanced (CAE) or Proficiency (CPE) in the last year, you don't need to take the level test, but please bring your certificate when you come to register. One day, Super Clare met her boyfriend in a park near the sea. Suddenly, a hurricane appeared, and it took all the houses and the people that it found. She helped the people. She built a shelter and prevented the death of many people. Poseidon was very grateful because Super Clare saved many fishermen who took care of the sea, so he gave her some power. Her hair changed (now it's blonde) and she can dominate the four elements (air, water, ground and fire). She saves the lives of many people!

This book and film is about a girl called Matilda who is very clever and reads lots of books. Her father buys and sells cars illegally and her mother works in a casino. They are rich, but they don't look after Matilda well.
Matilda was growing up and the moment I liked most was when her mother, her father and brother were going out and she cleaned the house. When she was 4 years old, she started reading books at home.
Matilda was a smart child. Her parents didn't take care of her. She was bored with school and decided to go to the library every day to read books.

One day Mr & Mrs Wormwood had a baby. They named her Matilda. Her family hated Matilda because she was different. Matilda discovered she had powers and decided to tell her teacher.
When Matilda started going to school, Miss Honey was her teacher. She was the smartest girl in the class, but unfortunately the terrible head teacher disliked clever children.
Alèxia Duaigues Caldentey The first day of school was nice and the teacher saw that Matilda was very intelligent. Matilda had powers but her teachers didn't believe in it until Matilda showed it to her. Xavier Costa Salgado On the first day, Miss Honey tested the class on the two-times table. Matilda said the whole two-times table. Miss Honey was very surprised and she went to talk to Miss Turnbull, but she wasn't interested. Iona Clot Perez

Junior classes at Bonanova are for students aged 10-13. When students are 10, they move from a Primary class to a Junior class, where the methodology and course-book is very different. There they will be with other students of the same age and will start to learn about English grammar as well as expanding their vocabulary and beginning to read more sophisticated stories than are possible to read at Primary level.
Greg Junior students also start to listen to more difficult English and practise more speaking. The teachers will often ask them to do role-plays in English and to prepare presentations and they will do some project work, usually about things they are interested in: music or TV, films and other subjects. When the students are 14, they will then move to a senior class. The senior class will usually have the same number although it is a level higher (so Junior 5 students will move to Senior 5, etc).

The two Senior 5 classes have been busy this summer doing lots of reading, listening, speaking, writing and use of English. In addition, the four teachers have been asking the students to use a wiki for homework.
The students answered a survey (above) about learning English at the end of the course, which will help us know what worked well and what things we can improve on for the future.
The students who have successfully completed the Senior 5 course can now start to prepare for the Cambridge First Certificate in English, which usually takes 2 years or 200+ hours of practice and study for students to be ready after passing our Senior 5 level.

You can see a selection of the writing the two classes have produced this summer on the following pages.
Kyle
The writing ranges from compositions about the Environment to stories and urban myths.
Air pollution by factories by Albert P, Oriol P Nacho and Alex Have you ever seen the yellow haze in Barcelona’s sky? This is made by pollution. All the cities have pollution and factories. Barcelona, has a lot of factories in the outskirts. These factories expel bad substances for the body into the air. These bad substances make diseases. These bad substances affect all the world population. Factories contaminate a lot, because they don't have to regulate the residue that they expel to the air. This is a problem because they contaminate the air, the same air that we breath. Our lungs, can get a lot of diseases of the contaminated air. This is not a problem only for humans, because all the animals breath the same air, and can get a lot of diseases too. The factories of Barcelona should have strict control, and they don´t have any pollution. They should make more factories without making so much pollution, and also the air pollution in humans diseases makes them sick. It can produce a lot of diseases Also the pollution can affect animals and makes them sick and also the pollution can affect animal's protection , because some animals can protect themselves from the weather and the air pollution can change the weather. The air pollution produces climate change and it makes that the weather changes to extreme temperatures.
Water Wastage by Pablo, Kety, Natalia, Miquel How do we waste water? There are seven billion people in the world, and all of them need water. Nowadays there are millions ONG’s working to save water. Also people are thinking about things they have to do to save water. Water can be reused as drinking water and in industry. Some examples of wasting water that a lot of people make every day are: - Human waste: It is more efficient take a shower than a bath because you save more water, also the washing machine; we have to fill it up before we use the washing machine. - Waste from industry. To avoid the wastage, we have to make an effort on our part, like: do not take a bath, do not leave the tap running, use as little water as possible, don’t put the washing machine at half capacity, etc... We arrive for the conclusion that, we are destroying the planet if we continue using too much water for our living, we must STOP this danger for our descendants. SAVE THE WORLD !

Animals in Extinction by Paula, Pol, Javi & Adria Animals are very important for us, the world and life. If animals were extinct, the food chain couldn't be realised. That chain is very important: for the animals and for us, the humans. As we are part of that. If some animals become extinct we will lack food, like Blue Fin Tuna. Pollution is increasing the temperature in the Poles and it’s making the temperature hotter and polar bears have less places to live. It signifies that these bears have been dying every day. Hunting is a very big problem with whales, people are over-fishing whales because whale meat is expensive and these people make a lot of money. People feel powerless because they think that if they help nothing will change, but that's wrong because one person may only do a little bit but together our small actions add up to a lot. We can protect animals to prevent them becoming extinct in different ways. One possible thing to do is to be more logical and think about the consequences, the most important thing is to not destroy the environment; by not throwing the bottles into the forest, is an example, as is cleaning the beach. Then you have to help to protect animals and also try to get others to do it.
Car or walking? by Gerard, Ainhoa, Carla, Mar There are two kinds of people in life: there are people that are economical and prefer walking when the place is near, and there are people that use the car for everything. In this essay we will talk about the advantages or disadvantages of using the car or walking. The advantages of going with the car are that we go faster, arrive earlier at the places that we want to go to and give jobs to the other people because cars must be built and this make's the factory work. And the advantages of walking are that it doesn’t contaminate. Also is a way to train our bodies and it’s healthy. But there’re also disadvantages to travel by cars and walking like that ones that we are going to explain now. Travelling by car, has lots of disadvantages, like you have to spend a lot of money in petrol, in water for cleaning the car, you pay a lot for the car park and sometimes travelling by car is really, really difficult to find a good place to park your car. But also, walking has some disadvantages. Sometimes the distances are really big, so at the end you are really tired, if it's summer you can have a heat stroke, in winter you can become ill because of the weather. In our opinion, walking is healthier and more affordable. Also walking, you can observe and admire nature, the landscape; you can get to know new things, like a new restaurant or a new shop. And the most important is that you are helping to save the world and you are not contaminating our precious planet.

The pollution of industry by David, Maria, Paula E and Paula G Nowadays, pollution is a worrying point of society; it's one of the principal causes of climate change. The waste from factories is polluting the air, the water and the land. One example near to Barcelona is the industries of Badalona. A few years ago, these factories polluted the sea a lot. There are some advantages in the world of industry: The main advantage is to produce lots of jobs and people can get a better level of life. Another point to these advantages is that factories are a major economic sector because it generates a lot of money for the country. This money helps to provide buildings and healthcare. On the other hand it also has disadvantages like they pollute the air and as a result people breathe polluted air. On these remote areas of the world are affected indirectly by industrial pollution. Even though society may not live near any factories, it is still affected. This is one of the most important problems in the world. If the air is polluted, parts of nature like trees, animals, and so on, will disappear. In conclusion, although industry produces lots of jobs, the air is bad and people breathe in the bad air. If we change the world, it will be better. We think there are more disadvantages than advantages, so what should we do to change it?

The Blind Date by Maria Balañá & Valentina Bohórquez Alice knew that it was going to be a very special day for her. She had always wanted to have a nice relationship. ‘’Please help me, prepare me a blind date with a nice boy’’, said Alice to her best friend. Alice had blue eyes, curly, black long hair. She was average height and she was a friendly and outgoing girl. When she arrived at the Italian restaurant, she looked for her date and then Alice saw him – A brown eyed boy with black trendy hair. He seemed good looking. Alice knew she had started her special day. She sat down in front of him with shyness and said “Hello”. Joe was a very handsome guy; he was very nice and extroverted. He had been working as a summer camp monitor. They were talking about their lives all kind of things; they were getting on very well together. After being all the evening together, Joe said “Alice, I’m going on a voyage and I like you. Would you like to have a crazy adventure in Italy with me?” “Yes”, said Alice.

Alice's Revenge by Oriol Julió and Bruno Dols Alice knew that it was going to be a very special day for her. She had been preparing the 100m race for the last three years, so she was in perfect form. Her opponent, called Serena, who was from Jamaica had also been preparing the race for about two or three years. They had met in the Athletics World Championships celebrated in Barcelona last year. They had became good friends but since the incidents occurred in the Jamaican Championships, they were enemies. That time Serena was the winner, but Alice asked for revenge. Both were tall, strong and very fast. They were hard-working and hyperactive persons too. A summer night in Kingston(Jamaica), the competition had come. The starting gun started the race and Alice took a slightly advantage to Serena. It seemed that Alice was going to win the race, but at the last moment, Serena did a final sprint and won the race… Two months later, judges condemned Serena for two years in prison for being doped in the race, and they also gave the first prize to Alice. She was the most happy person on the world.

A Mysterious Message by Marta Gangonells A Mysterious Message by Marta Gangonells & Maria Hernández Maria HernándezAlice knew that it was going to be a very special day for her. When she woke up she switched on her new modern mobile phone and she saw that she had a new message. She was surprised about it because the message said: “I think I love you, Alice”. But Alice didn’t know who the person who had sent the message was. Then she decided to answer the message asking who he was. Ten minutes later she received another message which it said: “If you want to know who I am you have to go to the old shoes factory at 9 p.m.”. Alice was fifteen years old and she was a little shy, although she was keen on adventures so she decided to go there and meet the mysterious guy. At the time they had arranged, Alice was in the factory nervous and interested about the boy because she had been thinking who it could be. Maybe it was a joke or perhaps she could rely on him. She was looking forward to seeing him. Suddenly, she saw the lights on inside the factory she made up her mind to go in the factory and… “SURPRISE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALICE”, shouted her friends. Alice was so exited that she couldn’t speak. She had been all the day thinking and worried about someone who didn’t exiist.
Alice's Lesson by Seán Moore, Oriol Nadal, Miguel Recio Alice knew that it was going to be a very special day for her. It was the 13th of July, it was very hot. Alice had been training for the racing event since winter. It was the European sports event, she was hoping to give a good show and her only objective was the gold medal. The race would start in an hour. Alice was really nervous and she couldn’t stop thinking in her defeat. All the best European athletes were there, even the world champion Rafaella Bunnotti. The race was going to start and Alice and the other competitors were warming up. She was warming up so hard, her body overstressed and her leg went stiff. She started to cry, she didn’t want to give up, but the pain was so strong, she had to abandon. That day, Alice learned a very special thing – play for fun and not for the prize.

Our FCE2 course is for students who are preparing to take the Cambridge First Certificate exam. By the end of the course, the students will have had a lot of practice in all parts of the exam and should be ready to sit the exam. We recommend that students take the First Certificate in English for Schools if possible, which follows exactly the same format as the First Certificate in English exam and is exactly the same level. The only difference is that the content and treatment of topics has been particularly targeted at the interests and experience of school pupils rather than adults. This increases the students' motivation to learn English Lil & Karen
We have had two First Certificate classes this summer, studying hard to prepare themselves for the exam. After successfully completing this course, many students take our First Certificate Express course before taking the exam in December.
Sarah, Karen, Lili & James, our teachers of FCE this summer all have a lot of experience preparing students for this exam, and have also worked as official FCE examiners too. This ensures that the students are fully prepared for the exam.
Others join the CAE1 course and start preparing for the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). More about the First Certificate in English The FCE exam uses real-life situations that are especially designed to help learners communicate effectively and learn the language skills required for work or study. The exam is set at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages. B2 is the level needed to live independently in an English speaking country and work in an English speaking environment. The FCE is accepted by thousands of employers, universities and governement departments around the world.

First Certificate 2 The FCE2 students have been using a wiki for their writing, submitting their compositions online and then receiving feedback from the teachers. On the following pages, you can see a selection of writing, complete with codes so that the students can go back and correct their own mistakes.
Codes for the FCE2 writing
The advantage of doing this is that the students are more likely to learn from their mistakes this way than if the teacher simply gives them the answers The codes to the writing can be fond on this page, on the right. .
The teacher and FCE2 students have been helping each other with their writing too, adding comments on the wiki, such as the one Alex and Nacho wrote about Maria and Berta's report (below)

Maria's comments (left) about Sergi's report were very useful. This way, students can learn to write better and help each other with their writing
