I believe it’s worth mentioning that we have strict policies on child protection and our premises undergo rigorous health and safety inspections. By encouraging children to talk, play and interact with each other in a natural and enjoyable way, we help them practise their speaking, listening, reading and writing without feeling they’re being taught.

In Spain, we have offices in Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia. We teach English to adults and children in all those places. Madrid Young Learners is based in the city centre at Paseo General Martinez Campos, 31 and there are branches in Segovia, Somosaguas and Villaviciosa. We also give lessons in a number of schools and kindergartens across Madrid. It’s a big family with students all over Madrid from as young as 2 years old upwards. As well as teaching English, we also organise and run the kind of examinations many students will need to take to show universities and employers how good their English is. My name is Mush Mohamed and in my role here at Madrid Young Learners I look after the health and safety of both parents and students whilst you are here in our centre. I am also responsible for customer relations and for the courses we run at our partner schools. Each of our October to June and summer intensive courses represents one part of a programme of study that will assist your child in becoming proficient in English.

Cada uno de nuestros cursos de octubre a junio e intensivos de verano representa una parte de un plan de estudios que ayudará a su hijo a dominar el inglés.

Normally students will go up to the next level at the end of a course unless their marks from continuous assessment and/or formal exams show they haven’t met the course objectives. In this case they will have to repeat the same level before they can progress further through the academic structure.

This is our newest department at Madrid Young Learners dedicated to our youngest students. In this department we have four levels: Storytime 1 and Storytime 2 (2-3 year-olds) held in our partner schools in and around Madrid and Koalas and Pandas (4-5 year-olds). Our main focus in Early Years is to exploit a natural curiosity and a desire to discover and learn using a wide variety of dynamic classroom activities which include story-based lessons with authentic children’s literature, art and craft as well as song and dance to develop aspects of language such as rhyme, rhythm and narrative in a fun and natural way. Our holistic approach allows the children to develop their self-confidence and self-awareness in a safe and welcoming atmosphere.

Este es el departamento más reciente en Madrid Young Learners dedicado a nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. En este departamento tenemos 4 niveles: Storytime 1 y 2 (2 a 3 años e impartidos en nuestras escuelas asociadas tanto dentro como en los alrededores de Madrid) Koalas y Pandas (4-5 años). Nuestro principal objetivo en el Departamento de Infantil es exprimir la curiosidad natural y el deseo de descubrir y aprender, usando una amplia variedad de actividades dinámicas en el aula, que incluyen clases basadas en historias con literatura, arte y artesanía para niños, así como canciones y baile para desarrollar aspectos del lenguaje tales como la rima, el ritmo y la narrativa de una manera natural y divertida. Nuestro enfoque holístico permite que los niños desarrollen la confianza y la conciencia de sí mismos en un ambiente seguro y acogedor.

JUNIOR This is divided into seven levels from Elementary up to level 6 and while the students learn more grammar and vocabulary and continue to develop the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, there is a continued emphasis on oral communication. Continuous assessment tasks are integrated into normal lessons.

Se divide en siete niveles desde elementary hasta el nivel 6 y, aunque los alumnos aprenden más gramática y vocabulario y continúan desarrollando las aptitudes básicas de comprensión lectora, expresión escrita, expresión oral y comprensión oral, se incide más en la comunicación oral. SENIOR PRIMARY | PRIMARIA This is divided into 4 levels, starting with Tigers for 6 year-olds and then Pink, Red and Yellow depending on individual student ability. In these levels lots of importance is given to the stimulation of the child’s oral and aural skills. One of our fundamental aims is to develop a positive attitude towards English as something enjoyable and we try to ensure that the children have a good time in class. There is a gradual introduction of more and more reading and writing.

Se divide en 4 niveles, empezando con los Tigers para los de seis años y luego Pink, Red y Yellow, dependiendo de la capacidad individual de los alumnos. En estos niveles se da mucha importancia a la estimulación de las aptitudes orales y auditivas del niño. Uno de nuestros objetivos fundamentales es desarrollar una actitud positiva hacia el inglés como algo divertido e intentamos asegurar que el niño se lo pase bien en clase. A medida que avanzan se va incorporando más lectura y escritura.

During the academic year there are nine levels from Senior 2 up to Senior 10. Students continue to improve their accuracy in grammar and pronunciation, expand their vocabulary and develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Levels 6, 8 and 10 are specifically orientated at preparing students for the internationally recognised Cambridge exams of FCE, CAE and CPE respectively. We have structured our timetable to accommodate the different needs of our students bearing in mind they are still at school. Our priority is to ensure that all students are assigned to a group which corresponds to their age and level but we cannot guarantee that all levels are available at all times.

Timetable

The summer course programmes are just the same as those for the academic year in terms of content and methodology, but take place over four intensive weeks for five hours a day. These courses are currently offered to students aged between seven and eighteen. Students aged between four and six can attend our Somosaguas centre. Students who attend the course during the academic year and wish to do a summer course will receive a recommendation from their teacher about which course would be most suitable for them. New students will be assigned to a level on the basis of a placement test.

El programa de los cursos de verano es el mismo que el del curso académico en cuanto a contenidos y metodología, pero se imparte de forma intensiva a lo largo de cuatro semanas durante cinco horas al día. Actualmente estos cursos se ofrecen a alumnos de entre siete y dieciocho años. Los alumnos de cuatro a seis años pueden asistir a nuestro centro de Somosaguas. Los alumnos que asistan a clase durante el curso académico y deseen realizar un curso de verano recibirán una recomendación de su profesor sobre el curso más adecuado para ellos. Los alumnos nuevos serán asignados a una clase partiendo de una prueba de nivel.

JUNIOR AND SENIOR SKILLS COURSES: Junior Skills

We offer courses at Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels. There are two courses at each level except Advanced with different topics and readers. The courses are based on materials which have been produced by our own teams of teachers who have used all their knowledge and experience to create stimulating, interesting and motivating classes using a variety of interactive materials.

Senior Skills

These courses help our students develop communication skills and/or write in a creative and unique way. We offer three levels: Intermediate, UpperIntermediate and Advanced. The lessons are fun and varied and will also boost students’ confidence as well as enrich their vocabulary and general ability to communicate in English. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In all British Council centres, health and safety are of the utmost importance. Every course we organise fire drills and inform our students about the evacuation routes in case of emergency.

At the British Council we do everything possible to ensure that classes always have the same teacher. If for some reason this is not possible, we try to make sure that classes have the same substitute teacher. Although we do all we can to ensure consistency in the substitution of classes, sometimes circumstances beyond our control, e.g. illness, make this impossible.

We have a nurse on hand to attend to children. We would be grateful if new students could inform him / her of any specific health issues on 91 337 3604 / 680 426 125.

Groups are formed based on levels assigned either following level tests or the recommendation of the teacher of the previous course. We also try to make sure that students in a class are of as similar an age as possible. We cannot comply with requests to ensure that students are placed with their friends in certain groups due to both the size of the centre and our belief that meeting new students forms an important part of personal development and maturity.

The British Council coordinates with the British Embassy to guarantee the security of staff and customers. Although it may be tedious sometimes, the control of people entering the premises is fundamental to maintaining a minimum level of security. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience that this may cause and remember that it is for the benefit of everyone.

Students follow courses of preparation for Cambridge exams in the following levels: Level 6 – Preparation for the First Certificate in English (FCE) Level 8 – Preparation for the Cambridge Advanced in English (CAE) Level 10 – Preparation for the Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)

Please write a short note in your child’s notebook. They should show this to the teacher and Customer Services who will stamp it. Without this stamp the security guards will not allow a student to leave the premises.

The vast majority of our students are well-behaved and there are few problems of discipline. If there is a problem, the teacher will take a student to a manager who will issue a verbal warning and inform parents if they deem it necessary. In more serious cases parents will be invited to the centre to help find a solution to the problem. Only in extreme cases will we be obliged to expel or suspend students depending on the seriousness of the situation.

If a student is finding a class too easy or difficult, the first person to talk to is the teacher. They will decide if your child should see a senior teacher who will give him / her a level test and get in touch with the parents to inform them of the result. If a student has attended a course outside the British Council or abroad and feels they have advanced significantly, they can request a level test to see if they have reached a sufficient level to go into the next course.

En todos los centros del British Council el tema de salud y seguridad es de suma relevancia. En cada curso realizamos simulacros de incendios e informamos a los alumnos sobre las rutas de salida en caso de emergencia.

Contamos con uno/a enfermero/a para atender a los alumnos. Agradecemos que los alumnos que asisten al centro por primera vez y tienen algún problema de salud se pongan en contacto con nuestra enfermería en el teléfono 913 373 604 o en el móvil 680 426 125.

¿Qué sucede si el profesor no se encuentra bien?

Los grupos se forman teniendo en cuenta el nivel asignado en la prueba de nivel o en el caso de los alumnos de cursos anteriores, el nivel indicado por el profesor al finalizar el curso anterior. También intentamos que los alumnos de una clase tengan una edad lo más parecida posible. No podemos atender a las peticiones para garantizar que los alumnos estén con sus amigos en determinados grupos debido al tamaño del centro y a nuestra convicción de que conocer a nuevos alumnos forma una parte importante del desarrollo y la madurez personal.

El British Council está coordinado con la Embajada Británica para garantizar la seguridad a sus clientes y empleados. Aunque en ocasiones puede ser tedioso, el control de las personas que acceden a nuestras instalaciones es fundamental para mantener un nivel mínimo de seguridad. Rogamos disculpen las molestias que esta norma les pueda suponer, pero recuerden que es en beneficio de todos.

Por favor, escriba una nota en el cuaderno del alumno. El alumno deberá mostrarla al profesor y en la oficina de Atención al Cliente se la sellarán. Sólo así el guardia de seguridad le permitirá salir del centro.

La mayoría de los alumnos tiene un buen comportamiento y sólo en contadas ocasiones surgen problemas de disciplina. En estos casos el profesor llevará al alumno ante la dirección del centro y el alumno recibirá un aviso verbal y se informará a los padres si se considera necesario. En los casos más serios nos reuniremos con los padres para intentar buscar una solución al problema. Sólo en casos extremos nos veremos obligados a expulsar al alumno temporal o indefinidamente dependiendo de la gravedad de la situación.

Si un alumno encuentra un nivel demasiado fácil o difícil, la primera persona con la que debe hablar es con su profesor. Éste decidirá si su hija/o debe hablar con un jefe de estudios para que le evalúe de nuevo y nos pondremos en contacto con los padres para informarles del resultado. Si el alumno asiste a un curso en otro centro que no pertenece al British Council o en el extranjero y cree que ha avanzado bastante, puede solicitar una prueba de nivel para saber si ha alcanzado un nivel suficiente para pasar al siguiente curso.

Cuando te matriculas en nuestro centro, tienes derecho a utilizar el centro de recursos y tomar en préstamo todo tipo de materiales como libros, DVDs, revistas y libros con audios. Contamos con 22.000 recursos y una amplia variedad de servicios y actividades para todos los niveles.

You will have the opportunity to come to the resource centre with your class to work on a project, solve quizzes, use reference books, language practice programs and computer games, participate in reading and writing programmes (e.g. you can be a member of the Reading Circle and improve your reading, writing and speaking skills), borrow support materials, use our web pages or you can come on your own for private study.

Además tendrás la oportunidad de venir con tu clase para trabajar en proyectos, utilizar libros de referencia, programas informáticos, juegos para practicar gramática y vocabulario y participar en programas de lectura y escritura (puedes ser miembro del Círculo de Lectores y Escritores y mejorar tu compresión lectora, expresión oral y escrita). We have our own portal for students. This is a website which students can access from home via the Internet.

THE PORTAL | EL PORTAL

The web Portal provides a safe space for learners to participate in online activities, communicate with their teacher and use learner support materials. Parents can use it to communicate and book meetings with their child’s teacher, access academic reports and reserve places on our courses. The Portal provides information about activities and competitions in the centre and displays digital publications and examples of students’ work, as well as links to other British Council online resources such as http://learnenglish. britishcouncil.org/. The Portal is accessible via https://spainportal.britishcouncil. org . If you have any questions, please contact MadridYL.Portal@ britishcouncil.es.

Contamos con nuestro propio portal para los alumnos. Se trata de una página web a la que los alumnos pueden acceder desde casa a través de Internet.

THE YEARBOOK | EL ANUARIO

The YearBook is a record of the best student work of the year. It is written by students of all levels for students of all levels. You too can have your work in the YearBook! If you think your work is good enough, show it to your teacher and ask that it be considered for publication. As you can see from this year’s YearBook, there is a huge variety of articles so you can really write about anything you like. If it is original and interesting, it will be published in next year’s YearBook. Remember for more information, ask your teacher. David Kavanagh YearBook Editor

El Anuario es una recopilación de los mejores trabajos del año de los alumnos. Está escrito por alumnos de todos los niveles para estudiantes de todos los niveles. ¡Tu trabajo también puede aparecer en el Anuario!

El Portal web proporciona un espacio seguro para que los estudiantes participen en actividades online, se comuniquen con su profesor y usen materiales de apoyo. Los padres pueden usar el Portal para reservar citas con el profesor, como medio de comunicación con él, para acceder a los informes académicos de sus hijos/as y para renovar matrículas de nuestros cursos.

Si consideras que tu trabajo es lo suficientemente bueno, muéstraselo a tu profesor y pídele que lo tenga en cuenta para su publicación.

El Portal ofrece información sobre las actividades y las competiciones en el centro y presenta nuestras publicaciones digitales y ejemplos de trabajos de nuestros alumnos; así como enlaces a otros recursos online del British Council tales como http://learnenglish.britishcouncil. org/ . Puede acceder al portal en https://spainportal.britishcouncil.org .

Como podrás ver en la edición de este año del Anuario hay una gran variedad de artículos, así que puedes escribir sobre cualquier cosa que te guste. Si es original y es interesante, será publicado en el Anuario del próximo año.

Parents can also register their children for new courses. If you have any difficulties, please send an email to: madridyl.portal@britishcouncil.es.
