A year on... Katie Alexandra Scott

Star of Somerford Park and first-time national champion, Katie Alexandra Scott won the HorseQuest Elementary Silver and Bettalife Novice Silver with Liverpool KS at the LeMieux Nationals last year.

BD team member Anna Chadfield caught up with Katie to see what the year has been like for her, what new goals she’s set her sights on and what we can expect at this year’s Nationals.

What are your reflections following your win at nationals last year?

It was surreal. Last year was really my first full year of competing in terms of trying to qualify for regional and national championships. Honestly, I was just over the moon to be riding in a competition that I had only ever dreamt of riding in as I watched from the gallery cheering on some of my

heroes. To not only qualify but to take home two national titles, as well as my four-year-old Ariel (owned by Tracey Price) finishing third in the UK four-year-old finals, was just unbelievable.

The experience was unforgettable, my dad who has always been my biggest supporter was there to watch and on the evening of winning the second title, when my partner and I got to the hotel

Meet Katie Alexandra Scott

room, we just sat in silent disbelief. We started this journey only four years ago with Junior (Liverpool KS) as my first horse bought from unbacked, so sat in that hotel room four years on with not one but two nationals we were both very emotional.

I am very fortunate to have amazing support around me. From family/owners Tracey Price and Annabelle Davies, to incredibly the hard-working team who help look after mine and the liveries’ horses. One of my girls, Laura Minshall, has been with me for about 12 years and I am extremely lucky to have met her. Without these people, I wouldn’t be able to continue this journey.

What have you and Liverpool KS been working towards since then?

After last year’s nationals, Junior enjoyed a well-deserved holiday living out with his friends (as all my horses do) and when coming back to work, the girth showed me exactly how much had enjoyed his time away.

We have always had a goal of competing in the young horse PSG so have been working on Junior’s changes, he had cracked the flying part… but the change… well that needed some work!

He is currently enjoying them very much and last month did his first ever line of fours so we are super happy with how he’s coming on.

What other stars do you have in the stables?

I am super excited about Knight my five-year-old Charmeur gelding owned by Annabelle. He won a young horse class this year with a huge score and is currently competing at Elementary. At home, he finds things so easy, even his flying changes are pretty much confirmed already.

We also have a super exciting Stallion, Power KS (Spielberg x Tango) who really does suit his name! Another exciting prospect is a three-year-old colt (Negro x Sir Donnerhall)

coming in for backing this winter by Greg Simms and Stena Hoerner. I love taking my time working with young horses as they are so rewarding, so next year is going to be really exciting.

What are your personal highlights for 2024 to date?

I have always wanted to watch the Olympics so this year my partner surprised me with a weekend away to Paris with tickets to watch both medal days and it was an experience I will never forget. Team GB were amazing and Becky Moody… you are a legend!

We also sold our first homebred Winnie (KS Madrid) to our close friends Helen and John. Those who know me will know how I feel about selling my babies, but this was the perfect scenario because they happen to keep their horses at my stables meaning Winnie is staying with us!

What do the Nationals mean to you and what are your hopes for this year’s?

Where else can competitors, who have full-time jobs and ride one horse, compete at the same competition as some of the best riders in the world, world record holders and gold medallists?

It just doesn’t happen, and well, I think that’s magical. How can that not inspire you when you are warming up next to some of the best riders in the world? I feel that it’s truly unique and something that cannot be replicated.

This year I’m heading to Nationals again with Junior and I am honestly just hoping for another amazing experience for both him and me. Every time I get to ride this special horse, I feel incredibly grateful, so no matter what we do, or how we get on, I will be doing it smiling.

For me, that is what dressage is all about.

Listen to Laura

Olympic medallist Laura Tomlinson presents this year’s LeMieux Masterclass. Listen to a legend of the game talk through her greatest training advice and exercises in the LeMieux Arena across the weekend.

Laura Tomlinson’s riding journey began at the agre of three years old, where she had a keen interest in jumping as a young person. She began to concentrate on dressage in her teens, and her international career really took off at the age of 14, where she was part of the silver medal winning team at the Pony European Championships.

Laura progressed through the FEI age groups, earning successful appearances on Junior and Young Rider European Championship teams.

Her first senior team appearance came in 2006, where she competed in the iconic Aachen stadium with Douglas Dorsey. A year later, her senior team debut would follow with Mistral Hojris; the duo having

previously represented Great Britain at the Young Rider Europeans in 2005, collecting a team bronze medal.

Alf would be Laura’s horse of a lifetime. She describes it as ‘love at first sight’ when she first set eyes on Alf in a video. Their journey together would lead Laura to her first Olympic Games, as part of the team competing in Beijing 2008.

This experience led to a serious senior breakthrough, as the following year Laura went on to win team silver and individual bronze at the FEI European Championships held in Windor, Great Britain. Next, individual silver and team silver would follow at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 and a year later the team would go one better for gold at a

memorable European Championships. Laura and Alf’s defining moment came in 2012, where they were part of the gold medal winning team and rode to a magical individual bronze medal. The memory will without doubt last a lifetime for Laura and those who witnessed a history making moment. Multiple National Champion Laura now commits her career to finding her next ‘Alf’, with a stable of talented horses and an exciting breeding programme at her Gloucestershire home. She also balances her time between horses and family life, as a proud mother to four young children and wife to Mark.

Laura’s enthuisasm for sport and family life is infectious, and her masterclass will be one for all to enjoy.

From Somerford to Versailles

The atmospheric rise of Becky Moody and Jagerbomb has been the story of the decade so far for many a dressage fan. We recap on the past twelve months for the combination, from Somerford to Versailles.

Throughout her career, Yorkshire rider, Becky Moody has persistently committed herself to getting the best out of her horses. Aboard her home-bred prodigy

Jagerbomb (Dante Weltino OLD x Jazz) who she co-owns with longtime supporter Jo Cooper, 2024 has seen her years of hard work and determination pay off.

LeMieux Nationals 2023

Twelve months ago, Becky Moody presented

Jagerbomb in his first attempt at the National Champion title, the show was the outset of a memorable year of progress and success. It’s safe to remark that the LeMieux National Championships at Somerford was Becky’s and her then nine-year-old Jagerbomb’s first breakthrough moment. Their sensational performance in the Kudos Grand Prix Freestyle secured the win with an exceptional score of 77.925%.

Despite being Jagerbomb’s first season at Grand Prix, their demanding but confident performance, accompanied by the fun and catchy compilation of Tom Jones hits certainly got everyone taking notice. The young horse looking so comfortable and happy at this level was a testament to Becky’s skill for getting the best out of her horse.

Just a few months on the duo once again captured our hearts competing in their first London International Horse

Show and FEI Dressage World Cup qualifier. Becky and Jagebomb’s distinctive Tom Jones accompanied programme made an impression, with 83.675%, beating their previous PB by 3.685%. The result was top three worthy, completing a all-British female podium in the company of Charlotte Dujardin and Lottie Fry.

Completely at ease in the incredible atmosphere of this iconic Christmas show, Jagerbomb once again gave a promising performance at a big occasion. This performance was one that started to make Paris really feel like a possibility for the pair. When asked about her plans for 2024 at the show, Becky replied; “He is still young. Of course, everybody is a little bit thinking ‘Paris’, but it’s a team of three. That’s a pretty tough one to crack because we have an incredible group of riders at the top, so we will be quietly thinking about that reserve space,” she smiled. “I just want to do the best for him, give him the best year that he can have.”

Spring success

At the end of February 2024, Becky continued to impress at Jagerbomb’s first overseas international at Lier CDI in Belgium. The now 10-year-old gelding once again took the atmosphere of a top international show in his stride and took third place on the podium in the CDI4* Grand Prix on 72.543%. Next up was Jagerbomb’s first attempt at the complex Grand Prix Special; here the duo narrowly missing out on first place, scoring an impressive 74.596%.

Their next major milestone would be in March at Addington CDI, the traditional season opener of the UK-based international competitions. The combination took the competition by storm as they were voted the unanimous winner across all five judges for both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special classes. The exciting combination continued to prove their upward trajectory, achieving personal best scores in both classes: 75.457% in the Grand Prix, before going on to earn

an impressive 76.191% in the Grand Prix Special. Taking another step closer to Paris, the spring season saw a visit to France as part of the Nations Cup team travelling to Compiegne CDIO in May. For the first time amongst some of the sport’s real bit hitters, the duo continued their superb run and produced two tests leaving Becky amongst the very top of the standings. In the Grand Prix, they earned 73.804% for sixth place, before achieving a runner up position in the Grand Prix Special with 74.298%.

The final stop before securing their ticket to Paris was CHIO Rotterdam in the Netherlands where Becky added to their increasingly strong international record earning seventh spot in the Grand Prix with 73.609%, third place

on a score of 74.681% in the Grand Prix Special. Rotterdam is something of a crucible of dressage in the Netherlands, so to travel here and be amongst the placings is a sure-fire sign of something special.

To Versailles

July would see Becky, now world number 15, and Jagerbomb setting off to Versailles as the team reserve. A lifelong ambitition achieved for a Yorkshire lass and her home-bred. Preparing to be a reserve rider is a challenging mindset to master, and this was thrown into practice as unexpected circumstances saw Becky stepped up to become Team GB’s third member.

She went on to produce an

inspired Olympic debut. Looking right at home performing on the sport’s biggest stage, Becky delivered a new PB of 76.489% in their Grand Prix Special test, helping to secure the team a place on the podium and a bronze medal.

The combination grew in confidence with each performance, and captured the hearts of many who enjoyed watching the pair perfom together, some likely for the first time.

Carl Hester shared his feelings of pride for Becky and Bomb: “Becky Moody, being the newest star to hit the Olympics, has been amazing. I’m so excited for her to see her produce a performance like that. It was very emotional for me. It’s very competitive and

I would not want to be one of those last riders in the next group!”

On the final day, a packed out crowd were privileged to watch Becky and Jagerbomb’s iconic freestyle. A beautifully ridden test was inspiring to watch and was applauded by the judges who rewarded a very well-deserved total of 84.357%, a new PB in this test. What a place to do it.

Becky and Bomb reflect a very British success. Bred and trained at home, competed across the BD summer and winter seasons, gaining experience and titles. Their stratospheric rise is a deserved one, one of determination and grit. From the Yorkshire rain to dancing in front of the home of the Sun King. What a journey.

EQUISOFT GIRTH

The Equi-Soft® Saddle Girth: Maximum freedom of movement and breathing for your horse

The Equi-Soft® Saddle Girth is an innovation for horses and riders that offers a unique combination of benefits:

Elastic Rings: The elastic rings of the Equi-Soft girth expand and contract with the horse's breathing, ensuring constant and uniform pressure distribution. This allows the horse to expand its chest comfortably.

Uniform Pressure Distribution: The girth's ergonomic and fan-shaped design wraps around the chest from below and slightly to the sides, offering freedom of movement while significantly reducing girthiness

Stress Reduction during Girth Tightening: The elastic rings of the Equi-Soft reduce girth pressure, minimizing stress levels in the horse

Lower Heart Rate: A scientific study on various girths demonstrated that all horses showed a significantly lower heart rate when using the Equi-Soft girth

Guest Profile Abi Lyle

After coming from a non-horsey background and finally convincing her parents to buy a horse after completing her GCSE’s, Abi Lyle’s perseverance and passion have driven her incredible career trajectory.

This accomplished International Dressage Rider, originally from Co Down but now based in the Cotswolds, recently rode down the centre line as Ireland’s sole dressage representative at the 2024 Paris Olympics aboard her 2022 World Championship ride Giraldo (“Arty”) which she owns with Caroline Clarry.

Abi trained under Carl Hester and, in a horse and hound interview, credits him for having a big influence on her career over the 13 years he coached her, helping her succeed at international level. She now trains a diverse string of horses, ranging from International Grand Prix

champions to promising youngsters.

The Olympics was something that Abi initially had not imagined for herself, saying: “I can’t wait to get into the ring with the love of my life tomorrow and do something I never thought possible for me” before riding her Olympic test. Abi first started riding this special career-defining horse when he was four years old and just recently backed. Despite not starting with any expectations of being Olympic contenders, she built a strong partnership with Giraldo and developed him through to the Grand Prix, allowing her to realise her Olympics dreams and head to Paris.

“I wanted Arty to be able to rely on me. As soon as we went in, the connection I felt with him was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I know it sounds cliche, but it was like we were the only two in the

world in that ring. We went into our own little bubble and he did every single thing I asked him. If I never have a ride like that again I’ll die happy.”

Abi’s other notable achievements include both national and international victories, particularly on her two Grand Prix horses, Giraldo and Farrell. Her big breakthrough was competing in the World Championships in Denmark in 2022 as a key member of Team Ireland. She then went on to break the 70% barrier and achieve a top 10 placings at the London Excel in 2022 and 2023.

As well as the 37th placing at the Olympics, this season, her results include winning the freestyle and finishing third in the grand prix and at Addington CDI3*, she bagged fifth place in the Le Mans CDI4* freestyle in May and claimed fourth place in Hartpury’s CDI3* Grand Prix Special.

The Judge at C Meet Richard Baldwin

Trainers and riders often use the knowledge they’ve acquired to venture into the hugely reponsible yet rewarding role of judging. The judges at the National Championships play a vital role in the success of the event.

Richard Baldwin is a former competitor and current trainer who’s forged a highly successful judging career, progressing systematically through the levels to reach List 1 in 2019 at the age of just 36.

We caught up with Richard, who lives in Warwickshire, to find out more about his view from the judge’s box.

Q: Who or what motivated you to start judging?

A: I fell in love with dressage because of my love of training horses not really because of competing. I became obsessed, and still am, about training horses and this naturally led me into being interested in Judging to further this knowledge. The horse will always be my motivation to keep going and keep improving, and to them I will always be grateful.

Q: What are the main changes you’ve noticed in the sport since you began judging?

A: I’ve noticed the changes in the training of horses over the years and the changes with how the horses are judged in accordance with this. I’ve seen this country grow from

strength to strength within the sport and am proud to be a part of it now and in the future.

Q: The most memorable moment of your career so far?

A: Judging a Grand Prix with three FEI 5* judges and one 4* judge (including mentors Clive Halsall and Stephen Clarke) at Somerford Premier League and judging a masterclass ride from Carl Hester on En Vogue. There were a few 10s!

Q: What are the greatest rewards?

A: The greatest reward is watching riders’ dreams come true with a happy harmonious horse and test. To judge a test where there is true harmony and friendship between rider and horse is a reward in itself.

Q: What would you say to anyone considering becoming a judge?

A: There is so much to know with so much time, money and commitment needed but I wouldn’t change it for anything else.

Q: Your best piece of advice to anyone riding down the centre line?

A: You’re on your own journey, produce the best you can on that day. There’s always another day if it goes wrong, just smile, and pat the horse no matter what the result is.

Q: If you won a vacation to anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go and why?

A: Anywhere sunny, relaxed and somewhere that all the great friends I have made over the years can come to and enjoy the time with. I love my judging, but I also love the time I spend with my colleagues that I am honoured to call my friends worldwide and at home.

Medal moments

Welcome home our medallists from a memorable summer of sport. The medal parade takes place in the LeMieux Arena on Saturday 14 September at 16.00, supported by Sytner Land Rover Knutsford.

Britain’s success overseas has seen new achievements completed and more medallists made.

At the first FEI Championship of the summer, Annabella Pidgley achieved her second outright FEI European Champion title, adding the U25 accolade to last year’s Young Rider success. The FEI U25 & Young Rider European Championships also saw the British team take to the podium, as Isobel Lickley, Oliver Gould, Hermione Tottman and India Durman-Mills earned a bronze medal at Young Rider level - the second in two years for BD.

Aberdeen teen Abigail Gray followed in the footsteps of Phoebe Peters to become Britain’s second ever FEI Pony European Champion. With George Clooney B.S. Abigail brought individual silver and freestyle gold home from the European Championships held at Sentower Park in Belgium.

At the same show, history was made. Gloucestershire’s Ella-Grace Dovey became Britain’s first ever Children on Horses European Champion, taking to the top step of the individual podium with David Pincus’ wonderful gelding Sheepcote Jackson.

Next up was team bronze for the senior team taking to the Olympic stage in Versailles. Carl Hester, Charlotte Fry and Becky Moody produced magical performances in front of a fairytale setting. Lottie would also go on to individual bronze with Glamourdale.

The Para team had a tough act to follow but also delivered the goods. It was individual bronze all-round for Georgia Wilson, Sophie Wells and Natasha Baker. With all three riders going on to earn freestyle medals too.

Performances across the board to be proud of.

The Future Young Horse Preview

The KBIS Young Horse Championships are a highlight of the LeMieux Nationals, we look at some of the runners and riders for this year’s finale, and meet the judges assessing the stars of the future.

Four year olds

The four year old class takes place on Friday 13 September in the Kudos Arena. With a format change this year, combinations will ride the BD National Test for Four Year Olds with just one round deciding the title. This age group will be under the watchful eyes of Spencer Wilton and Isobel Wessels. Isobel provides a world class perspective to the class, fresh from her role as part of the ground jury panel at Paris 2024.

Five and six year olds

The KBIS titles for five and six year olds will be decided over two days. On Saturday 14 September pre-judging will take place in the Kudos arena where horses will be presented in the preliminary round. The top four horses from the pre-judging will be selected to step forward to Sunday’s grand finale, where the audience will get to look at all four horses alongside one another. Two horses will be selected to be ridden by the rider judge Alex Harrison, with the champion and reserve champion named after the test ride element.

Seven year olds

The LeMieux Arena is the place to be on Saturday morning at the Nationals as the seven year old horses take centre stage. The KBIS seven year old final is the ‘one to watch’ regarding future Grand Prix champions and team superstars. None other than Becky Moody’s Jagerbomb claimed this title in 2021, will we see a future Olympian take the title this year?

Nick Burton, Richard Baldwin and Spencer Wilton will have the money seats in the judges boxes to give the all-important scores.

Gareth Hughes Trainer judge for five year olds

Tokyo 2020 reserve rider and FEI European Championship team gold medallist Gareth Hughes has been a stalwart of British teams for decades. His knowledge and horsemanship makes him a popular trainer of choice, and his talent has seen him train countless horses to Grand Prix level. Gareth will oversee the five year old class as trainer judge alongside Christine Pripp.

Spencer Wilton Trainer judge for four, six and seven year olds

Spencer Wilton etched his name into British Dressage history as part of the silver medal winning team in Rio at the 2016 Olympic Games. Spencer won his first national title in 1999 and has since collected thirteen through the years with multiple rides he’s sympathetically produced. Spencer judges alongside Christine Pripp all week.

Alex Harrison Rider judge for five and six year olds

Alex Harrison has forged a successful British Dressage career, not only as an international rider and trainer, but also a judge. Alex has ridden to Grand Prix and represented Great Britain at the European Championships for Under 25s. His skill sees him take up the role as ride judge for the final of the five and six year old horses in 2024.

Key players

Moody Dressage

Magic Dream already has a strong record, having landed a Prelim title under Anna Burns and placed as runner up as a six year old in 2023 whilst winning the TopSpec Medium. This year Olympic medallist Becky Moody presents the Governor-sired mare in the seven year old class. Anna Burns also returns to ride Becky’s home-bred mare Duende Roo in the four year old competition. Will we see more Moody success?

Hawtins Stud

Gloucesteshire-based team Hawtins Stud, led by Judith Davis, are synonymous with Nationals Young Horse glory.

Their former stars include Hawtins Lirica, who’s gone on to Small Tour success, and Hawtins San Floriana, a now-successful Grand Prix horse.

This year Hawtins Stud will see three of its graduates take on the title challenge.

Tom will show Theodora Livanos’ Elastica PS in the five year old class, as well as Emile Faurie’s Frankie PS in the seven year old title.

Ashley Jenkins

Having trained and ridden for Dan Greenwood, Ashley Jenkins is the consummate professional when it comes to producing stars of the future.
