Curriculum Overview Our curriculum combines the compulsory elements of the Chinese national curriculum and adds essential elements of British education. In secondary, students work towards iGCSE (Grade 10) and A Level examinations (Grade 12) . Prior to that, in Grade 9 students sit the Chinese ZhongKao certifying the completion of their Chinese compulsory education. Most students at Aldwych are expected to go on to study at overseas universities, primarily in the UK and the US. IGCSE and A Level are the most widely recognised university entrance qualifications and provide the most reliable path for entry into top universities. The school guides students in selecting their subject and universities and helps them prepare for any additional examinations that are required, such as IELTS for UK universities or TOEFL, SAT and ACT for US universities. The standards we pursue are essential to the curriculum. Starting in Grade 1, students sit a weekly test in a core area of the curriculum to assess progress and achievement. Evaluations are initially simple and more informal and gradually become more rigorous and formal. Where necessary, extra support is provided so that every student has the opportunity to meet the learning goals. Also starting in Grade 1, we carry out annual external benchmarking tests that complement our internal progress reviews. We provide a range of subjects to intellectually challenge students and help broaden their interests. We offer a wide selection of subjects at iGCSE and A Level including: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Computing, Business Studies, Economics, Music, and Art. Classes are typically taught in groups of up to 20 although students will often do assisted work in smaller groups. English is the principle language of the school and so a high standard of English is required. However, in some cases the school admits able students with lower levels of English and provides the additional language learning support.

Our Teachers 我们的师资 Our global reach and reputation allow us to attract teachers of the highest calibre with a genuine passion for their profession. Aldwych employs teachers with outstanding professional credentials from the UK with relevant experience delivering the English National Curriculum. On occasion, the school will also employ outstanding teachers with other internationally recognised qualifications and British curriculum experience. Each Kindergarten and primary class will be led by a fully qualified British teacher and supported by Chinese teachers and assistants. World Class Campus 世界级校园 Our purpose built campus offers age-appropriate facilities designed to nurture the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of our students. Our classrooms are large, bright and spacious and students have access to a wide range of resources, including interactive whiteboard and mini-suite of computers. Specialist facilities include science laboratories, information and communication technology suites, library, multi-purpose hall, drama studio and art and design rooms. There is also a modern music suite with a computer lab for composing, a rehearsal room for music practice and two well-equipped classrooms. An air filtration system provides fresh, clean and filtered air in every classroom and common area. Students also have access to age appropriate libraries, a 500-seat theatre, music rehearsal rooms, a 2000 square meter indoor gym, a fitness studio, a 25 meter indoor swimming pool and a dance studio. With large open playground and garden areas, students at Aldwych enjoy the use of top of the range playground equipment, multiple basketball and multi-purpose courts, a full-size artificial grass football pitch, a running track, tennis court and infants play area. Aldwych offers full-time and flexible boarding for students from 8 years of age. Boarding is a continuation of the school day and builds further steps toward meeting educational goals. Pastoral Care 教导关怀 At Aldwych we are committed to providing the highest standards of pastoral care to ensure the wellbeing of all our pupils. Pastoral care plays a central part in pupils’ lives during their time at the school, with a team of staff who support and care for them. In Primary School, the class teachers provide a safe and nurturing environment and ensure the welfare of all the children in their class. Class teachers are supported in this work by school counsellors and the academic management team. In the secondary school, every student is assigned a tutor who is responsible for providing support and mentoring to pupils on their overall academic progress, their involvement in the extracurricular programme and guiding their personal development. Boarding 寄宿 Our boarding houses create an environment that nurtures students’ social and educational development and helps them to become more independent. Aldwych boarding facility has the capacity to host 600 students. 48 students live in each house, along with a residential Housemaster or Mistress and three House Tutors. Students live two to a room in modern, spacious and well furnished rooms with en-suite bathrooms. It is very much their home for the term, and a space of their own where they keep their belongings, put up their pictures and can unwind at the end of the day. Extensive recreational areas and common rooms are available for students to socialize, study and relax. Kindergarten 学前教育 The focus of the Kindergarten programme at Aldwych is to prepare children emotionally, socially and intellectually for school and in particular for the challenge of our Primary programme. In the first two years (KG1 and KG2) progress is assessed according to seven key areas of learning: Communication and language, Physical development, Personal, social and emotional development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world, Expressive arts and design Teachers lead children in a mixture of games, guided play and focused activities helping them reach clearly defined developmental goals in each of these areas. Progress is assessed through regular day to day observation In the third year (KG3), the focus on English and Chinese literacy and Mathematics increases to provide a solid foundation for primary school and children start working on small projects. Each kindergarten classroom has an outdoor section so that learning activities can take place both indoors and outdoors. The first five years of childhood have been identified as instrumental in language development, a time when our brains can seamlessly assimilate an extra language. Primary School 小学 Our primary curriculum combines the compulsory elements of the Chinese national curriculum with key elements of the English National Curriculum. Every class has a British teacher and a teacher assistant. Chinese language and mathematics are taught by specialist Chinese teachers. The curriculum has three main aims. Firstly, to meet the goals of the Chinese national curriculum. Secondly, to ensure students become fully bilingual. Thirdly, help students develop the skill of learning through enquiry and problem solving. This is achieved through a combination of traditional instruction and project based learning across a range of subjects. Student do work both individually and in groups. The curriculum provides a well balanced range of subjects that include English, Chinese, Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, Humanities, Art, Music, Sport and Community Work. Extracurricular clubs give students the chance to explore personal interests and pursue activities they enjoy. Our curriculum is rigorous and ambitious. Students are assessed weekly in core areas of the curriculum to ensure sufficient progress is being made. We check overall progress through regular benchmarking exercises. Secondary School 中学 In the first three years of secondary (Grades 7 to 9), students study a wide range of subjects both in English and Chinese. At the end of Grade 9, students sit the Zhongkao certifying their completion of the compulsory cycle of the Chinese curriculum. The focus then shifts to preparation for iGCSE examinations which students sit at the end of Grade 10. In Grades 11 and 12 students follow the A Level programme and prepare for university entrance while also continuing to study Chinese language and literature. Lessons are taught by English and Chinese specialist subject teachers. Tutors guide students with their subject selection for iGCSE and A Level in consultation with the family and the school’s university admissions advisors. Whilst academic performance and exam preparation is a major focus of the secondary programme, Aldwych also aims to give students a wider intellectual preparation for life beyond school. Our approach requires that students learn to enquire more broadly about their subjects of study and how they link to the world outside the classroom. Extra Curricular 课外课程 Integral to school life, extra-curricular activities have an important place alongside academic learning as they enable students to expand their minds, cultivate an interest, or learn something in a more relaxed atmosphere. Extracurricular activities strengthen a wide range of essential life skills for students, including social skills, work ethic, creativity, and time management. Aldwych School organises numerous extra-curricular activities after school, at weekends and in the holidays.
