1. Programme Overview Programme Aims/Rationale Our key aim in introducing 1:1 IPads to our students is to further enhance the outstanding educational practice already taking place. The introduction of IPads will empower students to learn to their full potential and with greater independence. Crucially it will enable us to prepare them for a future that is technology and digitally information rich. We can enhance the role of the teacher by creating content more suited to the individual and enable learning to extend beyond the classroom and develop home school links more successfully. Most importantly by teaching our students about safe and ethical use of technology, we can prepare them to be more responsible users of ICT in the wider community and in the future that inevitably awaits them.
Educational Benefits of iPads • All students, regardless of ability and learning styles, will be able to use iPads to access content specific to their needs. • iPads allow students to solve problems and think critically; learning takes place through collaboration between students, teachers, parents and the wider community. • Educational material can be tailored to the specific needs of individual students. • They improve communication and widen our sense of community by expanding the way teachers, students and parents interact with each other. • Students have a wide range of resources at their fingertips, such as books, dictionaries, diaries, writing implements, calculators, word processors, etc. • Wi-Fi connectivity allows for almost instantaneous and continuous access of infor-mation. The ability to quickly switch between applications makes it easier for students to switch between different modes of learning (i.e. research and creation). • The touch-screen interface allows students to engage more interactively with content. • The iPad’s intuitive design and easy-to-use interface makes it simple for even young children to navigate, thereby optimising the learning experience of all students. • The iTunes App Store offers a vast amount of free or low cost apps with excellent educational content. • Because it is lightweight and portable, the iPad can be used virtually anywhere allowing learning to be extended beyond the classroom. • Children are eager to embrace new technology which improves student engagement in lessons. • The use of digital documents will greatly reduce the amount of printing and photocopying done in school, having a positive effect on the environment.

2. Receiving and Returning iPads Receiving Your iPad iPads will be distributed to students during iPad Orientation. Each student will be issued with an iPad that will remain with them for the duration of their education at BST until the end of Year 9. This is to aid study whilst at the school. Students will be permitted to take the iPads home each day and will also be permitted to keep the iPad during half-term and summer holidays. Before receiving the iPad both the student and parents must sign the 1:1 iPad Agreement Form. The iPad Manager reserves the right to request the iPad be returned at any given time so that updates and maintenance can be carried out Returning Your iPad Students will be required to return their iPad upon completion of their education at BST or at the end their time there. Students will be given the opportunity to purchase their iPad at a cost reflective to the residual value. iPad Orientation Students will receive their iPads during an orientation session. During the session students will be taught about proper use of the iPad and any rules relating to its usage as set out in this document. The orientation session will also have a strong focus on internet safety and will teach the students how to safeguard themselves while using the internet.

3. Caring for your iPad General Precautions • • • • • • •
Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the iPad to prevent damage. The iPads must remain free of labels or stickers. iPads should always be carried in their protective case. Food or drink should not be consumed next to the iPad. iPads should be shut down when not in use to conserve battery life. iPads should never be left in an unsecured, unsupervised area. iPads should not be exposed to extreme temperatures.
Carrying iPads • A protective case will be provided by the school for every iPad. These cases provide sufficient protection for the iPad when it is being carried or transported. • iPads should remain in their protective cases at all times. • Students may only replace the school provided case for one that provides equal or greater protection for the device. Screen Care • • • •
Do not lean on top of the iPad, excess pressure will cause the screen to crack. Do not stack heavy objects, such as books, on top of the iPad. Do not place anything in the protective case that will press against the cover. Do not place items such as pens or pencils on the screen before closing the protective cover. • Clean the screen only with a soft, dry cloth. Do not spray any liquid directly onto the screen
4. Applications and Software Originally Installed Apps and Software Students will receive their iPads installed with a collection of key applications specifically chosen by staff at BST and students are not permitted to remove any of these applications. During the school year teachers may wish for additional applications to be added, these applications will be added to the iPads by the iPad Manager. Regular checks of iPads will be made to ensure that students have not removed required apps. If technical problems occur with any applications, they must be reported to the iPad Manager who will reinstall the application. Students are not permitted to update the iOS software on the iPads without the permission of the iPad Manager.

Requesting Apps Students are not permitted to install any applications onto their iPad. They may re-quest for additional (educational related) apps to be added to their iPad via the App Request Form. These requests should be submitted to the iPad Manager who will install the app upon approval of the request. The iPad Manager reserves the right to deny any app request. Please note that as we will be rolling out iPads with such a large number of year groups, app requests may not be available for the first few weeks of the programme. Organisation of Apps Applications will be organised on the iPads upon installation by the iPad Manager. Students are not permitted to delete or alter any folders or their contents. Syncing iPads Students must not sync their iPads with any computer.

5. iPad Use in School iPads are intended for use at school each day and are expected to be brought to school fully charged. The iPad will be used to access different materials such as apps, documents, presentations, web materials, videos, podcasts, calendars and other information. Students are required to bring their iPad to all classes. Screen Time Screen time will be monitored in school to ensure that our students continue to develop practical and active learning skills beyond the use of ICT. Students will still be encouraged to read real books, write real essays and be actively involved in every area of the curriculum. The use of iPads is intended to be an exciting, additional tool for learning but not as an overnight replacement for more traditional and highly valued methods. In short we advocate a balanced approach to teaching and learning. Forgotten iPads Should a student forget to bring their iPad to school on a given day, they will be permitted to borrow a spare iPad from the Library (if available) if it is required in class. Repeated offenses of forgotten iPads may result in a student losing some iPad privileges. iPads Undergoing Repair If an iPad is being repaired due to a manufactural fault or accidental damage, stu-dents where possible will be loaned a spare iPad for the duration of the repair. Charging the iPads Battery An iPad has an average battery life of 8-10 hours. Therefore, if it is brought to school fully charged, it is expected that it will last the duration of the school day. In cases where use of the iPad has resulted in a loss of charge, wherever possible students will be given the option to re-charge their iPads. Failure to bring IPads to school fully charged on 3 occasions will result in a loss of take-home privileges for one week. Screensavers and Desktop Backgrounds Inappropriate images may not be used for screensavers or desktop backgrounds. Examples of inappropriate images include but are not limited to the presence of guns, weapons, inexplicit material, inappropriate language, alcohol or drugs. Sound and Music Sound should be muted at all times unless permitted by the teacher. Headphones may be worn at the discretion of the teacher. 8

Internet Access Students will have access to the school’s wireless networks. Through the network content is filtered to prevent access to inappropriate material, in addition to this all social networking sites are blocked. Students are only permitted to access the internet during timetabled lessons or during supervised library sessions. Any students found violating the internet access agreement may have their internet rights revoked. Managing and Saving Files It is the students responsibility to save files in a location off the iPad. The school will not be held responsible for any data lost due to mechanical failure or accidental damage of the iPad. Due to memory capacity of iPads, we will be putting in place a facility for students to store documents online. This facility will be ready at the beginning of the next academic year and more detailed information will be sent out about this at that time.

6. iPad Use at Home Intended Use • iPads are provided by the school as an educational tool and should be used in this manner both at school and at home. • Whilst at home, students should use the iPad to support them in completing homework, projects and revision. • It is advised that home usage is limited to a maximum of 2-hours per day. • iPads should be used in a location where use can be monitored and supervised by a parent; unsupervised use is strongly discouraged. Internet Access • Students may connect their iPads to wireless networks within their home. The internet should be used for educational purposes and students are not permitted to use it to access social networking sites. • Students should refrain from using their iPad to connect with anyone outside of the school community unless permission has been obtained from a teacher. This includes commenting on websites, blogs or through the use of email. • It is recommended that all internet access at home is done under the supervision of an adult. • Parents should refer to the internet safety guide accompanying this document for tips on how to keep children safe online.
7. Prohibited Activities • Any actions which violate the school’s Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy. • The changing of iPad settings, with the exception of personal settings such as font size, screen brightness, etc. • Downloading Apps. • Sending inappropriate emails. • Use of chat rooms/sites selling exam papers, assignments or any other form of students work. • Use of social networking sites or messaging services such as Facebook, Skype, MSN Messenger, etc. • illegal installation or transmission of copyrighted materials. • Students must not give out any personal information over the internet unless di-rected by the teacher for educational purposes. This includes but is not limited to: setting up internet accounts, registering for chat rooms, setting up personal email accounts, etc. • Accessing or transmitting materials that are obscene, offensive, threatening, or otherwise intended to harass or demean recipients. • Use of the iPad’s camera to take and/or distribute inappropriate or unethical material.

8. Responsibilities Responsibilities of the School • To provide the tablet in perfect working condition. • To provide opportunities for the use of the tablet whenever it is deemed it will help to improve teaching and learning. • To provide a safe network structure and access to Internet that enables the • comprehensive use of the tablet. • To provide sufficient and adequate training on the use of the tablet, including health/safety precautions and explanation of the Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy. • To ensure the software within the tablet is regularly updated. • To cover the cost of any repairs or software malfunction derived exclusively from manufacturing or inherent software problems. The school is not responsible for covering repairs derived from accidents or misuse of the tablet. • To provide safe storage facilities, to ensure the tablet can be stored safely within the school premises. • To fix the tablet whenever any damages occur or problems with the software arise and attempt to provide a replacement tablet if a spare tablet is available and the repair is extended over a considerable period of time. • Take disciplinary action for any misuse of the tablet or non-compliance with the school’s Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy. Responsibilities of the Student • To take responsibility for the care and safety of the tablet. This includes, but is not limited by: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Not to eat and/or drink near the tablet Not Insert foreign objects (paperclips, pens, etc.) into the ports (openings) of the tablet. To ensure there are no foreign objects on top of the screen Not remove the tablet from its protective cover. Unless placed in secure storage, never leave the tablet unattended anywhere, anytime.
• To read and accept the school’s Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy. • To not use the tablet to download multimedia files, unless approved by the school. • To not use the iPad to participate in any activities which may be considered obscene, profane, explicit, discriminatory, defamatory, harassing, malicious or dangerous. • To use the tablet for school/educational activities only. • To immediately report any damage to the hardware or disruption on the software. • To make the tablet available for regular random checks to monitor the usage and compliance with approved standards. • To ensure the tablet is brought to school everyday, with the battery fully charged. • To be responsible for all data and regularly back up important files. • To return the tablet in the same condition it was received.

8. Responsibilities Responsibilities of the Parents • To take financial responsibility for any damage derived from accidents/misuse of the tablet; accepting the costing provided by the school, in the understanding that the school will seek to repair the tablet in the most cost effective and timely manner. • To take financial responsibility for the loss/theft of the tablet, reimbursing the school for the residual value of the tablet as stipulated in the school’s asset value measuring system. This system calculates a daily value of the tablet by assigning an effective life of 3 years. • Parents understand that failure to return the tablet upon leaving the school will result in the residual value of the tablet being reflected in pending fees and deposit refunds. • Parents have the option to reimburse the school for the residual value of the tablet, if the repair cost of a damaged tablet exceeds the residual value. • To read and accept the school’s Information and Communication Technologies Acceptable Use Policy. • Monitor the use of the tablet outside school to, not only ensure its safety and care, but also that it is being used for educational/research purposes only, within stated school policy.
9. Information and Communication Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Technology at The British School of Tashkent (BST) supports and enhances the work of departments, students, and staff in furthering the mission of the school. Every student, department, and staff member will have full access to the technology essential to fulfilling learning objectives, assignments and job responsibilities. Access to technology at BST is a privilege and not a right and is governed by the School’s Acceptable Use Policy. Any violation or suspected violation of the School’s AUP will result in disciplinary action, including the removal of technology use privileges. All members of BST’s Community are required to follow the Acceptable Use Policy when using information and communication technologies to ensure the appropriate use, security and accessibility of the computing environment and equipment essential to the work of our learning community. User behaviour and acceptable usage The behaviour of each individual using BST’s Network must be appropriate at all times, and must not be in breach of the network policy of the school, which is outlined in this document. Each individual using the school network agrees that they are solely responsible for their actions, or the actions of others, for all material accessed and all actions undertaken whilst under their account on the network.

It is the responsibility of the individual using the school network to use it acceptably and appropriately. The network is for the purpose of school related study/work and not for personal needs. No games are permitted to be stored on the school network, including personal directories. Games are not to be played without permission of a staff member. Network Access • All users of BST’s Network are responsible for all material accessed under their account. • Accessing or attempting to access another user’s account without permission is strictly prohibited. Users may not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, data or passwords belonging to other users on the network. • Creating or forwarding inappropriate (mean-spirited, racist, pornographic, false, etc.) material is strictly prohibited. • The internet connection is to be used for school research, assignments and other school related activities only. The internet is a very valuable research tool and all member are encouraged to use it, provided it is used appropriately. • Academic honesty is expected from all our students and plagiarism is not acceptable. • Unauthorized copying or distribution of software or multimedia is illegal and prohibited. The illegal downloading of copyrighted material, is illegal and unethical. • BST’s Network is not to be used to download unrelated school materials. This includes games, music, movies and all other unrelated school material unrelated to school use. • Uploading and downloading of non-approved software will not be permitted. • BST’s Network may not be used for accessing or transmitting offensive materials, hate mail, gambling, material advocating violence or discrimination, or for illegal activity, such as obtaining obscene or pornographic material. • The network may not be used for purposes of profit, for lobbying or advertising, or to disseminate information to the School community of a personal interest. Monitoring of Network Users • Students will beware that any usage, including distributing or receiving information, school related or personal, may be monitored for unusual activity, security and/or network management reasons. • Emails sent and received may be monitored and viewed by the IT administrators. • The use of student laptops and iPads to access the internet both at BST and at home will be subject to monitoring by a filter and other tracking software. • Use of any “hacking” software to compromise or monitor BST data is prohibited. • Users will be expected to reveal their administrator password to the network manager, if required. • Students will never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they only know through emails or the internet. They will not divulge any personal information such as address, name, phone number of themselves or other individuals in the school

Email Policy • Email is to be used for the purpose of electronic communication between two parties. It is not to be used for spam, annoying, harassing or abusive emails, this includes ‘chain’ or ‘forward (fwd)’ emails. Email is considered harassment if it offends the receiving party in any way. • Student access to chat, instant messaging and social platforms is not allowed, unless used for educational purposes and supervised by a member of staff. • The individual is responsible for all emails sent and received on their email account. Anything that is received that is inappropriate will be reported to the relevant authority • No individual shall store, send or knowingly receive any explicit material. Use of School Computers DO: • Report any connection problems to a member of staff. • Log-off from the system when you leave. • Report any inappropriate websites that might have been accessed by accident. DON’T: • • • • •
Install any programs onto the computer including browsers. Disconnect the school network line. Unplug any connections including keyboard/mouse. Download software, multi-media content or others for non-school related purposes. Play games and interact in chat rooms/social platforms unless in an activity conducted by a teacher. • Use the internet to access indecent, offensive or banned materials. Backup Responsibilities and Use of Network Drive It is the responsibility of each user to backup their own computer on a periodic basis. The school is not responsible for loss of important data or material as a result of the user not performing a backup. Users are not permitted, under any circumstances, to store games, music or other unrelated school materials on their personal school network space. Personal devices Students using their own technology in school, such as leaving a mobile phone turned on or using it in class, sending nuisance text messages, or the unauthorized taking of images with any cameras, still or moving is in direct breach of the school’s acceptable use policy

Security issues Thumb drives and other storage media are governed by this Acceptable Use Policy, in that they must not contain material deemed to be offensive, copyright and so on. These mobile devices will be subject to the same random screening as laptop computers. Should a computer be lost, stolen or misplaced it is the user’s responsibility to notify the School Administration immediately after the loss has been discovered and to provide comprehensive details of the occurrence. Tablets and E-readers All policies stated in the document, wherever relevant, apply equally to school tablets and E-readers. Content may not be uploaded to or removed from, any school Tablet or E-reader without the approval of the School Administration. This includes, but is not limited to, Apps and book files. Sanctions Misuse of school computer, network or internet access may result in disciplinary action, including written warnings, withdrawal of access privileges and, in extreme cases, suspension or expulsion. Students who use technology to bully other students will face serious disciplinary consequences. Parents will be informed of any misuse. The school also reserves the right to report any illegal activities to the appropriate authorities.
