British Trombone Society Day

Dear Trombonists,

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is delighted to welcome two of the most established, and one of the youngest, brass virtuosi working today - Christian Lindberg, David Childs and the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition, Peter Moore. This stellar line-up is completed by Christopher Mowat, and they will be running a workshop for trombone players of all ages, before participants gather for a pre-concert performance at the Wales Millennium Centre.

In the evening of Thursday 28 April 2011, Christian Lindberg - Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Jane Hodge International Chair of Trombone - will be performing with the RWCMD Chamber Orchestra in the Hoddinott Hall at Cardiff ’s Wales Millennium Centre. Mr Lindberg will appear as a soloist in his own composition Kundraan’s Karma, for solo trombone and orchestra. David Childs will then join Mr Lindberg and the Chamber Orchestra to perform Ollie and the Steamboat Jetty - the UK premiere of Mr Lindberg’s new concerto for euphonium and chamber orchestra. The second half of the concert will feature Mr Lindberg conducting Sibelius: Symphony No. 3.

When and where 2.30–4.30pm Thursday 28 April 2011 Weston Gallery, RWCMD How to get involved If you’re a trombone player at Grade 8 or above: Fill in a registration form (download from www.rwcmd.ac.uk) Return the form to the address shown with the entry price of £5 (please note that this price does not include a ticket for the Lindberg concert). The show All those involved will be expected to perform in a Pre-Concert Performance at 6.30pm the same day, at the Glanfa Stage, Wales Millennium Centre. Admission is free to audiences for this event, and transport for participants will be provided free of charge from RWCMD to the Wales Millennium Centre.

At 1pm, whilst Mr Lindberg rehearses the chamber orchestra, Peter Moore will perform a recital for trombone and piano in the RWCMD Weston Gallery. Trombonists are then invited to join Mr Moore, Christopher Mowat and RWCMD students to form a trombone choir (2.30-4.30pm), which will perform in the foyer of the Hoddinott Hall at 6.30pm, before the Christian Lindberg concert. We hope that you will be able to join us in what promises to be an unforgettable day of trombone playing and music making. I was halfway through writing this review when I heard the deeply saddening news of James Watson’s untimely death. Jim was one of the most influential musicians and teachers in the brass world, and this CD is a testament to his transformation of the brass department at the Royal Academy of Music. His honest, ‘no fuss’ approach to brass playing will, I am sure, remain invaluable to a wealth of musicians. He will be sorely missed.
