Hello! my name is Britney Yan and I’m currently in my 3rd year of the B.Architecture program at the Azrieli School of Architecture in Ottawa, ON. I take each project as an opportunity to explore new ideas and to have fun. The contents in my portfolio will communicate my passion for experimenting with spaces and structure in a way that resonates with the senses.

1. COMMUNITY FOREST

A cultural + community centre located by Pimisi train station on Lebreton Flats in Ottawa, Ontario. APPROACH I was inspired by forests: places of wander and wonder. Upon arrival to the site, the trees outside guide visitors inside, wherein the continuum of natural trees, tree-like columns, and greenery inside blend the two environments into one flowing experience. Ground level is where the public programs exist as pods, nestled throughout the forest. The prvate programs, such as laboratories, classrooms, workshops, offices, and a gallery space are located above the trees (canopy level). The idea is that a forest is not limited to a specific community, but open for anyone to occupy or wander through, either with a purpose or without.

2. PLAY PAVILION

A seasonal pavilion situated along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, ON. APPROACH Tasked with designing a seasonal pavilion that would shelter both winter and summer activities along the Rideau canal (a skateway as well as a waterway), I rethink the notion of a shelter and strive for something playful. The site is reconciled by using the different levels created by the locks. The lock now directs visitors above the pavilion whereas at water level visitors are directed inside the pavilion. Either above or below, visitors experience the same three hearths that protrude from ground level. Notice the Play Pavilion contains no real enclosure, only orthogonal planes that fend off wind. Thus, warmth is produced through a sense of community and togetherness.

3. THE SOUND FACTORY

A Civic Music Center located on vibrant Bank St. in Ottawa, ON. APPROACH The idea of a factory was intriguing to me: From afar, programs and functions are separated into individual buildings with connections present as tubes or bridges. However, once inside a building, the openness produces a cacophony of sounds. Using these ideas, I separate the Black Box from the music school, creating an alley at ground level, and bridges above. I then group all of the practice pods and place them adjacent to the terrace, creating an opportunity to not only act as separate rooms, but also together to house performances.

4. MAKERSPACE

A Makerspace in Griffintown area of Montreal, QC APPROACH Inspired by the informality of the city and the way people took over the alleys with graffiti, I began this project by thinking about a building as a city. I then created two groups of spaces: Programmed spaces, and unprogrammed spaces. The unprogrammed spaces, similar to alley spaces, would exist horizontally, instead of vertically, as a half-floor between the programmed floors. In order to travel from programmed to programmed, one must pass through the “alley. The alleys spaces, similar to alleys, are not heated, nor powered, and provide space for collaboration, studio, &/or meetings. The idea is that informality induces creativity.

5. THE NEXUS

A folly located at Greenboro train station in Ottawa, ON. APPROACH The train tracks at Greenboro mark an invisible border between the built world and the natural world, where the people who wait for the train can enter the nexus and become apart of brief dance with the other side. Without the nexus, visitors who stand alone at the platform, like watching TV, can only watch the dance of nature before them. That is why the Nexus is beautiful: you can be apart of that dance with the birds, squirrels, and people around you. Only for a brevity of time.

Sliding umbrellas as the new bus shelter. Often times when I stand at the station platform, the shelters are the last place I want to be. With this new type of shelter, you can choose your proximity with others. You can stand alone, or huddle with someone. I think options are important for people to feel comfortable in a public environment.

This view shows the suspended water bowls and umbrella shelter. The folly exists in an act of balance with the supports rooted above the border (train tracks). It is a delicate structure celebrating the meeting of two worlds.
