BRITNEY YAN 2018-2019 B. ARCH 2nd YEAR PORTFOLIO
Hello! my name is Britney and I’m currently in my 2nd year of the B.Architecture program at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON. The contents in my portfolio will communicate my passion for a playful architecture that can connect with its occupants. Each of my projects precede itself with a vigorous process as I begin through divergent thinking, sketching, documentation, and model-making.

1 PLAY PAVILION
A SEASONAL PAVILION SITUATED ALONG THE RIDEAU CANAL, OTTAWA, ON. Drawings: Graphite, Markers, Pencil Crayon Model: Balsa Wood, Rice Paper, String
Tasked with designing a seasonal pavilion that would shelter both winter and summer activities along the Rideau canal (a skateway as well as a waterway), I rethink the notion of a shelter and strive for something playful. I reconcile the site by using the different levels created by the locks to my advantage. The lock now directs people to the top of the pavilion where visitors can gather around the three hearths that protrude from ground level. Notice the Play Pavilion contains no real enclosure, only orthogonal planes that fend off wind. Thus, warmth is produced through a sense of community and togetherness.

2 THE SOUND FACTORY
A CIVIC MUSIC CENTER LOCATED AT 413 BANK ST. OTTAWA, ON Drawings: Graphite, Ink, Pencil Crayon Model: Cardstock
The project aim was to design a civic music center for Ottawa in contribution to the Ottawa Music Strategy. The idea of a factory was intriguing to me: From afar, programs and functions are separated into individual buildings with connections present as tubes or bridges. However, once inside a building, the openness produces a cacophany of sounds. Using these ideas, I separate the Black Box from the music school, creating an alley at ground level, and bridges above. I then group all of the practice pods and place them adjacent to the terrace, creating an opportunity to house performaces.

3 MAKERSPACE
A MAKERSPACE & COMMUNITY CENTER IN GRIFFINTOWN AREA OF MONTREAL, QC Drawings: Graphite, Ink, Pencil Crayon Model: Plexiglass
Inspired by the way people took over the alleys of Montreal with graffiti, I begun this project by thinking about a building as a city. Something with in-between spaces that emulated that of an alley, and could grow over time according to the needs of its occupants. I then created two groups of spaces: Programmed spaces, and unprogrammed spaces. The unprogrammed spaces, similar to alley spaces, would be sandwiched between the programmed spaces. In order to travel from programmed to programmed, one must pass through the “alley. This may lead to encounters, conversation, and maybe collaboration. The idea is that freedom induces creativity.

4 THE NEXUS
A FOLLY LOCATED AT GREENBORO TRAIN STATION IN OTTAWA, ON. Made with Rhino, V-Ray, Photoshop, Illustrator Model: Watercolor paper, reclaimed wood
(The train tracks at Greenboro mark an invisible border between the built world and the natural world.) The humans who wait for their train can enter the nexus and become apart of the live broadcast with the other side. When their train comes, they leave the nexus. It is a brief dance before the two worlds. Without the nexus, the air is stale and divided. When standing at the platform, it is just like watching TV. You are a lone soul watching something dance before you on the screen. That is why the nexus is beautiful. You can be a part of that dance. Dance with the birds, the squirrels, the other humans. Only for a brevity of time.

Sliding umbrellas as the new bus shelter! Often times when I stand at the station platform, the bus shelters are the last place I want to be. They are cramped spaces only suitable for two. With the sliding umbrellas, you can choose your proximity with others. You can stand alone, or huddle with someone. I think options are important for people.

This view shows the suspended water bowls and umbrella shelter. The folly exists in an act of balance with the supports rooted above the border (train tracks). It is a delicate structure celebrating the meeting of two worlds.
