LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the biggest-ever edition of Scenezine, weighing in at 88 pages. There’s been so much going on at Britomart over the last few months that it was still a challenge to fit everything in. First off, a big warm welcome to the more than 2000 workers who have either just moved into one of our new buildings or are in the process of moving in. We look forward to having you in the neighbourhood and to sharing the things we love about Britomart. These staff from Ernst & Young, Westpac New Zealand, Southern Cross Health Society and Les Mills will add significantly not just to the numbers of our community but also to its vibrancy and energy. Read more about them on page 68. In recent weeks we’ve also welcomed The Britomart Country Club, Tyler Street Garage, Ebisu and Precinct Cafe to the Britomart hospitality scene. We’re truly spoilt for choice in the precinct when it comes to outstanding food, coffee and entertainment options.

Elsewhere we also welcome Generator, the very cool new private members’ club and business facility in Stanbeth House. This is a really exciting time for the Britomart team as the buzz about the precinct spreads to a wider Auckland community. It’s very satisfying seeing a lot of hard work paying off, as people finally get what we’ve been talking about all this time!
You’ll read all about it in our next issue of Scenezine later in the year. In the meantime, stay tuned to www.britomart.org for all the Britomart news in real time.

DEDICATION: This portrait series is dedicated to the late Angelo Morini, who was the inspiration for it. THE GOOD FOLK OF THE MARKET OUR PORTRAIT SERIES BY BLACKBOX PHOTOGRAPHY CAPTURES SOME VERY SPECIAL PEOPLE ON ONE ORDINARY DAY: SATURDAY AT THE CITY FARMERS’ MARKET. It was on a routine weekend visit to Britomart’s City Farmers’ Market that photographer’s scout Pam Goode first spotted pasta maker Angelo Morini enthusiastically showcasing his wares. Pam instinctively knew he would make a marvellous portrait subject, and the idea for a market stallholder photo essay was born. On a December Saturday, Pam and photographer partner Chris Williams set up a pop-up studio in the nearby car park and proceeded to photograph 11 of the market regulars in all their passionate, produce-obsessed glory. The market has been part of the fabric of the Britomart precinct for four years now, and Pam, herself a regular, has been struck by how much a part of weekly life it has become for those in the inner-city area. “Many people come to the market every weekend to stock up on their fresh food for the week,” says Pam. “What also strikes me is how the produce varies intensely week to week according to what’s best at that very moment. So much of the food we shot the market people with was picked or prepared that morning.” City Farmers’ Market was founded in November 2006 by friends Clare Buchanan and Missy Bayer, two Kiwis who met while they were living in Amsterdam. “We both love cooking, and when we came back to New Zealand we missed the great food markets that were part of our life in Europe,” says Clare. “At the time there was a food market revolution happening in the US and the UK, so we were inspired to start our own here.” For Clare, Britomart was a natural choice of location. She and husband Heath Lowe had been among the very first tenants in the emerging Britomart precinct, running their design studio Buchanan, Lowe and vintage furniture store Markt from the Buckland Building. They loved the old buildings and knew what an exciting neighbourhood Britomart was.
“It’s also a gathering point for many areas,” says Clare. “The market helps provide the central city with a sense of community that it doesn’t have otherwise.” Today the market still has 11 of the original stallholders, plus seasonal stalls that come and go. In winter the weekly number of stalls is around 20, increasing in summer to around 30. “There’s great quality in the produce and a real dedication among the producers,” says Clare. “A farmer’s market is a great way to shop. You get to shop at your own pace in a pleasant atmosphere and to meet the people that grew or made the food. Reducing food miles and supporting the local economy are just happy side benefits.”

Cook peas in salted water and refresh in iced water; drain well. Blitz in a blender and put in a bowl. Add crushed feta and mix. Lay cling film on a bench and overlap salmon slices along it to a length of about 30cm. Spoon pea and feta mix along the bottom half of the salmon, then carefully roll up and secure ends. Refrigerate for an hour. Salt grated potato and leave to stand for 5 mins. Melt duck fat and mix with potatoes. Place into a small tray and bake covered with foil till tender. Refrigerate till firm, then cut into rounds with a metal cutter. Cut salmon into lengths and allow to come to room temperature. Warm potato rounds in the oven and poach eggs. Place potato round in centre of plate with salmon arranged on top, then top with poached egg and watercress. Drizzle with lemon oil and cracked pepper and serve with a lemon wedge. Best leave it to the experts? It’s on the menu now at Quay Street Cafe – in the Maritime Building.

CRACK OPEN THE CHAMPAGNE – IT’S NOT EVERY DAY WE GET THREE NEW BUILDINGS AT BRITOMART!
Athletica, an international yoga-inspired apparel brand coming for the first time to New Zealand.
As we go to press, the final finishing touches are being put on our two new office buildings, the Ernst & Young Building and the second element of Westpac on Takutai Square.
Upmarket food-to-go outlets will include Smart Sushi, flatbread and salad bar Pita Pit, French cafe L’Assiette and a new branch of acclaimed espresso bar Espresso Workshop. The Atrium will also have a Westpac branch bank.
The office fitouts of the upper floors are almost complete and staff have already begun moving into their new workplaces. By the middle of April a total of 2100 staff from Ernst & Young, Westpac and Southern Cross Health Society will have taken up residence across both buildings. Over the next couple of months you’ll also see the ground floor retail businesses of both buildings begin to open their doors. Most will front Atrium on Takutai, the nine-storey-tall glasscovered gallery running between the two buildings. They will include several high-end fashion and beauty stores, as well as an excellent new range of daytime eating options.
ATRIUM SHOPS AND EATERIES Shops we can confirm for Atrium on Takutai include fragrance and beauty stores Jo Malone and L’Occitane, London designer label store Ted Baker, two new Nike stores and Lululemon
Also notable in the Atrium are two ‘green walls’, large-scale vertical plantings that live on harvested rainwater and provide many environmental benefits to the complex. Both the Ernst & Young Building and the newest Westpac on Takutai Square building hold ‘5 Green Star - Office Design’ ratings from the New Zealand Green Building Council. This rating signifies ‘New Zealand excellence’ in green building standards.
VALET, PUBLIC AND TENANT PARKING The third newly-completed building in the precinct is the Britomart Car Park Building on the corner of Quay Street and Britomart Place. Britomart Car Park is expected to be open for both tenant and public parking by the end of March. By this date Britomart Valet, previously located in the centre of the precinct, will have moved its services to the new building.
R
As well as servicing tenants and their visitors, Britomart Valet offers a public personal parking service. Read more about the valet service – and a full range of other services offered from Britomart Car Park – on page 43.
Young Building, including the lawn) is due to be completed by the end of April. The remainder is scheduled to be finished in midJuly, in time for the building’s official opening ceremony.
The Britomart Car Park Building will also be home to Auckland’s hottest new fitness club, Les Mills Britomart, due to open midApril. A Giant bike store and workshop will be located on the Quay Street side of the building and is due to open mid-May.
Once the streetscaping is completed, the contractors will all clear out and Britomart will lose that ‘building site’ feeling. Come that big sporting event later in the year (which we dare not name in case of trademark infringements) Britomart will be looking its beautiful best!
BARS, RESTAURANTS AND MORE BARS
STANBETH-EXCELSIOR UPDATE
The last couple of months have been a busy time on the entertainment front too. New bars The Britomart Country Club and Tyler Street Garage have been open for several weeks now, both proving instantly popular with Britomart neighbours and a great many other Aucklanders.
On 9 March the Stanbeth-Excelsior heritage development was officially opened by His Worship the Mayor of Auckland Len Brown. The refurbishment of Stanbeth House and Excelsior House was completed last year, bringing the number of fully restored historic buildings in the precinct to nine.
By the time you read this, Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar Ebisu will also have opened in the Union Fish Company Building, next door to Tyler Street Garage. Ebisu offers a funky modern take on Japanese dining, dishing up classic Japanese and Pacific Rim food, regular live DJ entertainment and cocktails from lunchtime till late.
The hospitality businesses on the ground floor of the buildings – 1885 Britomart, Shaky Isles Coffee Co. and Cafe Hanoi – have already become precinct institutions and are well known to many of you.
Also in Union Fish and opening onto Tyler Street is tiny New York-style cafe Precinct, serving excellent coffee, bagels and sandwiches to go. Go and check them out if you haven’t already!
THE GRASS WILL GROW AGAIN Don’t worry, that sea of dirt where Takutai Lawn used to be will be lush and green again in no time. The lawn is just being replanted as part of the Takutai Square streetscaping project currently underway. This project will see all the Takutai Square paving (the area bounded by Tyler, Gore and Galway Streets) remodelled with bluestone and more planting added around the perimeter. The northern part of the square (the area in front of the Ernst &
The upper levels of both buildings are also now fully occupied by businesses. These include advertising and design agency Shine, illustrators LY Design, Plantation and Watermark Ltd and travel industry online product and service developer Online Republic. Extending across both buildings at Level 1 is Generator, a private members’ club with social and business facilities for hire on a casual, monthly or annual basis. Anyone can become a member, so if you need extra space for meetings, hot desking or client entertaining, get along and talk to the guys at Generator.
Keep up with all the news and developments as they happen at www.britomart.org. Go to the ‘What’s On’ page and click the orange RSS feeds button – you’ll get updates straight to your inbox.

FLIGHTS OF FANCY AWARD-WINNING ARTIST SARA HUGHES TAKES OVER BRITOMART PROJECT SPACE AND EXPLORES THE POLITICS OF A PYJAMA PATTERN IN THE PROCESS.
She became interested in paisley as a symbol of commerce after visiting an area in Dunedin called ‘Little Paisley’, named by settlers from Paisley, Scotland.
Sara Hughes likes nothing better than to experiment with patterns and space, so she was happy to be let loose in Britomart’s new Customs Street East mini-gallery.
“I’m really fascinated by the way paisley was used for trade between India and England in the 18th century. We just think of it as a nice pattern on scarves and pyjamas but there’s a lot more to it than that.”
The Auckland-based painter created the inaugural exhibition for Britomart Project Space, located in the 19th-century window facade of Stanbeth House. The space showcases the work of emerging and established New Zealand artists in a series of regularly changing exhibitions. From the bus stop on the opposite side of the road, the swooping shapes of Sara’s work could be a swarm of panicked butterflies or startled acid-hued birds. Viewed up close through the window arches, however, the detail is of intricate, swirling paisley patterns. In a tribute to Britomart’s trading history, Sara explains that the aluminium and vinyl piece is a continuation of her ‘Love Me Tender’ series, which she first explored on a Frances Hodgkins Fellowship at Otago University in 2003.
Sara has held exhibitions everywhere from New York to Berlin but says the tall window gallery with its three frames and multitude of viewing options was unique. “I had to stand out in the middle of the road to view it properly and check how the pieces were working together. I wanted to create something that would burst out into the street!”

Nothing says summer quite like Isaac’s Cider, New Zealand’s favourite cider. It’s made with New Zealand-grown apples sourced from the finest orchards and is as naturally uplifting as a clear summer’s day. Refreshing, crisp, with champagne-like characteristics, Isaac’s Cider is a perfect drop, made just the way nature intended. In late 2010 Isaac’s launched the new Isaac’s Pear Cider, the latest refreshing change from Mac’s. Made from locally-grown apples with a refreshing hit of New Zealand pear, it’s lighter and drier but equally delicious. A real drop of pear-fection! Both Isaac’s Apple and Pear Ciders are available at Northern Steamship Co. and other fine bars at Britomart.

VALET CONCIERGES FARLEY, kARL, MELANIE, C.K., MICHAEL & J.C. BIGGER, BETTER BRITOMART VALET BRITOMART’S VERY OWN PUBLIC VALET PARKING SERVICE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS – AND IT’S AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE. From their posh new premises at Britomart Car Park, the Britomart Valet team will soon be running the largest public valet service in New Zealand. As well as parking the visitors and staff of businesses in the precinct, Britomart Valet offers a full personal parking service to all customers after 10am daily. Valet parking costs just $10 on top of normal parking rates, and, brilliantly, eliminates the hassle of finding a parking space. Better still, it saves you trekking back through the building laden with shopping, trying to remember where you parked.
THE VIP TREATMENT To try the full VIP parking experience, drive into the dedicated valet parking entrance on Britomart Place. You’ll find yourself in the valet area, where you’ll be greeted by a valet concierge. Just give them your keys, take your ticket and off you go. When you’re ready to pick up your car, you can text ahead or request your car in person at Britomart Car Park Reception (corner Britomart Place and Scene Lane). Your car will be fetched while you wait in the comfortable lobby area.
TREAT ME LIKE A LADY While valet parking is widely used overseas in shopping malls and restaurants, it remains something of a novelty for Aucklanders. We tend to associate a valet service with big hotels – or else confuse it with car grooming. Britomart Valet is out to change all that. “It’s just getting people used to the idea,” says Melanie Miller, one of the Britomart Valet concierge team. “An extra ten dollars is completely worth it for the time and hassle you save. I might
not do it every day, but when I’m out for a day’s shopping or a night out with friends, parking is the last thing I want to spend time on. “It’s also a great thing to do on a date or a special night out – you cut out all that parking business which is a bit of a romance killer! As a guy, it makes you look good and makes her feel like a million dollars.”
SERVICES WITH A SMILE
43
It’s Melanie’s friendly face you’ll find most days at Britomart Car Park Reception. The Britomart Valet team provide a wide range of concierge services, from local information and advice to sorting your dry cleaning. As well as full on-site car grooming services, they offer scooter hire and newspapers and flowers for sale. They’ll lend you a baby buggy or an umbrella – even a breathalyser if you think you need it! You name it and they’ll do their best to help. You’ll find Melanie and the team in the Reception lobby – staffed 24 hours a day – on the corner of Britomart Place and Scene Lane.
PUBLIC PARKING The Britomart Car Park is also now open for normal public parking. Our proud parking guys tell us theirs is the nicest car park in New Zealand! It has good lighting, attractive graphics, decent-sized parking spaces, great security and helpful people on Reception at all times. If you’re parking yourself, you need to drive in via the Quay Street entrance. Take a ticket at the barrier and drive to Level 2 or above. You’ll need to take your ticket with you and pay at an auto-pay station before returning to your car. Go to www.britomart.org/parking-britomart for more information.

In 1997 a controversial proposal to part-demolish a number of heritage buildings and build 11 vast new towers at Britomart was eventually abandoned. Finally, after extensive public consultation and an international design competition, a new proposal came together. It would allow the development of a lively and diverse community at Britomart and still remain sympathetic to the area’s special heritage. The master plan included an underground rail station and transport interchange centred around the historic CPO Building. The heritage buildings would be refurbished, several new buildings developed and a network of public spaces created.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION The contract for the Britomart development went up for tender in 2002. After stiff international competition, the right to buy the development was won by private development consortium Bluewater Group. Bluewater Group entered into a contract with Auckland City Council for the long-term ownership and development of the
52 Britomart precinct. It included 150-year leases on the historic buildings and renewable 50-year leases on the new buildings. In 2006 Bluewater Management Company, part of the Bluewater Group, bought out its consortium partners to become sole owner of the precinct. In 2008 it changed its name to Cooper and Company, after its New Zealand founder Peter Cooper.
RESCUE AND RESTORATION Today the revitalisation of Britomart is well underway. Nine of the precinct’s 18 heritage buildings, many of which were almost derelict, have now been fully refurbished. The remainder have been cleaned up and leased to fashion, design and other businesses on an interim basis. Three new buildings, the Ernst & Young, Westpac and Britomart Car Park Buildings, will be completed in April 2011 and their commercial and ground-floor retail tenants are now moving in. Committed to maintaining a dynamic mix of businesses and a thriving, lively community at Britomart, Cooper and Company remains the long-term custodian of the precinct and its legacy.

Enough water in the tank for a minimum of two showers a day.
There’s never been a dull moment and I don’t see any coming.
THREE THINGS YOU LOVE ABOUT BRITOMART?
Watching the transformation of the precinct over the years into something better than we imagined. Every day bumping into people I’ve come to know and like over the last six years. The sense that this is where I belong.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR TONIGHT?
It’s a Gourmet Girls’ Night – I meet with a group of girlfriends every month and we cook then devour amazing food. It’s accompanied by great wine and a fair few laughs.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FUTURE?
Nothing, it would be all too easy if we knew the answers and the journey would be way too sensible.

ONE OF THE COOLEST PEOPLE I KNOW IS: Too many to narrow down to just one person, they’re all cool for different reasons.
THE BOLDEST MOVE I EVER MADE: Shaving my head when I had a public-facing job for a very serious company. I think it was my way of saying I was bored and over it!
WHAT DOES THE WORD SOUL BRING TO MIND? Honesty in all shapes and forms.
TOP FIVE: THINGS I REMIND MYSELF OFTEN What goes around comes around. There is always time. Those that matter don’t mind; those that mind don’t matter. Friends are more important than money. Laughter is the best medicine.
THIS IS A PAGE ABOUT ART. AND THIS IS THE TITLE OF THAT PAGE ABOUT ART. ART AT BRITOMART. YOU CAN READ IT AND LEARN MORE. LEARN MORE ABOUT ART, LIFE AND THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE. BY LOOKING AT WORKS OF ART WE SEE OURSELVES REFLECTED IN THE ART. MUCH LIKE A MIRROR. BUT FLASHER. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT IT TAKES AN OPENED AND TRAINED EYE TO RECOGNISE ART, AND WHAT CONSTITUTES GOOD ART. HERE AT BRITOMART WE MAKE THAT EASY FOR YOU. WE ONLY HAVE GOOD ART.ENJOY.
THE LOST ART OF PLAY STUMBLE ON ANY STRANGE HAPPENINGS IN BRITOMART RECENTLY? YOU MAY HAVE FOUND THE LOST PLAY GROUNDS. It was a fortuitous door-knock that ultimately led to a month-long exhibition of art and performance at Britomart in February. Elam graduate Kate Muggeridge was searching for a suitable site for her street exhibition Lost Play Grounds when she came across the perfect location. “I wanted to do some outside art downtown and I just happened to knock on a door and discovered it was part of Britomart. I had no idea it was such a great space.” The walls and foyers of the precinct’s restored historic buildings proved to be an ideal canvas for Lost Play Grounds’ intriguing collection of artworks, installations and performance art pieces, which explore the city as a space for escape and play.
on footpaths, while performers from the New Zealand Parkour Association explored alternative pathways through the cityscape using ledges, bollards, benches and other features of the built environment. Kate says the Britomart team helped her negotiate some of the more problematic aspects of exhibiting outside. “It’s not normally done because things like construction sites, permit restrictions and the general public can make it tricky. However the idea was to create interesting work to get people’s attention and take them by surprise.” Visitors could follow a map of works around the precinct or just happen upon them. Kate says audience reaction to the works was fascinating. “It amazed me how some people walked past not even realising – they were just so engrossed in everyday life!”
Among the works tucked away in alleys and alcoves were a series of wall posters inspired by Leafa Wilson’s memories of childhood games (above) and a wall text piece by The Pleasure Corporation.
Kate believes the cure for that is to make art even more accessible to a wider audience. “Artists need a platform and the city is a great platform!”

The Manganiyar Seduction SPOTLIGHT ON... AUCKLAND ARTS FESTIVAL THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE QUAY BUILDING IS HOME TO THE ORGANISERS OF AUCKLAND’S BIGGEST ARTS EVENT, THE BIENNIAL AUCKLAND ARTS FESTIVAL. WE VISITED THE TEAM JUST AS THEY PREPARED FOR LIFT-OFF. It’s the lead-up to the 2011 Auckland Arts Festival and in a character-filled office in the Quay Building is an unexpected hive of activity. The Auckland Arts Festival team is getting ready to deliver the region’s biggest arts event: more than 100 events involving 500 artists over a 19-day period. “From a core staff of six people, who work fulltime through the off-year, the Festival team grows to 60 as we approach D-Day,” explains Artistic Director David Malacari.
Shows were presented at almost every venue in the central city, as well as major events on the North Shore, in West Auckland, Mangere and Papakura.
FOUNDATION TENANTS Malacari moved the Auckland Arts Festival offices to Britomart in December 2004, a year after the inaugural Festival. They were one of the fledgling precinct’s five original tenants. “We’ve always enjoyed being part of the Britomart precinct,” Malacari says. “Throughout our six years here, we’ve made use of many different Britomart spaces for Festival events. It’s been very satisfying to see the area develop and grow.”
“Putting on an event of this scale requires commitment, experience and skill. We have a top-notch team of people who are incredibly good at what they do. Many work at Festivals all over the world, coming back to Auckland to put on a dazzling event.”
The Festival’s original Britomart home was the Northern Steamship Company Building. After the 2005 Festival, a new space further along Quay Street was established – a small colony of pigeons first being evicted to make room. These Quay Building premises, today shared with Silo Theatre, were to become the permanent Festival offices.
At the time we went to print, around 100,000 people were expected to attend the Festival’s mix of ticketed and free events, which showcase the work of international and local artists across theatre, music, dance and the visual arts.
From these bohemian beginnings, the biennial Festival has grown into one of the most important events in Auckland’s cultural calendar. And if you were unfortunate enough to miss it this year? There’s always 2013 to look forward to!

COMING EVENTS
SATURDAY 9-THURSDAY 14 APRIL 2011
FRIDAY 20 MAY 2011
For six days in April, sound installation ‘National Grid’ will be performed in the central spaces of the Britomart precinct. The installation, by London-based sound art project Disinformation, will take a live feed from local power sources to amplify electrical activity from the surrounding precinct.
May is Appeal Month for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and on 20 May the Westpac Rescue Helicopter will be landing in Takutai Square. It’s a great chance to meet the crew and get a first-hand look at the chopper in action.
‘NATIONAL GRID’ SOUND ART EVENT
Since 1995 Disinformation has pioneered the manipulation of electromagnetic noise, from sources such as live mains electricity, lightning, railway and IT equipment, creating hypnotic ‘drone music’. Part of Disinformation’s ongoing ‘National Grid’ project, the Britomart event promises to ‘plug you into the network to savour the deep, pulsing sounds and surprising dynamics of Auckland’s power supply’. It will be performed from 8am to 8pm every day in the open space between Gore and Commerce Streets. ‘National Grid’ is part of Auckland Council’s 10-day public art event Living Room, this year entitled ‘Metropolis Dreaming’ and involving multiple art events throughout the city.
WESTPAC RESCUE CHOPPER APPEAL
The crew will be manning the sausage sizzle and Westpac staff will be shaking collection buckets, so get down there and dig deep for a good cause! Every year rescue choppers undertake around 5000 search and rescue and air ambulance missions. Each mission costs thousands of dollars, for emergencies ranging from boating and car accidents and near drownings to heart attacks and emergency births. Britomart business Westpac is the major sponsor of the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch Westpac Rescue Helicopters, as well as the Waikato Air Ambulance. All funds raised throughout the appeal go to the local rescue helicopter trust.
Keep an eye out at www.britomart.org for details on these and other Britomart events.

A Fifty Cent Mixture production, the event featured a collaborative work by artists City, BMD, OneKame, Smud and Cinzah Seekayem. The roughly two-metre square canvas took just three hours to create and is to be auctioned off for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
