LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Our biggest news this issue is the opening of The Pavilions at Britomart, the beautiful new shopping and dining complex in the centre of the precinct. We’re delighted to be welcoming Bobbi Brown, Juliette Hogan, Karen Walker, Kathryn Wilson, Lineage, Taylor Boutique, Trelise Cooper and Trelise Cooper Boardroom to The Pavilions. Just as exciting is the arrival of three new eateries in The Pavilions – bistro Ortolana, dessert restaurant Milse and gelateria and artisan bakery The Store. And just opened on Tyler Street: Japanese shochu and snack bar Fukuko and homewares store Seletti. Other new arrivals since our last issue of Scenezine are Xuxu, which opened in the Levy Building in August, White’s & Co. in the Atrium and OFF Wax & Brow Bar on Galway Street. Welcome to all of you! All this excitement is just in time for Christmas and what is shaping up to be an amazing summer at Britomart. The precinct is already feeling very festive, with Christmas lights and music, the party season in full swing and a great market day planned for Saturday 15 December (see page 60). We’ve got top DJs rocking Takutai Square Thursday to Sunday all summer. And in early March we have Britomart Fashion Sessions, a series of catwalk fashion shows taking place at Atrium on Takutai (see page 61). We hope you’ll find plenty of other reasons to come and eat, drink, shop and hang out here in this issue. We look forward to seeing you in the precinct soon – roll on summer at Britomart!

SOUNDS OF THE SUMMER AS THE WEATHER MELLOWS OUT, SO WILL THE ATMOSPHERE IN TAKUTAI SQUARE, WITH DJS PLAYING LIVE THURSDAY TO SUNDAY ALL SUMMER LONG. TUNE YOUR EARS TO BRITOMART FM. Nothing quite gets you into the cruisy summer vibe like live music in the open air, and this summer there’s Britomart FM to lubricate the social atmosphere downtown. From now until the end of March 2013, an entertaining lineup of top local DJs will be spinning tunes in Takutai Square from 12pm to 3pm every Thursday to Sunday. Listeners lounging in the bean bags on the lawn or nursing a drink at the outdoor cafe and bar tables will soak up sounds from DJs familiar to

frequenters of Britomart bars. Those outside the precinct can tune in and listen via the live stream player on the home page at www.britomart.org. An extensive Britomart FM playlist will also stream round the clock outside the live DJ hours. It’s the result of a creative collaboration between Britomart and local DJ, crooner and all-round music legend Peter Urlich. Britomart FM promises the kind of diverse musical lineup that his radio show audiences have long known and loved. “The playlist will be very eclectic, ranging across pop, soul, jazz and rock and featuring songs that are nonmainstream, genre-bending and taken from many eras,” says Peter.

&NEWSWORTHY

“Basically if I consider it’s a good song and it suits the format then you will hear it, be it Sinatra, Specials or Shapeshifter. The DJs we invite to play all have similar wide tastes. I think there’s a big hole in the ‘radio’ market – somewhere between bFM, George and National. Hope I haven’t scared anybody.” Britomart’s the only place in town you can eat, drink, shop and socialise while staying immersed in that music-soaked lazy-afternoon atmosphere. Just bring on the sunshine! Britomart FM has been made possible through the kind support of Orcon, Pulse Digital, Mazda and Moa Brewing Co. – thanks, guys! the pavilions

INTO THE ZONE Britomart is fast becoming a one-stop shopping mecca for Aucklanders. Divided into four distinct shopping ‘zones’, Britomart offers chic boutiques and destination shops that run the gamut from high fashion to street cool and everything in between. The Pavilions

Tyler Street

At the centre of the precinct is The Pavilions, Britomart’s newest fashion hub. Local designers Karen Walker, Trelise Cooper, Juliette Hogan and Vicki Taylor are all opening flagship stores here, alongside Lineage, a shoe and accessories boutique from Jennie Loo, the fashionista behind Ashley Ardrey. Also here are relocated boutiques for shoe designer Kathryn Wilson and executive label Trelise Cooper Boardroom, plus Australasia’s first standalone store for makeup brand Bobbi Brown. Across Te Ara Tāhuhu Walking Street, street cred comes in the form of iconic Japanese sneakers from Onitsuka Tiger, made cult classics by Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Adjacent are timeless outdoor brand Timberland and Apple retailer Yoobee, which schools you in all things Mac. And across the courtyard is lululemon athletica, offering some of the world’s best fitnesswear, including yoga pants renowned for their butt-perfecting qualities.

Walking down the Tyler Street laneway, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Melbourne or London – if it wasn’t for a trio of New Zealand’s finest fashion merchants. Kate Sylvester, Zambesi and WORLD all have flagship stores here, with WORLD Beauty stocking cult beauty brands such as Aesop, as well as Diptyque, the world’s most coveted candles. If you’re more hip than haute, check out The Concept Store, filled with every hue and pattern of Havaianas jandals. Sneakerheads can literally get their kicks – and streetwear – at Co-Lab, choosing from Nike SB, Nike 6.0, Hurley and Converse ranges. Just-opened Seletti Boutique carries the eponymous range of Italian homewares, as well as covetable clothing brands like Bassike and Current/Elliott. For outdoor lovers, Coast New Zealand is known for its chic-buthardy outdoor bean bags and Giant Auckland stocks New Zealand’s biggest range of Giant road and mountain bikes.

Generator, Excelsior House AS A BUSINESS COMMUNITY, BRITOMART PROVIDES A FERTILE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE CROSS-POLLINATION OF IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITY. DITA DE BONI INVESTIGATES. No man is an island, as the saying goes. And no business can operate without a network of customers, suppliers, stakeholders and innovators around it from which to draw inspiration and commercial success. If that network is right outside your front door – a network of creative, talented and entrepreneurial people who happen to be building the same experience for customers you are – so much the better. And that is exactly what is happening at Britomart, where over 100 businesses are not only inspiring their customers but also inspiring each other; the constant cross-pollination of ideas just one of the benefits of being located in this dynamic, evolving community. Like many businesses that now call Britomart home, SublimeNZ, one of the country’s top experiential marketing agencies, moved from Ponsonby at a time when the precinct’s heritage buildings were just beginning to be renovated. “We had to wear hard hats and hi-vis vests to check it out!” remembers Robert Bruce, SublimeNZ’s Managing Director. The company was the very first tenant at Generator, the

32

‘part business hub, part social club’ serviced office centre hosting a number of high-end business clients on a resident or casual basis. Since bedding in in late 2010, Robert says he has watched the whole precinct grow and evolve, and says he “just loves how vibrant the area has become”. The melding of business ideas and opportunities has been a big drawcard for SublimeNZ. “Within my first month at Generator, I met one of the team from advertising agency Shine, who became a great customer of ours!” he says. “We’ve worked with many other businesses around the precinct too. One of the great things about Generator and Britomart as a whole are the constant networking events which are great places to meet people and generate business – excuse the pun!” Interior design company Material Creative also moved to Britomart from Ponsonby. Co-founder Toni Brandso says that while the company has had formal collaborations with its neighbours – such as designing the interior of pop-up fashion gallery Curate – there are also plenty of informal opportunities to take advantage of. “In Ponsonby we were quite separate to the businesses around us, whereas here we are constantly meeting potential business collaborators in cafes and bars and so on and striking up conversation,” she says. “Just the other day I met a documentary filmmaker in a cafe, for example; in meeting him and talking to him about what he

of business does we made a business connection that might allow us to collaborate in future.”

WORLD menswear designer Benny Castles – who recently worked with local humanitarian initiative The Village Project on a fundraising project – says the label’s decision to move its flagship store to the precinct was “a natural decision”. The fashion house services customers looking for cutting-edge style as well as tailored corporate gear for those working at Britomart organisations such as Southern Cross Health Society and Westpac New Zealand. WORLD is situated near other high-end fashion houses such as Kate Sylvester and Zambesi in the Tyler Street area, and although you might assume they’d be competing, Benny says the iconic New Zealand brands are complementary. They work together on many formal and informal platforms, and with other local fashion and beauty businesses on events such as the upcoming Britomart Fashion Sessions. Like the Zambesi girls that pop down to Ebisu at cocktail hour and bring drinks back to the store, Benny says WORLD people also frequent the bars and restaurants in the area. The team has chosen to have its Christmas party at Tyler Street Garage this year; in fact, most Britomart businesses are keeping their 2012 Christmas festivities within the precinct. While there, some of them will no doubt be partaking of Moa Beer and Stolen Rum, brands that are both headquartered at Britomart. Stolen’s Roger Holmes says like many other precinct residents, he has worked on some formal collaborations and many more informal ones that have popped up in the course of everyday operations. “The great thing about operating at Britomart is that neighbours treat you like neighbours,” he says. The brand has created special cocktails for its Britomart clients, such as the Cherry Blossom cocktail served at local bars such as Xuxu. But it’s not just retail and hospitality offerings that report success in creative collaboration. Corporates that have chosen to move to Britomart for the beautiful surrounds and easy access to amenities and transport have found plenty of opportunities to leverage themselves. Chris Mirams of Westpac New Zealand says one example of that was when the bank covered Takutai Lawn with poppies to commemorate Anzac Day this year. “A Herald reporter seeing it on his way to work from the train ended up doing a story on it.”

Toni Brandso, Material Creative Chris says Westpac understood the original vision for the precinct: “mixing the heritage aspects of the area with new, premium offerings in retail and hospitality” to create something truly unique for customers. But the model has provided something uniquely inspiring to those doing business in the area too. Simon Cairns from creative agency Milk, who designed the bird-themed navigation concept at Britomart Car Park and commissioned stencil artist Flox to illustrate it, agrees. “It’s a real cultural hub supporting creative services and businesses, and rapidly becoming the heart of downtown Auckland, and all of us at this address benefit from that.”

HIP COMES TO BRITOMART AUCKLAND FOODIE LEGENDS JACKIE GRANT AND SCOTT BROWN ARE ABOUT TO TAKE THE BRITOMART RESTAURANT SCENE BY STORM. CATHERINE BELL WENT TO TALK TO THEM.

MORE 35

It’s five years since Jackie Grant and Scott Brown of The Hip Group first discussed a restaurant concept with Cooper and Company Chairman Peter Cooper. Finally, in December 2012, they will open not just one but three new eateries within the Britomart precinct. Already well known for their innovative approach and consistent quality within their current stable of cafes – which includes Cafe on Kohi, Takapuna Beach Cafe & Store and Richmond Road Cafe – Jackie and Scott can’t help but bubble with excitement as they talk about their new ventures. “We want Auckland to be a better place to live, eat and drink – like Melbourne or San Francisco,” says Jackie. The pair see Britomart as an ideal opportunity to continue their quest, with the opening next month of The Store on Gore Street, plus a bistro and a dessert restaurant-wine bar in the new Pavilions development. After years managing international hotels around the world, they headed back to Auckland. When, one weekend morning in the eastern bays, they were unable to find a good coffee that didn’t involve queuing up at a counter, they simply decided to open a cafe themselves. Calling on all the skills learned in five- and six-star hotels, they quickly altered the Auckland perception of a good cafe.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE Their desire for good coffee has extended to include all the ingredients they use. So important is the provenance and quality of the food that they now work directly with growers and producers to source everything they need. Soon they’ll begin making their own cheese (romano, feta, haloumi, taleggio and mozzarella) using milk from their herd of 39 cows. The 30,000 free-range eggs they require each week will be produced for them exclusively. From their own orchard at Kumeu will come citrus, pecan and macadamia nuts and seven varieties of pears and figs, and beehives on The Pavilions’ roofs will produce honey. They feel so strongly about seasonality that you won’t find a tomato being served in winter in any of their cafes. The Store, which will take over the space previously occupied by Curate, will, says Scott, be a fast-paced enterprise. “It will focus on great takeaway food, fresh pastries and bread plus takeout meals in the evening. You’ll be able to see all the way through to the other end – through the big production kitchen in the middle with a glassed-in pastry room and big ovens which will bake 16 hours a day. “There’ll be quick-fire service for casual tables in the inner courtyard and at night it will be a wine bar. Oh, and you’ll also be able to watch our award-winning gelato and ice cream being made in the gelateria.”

PREPARED WITH CARE Across the walking street a 90-seat bistro called Ortolana will sit beneath a glass canopy, giving a sense of the outdoors

but protected from the elements. Here in an open kitchen headed by executive chef Jo Pearson, and with front of house under the expert eye of Natasha Parkinson (ex Clooney), they will take the very freshest ingredients and prepare casual, elegant, good-quality food. Keen to serve really good wines by the glass, with quality uncompromised by the poor storage of open bottles, Scott and Jackie have imported their own 20-litre wine casks, from which they will serve a small number of carefully selected wines. They will carbonate their own water to order and offer housemade syrups such as rhubarb, rosemary or passionfruit in lieu of fizzy beverages. Adjoining the bistro will be dessert restaurant-wine bar Milse, serving elegant cakes by master pâtissier Brian Campbell, who honed his craft in the kitchens of The French Cafe, Bracu and Kermadec. Here, aside from takeout, you’ll be able to sit at a counter and watch as the chefs prepare and personally serve three-, five- and seven-course dessert degustation menus, or à la carte dishes with matching Chateau d’Yquem champagne, dessert wines and spirits. It’s clear that much of the innovation and creativity around dining that Jackie and Scott are bringing to Britomart is in a league of its own. Nonetheless Jackie says, “We won’t be shouting all about it from the roof tops. We just want people to come and appreciate really good food and know that it has been chosen and put together with care. It’s so simple, really, don’t you think?” Catherine Bell is a cook, food writer and founder of The Garden to Table Trust, which educates and involves children in the growing and preparing of fresh produce. The Trust’s latest project is a 1500sqm garden and classroom facility at Wynyard Quarter. More info at www.gardentotable.org.nz.

HISTORY Jennie Loo in the CPO Building With the opening of her new shoe and accessories boutique in Britomart’s Pavilions development, Jennie Loo has made something of a homecoming. As a child, when her parents ran the iconic local fruit and veggie shop Wing Kee Fruitery, she used to play in the area. Now she has launched a new brand called Lineage, with a concept store located in the centre of the precinct – the area that Jennie recalls as a municipal bus depot in the 1960s. For two decades, Jennie’s family store occupied 1 Queen Street, and it was here that she grew up with her parents and two brothers. She went to school in the city, lived in the city and played in the city. “I consider myself very lucky to have grown up here,” says Jennie of the Britomart area. “Other children didn’t inhabit Queen Street and the surrounding area every day. We roamed Queen Street, caught the Farmers free bus and embraced all that the area offered us; it was our life.” Jennie’s father, Wing Kee, came from South China and purchased the fruitery in the early 1950s. They were

46

surrounded by other small business owners, including delicatessens, a bakery and fish and butcher shops. Each November they sold fireworks, generating lengthy queues along Quay Street. “It was Queen Street in its heyday,” recalls Jennie.

LOVE OF FASHION It was here that Jennie, until recently the owner of the Ashley Ardrey designer shoe business, developed her love of fashion. She remembers beautiful fabrics purchased and lovingly crafted from Smith & Caughey’s and Milne & Choyce, and a shoe shop up the road that let her take shoes back to the fruitery ‘on appro’ for her mother’s approval. “I’ve always loved exploring design,” says Jennie, who first started sewing as a 10 year old. “My mother used to buy me fabric, and because I knew it was expensive, I did the best job I could with it. We couldn’t afford to be wasteful.” Jennie’s hardworking parents didn’t encourage a career in fashion, however, so she drifted into science and for 20 years

Britomart Bus Terminal, circa 1950 was a laboratory technologist for Auckland Hospital. Then a chance conversation – in search for shoes small enough for her size 35 feet – led to the purchase of the Ashley Ardrey stores. “When I heard the business was on the market, I thought this could solve the problem I had finding shoes!” laughs Jennie. In reality, the business gave her the opportunity to do something different in an industry she knew she would enjoy.

HERITAGE AND LINEAGE After occupying sites in High Street, Swanson Street, Newmarket and Wellington, the prospect of returning to Britomart led Jennie to reflect on her family’s connection to the area and the brand she inherited on purchasing Ashley Ardrey.

tHE pAVILIONS So what would Jennie’s father think of his daughter’s return to the community of her childhood, and her successful fashion career? “He wouldn’t have foreseen this,” smiles Jennie. “Girls of my generation didn’t become business people.” Yet it was his vision of a better life for his children that helped shape Jennie’s career. Wing Kee Fruitery and the surrounding area weren’t just where the family worked, but where she grew up; they are Jennie’s lineage. “My father died one week after the shop closed, when the Council ended the lease of all the stores in our block,” says Jennie. “After that, life took a turn; it probably changed the direction I took in life. But it feels good to be coming back – life is coming full circle.”

“Knowing I was coming back to the area where I grew up, I felt the time was right to make a change. Ashley Ardrey was not my name; the new brand Lineage relates to the history my family has with this area.” It also references Jennie’s commitment to classic brands of quality and longevity.

THE BUSINESS BAKERY GEOFF ROSS, CO-OWNER OF INVESTMENT COMPANY THE BUSINESS BAKERY, HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO SPOT A GOOD THING IN THE MAKING.

Six years ago – before Britomart became Britomart – 42Below founder Geoff Ross snapped up the tenancy at the Union Fish Company Building, an old marine warehouse overlooking the Waitemata Harbour. “Back then there were no Ernst & Young or Westpac buildings, and there was no retail,” says Geoff. “42Below had been based in Penrose, which didn’t feel very 42Belowish. We liked Cooper and Company’s vision for Britomart and we liked this old building.” However Geoff’s tenancy was shortlived. No sooner had they begun redesigning the space than 42Below was bought by Bacardi for nowlegendary sums. After nine months Geoff moved on to other things and 42Below was eventually relocated.

54

Fast-forward a few years, though, and Geoff’s back in the original space, this time with The Business Bakery, set up in 2008 with fellow 42Belowers Stephen Sinclair and Grant Baker. It’s here the trio cook up visionary ideas to ensure their carefully nurtured brands take the world by storm.

“We felt 42Below had worked okay, so rather than just bake one business, we wanted to see if we could bake some more,” says Geoff. First on the block was mobile marketing company The Hyperfactory. The Bakery worked their magic, growing the business and eventually selling it to US media giant Meredith. This made way for body, bath and home fragrance brand Ecoya (which also owns natural skincare brand Trilogy), Moa Brewing Co. and finance company Dorchester, the three businesses the Bakery is currently transforming. The Business Bakery’s premises are the perfect backdrop for their aspirational brands. Visitors are greeted

by a giant bearskin rug, a stuffed crocodile and a gargantuan green chandelier. A huge hookah pipe sits in the corner next to a velvet armchair. Boardroom walls are lined with stag heads and wood and leather abound.

“We wanted to make it like a gentleman’s club – give it an oldschool, high-end blokey feel, which suits our Moa brand. People seem to get a kick out of coming here.” But it’s not just visitors who love the location. Geoff – who is also involved in green growth strategy group Pure Advantage and the Melanoma Foundation – reckons he wouldn’t be anywhere else. “Britomart just keeps getting better and better. It’s a great community. I love being next to the water, and we have great views of Takutai Square. We’ve had events in the square with Trilogy and Ecoya, enabling us to showcase our work to our neighbours. The people who buy Ecoya and Moa are the people we bump into at lunch time.”

SANCTUARY IN THE CITY GENERATOR’S SECOND PRIVATE MEMBERS’ CLUB HAS OPENED ITS DOORS AT BRITOMART, PROVIDING AN EXCLUSIVE HAVEN FOR SENIOR EXECUTIVES.

“The original Generator at Stanbeth House is aimed at an entrepreneurial membership of self-employed, typically younger people. It is built around openplan workspaces which inspire a certain type of energy,” says Ryan.

history of the building. Brick walls and blackened steel pillars reference its industrial past, while marine flags, model ships and a shipping-route map feature wall honour its maritime beginnings.

The more sophisticated big brother of serviced business centre and members’ club Generator has opened in one of Britomart’s finest heritage properties, the iconic Northern Steamship Company Building.

“Generator Northern Steamship is more intimate and exclusive. It will appeal to a more senior and established membership and we’ve designed it to reflect that extra level of sophistication.”

Membership packages are tailored to suit the level of flexibility or permanence members require, with resident, corporate and casual options available. Office suites for ‘resident’ members can accommodate up to five people, while there is also a ‘day suite’ for those just passing through.

Tailored for senior executives and established business owners, Generator Northern Steamship is a sanctum for business people seeking first-class serviced office space with wellappointed socialising facilities. According to Generator CEO and founder Ryan Wilson, the elite new club provides everything a business person might need – including a level of service that wouldn’t be out of place in a boutique hotel.

The luxurious first-floor space is made up of small private office suites and a comfortable shared lounge area with sweeping views of the waterfront and a handsome Moa Brewing Co. bar. A private board room is fully kitted out with the latest IT and AV technology, and high-speed internet, copy and print facilities and technical support are available as required. A personal assistant is on hand to take care of any additional little tasks. The club’s fitout pays tribute to the

With a focus on flexibility and support, the club strives to provide a sense of community built around like-minded people. “It’s a private sanctuary that gives our members their own space to work, have a quiet drink, or network and socialise when they’re in the mood,” says Ryan. KUAKA KICK OFF SUMMER AS THE BAR-TAILED GODWITS (KUAKA) DID BEFORE HER, SALLY SMITH’S NEW BRITOMART INSTALLATION HERALDS THE ARRIVAL (AND DEPARTURE) OF SUMMER. ‘Here Just For Summer’ is a striking installation of dozens of tiny birds, each frozen in a phase of flight. Delicately crafted by Waiheke artist Sally Smith from aluminium, copper and stainless steel, the installation appears to float weightlessly across the wall at Britomart Project Space. Smith has long been fascinated by layers of local history, often referring to them in her work. Stanbeth House, which houses her latest exhibition, marks the spot that once formed the edge of Horotiu Bay, summer home of

56

migratory flocks of kuaka, or bar-tailed godwits. Once mudflats with a wide sandy shoreline, the bay was the ideal resting place after an 11,000 kilometre journey from Siberia or Alaska – the longest non-stop flight undertaken by any bird. Echoing their journey, Smith’s installation will spend the summer at Britomart, before moving on again in March. “Where I live on Waiheke we have a small group of kuaka who settle on the foreshore of Te Huruhi Bay over summer,” she says. “Their arrival is always noted and my heart fills with admiration for these tiny birds and the massive journey they have taken to reach our shores. As humans we make that trip in air conditioned, aluminium

tubes – they make the trip exposed to the elements. For such fragile beings you have to admire their courage.” Smith lives with her two sons and partner Chris Bailey, carver of the ‘Pou Tū Te Rangi’ standing posts located in the Sanctuary Garden of The Pavilions. After running her own architectural practice for 20 years, Smith retired in 2010 to focus full-time on her art, which has received national and international acclaim. She now exhibits all over the world and has works in private collections in France, Italy, the UK, the US and Australia.

VIRTUAL REALITY THE REAL AND THE VIRTUAL COLLIDE IN THE REMARKABLE WORKS OF DIGITAL ARTIST JAE HOON LEE, RECENTLY ON DISPLAY AT BRITOMART PROJECT SPACE. In a sublime marriage of the natural and the technological, the works of digital artist Jae Hoon Lee are not what they first seem. At a glance, his richly-layered photographic images appear authentic, but closer inspection reveals an intricately-crafted interplay of the real and the manipulated. Applying subtle tricks of modern technology to traditional photography, Lee transforms everyday objects and surroundings into remarkable compositions.

A selection of his works were on show at Britomart Project Space, the mini-gallery in the window facade of Stanbeth House, from September to November. These works, comprised of moving images displayed on digital screens, explored the textures and details of computers, leaves and skin. In ‘Salvation’, Lee stitched together images of old computer equipment to create a ‘motherboard’ of all machines. ‘A Leaf’ integrated numerous images of a leaf’s annual life cycle, resulting in one endlessly looping hybrid leaf made up of many.

Born in Korea in 1973, Lee studied Fine Arts with a major in sculpture in San Francisco, before moving to Auckland in 1998 to study at Elam. He graduated with a Doctorate of Fine Arts in 2012. Something of a nomad, Lee travels the world collecting source material for his work. He exhibited at Britomart courtesy of Starkwhite, Auckland.

In ‘Camouflage’, Lee created a timeless portrait of his community by melding together random ethnographic samples of faces that he had digitally altered with a flatbed scanner.

Chocolate made Philippe famous, but his market stall offers an equally tantalising array of baked goods: croissants, pains au chocolat. And our favourite: fruit danishes, all buttery flaky pastry with that tangy hit of goodness in the middle.

Almost too pretty to eat, this delight of contrasting flavours and textures plays silky chocolate fondant against zesty pineapple carpaccio, raspberry sorbet and a brûlée flavoured with sour mandarin-like fruit yuzu. Shared only grudgingly.

Sue Menzies has been part of the City Farmers’ Market since it was founded in 2006, seizing the opportunity to “get in on the ground floor” when farmers’ markets were still a novelty in New Zealand. Sue is a familiar face to regular marketgoers and has a strong regular clientele for her popular cheese and salami stall. For almost four years Sue has also been the market manager, overseeing the market setup, assisting stallholders if needed and ensuring every market day runs smoothly.

SUE MENZIES 66

Sue’s stall sells products from The Cheese Barn and Basecamp Venison Salamis, both of which are long-established family businesses. The Cheese Barn at Matatoki Farm in Thames has been run by the same family for 14 years and

specialises in vegetarian-friendly organic cows’ milk cheeses, including traditional Dutch gouda, feta, camembert, haloumi and mozzarella. Basecamp Venison Salamis was started in West Auckland 20 years ago and now makes all its manukasmoked salamis and smallgoods in Katikati, Bay of Plenty. Venison salami’s point of difference is its very low fat content – being 97% venison meat – and its glutenfree status. Smoke-cooked over seven hours, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, making it an ideal food for picnics and Kiwi outdoor activities. “They’re all good products, and people just keep coming back,” says Sue. “Everyone likes what they buy.”

Warm summer days call for refreshing and healthy food and drinks – which Urban Fuel Juice Bar delivers perfectly. Promoting a healthy lifestyle with the ease and accessibility of a market stall, owner Erik Cheah aims to “help the nation stay healthy” and serves 100% pure, raw and freshly-squeezed juices. All Urban Fuel’s fruit and vegetables are sourced locally and Erik’s creations contain no added preservatives or sugars. Pure organic wheatgrass shots take juices and smoothies to the next level, providing the equivalent goodness of a whole kilogram of green vegetables. Alongside the popular juices and real fruit smoothies are hot fruit teas sourced from Kerikeri. Erik is a strong believer in getting vitamins and fibre from their natural source – fresh local fruit and vegetables – rather than the supplements people often rely on. The most popular juice is the ‘Powerboost’ featuring apple, spinach, cucumber and mint. Erik’s priority is to provide an abundance of rich green super-veggies to “maximize the goodness that people can absorb”. Having tried many farmers’ markets over the years, Erik says that the City Farmers’ Market is by far his favorite, with friendly stallholders, high-quality produce and a fantastic atmosphere. A view surely shared by his many dedicated customers.

DEVELOPMENT DOWNLOAD THE NEXT TWO HERITAGE BUILDINGS AT BRITOMART TO GET THE TLC TREATMENT will be AUSTRALIS HOUSE AND THE NATHAN BUILDING. A full programme of refurbishment for two more of Britomart’s fine historic buildings is now in the planning stages. Australis House and the Nathan Building, both fronting Customs Street East and backing onto Takutai Square, date from 1904 and 1903 respectively. They were first built as merchants’ warehouses and have most recently been home to The Nathan Club and The Australis Room venue space. Restoration will include the cleaning of the interior and exterior brickwork, plaster repairs and new brickwork pointing, polishing of heritage native timber floors and use of salvaged timber to replace damaged woodwork. Local basalt stone plinths and steps will be restored and the exterior will be repainted in Victorian colours. Acoustic, service and structural upgrades will also be undertaken. The ground floor of the two buildings will be occupied by high-end retail and hospitality businesses, opening out onto Takutai Square and adjacent Roukai Lane as well as Customs Street East. A basement bar is also planned, with access from Roukai Lane. The upper levels will house four floors of boutique character office space.

68

The last full heritage restoration project to be completed at Britomart was the award-winning Stanbeth-Excelsior development one block further along Customs Street East. Stanbeth House and Excelsior House are now home to 1885 Britomart, Cafe Hanoi and Shaky Isles Coffee Co.

Like Stanbeth-Excelsior, the Australis-Nathan project will be undertaken as a single development, with shared service amenities and a common lift and stairwell core. As with Britomart’s previous heritage projects, Cooper and Company is working closely with the Auckland Council heritage compliance team and heritage architects Salmond Reed. The completion of the Australis-Nathan project will bring the number of fully refurbished heritage buildings in the precinct to 10, with eight more to be undertaken in the coming years. On completion, it will be the largest heritage restoration project ever undertaken in New Zealand.

WATER FOR AFRICA LIFE AT BRITOMART MAY SEEM A MILLION MILES AWAY FROM AN IMPOVERISHED AFRICAN VILLAGE, BUT THANKS TO SOME COMPASSIONATE BRITOMART LOCALS, THERE IS A CONNECTION. In August 2012 a group of Kiwis travelled to Uganda to help build and install four 100,000-litre rainwater tanks at a home for abandoned and orphaned infants. It was part of an initiative called The Village Project, which aims to bring better living conditions to the war-torn East African country. Among them was Toni Brandso from Material Creative, a Britomart business and one of the founding members of local sub-group The Village Project Britomart. Prior to the tanks being built, orphanage workers would have to walk 12km to the nearest well to collect clean water. Now water is collected in wire-reinforced

concrete towers – the same type of tank pioneered on Waiheke Island by Brett McDonald, whose daughter Emily Parsons founded The Village Project.

load that would take us about an hour here takes a whole week over there, once you’ve got the water, washed things by hand, and tried to dry them.”

Life-giving projects such as these spurred a group of Britomart businesses – Material Creative, Westpac New Zealand and Cooper and Company – to partner with Emily and create The Village Project Britomart team.

Back at Britomart, Toni and the local team are continuing to think of ways to support the work of The Village Project. The most recent initiative is a design collaboration with WORLD, resulting in a very cool collection of limited-edition water bottles. These are now selling for $18 and $20 instore at WORLD, at Britomart Christmas giftwrapping stalls and on The Village Project website www.thevillageproject.org.nz, with proceeds to The Village Project.

A well-attended ‘Good Drinks’ evening held in July at The Nathan Club helped raise money for a new concrete mixer for the rainwater tank project. Fundraising is one thing, but actually being on the ground and experiencing how important water is when it doesn’t just stream from a tap was ‘lifechanging’ according to Toni. “It’s the little, everyday things we do with water here in New Zealand that become a really big deal when you’re over there – and it really makes you see things in whole new light,” she says. “Just washing clothes, for example – a

The team is keen to do more to help and encourages anyone interested in donating time and practical support to The Village Project to email emily@thevillageproject.org.nz. Read more about The Village Project Britomart at www.britomart.org/ village-project.

ESPRESSO WORKSHOP

FUKUKO NO 1. CUP

COLD-BREWED SINGLE ORIGIN COFFEE

For those new to shochu, it’s a Japanese spirit that lends itself to vividly-flavoured infusions. New Tyler Street bar Fukuko specialises in stunning shochu cocktails – like this delightful number, infused with orange and sweet vermouth.

On a mission to educate the coffee palates of Auckland, the Workshop is serving cold-brewed coffee, delivering a more delicate cup, lower in acid and caffeine. We tried the lovely Kenya Gatunyu, fragrant with notes of orange peel and lime.

MULA

A&M has a deserved reputation for an excellent wine list, laden with gems like this gorgeous pinot noir from Amisfield. Dark, rich and generous, with tons of plum and cherry and hints of spice and white pepper, this is pinot as it should be.

It’s Spanish for ‘mule’, but this refreshing concoction bears only a passing resemblance to the Moscow kind. A bracing blend of tequila, mezcal, vanilla liqueur, pineapple and lime juice, it transports you instantly to beaches you have known.

Among the 102 beers with which Brew plies the city’s beer purists is the range from Britomart neighbours Moa Brewing Co. Blanc Evolution is a wheaty bottle-fermented drop, with a little added coriander, making it rich, mouthfilling and spicy.

You won’t find bottled soft drinks at Ortolana – instead, these food purists serve their own lovingly-made fruit and herb syrups with water freshly spritzed in front of you. We tried strawberry with sage flowers and citrus zest: glorious.

Forget the nasty stuff you mixed with Coke before you knew better; premium aged rum is the real deal. The 12-year-old Venezuelan Diplomático is far too good to mix: rich, complex, raisiny and full of cakey spice. A revelation for the rum rookie.

Mixologist extraordinaire Milton will happily whip you up one of his trademark tropical delights, made from fruity feijoa, pineapple, cucumber, passionfruit and fennel gin, and the kicker: a decent spike of chilli. A definite party starter.

BRITOMART RANDOM BITS SLOW-MO PROMO Projected onto the wall above The Britomart Country Club in November: an ultra-slow-mo film featuring Kiwi celebrities like you’ve never seen them. The film was made to raise awareness for Y for Youth, a notfor-profit group targeting New Zealand’s grim youth statistics. The four-minute 2000-frames-per-second looped clip showed muso Tiki Taane jumping in slow motion, Shortland Street actress Amanda Billing swamped by jelly balls and TV presenter Jo Holley splattered with paintfilled balloons.
