The Irving and Aaronel deRoy Gruber Foundation Exhibiton Catalog 2020
On view at the Irving and Aaronel deRoy Gruber Foundation are nearly a hundred works by Aaronel deRoy Gruber and materials from her studio, selected from the Foundation’s sizable collection and diverse archive, with some objects shown for the first time. This inaugural exhibition, covering primarily the 1960s-1980s period of Aaronel’s studio practice, includes a range of the artist’s vibrant sculptures integrating tinted, vacuum-formed acrylic and Plexiglas, several with kinetic and light elements; abstract expressionist paintings and minimalist dimensional canvases; serigraphs and prints incorporating fluorescent pigments; wearable sculptural accessories; and photographs demonstrating the artist’s eye for geometric patterns throughout architecture and design. Also on-site is an outdoor installation of ten large-scale solid steel and aluminum sculptures, which the artist crafted in conjunction with American Forge & Manufacturing Co., McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania and other fabricators. Maquettes, technical drawings and documentation offer a glimpse into public art commissions achieved by the artist. An assortment of Aaronel’s material samples, original exhibition or promotional items, and studio notes illustrate the production processes as well as public face of a remarkable artist.
