The Healing power of nature
Senior Thesis 2014
OVERVIEW
Project Details Size: 39,787 sq ft Location: Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Type: Mixed-use Healing Facility
Project Highlights Seeking LEED Certification Chromotherapy Practices Natural Lighting Integrated Landscape Sheltered Courtyards Multipurpose Rooms
Chlorophyll The concept for this mixed-use healing facility is inspired by Chlorophyll, an essential part of survival that provides energy and reflects light. This process emphasizes the importance of visible light and produces many health benefits.
Absorbs red and blue light
Reflects green light
1. Reflects light 2. Produces energy
This development challenges spatial relationships and pushes sustainable standards. Inspired by the natural process, a division of space connects five energy hubs together to stimulate activity and encourage well-being. Throughout the transitional lobby, clinic, exercise area, counseling center and educational spaces, finding new ways to incorporate plants into the interior are explored. Other design aspects are incorporated throughout the space to create a dialogue between the surrounding environment and the interior. Inspired by the native plant community, the landscape visually creates a solution for circulation by the use of way finding. An interactive healing garden is incorporated in the facility to promote environmental characteristic and reinforce the concept. Also to blur the line between health care and hospitably an abstract medicine of Chromotherapy was used in furniture, fixtures and equipment to enhance the overall experience.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
1. Integrate the surrounding elements of the location into the space through the use of sustainable materials and local resources and incorporate natural day lighting into the building
2. Provide interactive resources that advocates the awareness of the diseases and promote environmental & active design through a healing garden
3. Create an abstract medicine within the design through Chromotherapy
3. Create a unique and peaceful experience for both the patient and family
US Indian Reservations
The 1789 Agreement between the tribes and government agreed to provide Native Americans with free healthcare on Reservations. Currently, funding is provided to over 2.5 million Native Americans. However, federal funding is running out and being distributed to other causes. In 2013, funds were cut by two-thirds, leaving the average cost to $1,600 per person which is well under the amount needed for healthcare. Native Americans are: Twice as likely to have diabetes 60% more likely to have a stroke 30% higher blood pressure 20% heart disease The Infant death rate is 40% higher than the average American Run a higher risk of suicide, alcoholism, and depression Causative factors Lack of Federal Funding Geographical Isolation Poverty Poor Nutrition Poor Education Cultural Barriers Inadequate access to sign-up process
pine ridge Indian Reservation A community rich in culture and traditions, but poor in health and well-being The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, located in South Dakota is an ideal situation where the interconnectivity between nature and healing is prevalent. The facility provides energy hubs that improves the needs of patients and brings awareness to one of the most common chronic conditions, diabetes. Also, Chlorophyll directly impacts these health issues which further drives this concept.
The Indian Health Service (IHS) in the Great Plains Area provides services to 18 tribes located in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa.
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is in a “chronic state of crisis due to oversight and economical issues.

Native Dwellings
Numerous architectural shelters were designed across the country. The Great Plains specifically constructed buffalo hide tipi’s provided safe dwellings for tribes. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is located in that region.
A watercolor, studying the Pueblo’s of Mesa Verde, displays the connectivity of the community (Right).

Social Solution A social intervention is prevalent throughout the space. A connection between the architecture and the program or function is prevalent to heal a community rich in culture and tradition but poor in health.
To highlight an intervention, an interaction of color between red and green complement each other to create a dialogue between the architecture and activity of the space.

Healing Garden It is the focal point that interconnects and brings together the energy hubs and interactive spaces. An area of assembly was designed for Pow wows, tribal dances and other traditions to celebrate their culture and revive their energy and spirits.

How does red and blue light affect plant growth?
Scale: 1/8” = 1’0”
Terrarium (Plant Aquariums)
Conceptual Model Terrarium | Succulent Bowl
Too much red light can be fatal to the plants
A combination of red and blue light encourages flowering An indoor Terrarium is incorporated to encourage users to participate within the facility and leave their footprints, but take their memories.
*By taking a few minutes out of my day to put this together, I was able to relax, destress, and enjoy nature. Idealy this interactive healing facility will promote the same attitude of bliss and revelry.
Blue light increases vegetative leaf growth
Mimela The name is dervived from the meaning “circle in the Lakota language. The circle is symblic for connectivity, unity, a cycle and boundless energy, that further drives this concept. This particular energy hub provides social functions for the community and fundraises for healthcare expenses.

The lobby transitions from day to night with artificial lighting to change the mood and reinforce the concept. By using artificial red and blue lighting at night, plant growth increases.

Clinic Flooring Options
The importance of healthcare design goes beyond aesthetics. High-quality design depends on a blend between hospitality and healthcare, FF&E (furniture, fixtures and equipment) that accommodate the needs of all user types, a simple circulation path, and many other aspects that contribute to a functional space. The exam rooms include four different flooring materials and varying decor so that patients receive a new experience every visit. Also, the Chameleon exam table is upholstered an innovative color changing material (ChroMyx artificial leather) that “gives kids something to play with to ease anxiety. Casework
The cabinets are embedded with a LED lighting that changes color to impact the environment.
Kartell, only me mirror
Exercise Area This “energy hub focuses on the physical health of the patients. An indoor bounce house, yoga and dance studio are incorporate to encourage healthy and fun activities to address the issue of diabetes.
Precedent
Counseling Center Color has a psychological impact on an individual. Chromotherapy, or color therapy can have healing aspects that lower the heart rate and sooth the mind. By bringing attention to these emotions in the counseling area, patients have the opportunity to choose a pod with their counselor based on how they are feeling. The health effects of color:
Creative
Calming + Relaxing
Healing + Safety
Happiness + freedom
Sociable

Art Garden A graffiti plant wall creates a dialogue between art and plants. Patients are able to express themselves after counselling using a combination of paint and plants on this living wall. Other arts and craft activities can include painting rocks found in the healing garden.
