Every employer has the right to form and join an employers’ organization and to participate in the activities of the organization; and every trade union, employers’ organization and employer has the right to engage in collective bargaining. South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry has approved a R200-million grant and a five-year plan for the establishment of the Southern African Sustainable Textile and Apparel Cluster (Sastac), in a bid to improve the industry’s competitiveness while uniting it under an umbrella body. Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said the initiative sought to build the capacity of South Africa’s industry to supply local and international consumers with “fully traceable sustainable apparel and household textile products”. This would include supplying textile and apparel products that adhered to the 100% local content requirement for procurement by local government. A key driver of change is the South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU). Tired of retailers shipping millions of tonnes of clothes halfway round the world, SACTWU has a buy local policy. To promote this, the union runs shops that stock “Made in South Africa” clothing and is famous for its Spring Queen Pageant in which garment workers model clothes they have made. Garment workers in South Africa are predominantly women, often single mothers and their family’s soul breadwinner. SACTWU states that 70-80% of garment workers are union members, which places the union in a strong position to negotiate for good conditions. “We produce in an ethical way, we are not producing in a sweatshop environment.”

The Constitution contains a Bill of Rights, Chapter Two, which enshrines the rights of all South Africans. The following labour rights are enshrined in the Constitution: Freedom of Association : Labour Relations Everyone has the right to fair labour practices Every worker has the right to form and join a trade union and to participate in the union’s activities; Every worker has the right to strike

South Africa is rated as the number one country technologically advanced in Africa. IT standards have been applied to public sector organizations and has been praised for being used towards open source software. Open source software promote liability and transparency within organizations. South Africa also has good mobile and network coverage. The South African government’s goal is to provide broadband access through the country by 2030. There are a few improvements that need to be made regarding the high software piracy and low patents.

Soy Luxe (product name) Always protect your comforter from direct contact with body oils. Launder no more than once every two to three years unless there is obvious soiling; more frequent washing will shorten the life of your comforter. Machine wash in an oversized machine without a center agitator, using warm water and mild detergent on the delicate cycle. Check seams and fabric before washing; if weakness is evident, do not home launder. In order to fully dry the down clusters and to prevent mildew from forming, thoroughly dry on low heat well beyond the point where the outer fabric feels dry (approximately 3–4 hours). Place a couple of tennis balls or dryer balls inside the dryer to aid in the drying process. Air-dry for an additional 24 hours to release any moisture. In between laundering, occasionally place comforter outside in fresh air and direct sun to restore freshness. Frequent fluffing will help retain loft.

SoyLuxe (name product) Our linen is machine washable. We recommend machine washing on the gentle or delicate cycle with like colors, with cold water and a natural, plant based laundry detergent. We do not recommend using whiteners, as bleaching agents may diminish the brilliance and depth of the colors; when needed, use only non-chlorine bleach. Line dry, or tumble dry low and remove promptly. Use a steamer as needed. Use a hot iron as needed.

Soy Luxe chose Brazil because it is one of the leading countries that produce soybeans. Although our bedding contains mainly soybeans we wanted to incorporate organic cotton, which is also produced in Brazil. It is also located in South America, which makes it convenient to keep in contact with our manufacturers and near the South Atlantic Ocean . Brazil is in close proximity to the United States, which means trips to suppliers and manufacturers would be much shorter and quicker than flying to another country. Taxation is high, but shipping is cheap, the cost of shipping a 40ft freight is $1,250. The lead time from Sao Paulo to New York is 20-14 days. There are currently many organizations and laws bringing awareness to environmental issues, protecting our environment, and helping people change their habits to help the environment. Aside from sustainability being one of our biggest factors, we were concerned about labor laws too. Brazil has fair wages and the labor laws are enforced. South Africa was also a good choose for Soy Luxe they sell more than 40,000 tons per year and they have plenty other natural resources that could be beneficial to Soy Luxe such as vegetable fibres. They are all about sustainability whether it is in the workplace or outside of it. They look out for their employees seeing as 80% of their factory workers are women SA has set of laws to make sure that they are protected. Also the lead time is not that long from 22-31 days is the range from east coast Savannah, GA to west coast San Francisco,CA being the longest. For a 40ft container the price would range from $3,0003,485 which is relatively a good price range of how SA is from the United States. Another good factor about SA is that most of their textiles decorative surfaces are hand made for future movement for the company if we would like to add embellishments we could get them hand made and do a free fair wage, where the artists set their price. Supplier reasoning: After keeping in mind our corporate social responsibilities, we wanted to pick suppliers and manufacturers that shared the same values as us. We cared about the customers that will buying their products. While taking into consideration the chemicals that are used and how it would affect their customers. We picked our suppliers based on factors of sustainability and the process that they go through to produce cotton, soybeans, and textiles. We wanted our manufacturers to care about the health of their customers and workers as much as we do.

South Africa and Brazil are the best match for the Soy Luxe company’s profile, cost requirements and products because each country’s political and economic state are very favorable. The quality of the business environment in each country is in good which attracted our investment. These manufacturers benefit us because they specialize in organic bedding, source their own material and produce their own products. This reduces the amount of supply chain channels to ensure close monitoring of company compliance with regulations of labor and sustainable sourcing of materials.

Soy Luxe strives to provide the best quality bedding products for our customers. We care about all the people that are invested in our brand whether it is the farmers, manufacturers or buyers. We push to have organic materials and taking the appropriate actions to preserve the environment and not cause more damage to it.
