Soda spring healing waters

MANITOU SPRINGS

COLORADO’S EARLY RESORT DESTINATION Long before European explorers discovered the Pikes Peak Region, the American Indians of the area knew of the bubbling soda and iron springs at the base of their sacred mountain Tava, now known as Pikes Peak. The Nations of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache were all visitors during their migrations over the centuries, while the Utes considered the springs to be part of their mountain homeland. Though enemies, these tribes would practice restraint around the medicine springs. They drank the water filled with trace minerals and stomach-soothing soda and bathed in skin-softening pools.

62

800-642-2567

EARLY EXPLORERS The Spanish were the first Europeans in the area, followed by French mountain men interested in fur trapping, who named the creek running next to the springs “Fountaine qui Bouille,” or Boiling Fountain Creek. With the Louisiana Purchase, the United States sent Lt. Zebulon Pike and company to explore the new territory in 1806.

George Fredrick Ruxton, whose 1847 travels to Pikes Peak are chronicled in his book, “Adventures in Mexico and the Rocky Mountains.” He described the picturesque location and the superior quality of the mineral water which “hissed and sparkled” in his cup, declaring it possessed “that fresh, natural flavor which manufactured water can not impart.”

Though Pike would miss the springs entirely, he did report on his attempted climb of the mountain that carries his name today.

Once the 59’ers started to flock to Colorado during the Pikes Peak or Bust gold rush, traffic increased dramatically as fortune hunters used the old Indian trail up Ute Pass as a route to the gold fields of Cripple Creek and Victor.

Dr. Edwin James, botanist of the 1820 Long Expedition, was the first American to climb the peak and write about the springs and their health benefits. By far the most widely read review of Manitou’s charms was penned by English officer and adventurer

| MANITOUSPRINGS.ORG

By 1868 the Cheyenne and Arapaho were removed to reservations, and Utes met the same fate in 1879, separated from the sacred places of their ancestors. In 1868, Gen. William Jackson Palmer,

railroad engineer, and Dr. William A. Bell, physician, investigated the already-famous medicine springs while on a Kansas and Pacific Railroad survey. MINERAL SPRING WATER

Take a tasting tour of Manitou Springs’ 8 naturally-effervescent, cold water drinking springs. Located throughout the historic downtown area, each spring has a uniquely designed font. Maps and tasting cups are available at the Manitou Visitors Center at 354 Manitou Ave.

or centuries, indigenous Americans passing through the Pikes Peak Region stopped in the Valley of the “Medicine” springs to drink and bathe in the waters and pay homage to the healing spirits of the mineral springs. They believed the water to be a gift from the Great Spirit. By the 1890s, the small mining town of Manitou Springs was re-discovered by tuberculosis patients from the east seeking the relief of the healing waters and the dry mountain air. 64

Now there are 8 naturally carbonated mineral springs throughout the Manitou Springs Historic District. All bubble up from the karst aquifer deep under the town. The karst aquifer permeates the water with natural carbonation as it is forced to the surface. Minerals from the surrounding rock dissolve into the water as it is forced to the surface. The cool, refreshing water is available and easily accessible for drinking from unique, artistic fonts. Each spring has a slightly different taste.

MINERAL SPRINGS STRATTON SPRING

TWIN SPRING

Drilled by the Stratton Foundation during the Depression as a service to the town, this popular spring stands at the intersection of indigenous trails, the historic trolley lines, and the modern highway system.

Twin Springs is the locals’ favorite spring for its sweet taste, calcium and potassium content and for making Manitou Lemonade or Manitou Mojitos. Originally two springs, Twin Springs now has been merged into one font.

CHEYENNE SPRING

NAVAJO SPRING

IRON SPRING

The natural soda water of Cheyenne Springs was originally bottled at the Manitou Bottling Plant. The stone Manitou Spa Building was built around Cheyenne Spring in 1893. Today this spring is piped to the cast bronze font designed and built by sculptor Paul Rogers.

Navajo Spring was near the Ute Pass Trail and was a rendezvous for indigenous peoples, explorers and early settlers. The font is located on the back outside wall of current-day Patsy’s Candies Store. The candy store was originally a sampling room for the bottling works.

Once the most popular spring in Manitou, thousands of health-seekers would travel to Ruxton Ave. to drink the iron waters. The current spring was drilled by a local entrepreneur in 1910 and made wildly popular by adding orange and lemon flavoring.

SHOSHONE SPRING

SEVEN MINUTE SPRING

WHEELER SPRING

A natural spring with the highest levels of many minerals, Shoshone Springs was highly recommended by physicians of the 1800s for its curative uses before modern medicine.

Drilled to enhance the park of the Mansions Hotel in 1909, carbonation caused it to erupt at 7 minute intervals. It was re-drilled in the 1990’s and again in 2014.

Wheeler Spring was donated to the city by the family of Jerome Wheeler, who was one time president of Macy’s department store, mining and railroad magnate, banker, and chief promoter plus president of the Manitou Mineral Bottling Company.
