Award-winning lunchtime concerts combining chamber masterworks with new pieces co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall
AT LUNCH
Escape the day’s routine for an hour and listen to players from Britten Sinfonia perform specially selected chamber masterworks, alongside a new work co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall. The variety of pieces performed means that there is something for everyone. Chamber music, by nature, allows the personality of the performers to come through on stage and at our pre-concert discussions at Wigmore Hall you can hear more from each composer. In 2013-14, we look forward to the first At Lunch appearances of our own vocal ensemble, Britten Sinfonia Voices (At Lunch 2) and our talented youth ensemble, Britten Sinfonia Academy (At Lunch 5).

The 2013-14 At Lunch series begins with one of the pinnacles of Fauré’s chamber output, his superbly crafted second piano quartet. The quartet strikes a genuinely equal balance amongst the four instrumentalists, three of whom will also give the World premiere of a new work for string trio by Scottish-based composer Sally Beamish. We complete the programme with a movement from one of Mozart’s Violin Sonatas and Lutoslawski’s Duo for viola and cello, whose centenary is celebrated in 2013.

Founded in 2012, Britten Sinfonia Academy is an auditioned youth ensemble for the most talented classical musicians of secondary school age from the east of England. Just like our other At Lunch concerts, this performance will pair dynamic and key pieces of repertoire with an exciting new commission, this time by one of Britten Sinfonia’s long term collaborators, Philip Cashian. Philip will spend a weekend with the Academy in residence at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, working on musical ideas inspired by the paintings in the galleries.

At Britten Sinfonia we love commissioning and performing new music, mixing the well-known with the new, and the classical with the non-classical. Everyone knows Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. But what about Sally Beamish, Brett Dean or William Cole? Many of today’s most brilliant composers face the challenge of going up against music that has been performed for centuries. Each At Lunch concert premieres a new work from some of the best composers of today. Musically Gifted is a new way for you to invest in what you hear on stage. From just £10, you can help commission a new piece as a gift for yourself or as a present for someone special. Not too many gifts come with a guarantee that they will last forever, but this is one of them.
