All About...

DIANE Von Fürstenberg moved to New York City in late 1969. Although she had no financial need to work, she has stated that she craved independence. She started working during out of the dining room of her Park Avenue. She found inspiration in the fashion lines of Bill Blass and Kenny Lane and by Diana Vreeland. Von Fürstenberg took the fashion world by storm when she introduced her now-iconic “wrap dress” for the working woman in 1972. She was then able to opened a Seventh Avenue showroom.

By the mid 1970s, von Fürstenberg’s “wrap dress” had revolutionized American women’s apparel. It was versatile—working as both a comfortable business dress and an elegant evening gown. Furstenberg became a powerful fashion icon in the 70s. Popularized by a growing number of career-minded women. By 1976, she had sold 5 million wrap dresses.

Facts you didn’t know about Diane: 1. She was born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin on December 31, 1946 in Belgium.

Success continued for a life long career. In 2008 Von Furstenberg told The Independent, “The wrap dress was an interesting cultural phenomenon, and one that has lasted 30 years. What is so special about it is that it’s actually a very traditional form of clothing. It’s like a toga, it’s like a kimono, without buttons, without a zipper. What made my wrap dresses different is that they were made out of jersey and they sculpted the body.” In 2005, the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded her a lifetime achievement award, and the following year named her as their president. She launched the DVF Awards in 2010, a scheme which aims to recognise women whose leadership skills and vision have has a positive impact on the lives of other women around the world. In August 2010, she promised to give away half of her fortune to the Giving Pledge an initiative set up by Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett to encourage America’s richest families to donate money to society’s most serious problems. Von Fürstenberg has had a lasting impression of the fashion industry.

2. Though most of us pronounce her name “Di-anne” her friends and family pronounce it “Dee-on” 3. Diane did not study fashion design, she actually studied economics at the University of Geneva. 4. While in Geneva she met, fell in love with and married an actual Prince- Prince Egon von Furstenberg of Germany, making her a Princess. 5. With Egon, she had two children, Prince Alexander and Princess Tatiana. 6. When Diane and Egon officially divorced in 1983 she was no longer allowed to keep the title Princess, but did keep the last name. 7. DVF did not become a U.S. citizen until 2002. 8. She has judged on the show Project Runway, where Heidi Klum is the host.

"It's more than just a dress, it's a spirit,”
