UAV Research Facility Today the focus of much of government research is in the field of stealth technology. Since the days of skunk works large amounts of money have been dumped into the development of new stealth and aerospace technologies. UAV, or unmanned airial vehicles, are proving to be the future of government stealth technologies and tactics.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Essentially any aircraft (military or non military) that can be flown or operated remotely. Two major variations include automonous vs piloted autonomous UAV are able to follow pre assigned paths and operate entirely on its own for extended periods of time. piloted UAV are controlled remotely by an operate and would crash without human guidance
The project proposes an advanced UAV research & development facility that is intended to continued to push the advancement of the technologies. Currently there are no flight research centers devoted solely to the development of UAV platforms, however with the ever expanding and increasing demand for easily operable and inherently safe stealth capabilites, a facility dedicated to the specific task would allow for undreamt of improvements and advances. Located 5 miles east of the City of Cody, Wyoming, just of Hwy 14, the proposed site is essentially a blank canvas with a elevated plateau in the northern most portion of the site. The requirements of the program and the necessary governmental secrecy associated with any government contract warrants a site with seclusion and protectiong, while still allowing for the testing and develpment of vehicles intended for flight. Therefore, a runway and typical airport features are also necessities for this program.
Abstract There are two primary reasons for proposing to design a UAV Research and Development Facility, one informative, the other architectural. I am fascinated with the idea of autonomous and remotely operated flight. I have been working on (what will eventually be) a autonomous/remotely operated quadcopter and have always been intrigued with the idea of unmanned flight. By proposing a design project that involves interests/hobbies, I will have an increased hunger to learn more and will be able to dig deeper into the workings of UAV intelligence. I am very interested in exploring the idea of parametric design in which the design process begins by first exploring the nuances and intricacies that are evident in the complex engineering of autonomous vehicles, followed by architecture that is responsive to those details. It is a bottom up approach where every element of the final building is entirely integral to its function. Architecture is not just about the whole, but rather about the parts that make up the whole. By understanding every detail of the parts, the whole will begin to materialize in a way that gives meaning and intention its site, its program, its materiality, and its formal design. Designing UAV Research facility proposes some challenging design problems that I have not faced before which I feel could be a great learning experience. Inherently, UAV research will have many classified elements to involved, so the design will have to have a focus not on the public, but rather on the professionals who will be using the facility. This will call for a much different design of the public spaces both inside and surrounding the final building. The scale of public vs. private will be tipped much more towards the private than in other design projects I have worked on. Also the choice of site will be extremely important. The program will require somewhat remote site, but one that is also easily accessible with the ability to offer much privacy.
Macro
Mirco UAV types
MQ-1 reaper the reaper is the faster, stronger and more intimidating big brother to the predator. it is capable of carrying 3x the payload of the preadator while flying 2x faster. the predator family of UAV drones have put UAV research on the forefront of military research
HYV-2 hypersonic glider the HYV-2 is the worlds fastest aircraft. In recent tests if reached speeds in excess of 13,000 mph and is capable of being in any place around the globe in under an hour and a half. still in testing the glider has been launched twice and both times lost signal with the controllers due to the excessive speed
draganfly x6 one of the most advanced multirotor UAV copters, the draganfly is capable of fully automonous flight. The use of multiple rotors allows for unprecedented stability which makes it a perfect platform for survaillence multirotor copters have exploded in development over the past few years and seems to be the direction most defense research is going
delfly micro UAV one of the smallest and lightes UAVs that have flown, the delfly uses a bird like movement and extremely small parts to fly. By being so small the delfly is able to capture images unnoticed in situations where other UAVs would be easily detected.
biologically inspired UAV there is current research in the adaptation of natural flight mechanisms that researchers are trying to use in order to create indefinitely smaller UAVs. There is talk of one day having remote controlled insects, notably flies, that can be cheaply and easily deployed to conduct discreet survaillence. the biggest hurdle is learning how to reproduce the flight mechanism of insects and birds

PROPOSED SITE
cody, wyoming
There were two potential sites that I found in Wyoming. The first was located just outside the small town of Shell at the foot of the Big Horn Mountatins. This site offered the advantages of being secluded, having ample open space, being in the immediate vacinity of a wide range of geographical features, and exposed to a wide range of weather conditions. Its biggest downfall is the distance from a big town and the relative uneven ground that surrounds shell.

PROPOSED SITE
The second site is located just outside of Cody Wyoming, which is not far from Shell. The site had the necessary requirements of wide open space, immediate access to privacy, proximity to a range in geographical features, and a range of weather conditions.
cody, wyoming
HWY 14
ultimately I decided to go with the site just outside of Cody. The primary reason is that it is close to a much bigger city and much closer to a widely travelled highway. In my research I found that easy access to a reliable highway and a large nearby city are pivotal in the development of a reasearch facility.

Incorporated in 1901, Cody is located 52 miles from Yellowstone National Park’s east entrance. Cody was founded by Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody who passed through the region in the 1870s. He was so impressed by the development possibilities from irrigation, rich soil, grand scenery, hunting and proximity to Yellowstone Park that he returned in the mid-1890s to start a town. He brought with him men whose names are still on street signs in Cody’s downtown area: Beck, Alger, Rumsey, Bleistein and Salsbury.

A runway of at least 6,000 ft (1,800 m) in length is usually adequate for aircraft weights below approximately 200,000 lb (90,000 kg). Larger aircraft including widebodies will usually require at least 8,000 ft (2,400 m) at sea level and somewhat more at higher altitude airports. International widebody flights, which carry substantial amounts of fuel and are therefore heavier, may also have landing requirements of 10,000 ft (3,000 m) or more and takeoff requirements of 13,000 ft (4,000 m)+. At sea level, 10,000 ft (3,000 m) can be considered an adequate length to land virtually any aircraft. For example, at O’Hare International, when landing simultaneously on 22R and 28 or parallel 27L, it is routine for arrivals from the Far East which would normally be vectored for 22R (7,500 ft (2,286 m)) or 27L (7,967 ft (2,428 m)) to request 28 (13,001 ft (3,963 m)). It is always accommodated, although occasionally with a delay. Another example is that the Luleå Airport in Sweden was extended to 10,990 ft (3,350 m) to allow any fully loaded freight aircraft to take off.

program site precede
ames research center moffet field, CA
the ames research facility is a pivotal part of the NASA research program, with its focus on aeronautical research. Originally designed to conduct wind tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller driven aircraft, it has been expanded to encomass aeronautical, aerospace, and information technology.
dryden flight research center edwards, CA
the dryden flight research facility is NASA’s most accomplished aeronautical research facility. Many of the most preeminent aircraft and research can be found here. It is notable that the site is located in a remote plain just north of lancaster CA and is next to a large salt flat that is used as test flight runways and launch zones.
glenn research center cleveland, OH
the glenn research center is located on the outskirts of cleveland, and is home to NASAs aerospace research program. It has a nearby satellite facility that is removed from the confines of the ciy due to much higer risk experiments with rocket propulsion. It is an important facility to note becasue of its integration within the city, yet still has a satellite facility removed from the city to allow for high risk testing.
langley research facility hampton, VA
the langley research facility is home to one of the largest subsonic wind tunnels, and devote 2/3 of its energy to aeronautical research while the remaining 1/3 researches aerospace technology. The facility is nestled within hampton, VA yet is able to test aircraft by using the neighboring andrews air force base.

Architects: Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects Location: Central Idaho, USA Kundig does an excellent job of making buildings that become an extension of the landscape (specifically the desert landscape). When inside outpost there is a blurring of what is interior/extrerior and I would like to do the same for the research facility.
