N E W T O B RO ADW AY I N 2 0 1 9 DANCE MINISTRY

The Broadway Dance Ministry was born out of the desire of a group of people from our church to use dance as a form of worship. Dance is mentioned a few times in the Bible. The two most famous instances of God’s people dancing are Miriam’s dancing (Exodus 15:20) and King David’s dancing (2 Samuel 6:16). After Israel’s deliverance from the Red Sea, Miriam praised God with her joyful dancing and tambourines. David also danced before the Lord in celebration when he saw the Ark of the Covenant coming back. The Psalms offer a positive view of dance in worship as well by describing it as a reflection of the joy that the Lord gives us – “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness” (Psalm 30:11) – and by encouraging it - “Let them praise His name with dancing” (Psalm 149:3). 2019 was a very special year for us. We passed the 40-person mark in our ministry and we were also very honoured to be invited by Pastor Paulo to be part of the Singing Christmas Tree. It’s been a dream of ours since the beginning and it was truly a highlight to be able to contribute to our celebration of Christmas in such a meaningful way. We’ve also been to the Lodge and to the Brazilian Ministry to worship with them. The Dance Ministry continues to meet every Monday under the direction of Leila Santana. You are more than welcome to join us even if you don’t have much experience. We just seek to love God and express that through our dancing. 8

THE SKEPTIC COURSE

Every Singing Christmas Tree season gives Broadway Church a chance to build a bridge to the neighborhood over which God’s love and truth can cross into the lives of our thousands of guests. Late in 2018, the idea of creating a vehicle to address the questions most on the minds of those in our community was birthed. The idea developed into the SKEPTIC Course which Broadway offered for the first time in January 2019. Over 300 people attended every Wednesday night for six weeks as Pastor Darin addressed these crucial questions. Each night was supported by a meal together, group discussion, and the opportunity for guests to ask the questions behind their skepticism about Christianity. Special thanks are extended to all the table hosts, food services and technical people, and other volunteers who helped make this event a highlight of last year.

EMPOWER GROUPS

In Fall 2019 a new men’s ministry called Empower Groups was launched with the aim of helping “men strengthen men in Christ”. Empower Groups took the form of men meeting in small groups on Saturday mornings to encourage one another in their personal and spiritual walks, with an emphasis on friendship, accountability, and support. Discussion in the groups was informed by the book, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. A Men’s Breakfast launch saw 30-35 men sign up to join four groups meeting at one of our campuses or in a private home. Empower Groups grew out of a concept put forward by Martin Poller who serves as the Coordinator for this ongoing ministry.

C HI LDREN SUNDAYS AT BROADWAY CHURCH

(Ages 0-10)

KIDS CLUB

We continued to go through the Bible, showing our wonderful children how great our God is through story; and songs, and we had so much fun! Our theme for 2019 was “You Matter and children learned and experineced that they are loved and designed by God. KIDS GIVE TO MISSIONS - Broadway Kids raised money throughout 2019 for great causes including Children of Blessing Trust in Malawi, and our own Broadway missionaries who are living all over the globe.

On Wednesday evenings at our Vancouver Campus we switched our layout to Kids Club and started offering pre-registrered classes. Children were able to choose to experience baking, art, dance, wrestling, music, sport and martial arts. We also told wonderful Bible stories and shared who Jesus is.

NEXT GEN SUNDAY - Our kids helped out on the Greeting teams. GRADUATION SUNDAY - We celebrated summer ending and our great children moving on to the next grade level!

T DISTRIC E N E C CONFER KIDS

Our Port Coquitlam Campus had a wonderful time providing great experinces as well, such as fitness, sport, art, baking, and so much more. Both Kids Clubs grew in numbers in 2019 and were able to include so many children from our community. 10

DISTRICT CONFERENCE (KIDS) Broadway Church (Vancouver Campus) was able to host District Conference in 2019 and Broadway Kids had the pleasure of hosting a fun kids program incuding some special outings (bowling and the indoor beach).

OUR VOLUNTEERS Kids Ministry in 2019 had over 65 dedicated volunteers and because of them, we were able to make all of our kids programs happen. In 2019 we held 2 volunteer training lunches (Feb and Oct). We had a great time sharing vision and getting excited about Kids Ministry.

GIRLS’ DAY

FAMILY PARK DAYS Every Thursday in the summer, we would visit a different park. Families and friends gathered to play together and build relationships with one another. It was a great time!

PARENT AND TOT (FORMALLY MOMMIES GROUP) Every Thursday we hosted a drop-in gathering providing a welcoming environment for parents and their young children to play and get to know other families.

In May, we held a Girls Day specially designed for girls in kindergarten to grade 7. The theme was Bloom, where girls learned the value of who they are in God’s eyes.

KIDS S CAMP

KIDS CAMPS We had 2 great wee-long Kids Day Camps this year (Sping and Summer) We were able to offer 100 free spots for first time attenders at each camp (200 total). At each camp, approximately 280 children attended. At our Sping Camp, Roar, children explored the wild jungle and learned about God’s wild love. Our Summer Camp, To Mars and Beyond, explored space, showing children God’s character, how big our God is and how much He cares for us.

KIDS & CAROLS The kids of Broadway Church took the stage to sing Christmas songs. They all worked so hard to learn the lyrics and actions. They did such a great job singing about the true meaning of Christmas!

PRETEENS

12

ARC PRETEENS (AGES 10 - 13) •

In 2019 we ran 4 preteen services every Sunday reaching 60+ preteens.

We launched our Friday night service at the Vancouver Campus.

Other highlights include: attending the Spark Conference in Langley, running our first ever Preteens Adventure Day Camp and our annual Sleepover event.

We were thrilled to hire Jason Tischer as our Preteens Pastor at our PoCo Campus. 13

ARCHETYPE YOUTH

ARCHETYPE (AGES 13 - 18) 2019 was a defining year for our youth ministry. There were some really big changes and transitions, and we’re really excited to see what God has in store for our young people in the future. Thank you so much for your continued support! We couldn’t do what we do without you. Some of the highlights of 2019

14

Transitions: We said goodbye to some staff members and welcomed new ones! Nathan Traversy stepped into the Youth Ministries Director role, Jason Tischer was brought on as the Port Coquitlam Campus Youth Pastor, and Sydney Teichroeb is the Vancouver Campus Youth Pastor.

We welcomed several new apprentices, including Spencer Gruenhage, Atsu Nickel, Jodel Gimeno, and Brad Hall.

We took two groups of twenty people each to the Yukon in 2019! It was one of our best years yet! Both the children and our team were impacted greatly.

Our interns program was an amazing experience as we welcomed six high school students onto our staff as summer interns. They were poured into by our staff, taught leadership principles and given the opportunity to lead, preach, and serve on missions.

Our annual summer camp, Arc One, was a hit with over seventy people! We had chapel services every night, played games and spent time on the lake during the day!

In November we packed sixty people into the Mt. Seymour Chalet and had an amazing Fall Retreat! It was a great time of community, worship, and growing together.

2020 VISION As we enter into 2020 we’re focusing on one motto: Faithfulness Over Time. We recognize that our students need a consistent positive presence in their lives, and that’s what we aim to provide. It’s the relationships that our leaders build with the students that make all the difference - relationships that are bigger than just a youth night and that continue beyond graduating high school. This year we’re doubling down on what we’ve been doing and we’re introducing some new exciting things, like our Student Lead program which is designed to help students grow in their leadership ability. Our United Services bring together both our Port Coquitlam Campus and Vancouver Campus. And our +1 Nights are specifically designed for outreach and for students to invite their friends to. If your child is in high school and they haven’t been to Archetype, we’d love to meet them! This is a safe place where all are welcome and loved. We’ll be saving them a seat! 15

Y O UNG ADUL T S YOUNG ADULTS

16

8 young adults were hired as Pastoral Apprentices on staff.

We hosted 9 After Hours services.

We sent 11 young adults to Bible College.

There were 13 small groups that ran all year long.

We had a total of 24 small group leaders.

25 young adults served as youth leaders.

130+ young adults registered for small groups.

17

ADULTS WOMEN’S RETREAT 2019 Our theme was “Beauty from Ashes” ( Is. 61:1-4). Cheryl McManus taught us that when we surrender our failures, losses and lies to Jesus, He then starts growing something new in us. We ended the retreat leaving our grave clothes behind and instead being clothed as the bride of Christ in a wedding dress. There was a genuine sense of community and sisterhood among the women. As always, our retreat had many beautiful walking paths and delicious meals. All ladies are welcome to join us this September 25 – 27, 2020.

WOMEN WARRIORS CONFERENCE This is a one-day conference where we can set aside our normal life and take time out for ourselves to grow in our relationships with God and each other. Our next conference is Saturday April 25, 2020 from 8:30am4:00pm. 18

WEDDINGS & FUNERALS

HOSPITALITY

The church continues to participate in the life of people through the momentous seasons in their lives. In 2019 we helped facilitate over a dozen weddings and 17 funerals. It’s a huge honour to be welcomed into peoples’ lives at such important times.

HOSPITALITY MINISTRIES

LADIES MORNING BREAK

Broadway is blessed with an abundance of people serving in our ushers, greeters, and Info Desk ministries. We are thankful to have added Dave Mah as our new head usher. We are so thankful for the many years of excellent service that Noemi Victorino gave us in this area.

This is a Ladies Bible Study held on Tuesday mornings from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Vancouver Campus. We are finishing up our study on Breaking Free by Beth Moore. It is so encouraging to know that God will always be there for us. He will be our strength, hope, our everything. During the morning we have snacks, questions, discussion and time to pray for each other. You are always welcome to join us. 19

G RO W ING IN C HRI S T EMPOWER GROUPS FOR MEN In 2019 we launched a brand-new men’s ministry called “Empower Groups: Men Strengthening Men in Christ”. Over 30 men were involved in 4 groups spanning both Broadway campuses for fellowship and talking over the concepts of Emotionally Healthy Spirituality.

THE SKEPTIC COURSE Our first ever Skeptic Course was strategically designed to reach out to the many guests who attended the Singing Christmas Tree. Pastor Darin gave six talks on crucial questions on the mind of those who feel they don’t have enough evidence to put faith in Jesus. This was followed by small group discussion and an opportunity to ask follow-up questions of Darin. Over 300 attended each night and several continued with the Alpha course that followed.

HEALING HOT SPOT SMALL GROUP INITIATIVE In 2019, Broadway’s small group ministry offered the Healing Hotspot series in the fall as part two of a three-year emphasis on learning in community. Our commitment is to help everyone who wants to be in a group find a group in a home, an office, or at one of our campuses. Over the next two years, we will continue to focus prayer, time, and energy in broadening the scope of small group ministry.

MID-WEEK LEARNING COMMUNITIES OPPORTUNITIES

At Broadway we are committed to see people grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and with others. Our midweek discipleship courses provide opportunities to discover spiritual truth and explore what it means to live day by day as a Christ follower. In 2019 at the Vancouver Campus we offered the Skeptic Course, Life’s Big Questions, Conversational Intelligence, the Doctrine of Salvation, the Book of Acts, and the Healing Hot Spot. At our Port Coquitlam Campus courses included Managing Finances, Boundaries, and Crucial Conversations. 10 couples and 4 support couples also participated in the Marriage Preparation Course in January.

DYNAMIC SPIRITUALITY SUNDAY LEARNING COMMUNITIES We are committed to the systematic teaching of the Bible on Sunday mornings at both of our campuses. Live classes took place in the winter and spring at our Port Coquitlam Campus, and teaching videos were shown at our Vancouver Campus. Classes this year included The Gospel of Mark, the Doctrine of Salvation, the Book of Acts. Additional teaching opportunities included the Chinese classes, the Filipino Bible study, Grief Share, and The Bridge Ministry.

BROADWAY INSTITUTE OF BIBLICAL LEARNING The BIBL was designed for those who want to engage Biblical, personal growth and leadership studies at an undergraduate level. These courses can be audited or taken for credit with Summit Pacific College. In 2019, the Dynamic Spirituality Course was offered with its focus on the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit.

THE ALPHA COURSE The Alpha Course is a basic introduction to Christianity and what it means to follow Christ. Alpha was offered twice in 2019 at the Vancouver Campus, once at the Port Coquitlam Campus, in our Brazilian Ministry, and at Broadway Lodge. In total, over 100 attended Alpha in 2019.

BROADWAY BASICS

Dynamic Spirituality flows out of a vital relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit & You weekend seminar seeks to introduce interested people to the person and work of the Spirit. Forty participated in the seminar in April. Last fall also featured the six-week Holy Spirit University sermon series coaching listeners on how to recognize and respond to the Spirit’s activity in their lives.

THE STEP JOURNAL Reading, reflecting on, and responding to the teaching of the Bible is essential to spiritual growth. Making time to get to know, listen to, and respond to God lies at the heart of a vital spiritual life. The STEP Journal was created to help people develop a habit of engaging with God and his Word. The journal is also given to every baptismal candidate and used in our weekly pastor and staff Prayer and Care groups.

CELEBRATION SUNDAYS – BAPTISM, COMMUNION & PRAYER Baptism in water is an outward step of obedience to Christ’s command to ‘repent and be baptized’ for those new to faith and life in Christ. Thank you to all the volunteers who make this ministry work each month. Last year, 58 were baptized in water at both of our campuses. Communion and Prayer took place four times monthly on each Celebration Sunday at our Vancouver Campus with over 350 participants. Our Port Coquitlam Campus averaged 50 in attendance at Communion. Special thanks to Walter Behnke for his dedicated attention to preparing the volunteers and elements for each month.

This three-week class is designed to help newcomers learn about the mission, values, and strategy of Broadway Church. It is an important step into the life and ministry of the church and serves as a prerequisite for church membership. Broadway Basics was offered twice at both of our campuses. The course was taken by 55 people in 2019 and 52 were accepted into membership.

21

H E A LING & C ARE PASTORAL CARE We have a faithful group of individuals that serve in our pastoral care ministry which includes weekly prayer reports, altar prayer workers, visitations to hospital patients and shut-ins, and an emergency prayer chain for critical needs. Sue LePage and Bruce Waine have been pivotal in serving in the care of our elderly and infirmed through phone calls, visitation and encouraging cards. Mike Weiss leads our PrayerNet Ministry which has a whopping 240 faithful prayer warriors who intercede for our church family seven days a week! Shiela Thompson serves as the chaplain to the Broadway Lodge and she brings along Lodge residents to enjoy our bi-monthly Legacy Builders luncheons. Broadway Church is a large diverse family and we continue to seek ways to further increase our Agape care to all those who call Broadway “home.”

THE BRIDGE • A 10-week process using the Genesis Processes. 23 people registered in January thru April with 7 trained facilitators • Introduced a 5-week course in September: INSIGHTS from The Bridge - average attendance 25 • Designed for the church congregation to help those who feel spiritually stuck, this provides a way to change and heal relationships with God and other people. • 4 trained Genesis Counsellors do one-on-one counselling. • Our goal is to help Broadway become a safer environment by becoming safer people ourselves. 22

BREATH OF LIFE

CELEBRATE RECOVERY

• All year weekly program - every Tuesday • 30 volunteers • 1680 hot meals • Freedom Steps (12 steps) 63 attended - 7 groups offered in Spanish & English • Open Share Groups - 6 groups with an attendance of 20-25 (Spanish & English) • Total weekly attendance 75-85 • The Landing for teen girls had 8-12 attend weekly. • Celebration Place - Children’s Program with 12-15 attending weekly

Broadway continues to have many different entry points for people when it comes to prayer ministry. We are thankful for our altar prayer teams that pray for people at the end of each service. We also have a Breath of Life Prayer team that meets on Thursdays to pray for people who come in for prayer as well as for the needs of the church.

WO RSHIP & A RT S SINGING CHRISTMAS TREE

Much has changed since our first Singing Christmas Tree over 50 years ago. In 2019, we celebrated Christmas with the show “Illuminate”, reminding thousands of people that chose to be with us that Jesus brings peace and forgiveness to us all and that Christmas is the perfect time for us to slow down and recognize all that He has done for us. We thank the hundreds of people that help keep this tradition alive year after year. It is indeed a very special way to share the Christmas story with our community.

2019 has been a year of change for the Creative Arts Studio. Leadership passed from Lynn Gau to Kathy Lucas at the end of March. We have seen many new faces as word spreads about our drop-in. We had two community projects in 2019: scrunchies for Girl365’s Brave Boxes and warm hats for the homeless. We welcome anyone interested in learning a craft, working on their own craft or just hanging out with us to come join us. 24

WORSHIP

2019 was an amazing year for us. We’ve had some incredible people join our ministry and help lead our church in worship. We were also able to invest time in writing songs for our own congregation to sing and, as a result, we were able to release the very first Broadway Worship original song called “Changed It All”. We believe this is just the beginning. Our staff expanded in 2019 with the addition of the talented Avri Wright as a worship leader for our Vancouver Campus. The Dance Ministry continues to grow. Led by Leila Santana, this group now has over 40 people that meet every Monday night. They were one of the highlights of this year’s Singing Christmas Tree, when, for first time in many years, we had our very own ministry do all the choreography for the Tree. 2019 was a wonderful year for our ministries and we look forward to being part of what God is going to do at Broadway and in the city of Vancouver in 2020. 25

G LO BA L INIT I AT I V E S GLOBAL OUTREACH 2019 was a year where we believed for big things, and God provided. Our Short Term Missions Teams went to Mexico and Zambia this past year. We took an all-church team of 26 to Mexico in May and a families team of 11 in July, both teams partnering with Foundation for His Ministry in Baja, Mexico. A team of 7 went to Zambia in September to partner with Villages of Hope. We have just added new Global Worker partners, the McAlister’s, who are serving in Hong Kong. It is great to deepen our relationships in Asia.

B RO ADWAY’S T E N - Y E AR C H A L L E N GE LEAD PASTOR’S REPORT

Pastor Darin Latham Have you ever tried taking “The Ten-Year Challenge”? It’s rather popular on social media. You participate by placing a picture of yourself as you appear today beside a picture of yourself from ten years ago. For some people, the difference between these two pictures is barely discernable. For others, however, it’s hard to believe that the two pictures represent the same person! For some, ten years represents relative stagnancy. For others, ten years represents a lot of change. What would Broadway Church find if it took “The Ten-Year Challenge”? I think we would find that, in many ways, the Broadway Church of 2019 was very different from the Broadway Church that existed in 2009. A side-by-side comparison serves to highlight the vast transformation that has taken place in our midst over the intervening years: in our physical structures, in our ministry options and on our ministry team (to name only a few). Over those ten years, many plans were made, many prayers were prayed, many events were arranged, many lives were changed, many counted the cost, and many loved ones were lost. And throughout those incredible ten years, God has been and continues to be faithful. In this 2019 Annual Report, we celebrate – not just what God has done in our midst during this past year, but – what God has been doing in our midst over this last decade. And, while it is true that much has changed, it is also true that much has remained the same. We remain focused upon our mission, we remain guided by our core values, and we remain dedicated to our Saviour. To Him be all the glory.

PORT COQUITLAM CAMPUS VANCOUVER CAMPUS

2019 saw the completion of the exterior building refurbishment project. What a transformation and improvement to our facility! We were able to complete the building transformation with landscaping upgrades and adding quality patio furniture in our upgraded patio space. It has been a well-used space.

Through the generosity of donors, we were able to re-pave the parking lot, adding additional parking spaces AND installing some quality basketball hoops. The neighbourhood kids are thrilled to be welcomed to use our facility and this is helping us build connections with the local community.

WAREHOUSE CAMPUS

In 2019 we painted and refreshed the interior of the building as it is a bustling facility that has ministries happening seven days a week.

FOOD SERVICES MINISTRY

2019 was a year of change for our Food Services Ministry. Once again, through the generosity of donors, we were able to give this busy kitchen a “face-lift” and give it a bright fresh make-over. Shelly Steiner, our Food Services Manager, led this ministry until August. We were so very grateful to Sharlene DeBruyn and an amazing team of volunteers who stepped in and facilitated this vital ministry to the end of the year! We are blessed to have such a fantastic facility that is able to bless so many ministries.

TIMBER BISTRO

Through the generosity of donors, in 2019 we were able to expand the Timber Bistro workspace and add some additional equipment. This bistro is a “happening place” throughout the week with hundreds of Van Tech students enjoying the food, drinks and welcoming space for them. This has become a great ministry opportunity to connect with our congregants and our community.

C ULTURAL MI NI S T RI E S MEET OUR NEW CULTURAL MINISTRIES DIRECTOR

BRAZILIAN

Pastor Edgar Lapeciros It was a big privilege for me to join the pastoral staff of Broadway Church starting September 1, 2019. We were warmly welcomed at the Broadway Ministry Expo by our six Cultural Ministries. Each group is unique. They are all vibrant and have the energy to move forward. I am proud of and grateful to all our Cultural Ministry leaders who have warmly included and welcomed me to their respective groups.

MINISTRY

BRAZILIAN MINISTRY Renato Neves What a blessed 2019 we had in the Brazilian Ministry! The Brazilian Ministry hosted many outreach events in 2019 such as Pao de Queijo Night, Café com Elas (Brazilian Ladies Breakfast), Brazilian Concert featuring Pr. Andre Valadao, Festa Junina, Poncho Paks Outreach, Girls Night Out, Brazilian Thanksgiving, The Alpha Course in Portuguese and our 2nd Anniversary Celebration. We had our first camping trip to Cultus Lake with amazing unplugged worship around the campfire, a Brazilian BBQ and so much more! We offer a safe environment for Portuguese-speaking people and it is great to be able to connect them to other ministries. Most of our volunteers also serve at other events at Broadway Church. Many accepted Jesus as Saviour, 4 people got baptized and many others connected with the Brazilian Small Groups (Richmond, Downtown Vancouver, East Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster). We are working to open more Small Groups in the Tri-Cities and Fraser Valley in 2020. 32

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CLUB

Ed Wilson-Liu The International Students Club (ISC) is currently in our 15th year of ministry at Broadway Church. We continue to meet every Monday evening for a 3-hour program plus optional gym time. The program includes a full hot meal cooked by our own ISC chefs and kitchen helpers. Typically, between 50-60 are in attendance, sometimes more on those special celebration nights like Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas dinners and programs. With international students coming and going all the time into Vancouver on their short-term study or work stays, ISC is a very transitional ministry in the sense of a continuous flow of new people and even returning students. The ISC Bible Study, which has been in operation for over 2 years now, had a very productive and blessed autumn session. In our last in-house session in December we had 18 show up, our largest number since its inception. It’s great to see many non-believers at both ISC and Bible Study curious about the Christian faith and interested in learning about God and the Bible.

TRANSLATION MINISTRY

Victor Kung On any given Sunday, over 40 people take advantage of our Translation Ministry during the 10:30 am service. Simultaneous translation was offered in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Portuguese in 2019. In addition, sermon notes were translated into Chinese & Spanish.

FILIPINO MINISTRY

Carl Rasing In 2019 the Filipino Ministry met every Sunday for lunch, fellowship, and Bible Study. Monthly Celebration Sundays are held to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and answered prayers. In April, the Filipino Ministry celebrated its 27th anniversary. During the summer, we held our gatherings at parks for picnics, outdoor games and sports. Saturday Prayer Meetings and Monthly Leaders Meetings are on-going. The leadership team is committed to help welcome and integrate many new families from the Philippines to Canada through fellowship in the Filipino Ministry.

CHINESE MINISTRY

Pastor Corinna Ho The Chinese Ministry continues to strive for evangelism and discipleship among our Chinese-speaking congregants. It is through Bible study, support groups, outreach services, Encounter Nights, and pastoral care that we encourage people’s spiritual growth. In addition, a new outreach ministry was launched at the PoCo Campus in March 2019.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES

SPANISH MINISTRY

Vincent & Samai Carrillo The Spanish Fellowship met every first and third Sunday in 2019 averaging 35-40 participants. International Latin American students continue to find a home away from home with our Spanish community. Four members of the fellowship were baptized in 2019. Several of the women from the group attended the Women’s Retreat.

Two serving teams are reaching out to the Chinese communities of Vancouver and Port Coquitlam. (1) Strathcona Outreach Ministry (SOM) ~ meets twice a month to evangelize non-believers and to disciple believers, through music and songs, English/Bible study, small groups, and refreshments. Average attendance comes close to 40 persons per meeting. A love meal was also held, which over 120 guests attended, and 6 persons accepted Christ. (2) PoCo Outreach Ministry (POM) ~ Since its launch in April 2019, meetings have been running twice a month at the PoCo Campus to reach out to the Tri-Cities. The program consists of light breakfast, songs, and different study groups. Both teams maintain a high spirit of moving people towords entering enter into God’s kingdom. 33

CityReach Bees

One of our themes this year has been, “We are in the hope business”. Giving people hope is a big deal to us. Hope for today and hope for tomorrow. Introducing people to the God of all hope is our greatest joy!

In an effort to partner with the City of Vancouver and to be a good neighbour, we are launching our very own apiary! Two beehives are going up on our roof in the spring of 2020. If you’re interested in learning more about why we keep bees, or our Theology of Bee Keeping (Beeology), or if you want to get involved, please contact cherylm@cityreach.org.

2019 has been an amazing year of unprecedented growth. Our community support programs and events are reaching a wide demographic of economically underprivileged families in our neighbourhood. I’m so honored to lead an incredible and hardworking staff to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Thank you to all the donors and volunteers that make CityReach possible. Without your ongoing support we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. Thank you!!

NEW STAFF IN 2019 Meet Jemal Jemal Damtawe is our new program director for Club Freedom. He loves Jesus and it shows. He comes to us with a wealth of experience in ministry and addiction recovery. His joy comes from seeing people break the chains of their addictions, going from where they are now to a life no longer controlled by darkness. Meet Lydia Lydia Park has joined the CityReach team as our Donor Relations Specialist. She works with volunteers and donors and leads our fundraising department. Her attention to detail and her excellent administrative skills have served us so well. Lydia is very involved in Broadway’s Brazilian Ministry and Broadway’s Dance Ministry. 34

DREAMS FOR 2020

A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

CityReach Rebrand A logo and branding can communicate a lot about an organization. CityReach just turned 15 years old in 2019 and it’s time for a new look. Coming February 2020, CityReach will have a new logo. Same great organization. Same mission and vision. Same name. Just a new look and feel.

C I TYREACH - P RO G RAM S COMMUNITY CLOSET CLUB FREEDOM Each Sunday in Vancouver and each Tuesday in Port Coquitlam, we gather together as a community to support each other, worship our God in song, have a scripture lesson, and then enjoy a delicious meal. We served 150 meals each Sunday, and about 50 each Tuesday. In 2019 we served approximately 10,000 meals in total! We also had our first Christmas Eve meal in Port Coquitlam attended by 80 guests, who each received a Christmas gift as well. After the meal, we connect with the guests and see what individual needs they may have. Some need help in the form of prayer and others need actual hands-on help. Help comes in the form of helping a person find shelter, driving them to a recovery house or detox, or giving them information about housing. We also do Christian counselling and Bible studies. At the Warehouse, Bible study is held each Sunday at 10:30 for one hour. Our guests include people that are homeless, people with addictions and people who just love the environment of feeling loved and supported.

The Community Closet used clothing sale continues to meet a vital need for families in the Lower Mainland in our two locations—at our Warehouse facility in Vancouver and also the TriCities. We collected about 6 tonnes of clothing in 2019 and provided about 1200 bags of quality clothing items! Our team was also able to bring the clothing sale to other community events— “Bring on Summer” carnival at a Port Coquitlam elementary school, and Back to School Blast in Vancouver and Tri-Cities. Because of the generous clothing donations we receive, we are able to respond to other needs as they arise. Sometimes we are made aware of a family in crisis that has an urgent need—and we are able to provide for that. In addition, the Community Closet provides free clothing to the Club Freedom group, so that those who are homeless or in need can have warm coats, sweaters, hats, and socks.

PRAYER WALK This year Club Freedom began a Prayer Walk Ministry! Prayer Walk Ministry is a group that prepares food and some basic necessities like hygiene items and goes down to the Downtown Eastside. Once a month on the last Sunday of the month, we go and pray and reach out as friends to this part of the city. We have seen the overwhelming need for this ministry as each time we head out we pray for at least 30 people. People are thankful also for the food that we hand out and whatever basic things we have that day to make living on the streets a little easier. We also let them know about Club Freedom and encourage them to attend. The response of people wanting to volunteer and pray has been overwhelming and great to see people wanting to serve. A man that we prayed for on a Prayer Walk attended Club Freedom, and he is now in a drug and alcohol program. This is encouraging to our ministry as it shows that we are reaching people and helping them prosper in life. 35

C ITYREACH - P RO G RAM S

OUT OF SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM GIRL365 We have grown in many avenues in 2019 and more is to come! We continue to reach out to thousands of young women across Canada and beyond with our message of hope, true worth and God’s relentless love. In 2019, our website has had 32,000 visits, our guests having access to all of our content for free. Articles, Q&A, podcast information, devotionals, requests for our ‘Brave Heart Boxes’, and our GIRL365 merchandise is all available. We also have an active Instagram account where our target audience of teens to young adult women are impacted by our faith-based content every day. In 2019, over 75 of our “Brave Heart” care boxes were given to at-risk girls. Plus, new this past year was our GIRL365 Podcast! We aim to mentor young girls to honour God in their life choices, addressing topics from dating, to health and wellness, to navigating the online world. This year, we attended and participated in 8 women’s/youth conferences across the Lower Mainland, including History Maker, Spark and Arise Conference to be able to share our message and resources with hundreds of girls. We also hosted an event at CityReach in partnership with ‘Girl Talk’ from Toronto, called “She Rises”, which addressed specifically the topics of bullying, mental health and resilience. At the end of 2019, Cheryl McManus stepped down as Director of GIRL365 and Jillian Kokai-Kuun has accepted the role as Director. Cheryl will continue to contribute as a team member to this ministry. Thank you for your continued support. We long to honour our wonderful Saviour in all we do.

36

It was a very busy year for our Out of School Care Program. We are running at full-capacity, 35 kids. We had nearly 70 children enrolled in our summer week-long camps. We did dance, Latin drumming lessons, African drumming lessons, laser tag, arts and crafts, team relays and competitions, soccer, water balloons, water blasters, swimming, 4-square, many birthday party puzzle challenges, baking, science experiments, Lego challenges, escape room, scavenger hunts, snow days, Lego week, secret agent week, safari week, galactic universe week, and much much more!

FOOD FOR FAMILIES MOBILE The mobile version of our food bank also continued to expand in 2019. In the Tri-Cities, we bring our refrigerated truck to 3 schools every month as well as to the CityReach Tri-Cities location. We also brought food hampers to Chief Maquinna Elementary in Vancouver. Our mobile program features the same healthy, fresh foods served at our main Vancouver location. Between our mobile locations, we were able to serve up to 75 low-income families in the public schools. In the coming year, we will also bring our truck to low-income housing areas and to other schools on a “pop-up basis in order to raise awareness of our programs and serve more people. Overall, we plan to serve up to 100 families each month that might not be able to access traditional food banks due to transportation and scheduling issues.

FOOD FOR FAMILIES Our Food for Families program continued to expand. We continued to serve over 200 families representing more than 800 individuals. Thanks to our partners we are now receiving regular meat donations. With the increased amount of donations, we were able to provide bigger and better hampers for Food for Families Mobile as well. It is an honor to be able to bless the families in our community in such a tangible way!

ADOPT A SCHOOL This year we kicked off our Adopt a School initiative in Vancouver. We have been working with Chief Maquinna and Thunderbird Elementary Schools and Van Tech Secondary to build relationships with the teachers, social workers and families right in our neighbourhood. These schools are known to be under-funded and have high populations of families living below the poverty line. We have been gaining trust and favour with the school administrations, as well as being able to extend special invitations for their families to participate and receive support through our Back to School Blast, Boxes of Love and other events. We have also provided for some immediate needs that the schools have sent to us, including helping to fund a wheelchair for a student in need at Maquinna. We are excited to see these relationships grow as we expand this program in 2020! 37

EASTER BASH

COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR Coldest Night of the Year is our annual fundraiser walk-a-thon for CityReach, where we join in over 100 other locations across Canada to raise funds for the hungry, hurting and homeless. This past year, we DOUBLED our previous year’s goal, and made it our target to raise $100,000 to expand our community programs and events in order to reach more individuals and families in 2019. We were amazed by all of those who joined in and supported this cause, and we were able to surpass this goal! We had over 25 teams, 275 walkers, and 60 volunteers join us for the event, which included a post-walk meal and celebrations for all ages. Over 850 people donated to the cause, and the amazing thing is that these vital funds became seeds of impact, directly impacting thousands of individuals and families in our city over the year. Thank you again to all of those who donated, volunteered and walked to make it happen!

Easter Bash is our annual Easter community event, where we welcome in hundreds of guests to join us to celebrate! We are honoured to have the opportunity to invite families in to experience a funfilled free event, but also to be able to share the hope that we have in Jesus. Every year gets bigger and better, and in 2019 we were able to host pony rides, bouncy castles, carnival games, crafts, free cotton candy, a dynamic presentation, photos with our local heroes from the Vancouver Fire Department … and our famous Easter egg hunt for 20,000 Easter eggs! Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this day possible, bringing smiles to hundreds of children’s faces.

FAMILY MOVIE MATINEE Twice per year we host free Family Movie Matinees, where the community is invited to watch a fun, new release film on the big screen! We host these events at Broadway Church both in Port Coquitlam and Vancouver, to allow for over 300 guests per event. Children can enjoy free popcorn and candy, and even dress up if they like. It is a great opportunity to open our doors, meet new friends and connect with our neighbours.

BRING ON SUMMER At Birchland Elementary, one of our “Adopted Schools” in the Tri-Cities, CityReach partnered with the school to hold a free community carnival for the second year. About 200 people participated in the inflatables, games, food, cotton candy and prizes. The Community Closet also made kids’ clothing available for $2 per bag. 38

CHRISTMAS FUNTASTIC

BACK TO SCHOOL BLAST Our 2nd annual Back to School Blast was an amazing day at both of our campuses! Thanks to volunteers and donors like you, we were able to help families get ready for back to school with all of the essentials, and a whole lot of fun. We were able to provide 700 backpacks filled with school supplies, 150 haircuts for kids, 100 manicures for moms, 200 professional portraits, 1300 barbecued hotdogs and snacks - all for FREE! Children also had tons of fun on our giant bouncy castles, Jr Kids play area, with free face paint and cotton candy. Plus, parents could also shop our thrift sale for gently used clothing for only $3 per bag. In Vancouver, we also hosted community partners: Vancouver Public Library, Eye See Eye Learn program, Starbucks Coffee, Trev Deeley Motorcycles and Bikers Against Bullying. We can’t wait for next year!

This year we celebrated our 7th Annual Family Christmas Funtastic, with over 600 parents and children joining us for a fun-tastic celebration! Many of these are families from the community who had never been to an event at Broadway Church before. It was a TON of fun with gingerbread decorating, Christmas crafts, Santa photos, face paint, and a light-up holiday Train Ride! We love that we get to open our doors to the community to provide a fun and free space for families to enjoy the season and get to experience who we are at Broadway Church and CityReach. Thank you to all of those who made this such a memorable event again this past year, and to all of our volunteers who served with joy to make the day extra special for so many amazing children.

BOXES OF LOVE Boxes of Love 2019 was incredible, thanks to all of those who donated generously and gave their time to serve at the event. We are both thrilled and honoured to share that we surpassed our financial goal this year of raising $60,000 to support 450 families in Vancouver and the Tri-Cities. At the event, we had hundreds of individuals of all ages, including families with young children, corporate groups and city officials, join us to pack 450 food hampers and wrap 1000 toys for families in need in Vancouver and the Tri-Cities. In the afternoon, as families came to pick up their items, we could see the children’s faces light up as they were given free stuffed animals, treats, wrapped presents and were able to join in festive activities including our family photo booth, visits with Santa and princesses, bouncy castles and more. It was certainly a day to remember, blessing the community and sharing the joy of the season.

U M B REL L A MI NI S T RI E S BROADWAY LODGE

BROADWAY MANOR As an affiliate ministry of Broadway Church, Broadway Pentecostal Benevolent Association operates Broadway Manor, a nine-story, 80unit high-rise facility for adults of low income. Currently about 45% of the tenants either attend or have direct links to the Church. Operating since 1975, the facility has had considerable upgrading to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for its tenants. In the past year, tenants have taken the initiative to cultivate a greater sense of community life with planned events in the adjacent solarium facility. Rental rates continue to be well below market value for similar accommodation in this part of Vancouver. The Society receives additional revenue from cell tower leases on the roof of the Manor facility allowing the Society to make periodic charitable donations to the Church.

42

2019 has proven to be an exciting year at our 114 bed complex care home on False Creek. Seniors with various cognitive and physical abilities benefit from consistency and continuity; this is what the staff and volunteers at the Broadway Lodge endeavor to bring to the residents. It is all about Agape love, dignity and respect. Yes, “Excellence in Care” is the Lodge motto. While there are many residents who are at risk of isolation, it is exciting to see volunteers stepping up to regularly visit and make a difference, but we can always use more. With a calendar full of activities, there is something for everyone who has the desire to meet a “new friend” at the Lodge. We have faithbased opportunities which include a Wednesday evening chapel service, a Sunday morning church service, a Thursday morning Bible Study, as well as 1-1 visitation and walks or an outing with the famous duet bike. There are also opportunities to be companions for outings such as shopping, luncheons, and there are many other events that occur “on site” which require volunteers. Our current needs are during the daytime, weekdays. We are pleased to say that, except for some Sunday services, our general volunteer positions are full on weekends! Thank you to all the volunteers who have in the past, are currently, or will in the future bless the seniors at the Lodge. Thanks, also to many of the Broadway Church staff who come and minister to our residents in various ways. If you would like to volunteer or have a tour of our home, please contact Chaplain Shiela.

SHILOH HOUSING SOCIETY

Shiloh Housing Society and Broadway Church are finally realizing and implementing the vision of Rev. Bernice Gerard and Pastor Allon Hornby when Broadway Church agreed to take Shiloh Housing Society under its ministry umbrella. Shiloh Housing Society has been able to provide affordable subsidized housing to low-income families, seniors, and single adults through contacts made through Broadway Church. Shiloh’s two housing complexes are the Redwoods in Richmond where there are 38 townhouse units, and Shiloh Place in the Downtown East-Side where there are 42 one-bedroom apartments. It is a privilege to be able to respond to the critical housing shortage in our city and offer a safe, clean environment to our residents.
