23-year-old Rose-Lynn’s dream is to be a Nashville country singer. Though as a Glaswegian single mother fresh out of prison, that dream is quite a distance away. She starts working as a housekeeper for the very posh Susannah who, upon hearing Rose-Lynn’s singing decides to help her get to Nashville. But as much as Rose-Lynn’s mother wants to support her, she also wants her daughter to take responsibility for her actions. A delightful comedy-drama, exploring the challenges of being a mother.

Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut with this coming-of-age story about a teenage boy who finds his scene when he meets an eclectic group of neighbourhood skateboarders. Mid90s is goofy, intelligent, and tender - and it might have you eyeing that skateboard collecting dust in the garage. TIFF

In 1984, after a decade of trying, and failing, to make it in the record business, Chris Sievey created himself a papier-maché-headed pop-star alter ego named Frank Sidebottom. Soon, Frank gained an army of fans, played concerts around the country, and even had his own TV show, but underneath the mask, Chris Sievey had become a prisoner of his own success. Using footage from Sievey’s archives, as well as interviews with fans and loved ones, Steve Sullivan paints the portrait of a troubled artist whose story truly was stranger than fiction.

Starring: Victor Polster, Arieh Worthalter

Socially anxious and awkward 13-year-old Kayla is trying to make it through the last week of middle school. Unable to socialise, she shares her daily struggles online through vlogs aimed at her peers. But her audience is scarce and Kayla hasn’t been able to live by the advice she dispenses online. As the end of school approaches, Kayla is determined to connect in real life and bridge the gap between how she sees herself and who she believes she should be.

Alex and his band of droogs like to kill, rape and listen to Beethoven – revelling in ultraviolence and narcotic cocktails. When Alex is arrested after a vicious murder, he becomes a guinea pig in a brutal experiment designed to purge him from his violent impulses. Initially criticised for its extreme violence, A Clockwork Orange, is now regarded as one of the best dystopian films of all time.

In a world of broken families, cassette tapes and rumbling political fever, these friends, each with their own struggles to bear, share a moment of harmony as they witness the carp for themselves. FRI 19, FROM 8PM On the opening night of Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story, we’ll be spinning ‘80s and ‘90s Manchester music in the Cafébar from 8PM.

Adapted from Jennie Rooney’s bestselling novel and loosely inspired by the life of British KGB agent Melita Norwood, Red Joan follows Joan Stanley, a seemingly demure retired scientist living in London who, in 2000, is arrested for providing intelligence to Russia during the Cold War. Through flashbacks, we revisit Joan’s story as a physics student falling in love with a young socialist, and who gradually becomes more and more politicised.

In an isolated rural estate, young Lazzaro is working with other unpaid workers at a tobacco farm. His innocence and kindness often mistaken for simple-mindedness, Lazzaro is both adored and taken advantage of. When Tancredi, a young self-absorbed aristocrat visits the farm, he senses an opportunity and embroils Lazzaro in a daring plan to deceive his mother.

JELLYFISH

At the height of the Gold Rush, Eli and Charlie Sisters are guns for hire – brutally navigating their way through the Wild West, and most recently hired by the Commodore to find chemist Hermann Warm, extract his formula for a liquid that reveals gold and, of course, kill him. But, with a number of obstacles standing in their way, and their brotherly bond at a crossroad, the Sisters men are in for a rollercoaster journey. Jacques Audiard directs a flawless cast in this witty, tender and yet authentic western.
