Starring: Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri
Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling team up in this mesmerising adaptation of Julian Barnes’s novel about ageing, memory, jealousy, and the lies we tell ourselves to survive. The film follows Tony, a semi-retired and divorced curmudgeon, skilled at subjectively ordering his own history. But the possibility of an alternate reality arises when the diary of his best friend is bequeathed to him after his mysterious suicide.
When the infamous director of Oldboy helms an erotic period thriller, all bets are off. In Japan-colonised Korea, two thieves pose as a handmaiden and a count to swindle a Japanese heiress out of her fortune and dump her in the madhouse. But nothing proves simple once the maid and the heiress fall madly in lust. Shocking twists and feverish pacing ensure there’s never a dull moment in this lavish bodice-ripper inspired by the novel ‘Fingersmith’ by Sarah Waters. Chicago Film Festival
Films about how movies get made form a fascinating genre unto themselves. To classics like Singin’ in the Rain and The Bad and the Beautiful add the delightful comedy Their Finest, the story of the British film industry during the war, charged with buoying the spirits of people living in fear of the Blitz. There are standout performances from Gemma Arterton as a fledgling scriptwriter, and Bill Nighy as a past-his-prime, but still pompous actor, who latches onto the young scenarist.
Thanks to their sweary rants about modern England, Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods have been called “the angriest band in Britain”. Bunch of Kunst tells the story of three guys taking on the music business on their own terms.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Dir: Terence Davies UK 2016 125m
Dir: Raoul Peck US 2016 93m
(PG) 129m
Starring: Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle
When James Baldwin died in 1987, he left behind 30 pages of a book that was to be a personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his friends – Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Using Baldwin’s words only, Raoul Peck envisions the book the author never finished, to deliver a radical study of race in America – connecting the evolution of the Civil Rights movement to the current immediacy of #BlackLivesMatter
Acclaimed director Terence Davies returns with a luminous and deeply moving biopic of poet Emily Dickinson, played with virtuosity by Cynthia Nixon. A recluse who eventually boarded herself up in her bedroom, A Quiet Passion details many facets of her character: her wit, melancholy, and her poetry’s transcendent ability to connect with other people in ways she could not.
