French director Xavier Legrand’s debut feature is an explosive family story, as gripping as it is authentic. Miriam is pushing for sole custody of their son, an unwilling witness to his father’s past abuses. Yet Antoine wins joint custody, setting in motion a chain of events that is almost unbearably tense. Carefully and sensitively directed with intense, restrained performances throughout, this is a powerful, human scale reminder of how domestic violence simmers. Borderlines Film Festival

Impulsive and adventurous Moll is keen to break free from her controlling relatives and the isolated community that surrounds her on the island of Jersey. When she meets the mysterious Pascal, she quickly decides to move in with him, but when Pascal is suspected of a series of brutal murders, Moll must decide how far she will go to defend him.

Starring: Nakhane Touré, Bongile Mantsai

At the height of the AIDS crisis in the early 90s, the Parisian branch of activist group ACT UP begins to multiply their actions to fight the general indifference. More and more young men join the cause, including introspective Nathan who soon finds himself falling for outspoken militant Sean. Drawing on his own experience, Campillo chronicles the inspiring yet heartbreaking reality of activism: the meetings and rallies, the passion and frustration, the comradeship and devastating loss.

Maxine Peake gives a formidable performance as an aspiring female comedian standing up to a violent husband and the sexist Northern England club circuit in the 70s and 80s. More of a film about the power of laughter and how to transform pain into humour than a straight-up comedy, Funny Cow is a fitting showcase for Peake. So often dazzling on stage and television, she’s hilarious and heartbreaking here. BFI London Film Festival

“Robin Campillo’s outstanding AIDS activist drama melds the personal, the political and the erotic to heart-bursting effect.” Variety

Starring: Lily James, Jessica Brown Findlay

A writer forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island in the aftermath of World War II when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war in this anticipated adaptation of the 2008 novel of the same name.

MON 23, 8.15PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.

THU 26, 6.30PM INTRODUCTION Author, journalist and film expert, Graham Caveney will introduce this screening.

Juliette Binoche is luminous in this off-kilter comedy about a divorced artist navigating the turmoil of dating in mid-life from lauded filmmaker Denis (Beau Travail). Featuring an ensemble of stellar French actors, the film offers a refreshingly feminist take on love and sex as Binoche’s often exasperating Isabelle cycles through all manner of suitors in her quest to find Mr. Right. Chicago Film Festival

“Funny Cow is powered by a crackling anger and a forceful performance from Maxine Peake.” Screen International

“The film slowly but surely works its charms, painting a rich, emotionally complex portrait of a woman who, like Denis herself, will not let herself be boxed in.” The Hollywood Reporter

Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the men of his community at a camp in the mountains of South Africa’s Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood with an annual Xhosa ritual. When a defiant young initiate from the city casts suspicion on Xolani’s sexuality, his entire existence begins to unravel. A dark, stirring and visually breathtaking variation on the coming-of age narrative.

“Jessie Buckley is a force of nature in the lead role of this sinewy psychological thriller.” Screen International

British film icon Michael Caine narrates and stars in this vivid and inspiring story of his personal journey through 1960s London.
