FINDING NEMO (3D) (U) 104m
Pilot Whip Whitacker, after an all-nighter of booze, sex and drugs, boldly guides a crippled airliner to a crash landing. Although he is acclaimed as a hero, the legal, moral and ethical aspects of Whip’s behaviour before and after the accident are much more ambiguous than initially meet the public eye. A study of addiction far more complex than the norm, Flight is a compelling drama anchored by a great performance from Denzel Washington.
An entertaining environmental activist film about the dangers of drilling for natural gas, aka fracking. Matt Damon and Frances McDormand play a duo of energy company executives out to convince down-on-their-luck farmers in a rural Midwestern town to sell their land to the corporation, glibly promising them instant wealth. When they encounter opposition from a retired science professor and from a personable environmentalist, who launches a fervent campaign to thwart them, Damon’s character begins to have second thoughts. Gus Van Sant directs from a script by Damon and Krasinski from a story by Dave Eggers.
Starring: Steve Coogan, Stephen Fry, Anna Friel
Yaron Zilberman’s civilised delight provides Christopher Walken with one of his best roles in recent years as Peter, the founding member of a successful string quartet. As the quartet prepare to celebrate their silver anniversary with a recital of Beethoven’s Late String Quartets, Peter is diagnosed with a degenerative illness. It is a moment when everything he has worked for starts to fall apart, including the marriage of second violinist Robert and violist Juliette. Restoring the delicate harmony of the group is the basis of this wise, beautifully acted drama with a wonderful classical soundtrack.
George Lucas, James Cameron, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese discuss the advantages of digital cinematography over traditional film in this documentary examining all aspects of filmmaking, from capture to edit, visual effects to colour correction and distribution to archive. At this moment when digital and photochemical filmmaking coexist, Side By Side explores what has been gained, what is lost, and what the future might bring.
Starring: Frances McDormand, Matt Damon

A staggering, eye-opening account of an ongoing whodunit, and one of the grossest miscarriages of justice in recent US history. In 1993, three young boys were found mutilated in Arkansas. Authorities swiftly pinned the crime on a trio of teenage boys, dubbed the ‘West Memphis Three’; two were put away for life, the other sentenced to death. Then signs emerged that cast doubt on the convictions and after 17 years behind bars, the trio were released. West of Memphis presents a fascinating account of this astounding case and uncovers damning new evidence that points towards a killer who still walks free.

Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Reunited after their unforgettable collaboration on Blue Valentine, Ryan Gosling and writer/director Derek Cianfrance have created a supremely stylish crime drama that matures into a rich, complex tale of family, fate, guilt and the unbearable demands of modern masculinity. Gosling is a motorcycle stunt rider and happy to drift from town to town, free of commitments or restrictions. When he discovers that he has a baby son, he takes the responsibility seriously. Robbing banks is his means of family support but that soon puts him at odds with an ambitious cop with an idealistic belief in justice. Both men must address the sins of the past in a powerful American epic.

Tired of shrill, soulless Hollywood romantic comedies? Susanne Bier’s delightful Love is All You Need could restore your faith in the entire genre. Recovering from chemotherapy, Trine Dyrholm’s Ida discovers her boorish husband’s infidelity in the worst possible way. She leaves alone for their daughter’s dream wedding at a beautiful Italian villa in Sorrento. When soon to be ex-hubby joins the wedding party with his new conquest, the family’s ugly squabbles leave straitlaced widower Philip (Pierce Brosnan) wondering if his son has made the right choice. A sparkling, sun-kissed romantic charmer that will prove irresistible to anyone who believes that love can conquer all obstacles.
MON 15, 7.45PM INTRODUCTION This screening will include a 15-minute introduction starting at 7.45PM by the Nottingham Law School of Nottingham Trent University about the Innocence Project, which investigates potential miscarriages of justice in the UK.

CAESAR MUST DIE
IN THE HOUSE (15) 116m
A group of long term prisoners, incarcerated in a maximum security prison on the outskirts of Rome, are successively cast and rehearsed and then give a public performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. A vital, edgy film from renowned filmmaking duo the Taviani brothers, this is a sort of film-within-a-film, of a play; brilliantly blending documentary and drama by using a real prison and genuine inmates. Already highly acclaimed, Caesar Must Die won the top prize of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. London Film Festival
Welcome to the scandalous world of Paul Raymond, entrepreneur, impresario, and the “king of Soho.” Seeing mediocrity in the smutty sex parlours of London, Raymond unveils his first “gentlemen’s club” in 1958 and gradually builds an empire of clubs and erotic magazines that brings him vast wealth while affronting British sexual mores. It also brings a litany of obscenity charges, a failed marriage, troubled children, and personal tragedy. After struggling for years to bring Raymond’s story to the screen, Steve Coogan delivers a remarkable performance, fully inhabiting this complicated and contradictory man who seems almost tragic.
