Kaboom is a wild, witty, sex-drenched horror-comedy thriller, the latest film from iconoclastic filmmaker Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Nowhere, Mysterious Skin). Smith, an 18-year-old student, lusts after his straight roommate, hangs out with his lesbian bestie, and tries to decide whether he prefers boys or girls. Teen angst soon gives way to more sinister concerns when Smith finds out that his small Southern California town is also home to a killer cult.

This superbly paced, gritty and intelligent tale is set in 2019’s postapocalyptic Neo-Tokyo where the mysterious military-scientific government’s secret weapons, telekinetic humans, battle the cyberpunk resistance and threaten to destroy the world. With an unheard of billion yen production budget Akira set the technical benchmark on it’s original release and from this brand new HD digital print the definitive masterpiece is a must see on the big screen.

This year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film is a fine example of Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier’s talent for weaving together accessible domestic melodrama and issues of ethical awareness of the world beyond our doorstep. A doctor who devotes himself to practicing medicine in an African refugee camp, returns home to Denmark to find that his son has fallen under the sway of a school friend mourning the death of his mother by acting out his own darker impulses. Bier’s inviting film asks but doesn’t answer: Is the male urge for violence innate? Is it passed from father to son? And if it is, how can we teach our children well? Entertainment Weekly

Based upon the award-winning novel by Yoshida Shuichi, who also co-scripted, the film is a dark examination of modern Japanese society that charts the many aftershocks that follow a brutal and tragic crime. The film has a fine cast, headed by Tsumabuki Satoshi and Fukatsu Eri (who won the Best Actress award at the 2010 Montreal World Film Festival for her stunning performance).

The story begins with a beautiful woman apparently imprisoned in the lavish home of master plastic-surgeon Antonio Banderas, who has invented a way to create superhuman skin. From there... well, things just get darker, weirder and wittier. And when you’re sure that a jewel-thief dressed as a tiger is the oddest thing you’re going to see, Almodóvar yanks a wicked central plot-pivot and corkscrews his tale of madness and passion to new levels. Mystery melodrama, revenge thriller, body horror, loopy black comedy: The Skin I Live In sutures everything together for a genre-bender, a genderbender and the most enjoyable film we’ve seen at the Cannes festival so far.

Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a salty village cop in Ireland, has a subversive sense of humour, a caustic wit, and an uncanny knack for keeping people at arm’s length. When a straitlaced FBI agent chasing an international drugsmuggling ring hits town, Boyle has no intention of letting the arrival disrupt his routine of hookers and wisecracks. Initially, he relishes offending and ridiculing the agent, but a murder and a series of peculiar events draw the reluctant sergeant into the investigation. A clever, fresh character study, as well as a snappy joyride of an action comedy. Sundance Film Festival

Starring: Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm

Starring: Satoshi Tsumabuki, Eri Fukatsu

Antonio Banderas

Lovefilm.com

15th July 1988. Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year which follows? Based on David Nicholls’ (Starter for Ten) bestselling book, One Day is a funny/sad love story spanning twenty years about growing up - how we change and how we stay the same.

Starring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Melusine Mayance, Niels Arestrup

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a 10-year-old girl is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door-to-door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, she locks him in a cupboard, promising to return. Sixtyseven years later: Sarah’s story intertwines with that of Julia, an American journalist investigating the round-up.

Antonio Banderas

Starring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Melusine Mayance, Niels Arestrup

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a 10-year-old girl is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door-to-door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Sixtyseven years later: Sarah’s story intertwines with that of Julia, an American journalist investigating the round-up.

Starring: Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm

Starring: Satoshi Tsumabuki, Eri Fukatsu

Antonio Banderas

One of Bergman’s finest, an early, expressionistic masterpiece. When an almost bankrupt circus rolls into the town in which his estranged wife and sons live, Albert, its ringmaster and owner, must choose between the quiet life and life on the road with his young mistress.

The three leads shared best actress at Cannes for their portrayal of three mothers in a maternity ward. In the course of a few days, each woman reveals to the others their life stories and intimate thoughts. And each wrestles with the decision whether or not to keep their babies or give them up for adoption.

We are pleased to welcome Producer Lauren Simpson who will introduce the film & attend a Q&A session afterwards.

An oil company vs ordinary people…the tag line for Risteard O Domhnaill’s engrossing and provocative documentary couldn’t be more pertinent - except that this time the oil company is Shell, and the people are represented by the good folk of Rossport in Ireland. Delightfully shot and stirring in message, the story begins in 2005 when a group of locals - to become known as the Rossport Five, who later served time in jail decline to let Shell lay pipeline across their land, and find themselves in a tussle not only with the petroleum giant but also with local police, the Garda.

This beautiful meditation on culture, roots and identity interweaves two journeys. In the first, uptight Rhys drags his girlfriend off to Patagonia so he can photograph disused chapels. Meanwhile Patagonian Grannie Cerys fools her grandson Alejandro into accompanying her to Wales to find the farmhouse her mum was forced to leave when pregnant with Cerys. The meandering journeys are enlivened by Evans’ fine eye for both landscapes, and his intelligent reflections on contemporary Wales and its place in the world.

This was Bergman’s third film and it was the first to be released in the United States. It’s a ripe dockside melodrama about an abusive sailer, his son and a chorus girl. Composed of beautifully lit and symbolically rich scenes, it has some dazzling moments to be awed by.

The second feature from Ingmar Bergman is more than just a curiosity from his back-catalogue. The earliest signs of a filmmaker able to draw his audience to the plight of highly empathetic characters are on display, in this case two down-on-their-luck outsiders who meet at a train station. Both Maggi and David have chequered pasts, but they have vowed to leave the past behind and embrace a fresh beginning. Will their love be strong enough to overcome circumstance and human intervention?

A SHIP BOUND FOR INDIA (15) SKEPP TILL INDIA LAND

A SHIP BOUND FOR INDIA (15) SKEPP TILL INDIA LAND
