This Chilean hit combines family drama with a metaphorical analysis of Latin American society. Raquel has been one Santiago family’s maid for 20 years, enjoying and suffering all the intimacies and antagonisms her role brings. Another chance to catch this boisterous and witty summer hit. Our hero is an over-the-hill magician, complete with less-than-friendly white rabbit and their adventures are based upon an unrealized script by Jacques Tati.
After the enormous success of Paris, Je T’aime it was only a matter of time before the whole process was repeated in another iconic city. New York, I Love You invites eleven filmmakers to offer their vision of the Big Apple and the diverse crosssection of individuals seeking to find romance and relationships within its warm embrace. Highlights include Julie Christie as a melancholy retired opera singer, Eli Wallach and Cloris Leachman as a bickering elderly couple, Natalie Portman’s tender tale of a divorced couple and the children trapped by their bitterness and Albert Hughes’ memorable evocation of a passionate one night stand. Brilliantly directed by David Fincher from a razor-sharp script by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network is a scintillating look at the meteoric rise and acrimonious fall of the founders of Facebook - Harvard undergrads who developed their zeitgeist-altering phenomenon out of their dorm rooms…and ended up suing each other for millions. Jesse Eisenberg turns in a mesmerizing performance as the genius but socially maladroit CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose flash of social-networking inspiration occurs during a drunken act of internet revenge on an ex-girlfriend. Much more than a ripped-from-the-headlines docudrama, The Social Network is a timeless study of unchecked ambition, status and privilege in America, and those other, more precious things money can’t buy. BRINGING UP BABY!
Julianne Moore
For live-in lesbian couple Jules and Nic, life with their two teenage children in suburban LA is quiet and a little too comfortable. But when the kids go behind their back and track down the sperm donor who made it all possible, things start to get complicated. Filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko mixes family drama and comedy to paint an orthodox picture of an unorthodox family. Features standout performances from Moore and Bening, along with Mark Ruffalo as the hippy man-child Paul, who makes a better sperm donor than he does a father.

In 1968, women machinists at Ford’s Dagenham plant downed tools in protest against sexual discrimination. With humour, common sense and courage, they took on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community and finally the government itself. Led by Sally Hawkins, the wonderful cast brings an historic moment to life with much humour and great heart.

MARY AND MAX (CERT TBC) A dark but lovable tale of friendship against the odds. Australian schoolgirl Mary inadvertently becomes penpal to Max, a middle-aged, obese New Yorker with a unique mindset. Mismatched as they are, their connection endures... A work of stop-motion genius: witty, moving and utterly idiosyncratic.

When a prodigal son who has given up a potential career as a classical pianist to work in the oil fields comes home to see his father for the last time, he must confront the rich, sophisticated life he has left behind. Rhys Ifans gives the performance of a lifetime in this wild biopic of the infamous Howard Marks. An Oxford physics graduate from the Welsh Valleys who became a drug-runner, dope aficionado, celebrated author and sometime spy, Marks here becomes the engaging antihero of a rollicking cinematic ride, based on his own hit autobiography. There’s a revolution underway in South America, but most of the world doesn’t know it. Oliver Stone sets out on a road trip across five countries to explore the social and political movements as well as the mainstream media’s misperception of South America while interviewing seven of its elected presidents. In casual conversations with Presidents Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Lula da Silva (Brazil), Cristina Kirchner (Argentina), Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), and Raúl Castro (Cuba), Stone sheds new light upon the transformations in the region.

Made with plastic toys, painted sets, a surreal sense of humour and boundless imagination, this Belgian animation is the first stop-motion movie to be an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Three toys named Cowboy, Indian, and Horse, share a house in a rural town; Cowboy and Indian’s plan to make a homemade barbecue for Horse goes awry when they accidentally order 50 million bricks. With echoes of Buster Keaton, A Town Called Panic is a treat for children and adults.

This Chilean hit combines family drama with a metaphorical analysis of Latin American society. Raquel has been one Santiago family’s maid for 20 years, enjoying and suffering all the intimacies and antagonisms her role brings. Wanting to support Raquel as she grows more fatigued by her work, the family hires a second maid, the younger Lucy, but the decision to hire extra help rubs Raquel the wrong way...
With: Jean-Claude Donda, Edith Rankin
Glasgow Film Festival

When a prodigal son who has given up a potential career as a classical pianist to work in the oil fields comes home to see his father for the last time, he must confront the rich, sophisticated life he has left behind. This subtle, existential character study of an emotionally distant outcast remains an intimate cornerstone of American ‘70s cinema.

Andrew Garfield

Glasgow Film Festival

Glasgow Film Festival

Much more than a ripped-from-the-headlines docudrama, The Social Network is a timeless study of unchecked ambition, status and privilege in America, and those other, more precious things money can’t buy. MARY AND MAX (CERT TBC) A dark but lovable tale of friendship against the odds. Australian schoolgirl Mary inadvertently becomes penpal to Max, a middle-aged, obese New Yorker with a unique mindset.

The Wildest Dream follows mountaineer Conrad Anker, the man who found Mallory’s frozen remains 75 years after his death, as he attempts to explore the mystery of whether Mallory may have succeeded in his assault on Everest long before any other.
Starring: Karen Black, Jack Nicholson
Starring: Chloe Sevigny, Rhys Ifans,
When a prodigal son who has given up a potential career as a classical pianist to work in the oil fields comes home to see his father for the last time, he must confront the rich, sophisticated life he has left behind. This subtle, existential character study of an emotionally distant outcast remains an intimate cornerstone of American ‘70s cinema.
David Thewlis
Rhys Ifans gives the performance of a lifetime in this wild biopic of the infamous Howard Marks. An Oxford physics graduate from the Welsh Valleys who became a drug-runner, dope aficionado, celebrated author and sometime spy, Marks here becomes the engaging antihero of a rollicking cinematic ride, based on his own hit autobiography.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (CERT TBC)

Welcome to the surreal and vibrant world of Rafael Rozendaal where you’re confronted with a website where you find nothing but a wobbling jelly or your screen is smashed into a thousand tiny pieces. Instead of uploading stuff from the real world to an online place, Rafael has been creating a kind of hybrid manifestation of ideas and building new landscapes on the internet since 2001. Rafael takes over URL’s and populates websites with colourful looping films and familiar objects that beg to be played with. He describes his computer as “...a space, a world, a landscape; it’s screen has more dimensions than real life: in a browser window you can look further than in a real window.” For Digital Broadway RR has kindly agreed to explode his web archive, presenting a series of work across the public spaces and online within Broadway’s website.
Digital Broadway is part of the Nottingham Creative Business Awards ‘Design Trail in partnership with Creative October.
