This adaptation of the famous Terence Rattigan play is a wonderfully brooding story of post-war passion with Rachel Weisz never more mesmerising as the privileged 1950s judge’s wife who becomes enamoured with a young exRAF pilot. It’s a superbly crafted and unapologetically passionate tale that further serves to confirm Terence Davies as a cinematic national treasure.

Starring: Hebe Duarte, German De Silva

Dir: Jean-Pierre Ameris France 2010 77m

The great Italian comic filmmaker, Nanni Moretti turns his satirical eye on the nomination of a new Pope. When the man is chosen he freezes at the immense responsibilities throwing the Vatican, and all Catholics into a major crisis. A psychiatrist is called in to help the elected Pope overcome his nerves, but the anointed man has other ideas. A magnificent blend of high-concept humour with a deeply affecting portrait of a man elected to an office that carries crushing responsibilities.

Starring: Sabine Azéma, Daniel Auteuil,

Take a trip to the North Pole and discover exactly how Santa Claus makes Christmas magic happen every year in this imaginative comedy from Aardman Animation. We’re introduced to Santa’s mischievous son Arthur, who races to complete an important mission in time to ensure that this year’s Christmas celebrations will go off without a hitch.

In a gentle and deeply touching road movie, a poignant relationship slowly grows between a lonely truck driver, Rubén and a single mother, Jacinta, who travels with her 8-month-old baby on the long journey from Asunción del Paraguay to Buenos Aires. A subtle and rewarding emotional drama, Las Acacias won the prestigious Camera d’Or, the new filmmakers’ prize at Cannes Film Festival.

A young orphan living in a Paris train station uncovers a mystery that jeopardizes his secretive way of life in this Martin Scorsese-directed adaptation of Brian Selznick’s stunning children’s book. As it’s Christmas, normal prices apply - no 3D surcharge!

An angel helps a despairing businessman by showing him what life would have been like had he never existed... A Christmas classic which never fails to bring a tear to the eye.

Stellan Skarsgard

Starring: Isabelle Carré , Benoit Poelvoorde

A discredited journalist and a mysterious computer hacker discover that even the wealthiest families have skeletons in their closets while working to solve the mystery of a 40-year-old murder in this David Fincher-directed remake of the successful Swedish thriller based on Stieg Larsson’s book.

A big hit in France, this delectable comedy tells the story of Angélique, an unemployed but gifted chocolate-maker with a lifelong case of uncontrollable shyness. Jean-René suffers from a similar case of terminal abashment and runs a fledgling chocolate company in desperate need of a new direction. When Jean-René hires Angélique, the two nervous Nellies must face their deepest fears. Director Améris teases out the fairy-tale quality of this timid romance while grounding the film’s charm and spirit firmly in its lovable and authentic protagonists. Tribecca Film Festival

Twenty-five years after he made his name acting in Claude Berri’s adaptations of two of Marcel Pagnol’s most famous novels, ‘Jean de Florette’ and ‘Manon des sources’, Daniel Auteuil returns to Provence for his first feature as a director. In 1940, 18-year-old Patricia, the daughter of well digger Pascal, discovers she is pregnant. The father-to-be, Jacques, is not around - a fighter pilot, he is missing, presumed dead - and his wealthy family don’t want to have anything to do with Patricia. The simplicity of Auteuil’s direction gives the film its truly authentic charm, and the superb score by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech) makes fine use of early 1940s period songs to heighten the atmosphere. MEET ME IN ST LOUIS (U)

On the eve of an epic global discovery a second Earth glowing in the sky - two strangers, John and Rhoda, collide in a tragedy that forever changes their lives. Four years later the two, both shadows of their former selves, slowly come together as an unlikely couple. A rare, successful hybrid of high-concept science fiction film and scrappy independent, fearlessly asking of their audience “What would you do if you met another you?” LA FILM FEST

Another chance to see this splendid film adaptation of John Le Carre’s Cold War-era espionage classic “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” It follows middleaged, pen-pushing British intelligence operative, George Smiley, who must find the identity of a Soviet mole within ‘The Circus’, the highest echelons of MI6.

Dir: Vincente Minnelli United States 1944 113m Starring: Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien

Directed by Vincente Minnelli during WWII, Meet Me in St Louis is a delightful, classic, nostalgic, poignant, and romanticised musical film - and one of the greatest musicals ever made.

THE STORY OF LOVER’S ROCK (12A) Dir: Menelik Shabazz United Kingdom 2011 100m

During the late 1970s and 1980s, against a backdrop of racial tension and riots, a uniquely black British sound called Lovers Rock came to the fore. Often dubbed ‘romantic reggae’, the sounds provided an escape for a generation struggling to cope with what was happening on the streets. This documentary celebrates the pivotal but largely forgotten moment in black British culture with live performances and star interviews.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn United States 2011 100m Starring: Carey Mulligan, Ryan Gosling

From the amazing opening action sequence on the streets of L.A., you know you are in the hands of a hardboiled master. Refn brings a savage poetry to this haunting, violent thriller.

POST SCREENING Q&A Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives, The Long Day Closes) is one of the UK's most sensitive and poetic directors. His skilfully crafted films are imbued with a great humanity and emotional power, and he has produced a body of work which is both evocative and affecting. In this his latest film, The Deep Blue Sea, Davies brings a customary richness of composition and a powerful sense of time, place and physicality to Terence Rattigan's exquisite drama. We are delighted to welcome Terence Davies to Broadway to discuss this film and his very personal method of filmmaking after the screening on 7th December.
