After receiving a sweepstakes letter in the mail, a booze-addled and cantankerous father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim the million dollar Mega Sweepstakes prize he thinks he’s won. From the director of Sideways and The Descendants, Nebraska tells the stories of family life in the heartland of America with a stand out performance from Bruce Dern, who won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival.

This punky adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel is a glossary of grimness, a dictionary of darkness. But it also dishes up humour that’s blacker than a winter’s night in the Highlands and unpolished anarchy that’s true to Welsh’s out-there, frighteningly frank prose. Time Out
David Niven
Fearless optimist Anna sets off on an epic journey, teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven, to find her sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.
Starring: Will Ferrell, Steve Carell
Robert Redford, as you’ve never seen him before, stars in this riveting survival story in which a lone sailor finds his yacht sinking after a collision with a discarded shipping container in the middle of the Indian Ocean. As the days pass and his options steadily dwindle, the luckless and nameless protagonist identified in the credits as “Our Man” takes every step possible in a struggle for self-preservation that puts his intelligence and practicality to the ultimate test. Focusing on a sole individual contending with the forces of nature who speaks only a handful of words throughout, this remarkable second effort by director J.C. Chandor is a genuine technical feat. But in the end the film belongs to Redford’s fearless performance, alone on screen from start to finish, facing the prospect of death with quiet determination. NYFF

Bilbo Baggins and his Company continue their epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor in the second chapter of The Hobbit’s trilogy. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering the skinchanger Beorn and a swarm of giant spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. Escaping capture along the way, the Company sets to face the greatest danger of all - the Dragon Smaug.
“A thoroughly sweet and charming movie.” The Guardian
Heavenly bells are ringing, jubilant choirs are singing and Christmas joy is blanketing the world like freshly fallen snow. But the Yuletide spirit has yet to warm Bishop Henry Brougham’s Victorian home. Struggling to raise funds for a new cathedral, the preoccupied young clergyman has neglected his loving wife Julia, and now only divine intervention in the form of an angel called Dudley can save their marriage!

NEBRASKA KILL YOUR DARLINGS THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES ALL IS LOST
The story of the Beat Generation is well documented in cinema, but rarely has it been rendered with such originality and fervour as in John Krokidas’ striking debut, Kill Your Darlings. Following a young Allen Ginsberg as he navigates his way through freshman year at Colombia in 1944, the film recounts his burgeoning friendships with William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, and his increasingly noxious relationship with the Lucien Carr; to whom Ginsberg would later dedicate his celebrated poem ‘Howl’. In the lead role, Daniel Radcliffe shines as the infamous young poet desperate to escape from his academic prison and figure out the man he wants to be. BFI

Bram Stoker’s widow tried to have all copies of this unlicensed Dracula destroyed, but like any good vampire, it just wouldn’t stay dead. The peak of German gothicism, Nosferatu still shocks today with its images and undertones of both political and social corruption. Now benefiting from a brand new restoration, Schreck’s unequalled vampiric monster has never looked so terrifying.

THE EPIC OF EVEREST
CONTINUING INTO DECEMBER
Dir: J B L Noel United Kingdom 1924 87m
The official film record of the third attempt to climb Everest is one of the most remarkable films in the BFI National Archive. This legendary expedition culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an on-going debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit. Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a specially adapted camera, Captain John Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historical significance.
PAGNOL’S MARIUS AND FANNY
Veteran French actor Daniel Auteuil has always had a keen passion for celebrated compatriot Marcel Pagnol – the bard of Auteuil’s native Provence. After breaking through on screen in adaptations of Jean De Florette and Manon Des Sources, the actor made his directorial debut with a film of Pagnol’s The Well-Digger’s Daughter, and has now turned to the Marseille-born playwright’s acclaimed Marius/Fanny/César trilogy.
