VICE (15) 132m BAFTA nominated in six categories with a Golden Globe winning performance by an unrecognizable Christian Bale, Vice is a political movie that will make you laugh out loud while at the same time making you realize that the Trump we fear today was nurtured by the behind the scenes power-grabbing of Vice-President Dick Cheney. It’s 1962 and black classical pianist Dr Don Shirley is looking for a chauffeur to drive him on a tour of the Deep South, and also act as protector. Not the obvious first choice, least so for his questionable views on race, Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip is hired for the job. Initially struggling to get along, the mismatched pair soon warm up to each other and so begins a touching friendship in this charming new film from Peter Farrelly.
Starring: Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun
It’s 1613 and William Shakespeare is renowned as one of the greatest writers of his time, but the Globe Theatre has burnt to the ground and the Bard has retired to his family home in Stratford-upon-Avon. There, he must face the ghosts of his past – particularly the death of his only son – and attempt to mend the broken relationships with his long-suffering wife and daughters. Kenneth Branagh delivers an intimate and revelatory portrait of a fascinating genius and flawed man.
Starring: KiKi Layne, Stephan James
One of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time, Marie Colvin is widely recognised by the eye patch she has worn ever since being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka. She has sacrificed her own safety and personal life to give a voice to the voiceless, and she now embarks on her most dangerous assignment yet in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. Based on Marie Colvin’s true life, Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) offers a fascinating portrait of a fearless and extraordinary woman.
The citizens of Bricksburg face a dangerous new threat when LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space start to wreck everything in their path. The battle to defeat them takes Emmet, Lucy, Batman and the rest of their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds that test their courage and creativity in this highly-anticipated sequel.
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant
Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw
Once a best-selling celebrity biographer, Israel Lee finds herself out of fashion in the trash-talking trend of the early 1990s. Encouraged by her mischievous drinking buddy Jack, Israel begins to forge letters from dead celebrities and sell them as memorabilia, even fooling the experts. But success doesn’t go unnoticed and soon buyers start to question the sudden provenance of these astonishing documents. Dark, witty and based on a true story, Can You Ever Forgive Me? features outstanding performances from Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant.
Zain may only be 12 years old, but he’s no longer a child. Growing up in an impoverished part of Beirut in an overcrowded apartment with his negligent parents and his many siblings, he’s too familiar with resentment and despair. And now, in prison for a violent crime, he is suing his parents for bringing him into such a desperate world. Nadine Labaki offers a visceral and powerful piece of neorealism and humanism that is as harrowing as it is life-affirming.
“Strong performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali highlight a broadly entertaining crowd-pleaser about racial division in the 1960s.” The Guardian CAPTIONED SCREENING

When Jongsu unexpectedly bumps into childhood friend, Haemi, a romance soon starts to bloom. About to leave for a trip to Africa, Haemi asks Jongsu to look after her elusive cat but when she returns, she isn’t alone – she has met a mysteriously wealthy and charismatic young man named Ben. As every encounter raises more and more questions, tensions escalate and Jongsu soon suspects Ben’s intentions may not be what they seem.

“Is it a love triangle, a murder mystery or a comment on the human condition? Whatever you call this stunning, slow-build thriller from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, it sizzles with a cumulative power that will knock the wind out of you.” Rolling Stone
TUE 12, 5.45PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.
FRI 1, 7.45PM INTRODUCTION Dr Chi-Yun Shin, Principal Lecturer in Film Studies at Sheffield Hallam University, will introduce this screening. Dr Shin co-edited New Korean Cinema (Edinburgh University Press, 2005), and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema and East Asian Journal of Popular Culture.
Moonlight director Barry Jenkins returns with this achingly beautiful James Baldwin adaptation about young lovers struggling against the unjust circumstances threatening to keep them apart. Set in early-1970s Harlem, while the themes of Beale Street are urgent and often tragic, the film is also suffused with warmth, capturing both its characters’ suffering and their joy. A fitting tribute to Baldwin and a striking reminder of Jenkins’s unique talent, If Beale Street Could Talk is a stirring, soulful portrait of black love and resilience. Philadelphia Film Festival “Barry Jenkins creates one of the year’s 10 best films by celebrating black love and a human connection that can raise you up and move you to tears.” Rolling Stone
