It’s 1962 and black classical pianist Dr Don Shirley is looking for a chauffeur to drive him on a tour of the Deep South, and also act as protector. One of the most celebrated war correspondents of our time, Marie Colvin is widely recognised by the eye patch she has worn ever since being hit by a grenade in Sri Lanka. She has sacrificed her own safety and personal life to give a voice to the voiceless, and she now embarks on her most dangerous assignment yet in the besieged Syrian city of Homs. Based on Marie Colvin’s true life, Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) offers a fascinating portrait of a fearless and extraordinary woman.
The citizens of Bricksburg face a dangerous new threat when LEGO DUPLO invaders from outer space start to wreck everything in their path. The battle to defeat them takes Emmet, Lucy, Batman and the rest of their friends to faraway, unexplored worlds that test their courage and creativity in this highly-anticipated sequel.

Once a best-selling celebrity biographer, Israel Lee finds herself out of fashion in the trash-talking trend of the early 1990s. Encouraged by her mischievous drinking buddy Jack, Israel begins to forge letters from dead celebrities and sell them as memorabilia, even fooling the experts. But success doesn’t go unnoticed and soon buyers start to question the sudden provenance of these astonishing documents. Dark, witty and based on a true story, Can You Ever Forgive Me? features outstanding performances from Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant.
Zain may only be 12 years old, but he’s no longer a child. Growing up in an impoverished part of Beirut in an overcrowded apartment with his negligent parents and his many siblings, he’s too familiar with resentment and despair. And now, in prison for a violent crime, he is suing his parents for bringing him into such a desperate world. Nadine Labaki offers a visceral and powerful piece of neorealism and humanism that is as harrowing as it is life-affirming.

VICE (15) 132m BAFTA nominated in six categories with a Golden Globe winning performance by an unrecognizable Christian Bale, Vice is a political movie that will make you laugh out loud while at the same time making you realize that the Trump we fear today was nurtured by the behind the scenes power-grabbing of Vice-President Dick Cheney. It’s 1962 and black classical pianist Dr Don Shirley is looking for a chauffeur to drive him on a tour of the Deep South, and also act as protector. Not the obvious first choice, least so for his questionable views on race, Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip is hired for the job. Initially struggling to get along, the mismatched pair soon warm up to each other and so begins a touching friendship in this charming new film from Peter Farrelly.
Starring: Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun
It’s 1613 and William Shakespeare is renowned as one of the greatest writers of his time, but the Globe Theatre has burnt to the ground and the Bard has retired to his family home in Stratford-upon-Avon. There, he must face the ghosts of his past – particularly the death of his only son – and attempt to mend the broken relationships with his long-suffering wife and daughters. Kenneth Branagh delivers an intimate and revelatory portrait of a fascinating genius and flawed man.
Starring: KiKi Layne, Stephan James
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant
Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw
“Strong performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali highlight a broadly entertaining crowd-pleaser about racial division in the 1960s.” The Guardian CAPTIONED SCREENING

When Jongsu unexpectedly bumps into childhood friend, Haemi, a romance soon starts to bloom. About to leave for a trip to Africa, Haemi asks Jongsu to look after her elusive cat but when she returns, she isn’t alone – she has met a mysteriously wealthy and charismatic young man named Ben. As every encounter raises more and more questions, tensions escalate and Jongsu soon suspects Ben’s intentions may not be what they seem.
CAPTIONED SCREENING
“Is it a love triangle, a murder mystery or a comment on the human condition? Whatever you call this stunning, slow-build thriller from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, it sizzles with a cumulative power that will knock the wind out of you.” Rolling Stone
TUE 12, 5.45PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.
FRI 1, 7.45PM INTRODUCTION Dr Chi-Yun Shin, Principal Lecturer in Film Studies at Sheffield Hallam University, will introduce this screening. Dr Shin co-edited New Korean Cinema (Edinburgh University Press, 2005), and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema and East Asian Journal of Popular Culture.
Moonlight director Barry Jenkins returns with this achingly beautiful James Baldwin adaptation about young lovers struggling against the unjust circumstances threatening to keep them apart. Set in early-1970s Harlem, while the themes of Beale Street are urgent and often tragic, the film is also suffused with warmth, capturing both its characters’ suffering and their joy. A fitting tribute to Baldwin and a striking reminder of Jenkins’s unique talent, If Beale Street Could Talk is a stirring, soulful portrait of black love and resilience. Philadelphia Film Festival “Barry Jenkins creates one of the year’s 10 best films by celebrating black love and a human connection that can raise you up and move you to tears.” Rolling Stone

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant
Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw
“Strong performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali highlight a broadly entertaining crowd-pleaser about racial division in the 1960s.” The Guardian CAPTIONED SCREENING
MON 11, 8PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant
Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw

“Is it a love triangle, a murder mystery or a comment on the human condition? Whatever you call this stunning, slow-build thriller from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, it sizzles with a cumulative power that will knock the wind out of you.” Rolling Stone

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant
Starring: Zain Al Rafeea, Yordanos Shiferaw
“Strong performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali highlight a broadly entertaining crowd-pleaser about racial division in the 1960s.” The Guardian CAPTIONED SCREENING

THE FINAL GIRLS PRESENT: WE ARE THE WEIRDOS – SECOND EDITION
Dir: Ali Abbasi Sweden/Denmark
The unforgettable voice behind “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and “Close the Door”, Teddy Pendergrass was the first male African American artist to record five consecutive platinum albums in the US, but his career was struck by tragedy in 1982 when a car accident left him paralysed at the age of just 31. Featuring revealing interviews with those close to him, this insightful documentary captures his rise to fame against the backdrop of 1960s America and his victorious comeback at Live Aid after his life-changing accident.

Many films have dealt with Picasso’s later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements.

Fed up with being pushed around, a group of gay and trans teens of colour form a gang and fight back on the brutal streets of Washington D.C. They call their gang ‘Check it’ and this group of one-time victims of bullying, rape and abuse have turned the tables on anyone trying to hurt them. This raw and intimate portrait follows three childhood friends as they struggle to survive and claw their way out of gang life through an unlikely avenue: fashion. Co-directors Toby Oppenheimer and Dana Flor create a moving story of empowerment and a provocative exploration of class, marginalization and gang violence. THE FILMS OF MARGARETHE VON TROTTA The first female director to win the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival, Margarethe Von Trotta (1942-) is to thank for some of the most trailblazing films of the past five decades. We’ll be showing four of her films between November and February, representing the best of New German Cinema and von Trotta’s exceptional talent in portraying how the personal is political.
Dir: Margarethe Von Trotta Germany 1981 107m
Based on the relationship between Gudrun Ensslin - a key member of the Red Army Faction ("Baader-Meinhof gang") - and her older sister Christiane, it tells the story of two sisters growing up in post-war West Germany as it moved from austerity into plenty, and yet remained a place of repression, and in denial of the moral implications of its recent Nazi past. The film will be introduced by Rona Murray, a film lecturer and freelance media educator who works on women’s authorship in film and television. She has presented regularly on film and television topics, including German cinema, and has published work on the cinema of Agnès Varda and Kim Longinotto.
2018 110m Starring: Eva Melander, Eero Molinoff

From Queen of Lesbian Pulp Ann Bannon revealing Beebo Brinker’s secrets, to poet-activist Audre Lorde putting her finger on the essential moment the queer underground joined hands with the Civil Rights movement, the film travels from Harlem speakeasies to McCarthyism via Rosie the Riveter, showing a community and culture ready to explode by 1968. Deploying a treasure trove of archive footage and historical songs laced with double entendres, this incredibly important documentary shows that we’ve always been here, been queer, and ready to riot. The film will be introduced by Rona Murray, a film lecturer and freelance media educator who works on women’s authorship in film and television. She has presented regularly on film and television topics, including German cinema, and has published work on the cinema of Agnès Varda and Kim Longinotto.

Feminist horror film collective The Final Girls present a selection of short films from some of the most exciting new female voices in international genre cinema. Films that delve deep into the darkest corners of the human experience, bringing an unforgettable array of monsters and horrors to the screen. The Final Girls bring the second edition of their sold-out tour We Are The Weirdos to Broadway, shining a spotlight on some of the up-and-coming filmmakers and their fresh (and perverse) takes on the horror genre.

Many films have dealt with Picasso’s later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did this all begin? What made Picasso in the first place? This raw and intimate portrait follows three childhood friends as they struggle to survive and claw their way out of gang life through an unlikely avenue: fashion.

Will life as a sex worker bring him the happiness he craves, or will it toughen and transform him beyond recognition? TEDDY PENDERGRASS: IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME

We love film and we love to share our passion for film. This mystery film is chosen by one of our film-loving staff and is one we feel deserves to be (re)discovered on the big screen. Expect anything from classics to gone-under-the-radar, and from favourites to underrated. We’ll introduce the event and let you know who selected it, but the film will remain a mystery until the lights actually go down. Tickets: £3.50

The Personal THE GERMAN SISTERS is PoliTical + INTRODUCTION

Dan Hunt Followed by a panel discussion with Zaimal Azad (Hate Crime Project Officer, Nottingham City Council), Grace Moronfolu (Inclusion and Community Engagement Manager, CPS), and special guests.
