Set in classic Hollywood in the 1950s, Hitchcock is the behind-the-scenes story of the famous director’s personal life and his love affair with his wife and partner, Alma Reville. Told against the backdrop of the making of the director’s masterpiece, Psycho, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren play Hitchcock and his wife, and Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh. What begins merely as an ambitious film project eventually tests the limits of their marriage, yet with groundbreaking new editing, sound and advertising, the two overcome the odds and create one of cinema’s enduring masterpieces.
In 1988, in an effort to extend and legitimize its rule, the Chilean military junta announced it would hold a plebiscite to get the people’s permission to stay in power. Despite being given 15 minutes a day to plead its case on television, the anti-Pinochet opposition was divided and without a clear message. Enter Rene Saavedra (an excellent Gael García Bernal), an ad man who, after a career pushing soft drinks and soap, sets out to sell Chileans on democracy and freedom. A smart, funny and totally engrossing political thriller with a powerful resonance for our times. NYFF
Eleven-year-old Koichi and nine-yearold Ryunosuke are as close as brothers can be. But when their parents divorce, the two find themselves living hundreds of kilometres away from one another. Determined to be together, the brothers plan an unlikely cross-country journey to make a wish in front of two passing bullet trains. With I Wish, Japanese maestro Hirokazu Kore-eda has crafted one of his most unassuming, warmhearted films to date.
TinkerBell and her fairy friends cross a “great divide” into the mysterious and forbidden Winter Woods. Curiosity and adventure soon lead TinkerBell to reveal a magical secret that will change her world forever when she meets Periwinkle, a winter fairy who is equally high-spirited and playful. From acclaimed filmmakers Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski, the powerful and inspiring epic Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future. Malick follows The Tree Of Life in record time with an even more experimental feature, which turns the ups and downs of a contemporary couple into an epic examination of the human condition. The near-absence of dialogue and the stream-ofconsciousness structure guarantees To The Wonder will prove as divisive as The Tree Of Life, but it’s also a new kind of relationship movie, with Affleck and Kurylenko fully inhabiting their conflicted characters even without words. McAdams turns in a powerhouse cameo as a radiant young woman who threatens to steal Affleck’s heart. NOW Magazine
Bill Murray provides a career-topping performance as President Franklin D. Roosevelt in this captivating, winningly acted comedy-drama that pulls back the curtain on the complicated domestic arrangements at FDR’s beautiful New York country estate. Hyde Park on Hudson revolves around the royal visit of King George VI (yes, him again!) to the United States on the eve of World War II; it’s an entrancing peek at a time when the personal secrets of our leaders were well and truly kept. The long-awaited follow-up to her exquisite Somersault, Australian director Cate Shortland’s adaptation of the novel ‘The Dark Room’ by Rachel Seiffert is a sensual and complex story that explores the tribulations faced by the young in the aftermath of World War II. When their Nazi SS parents are taken into Allied custody, five siblings are left to fend for themselves. Teenaged Lore, the oldest, takes charge, and the children set out to join their grandmother in Hamburg, some 900km away. A coming-of-age tale set against the backdrop of a changing world, Lore shows new life emerging out of darkness with great intelligence and subtlety. Sydney Film Festival
THU 21, 10.30AM & 1.30PM This gentle romantic comedy tells the story of Norman, the manager of the council-run theatre on Cromer Pier. He is stubbornly keen to broaden his patrons’ horizons with the odd attempt at Chekhov - follies that tend to end ruinously. The council installs a hated assistant to “help out” with the programming, and Norman resolves to stage one last show. His revival of Alma Cogan offers the chance to return to a decades-old encounter with Alma, an unrequited love.

A major box office success in Belgium, the film follows Jacky, a cattle farmer who maintains a strict regimen of hormones and steroids. Against his better judgment, Jacky agrees to make a backdoor deal with a mafia connected West-Flemish beef trader. But the consequences of his decision soon come to haunt him when a federal agent is murdered and a woman from Jacky’s past emerges. A blistering debut for director Michael Roskam with a breakout performance from Matthias Schoenaerts, Bullhead is a crime film bursting with originality and brimming with thematic pathos.

A great half-term treat. Tickets £3.50

This irrepressible crowd-pleaser tells the story of a seniors’ choir whose unorthodox song list includes ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ and ‘Love Shack’. Gemma Arterton is the perpetually perky choirmaster, while Terence Stamp gives good grouch as Arthur, whose ailing wife (Vanessa Redgrave) hooks him up with the choir. Prepare to tap your feet and dab your eyes. National Post.com

FROM FRI 22
From acclaimed filmmakers Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski, the powerful and inspiring epic Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future. Drama, mystery, action and enduring love thread through a story that unfolds in multiple lifetimes as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. Chicago Film Festival
“A witty, involving, upbeat story about kids and the miracle of life... delightful and uplifting.” Hollywood Reporter
LORE (15)

LORE (15)
Starring: Saskia Rosendahl, Nele Trebs

LINCOLN (12A)
A major box office success in Belgium, the film follows Jacky, a cattle farmer who maintains a strict regimen of hormones and steroids.

LORE (15)
Starring: Saskia Rosendahl, Nele Trebs

LINCOLN (12A)
A major box office success in Belgium, the film follows Jacky, a cattle farmer who maintains a strict regimen of hormones and steroids.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (12A)
A LIAR’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY (3D) (15)
Dir: Robert Aldrich United States 1962 130m
Dir: Bill Jones United Kingdom 2012 85m
Starring: Joan Crawford, Bette Davis
Ready for something completely different? In the spirit of the late Graham Chapman’s five-author, highly fictionalized autobiography, this carnivalesque adaptation combines the talents of three directors and 15 animation studios, each employing a different stylistic approach to the source material. Chapman’s characteristically wry audio recordings of his memoir give voice to his myriad avatars as they guide us through the seminal moments of his always colourful, occasionally debauched life. Furthermore, former Monty Python compatriots band together for the first time in a decade to lend their vocal talents and pay irreverent tribute to “the dead one.”
A new print of the 1962 psychological thriller starring an understated, wheelchair-bound Joan Crawford and an over-the-top, off-her-rocker Bette Davis as twisted sisters. Calling it simply a camp classic would be an understatement. http://lgbtweekly.com

This film explores war photographer Don McCullin’s life and work, and also the way the ethos of journalism has changed throughout his career. The film is a commentary on the history of photojournalism told through the lens of one of its most acclaimed practitioners. Working at a critical time in global photojournalism, McCullin witnessed many changes to publishing and editorial freedom for newspapers to print what they wanted.
The film closely examines the restaurant Jiro Ono operates - a 10-seat, sushi-only diner located in a Tokyo subway station. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a prestigious three-star Michelin Guide rating, and sushi lovers from around the globe make repeated pilgrimage, calling months in advance and shelling out top dollar for a coveted seat at Jiro’s sushi bar.
A Musical History sung and spoken by Will Kaufman Part of the Nottwords Festival, this live musical programme sets the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of the American 1930s - the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself. Will Kaufman brings such hard-hitting Guthrie songs as ‘Vigilante Man’, ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ and ‘I Ain’t Got No Home’ into conversation with other songs of the Depression Era. Normal ticket prices apply.

It’s not just that Pertti Kurikka’s Name Day is an unusual name for a band; it’s quite an unusual band in itself. Each of its four members have learning difficulties and have grown up well aware of their differences. Now they belt out their emotions in heartfelt, full pelt punk songs – building up a huge, affectionate fan base in their native Finland. In this enjoyable, life affirming film, we follow them as they play to bigger and bigger gigs, at the same time dealing with the everyday frustrations of being “different”. SIDF

SIDF

SIDF

SIDF

The third feature from Montreal’s Xavier Dolan centres on a young bohemian couple whose defiantly exclusive relationship is sent spiraling when the man, Laurence, confesses that he believes he’s transgendered. This audacious and searing mediation on love and sexuality is shot in hyper-florid style and driven by gutsy performances.
