127 Hours is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston’s remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary. Full of visual invention that exhibits a kinetic sense of cinema, complemented by a superb score from Slumdog collaborator A.R. Rahman, Boyle has followed up one great success with another.
Every so often, a film appears that is not only outstanding, but also likely to appeal to a wide audience. This is one of those films. It tells the story of Bertie, Duke of York, the future George VI and father of our current Queen, and his inability to speak in public, because of his stammer. He was lucky enough to meet Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist who was unwilling to be deferential, but whose methods were more effective than anything that had been tried before. This is a film to make you laugh, cry and feel uplifted. Don’t miss it.
One of the stand-out films in this year's Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals, Blue Valentine is an intelligent, heartbreaking story of a couple nearing the end of their marriage. Dean and Cindy are parents of a beloved young daughter, but their relationship seems set in a downward spiral. In flashback we see the pleasure and promise of their early relationship, and the film pulls us between past and present, giving us a subtly drawn, non-judgemental portrait of the ebb and flow of love.
Starring: Michael Lonsdale, Lambert Wilson
Mila Kunis
Starring: Javier Bardem, Hanaa Bouchaib,
The harrowing true story of a brotherhood of French monks in the highlands of North Africa who find themselves threatened by Islamic extremists during the Algerian Civil War of the 1990s. When insurgents arrive, they find themselves faced with an impossible decision: to flee, or to stand their ground and fulfil their spiritual mission. A poetic, austerely beautiful triumph.
A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, Black Swan stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company. Black Swan takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. With stunning visuals and masterful performances, Black Swan combines a rare mix of beauty and grotesquerie to shape a remarkable narrative. Potent and dazzling, Aronofsky’s latest feature is a testament to his visionary talent.

Back by popular demand! Set in 9th century Ireland, the film opens in the fortified Kells Abbey, whose outer walls provide the last line of defence against the Vikings, while also acting as a frustrating limit to the playground of our hero, twelve-year-old Brendan. His uncle, Abbott Cellach, rules the abbey with an iron rod but despite this, young Brendan finds fun and friendship with the motley crew of illuminators who work on the abbey’s greatest treasure, The Book of Kells.

The sheer fun of classic kids' adventure movies is perfectly captured and slightly lampooned in the deliciously winning Rare Exports. Jalmari Helander expands on his hit shorts to create a prequel in which a boy realizes an excavation near his Arctic hometown has released the original, evil Santa Claus from his frozen prison. Conceived with winking humour and a terrific visual style, the film is a rare treat that could accrue cult status. Variety

Variety

Variety

The first film to sweep all five major Oscars, this is one of the screen’s most effervescent romantic comedies. It’s crammed with marvellous scenes such as ‘the Wall of Jericho’ and hitch-hiking, and the Gable-Colbert pairing is a delight.
Timeless comedy about a country hick who goes to New York to pick up a 20 million dollar inheritance which he begins to give away to the needy, only to find himself in court in a battle to prove his sanity.
One of Frank Capra’s true movie gems about a young senator trying to be honest in a world where integrity takes a back seat to money and power. This story of corruption in politics and the greatness of the men who resist it would not be lost on politicians today. FRANK CAPRA
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (U)
Following from Jonathan Demme’s groundbreaking Talking Heads doc Stop Making Sense Ride, Rise, Roar is a David Byrne concert film that blends riveting onstage performances with intimate details of the creative collaborations that make the music and performance happen. Shot with multiple cameras over several concerts during the “Everything that happens will happen today” tour, the film blends the energy and charisma of classic Talking Heads with the heartfelt pathos of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s most recent collaboration. Followed by a Live by Satellite Q&A with David Byrne and special set.

The 1960s saw an explosion of culture and massive changes in the way we lived. The British film industry reflected the decade with a vibrant output and a rich mix of genres. From kitchen sink realism to Swinging London, with James Bond, Carry Ons and much more in between, this course will take a chronological look at films in this decade.
The next level up from the beginner’s course, this course involves developing and work-shopping your project - either a short screenplay or a treatment for a full length movie - and will require you to write between sessions. Application for the course will be by submission of a half to one page story outline, and the 10 places will be awarded on merit. A good grasp of screenwriting basics is essential.
The course will use film extracts to consider the work of individual directors and compare examples of different directors’ work in order to consider the concept of the ‘woman’s film’, feminist film and the role of a female director as author of her work. Examples of relevant directors are Sally Potter, Jane Campion, Andrea Arnold, Agnes Varda, Catherine Breillat, Margarethe von Trotta and Kathryn Bigelow.

A poetic essay about loss and memory: twenty years after the death of a dear friend, the filmmaker reenacts a journey on the TransSiberian train to investigate how ghostly images of the past invade the present.
FRANK CAPRA

Send your submissions BEFORE 10 JAN to Eleanor Thornley at the Broadway address and be sure to include your contact details.

This course focuses on directors who had two distinct phases in their careers: first in their native Europe and later in America. Some were forced to leave for political reasons; others chose to emigrate. How did these Strangers in Paradise respond to the culture shock that is Hollywood? Fritz Lang, Douglas Sirk, Alexander Mackendrick and Roman Polanski are among the filmmakers to be considered.
Wrap up warmly, bring the family and join us in Highfields Park for stage performances including the popular Dragon and Lion dance and plenty more to entertain before the firework finale over the lake at 6.30pm.

SE OU SH AS GL
A poetic essay about loss and memory: twenty years after the death of a dear friend, the filmmaker reenacts a journey on the TransSiberian train to investigate how ghostly images of the past invade the present. Both psycho-geography and emotional revelation, the film blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction. Acclaimed moving image artist Sarah Turner will attend this screening.
