A bold, black comedy from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu that shines a light directly back on the film industry. Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance tells the story of an actor who is famous for portraying an iconic superhero as he struggles to mount a Broadway play and battles his ego while attempting to recover his family, his career, and himself. Iñárritu’s camera magically prowls, careens, and soars in and around the theatre, yet remains alive to the most precious subtleties and surprises between his formidable actors. An extravagant dream of a movie, alternately hilarious and terrifying.

As the world commemorates the Great War’s centenary, Vera Brittain’s WWI memoir is brought to the big screen in this brilliant and moving adaptation. Intelligent and free-spirited Vera’s dreams are brutally shattered by the onset of war as her lover and her brother are shipped out to the front. Leaving behind her university life to volunteer as a nurse she is immediately confronted with the pitiless reality of the war’s victims.

Starring: J.K. Simmons, Miles Teller

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones

Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz is summoned by wealthy John du Pont’s estate to help form a team to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics in his new state-of-the-art training facility, where Mark hopes to escape the shadow of his brother and revered wrestler, Dave. Winner of the Best Director Award at Cannes, director Bennett Miller explores real, complex characters in society through enthralling performances from Carell, Tatum and Ruffalo, and uncovering a side of American life never touched before in film.

Set in 1981 during one of the most crime-ridden winters in New York City’s history, J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year follows Abel and Anna Morales as they attempt to capitalise on the American Dream even as the rampant violence, decay and corruption of the day threaten to destroy all they have built. In a haunting performance, Isaac plays Abel as a man exhausted by his climb to the top in this intelligent and emotional slow-burn drama.

It’s the tail end of the ‘60s in L.A. and drug-fuelled paranoia is running the day. P.I. Doc Sportello knows that “love” is one of those overused words that usually leads to trouble. When his exgirlfriend shows up with a story about a plot against her billionaire boyfriend, the plot thickens.

Three young boys living in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro spend their days searching for treasure. They find it in the form of a satchel, but they quickly discover the need to fight for their lives as its contents are vitally important to the corrupt police force. A suspenseful and emotional thriller, Trash follows the boys through the city’s favelas as they try to use their newfound treasure to change Rio for the better.

In this psychological thriller, Andrew is a gifted young jazz drummer pushed to his breaking point. After being accepted to a prestigious music conservatory, Andrew’s only focus is achieving perfection. Unfortunately for him, that’s also what his brutal and unorthodox new teacher has in mind. “Winner of both the US Grand Jury and Audience Awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Whiplash announces Chazelle as one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the US in recent years. At once fierce and precise, the film begs the question: how far would you go to achieve perfection?” TIFF

TESTAMENT OF YOUTH PREVIEW + LIVE Q&A

“Paul Thomas Anderson’s wild and entrancing new movie, the very first adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel, is a cinematic time machine, placing the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy L.A. dope culture of the early ’70s.” NYFF

Armed with her camera and a dilapidated family car that keeps breaking down, Bethlehem-born Leila Sansour returns to her childhood home to make a deeply personal film about a legendary town in crisis. But just few months into the project, her life and the film take an unexpected turn when Leila's cousin Carol, her last relative in town, persuades her to stay and start a campaign to save the city from irredeemable separation.

PRIDE

Seminal ‘Holocaust’ director Claude Lanzmann introduces Rabbi Benjamin Murmelstein, who ran the ‘model ghetto’ of Theresienstadt from 1944, and was the only ‘Elder’ to survive the war. Murmelstein, a controversial figure who was employed by Eichmann, was charged, and then cleared, of collaboration with the Nazis - but he continued to be viewed with hostility by fellow Jews. Lanzmann’s film vindicates Murmelstein, presenting him as sharp, honest and heroic, working under inconceivable circumstances to keep the Ghetto going and save its Jews. UK Jewish Film Festival
