The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper explores another remarkable story from 20th-century European history with The Danish Girl, the story of renowned painter Lili Elbe, one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Marvellously played by Eddie Redmayne, Lili, born Einar, is in a happy marriage with fellow painter Gerda in this drama set in 1920s Copenhagen. When Gerda’s model doesn’t show up for one of her portrait sessions, Einar takes her place, dressing in women’s clothes for the first time, discovering a brand-new identity as Lili, and subsequently creating a new, complex dimension to their marriage. Matthias Schoenaerts and Ben Whishaw also star in this beautifully lensed portrait of one of the pioneers of the transgender movement.
Jennifer Lawrence switches to a new kind of tough in Joy, a biopic of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop. Mangano was a single mum raising her kids and working as an airline reservation manager when she dreamt up the self-wringing mop; ten years later her company was selling $10 million worth of mops a year. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss.

Three brothers with markedly different approaches to their family’s drug-trade dynasty are drawn back to their Calabrian origins in this darkly elegant gangster drama. The far-flung brothers are compelled to regroup after a bumptious young nephew stirs up a long-dormant feud. Though the action encompasses Amsterdam and Milan, the dark heart of their tale is located in Calabria, in the tiny mountainous town of Africo, where the ’Ndrangheta exerts control.
Tomás has become too much to handle for his mother. So, she packs him off to stay with his brother Fede who’s studying in Mexico City and living with his friend Santos – although they’re both currently on strike. In need of a new focus, the trio set off in their rusty car, chasing their dad’s legacy and their musical hero.
Two bounty hunters in post-Civil War America are en route to collect their reward when they become stranded in a blizzard. Seeking shelter, they encounter a collection of colourful individuals, and mistrust, coffee and violence ensue. Quentin Tarantino’s latest western features an all-star cast of cowboys, killers and bounty hunters and Ennio Morricone’s first western soundtrack in almost four decades.
Winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, Room is a tale of survival and endurance that is by turns harrowing, suspenseful and wondrous. Recounting the story of a mother and child escaping from the captivity in which they have been held for several years, this visionary drama explores the trauma of being stolen from the world and the marvel of discovering it for the first time. TIFF
When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman). Due to the holiday season this film was unconfirmed at the time of going to print. Please check our website to confirm screening times.
Director Thomas McCarthy tells the compelling true story of the Pulitzer prize-winning Boston Globe investigative reporters who uncovered the story of widespread child abuse in the Catholic Church. The “Spotlight” reportorial team revealed a cover-up that had spanned decades at the highest level of Boston’s religious, government and legal institutions. The newspaper exposé rocked the city, the country and the reporters themselves. Spotlight is an engrossing procedural thriller.

Set largely in a luxury Swiss spa, Youth is a deliciously bittersweet drama from acclaimed Italian director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty). Fred, a retired composer, is resisting attempts to revive his greatest work, while Mick, an elderly film director, is desperate to make a comeback movie starring his former muse. Stylish, witty and emotionally resonant, Youth also features sharp and smart references to pop culture – as well as movies past and present. It offers further evidence, if any were needed, of Sorrentino’s position as one of contemporary cinema’s finest filmmakers. BFI

Panahi’s latest is perhaps his most playful film yet. It’s mostly set and entirely shot from inside a car: a taxi of sorts, with Panahi playing himself as an affable amateur cabbie. After giving rides around Tehran to a motley array of passengers – from a rabid reactionary and a liberal teacher to a man selling pirate DVDs and women heading to a shrine – he finally collects his niece, a sassy youngster making a little movie herself for school. The film oozes disarming charm and mischievous wit, slyly reminding us that cinema, for better or worse, always trades in illusion. BFI

THE REVENANT
“Black Souls is the antithesis of a sensationalist splatter movie. There is not an operatic flourish to be seen in a film whose killings are executed with a cold blooded efficiency. This isn’t entertainment; it’s life and death.” Stephen Holden, NY Times

Claire Jenkins, whose PhD was a study of intimate relationships and transsexual transition, will lead a discussion about The Danish Girl tonight. We will be discussing the effect of transsexual transition on families; how transsexual people come out, family survival and how distress is managed. We will consider how authentic the film is in portraying these issues.
