This film has split the critics, but those who love it are calling it a masterpiece. Lonergan’s long-delayed follow-up to 2000’s wonderful brother-sister drama You Can Count On Me is an ambitious look at the effect a gruesome accident has on Manhattan teen.
One of those out-of-the-blue delights that cinema can sometimes spring on audiences, The Artist is a highly original and hilariously funny story about ambition and passion set in 1920s Hollywood. George Valentin is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller, it seems the sky’s the limit - major movie stardom awaits. A glorious cinematic surprise, featuring a stunning recreation of the silent era and superb performances from all. Leeds International Film Festival

Eugene is a tired bureaucrat on the wrong side of middle age who discovers the woman of his dreams - in his dreams. He begins to spend more time sleeping, much to the dissatisfaction of his wife, and clandestinely engages a psychoanalyst in an attempt to understand his vivid new unreality. (Her walls are adorned with portraits of Freud and Jung that bicker over her interpretations!) Dipping into his own distinctive barrel of Eastern European humour, and combining live action with collage and stop-motion animation, Svankmajer embraces a more playful style here (naked women with chicken heads run amok!) that frequently evokes the work of Monty Python and Jan Lenica. Sydney Film Festival
Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s bestselling novel, this tells the tale of a boy who heads to the Flanders trenches in 1915 to rescue his beloved horse. With a superb cast of British character actors, this is Spielberg at his best, fusing the awe-struck child’s eye majesty of his finest ’80s work with the darker, more adult stateliness of his Oscar-friendly heavy-hitters.
Hunger put Steve McQueen on the map as a remarkably promising new filmmaker. That promise is fulfilled, and surpassed, with his second directorial effort, Shame. A searing examination of sexual compulsion, the film features extraordinary performances from Michael Fassbender who plays Brandon, a seemingly normal New Yorker trapped by his erotic compulsions and Carey Mulligan who plays Sissy, Brandon’s needy, neurotic sister. When Sissy shows up at his apartment in emotional freefall, their collision sends both siblings reeling. Shame is a frank and fearless exploration of sexual need and how it shapes our lives. AFI FEST
In the eleven years since Ralph Fiennes triumphantly trod the boards in London and New York as Coriolanus, the celebrated actor has been driven by the notion of bringing Shakespeare’s visceral history play to the big screen for the first time - so driven, in fact, that Coriolanus also marks his debut as a director. Bringing to that role the same fierce intelligence and passion that he does to his work in front of the camera, Fiennes crafts an indelible portrait of the banished Roman general who allies himself with his sworn enemy to take revenge on the city that rejected him. Coriolanus is a drama for the ages, a commentary on the seductions of war and an auspicious directorial debut from one of the world’s great classical actors.
In his first film since the Oscar-winning Sideways, writer-director Alexander Payne again proves himself a master of the kind of smart, sharp and surprisingly tender comedy that was once the signature of Billy Wilder and Jean Renoir. He follows Matt King, the heir of a prominent Hawaiian landowning family whose life is thrown for a loop when his wife is critically injured in a boating accident. Rooted in Clooney’s beautifully understated performance, Payne’s film is an uncommonly perceptive portrait of marriage, family and community, suffused with humour and tragedy, and wrapped in a warm human glow.

Nobody noticed when Joyce Vincent died in her bedsit above a shopping mall in North London in 2003. Her body wasn’t discovered for three years, surrounded by Christmas presents she had been wrapping, and with the TV still on. Interweaving interviews with imagined scenes from Joyce’s life, Dreams of a Life is a powerful documentary that is not only a portrait of Joyce but also a vivid portrait of London in the eighties. This is screening in our Lounge. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets £4.50

Playing both the staunch human battleship and the diminished old woman, Meryl Streep is riveting in The Iron Lady. Her performance provides this engrossing if somewhat deferential biopic of Margaret Thatcher with a richly conflicted centre that befits one of the most divisive figures in 20th century politics.
